Default Re: Youngsters Under Mourinho

Louis van Gaal handed debuts to 14 Manchester United youngsters... but where are the academy graduates now with Jose Mourinho in charge?

* Louis van Gaal invested great faith in Manchester United's youngsters
* The former Old Trafford boss handed debuts to 14 academy graduates
* Doubts still remain over Jose Mourinho's ability to blood youth players
* Marcus Rashford hasn't had a competitive minute under the new boss

Jose Mourinho may have enjoyed an impressive start to his reign as Manchester United manager but doubts still remain over his ability to blood youth.

While Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Eric Bailly - United's summer signings - have hit the ground running, there's been little sign of Louis van Gaal's kids who made their debuts under the former Old Trafford boss.

Defenders Cameron Borthwick-Jackson and Tyler Blackett are the latest to leave the club while Marcus Rashford, who made a dramatic breakthrough last season, hasn't had a competitive minute under Mourinho.

So, what has happened to Van Gaal's debutants, who were supposed to be his 'legacy' at the club? Sportsmail takes a look back at their emergence and where they are now.

JESSE LINGARD
Debut: vs Swansea City, Premier League, August 16, 2014
Where is he now: United first team

Now 23 years old and very much part of the United first-team set-up, Lingard had to be patient in waiting for his chance to shine.

The winger had loan spells at Leicester City, Birmingham and Brighton before Van Gaal started him in the first match of his tenure, against Swansea in August 2014.

His debut was marred by injury and on his return to fitness, the Warrington-born attacker was sent on yet another loan, this time to Derby.

But he was given his chance to impress by Van Gaal and repaid the boss' faith in him by scoring their winner in last season's FA Cup final victory over Crystal Palace.

Lingard has continued his progress this season under Mourinho, scoring another fine solo goal in the Community Shield but injury has meant he is yet to feature in the new Premier League campaign.

TYLER BLACKETT
Debut: vs Swansea City, Premier League, August 16, 2014
Where is he now: Reading (permanent)
Who sold him: Mourinho

Blackett enjoyed an impressive pre-season under Dutchman Van Gaal and was deservedly handed a first-team debut alongside Lingard.

The defender made 12 appearances in total for United that campaign before he was shipped out on loan to Celtic last season, where he played just eight times.

But after struggling for regular football in Manchester, Blackett has now departed Old Trafford after sealing a move to Championship side Reading on Monday.

SAIDY JANKO
Debut: vs MK Dons, Capital One Cup, August 26, 2014
Where is he now: Celtic (permanent)
Who sold him: Van Gaal

Former manager Van Gaal played a very young team at MK Dons and it proved an embarrassing experience as United were humiliated 4-0 by the League One side.

Janko played the first half before being replaced by Andreas Pereira but didn't feature in the United first team again, being loaned to Bolton and then sold to Celtic last summer.

The right back has made five appearances for the Scottish giants this season under new manager Brendan Rodgers.

REECE JAMES
Debut: vs MK Dons, Capital One Cup, August 26, 2014
Where is he now: Wigan (permanent)
Who sold him: Van Gaal

Another youngster to feature in that humiliating League Cup defeat at MK Dons was James, a defender who arrived from Preston in July 2012.

James previously spent time on loan at Carlisle, Rotherham and Huddersfield before leaving for Wigan in Van Gaal's clearout last summer.

The 22-year-old featured heavily in Wigan's promotion-winning campaign last term, playing 29 matches as the Latics returned to the Championship.

ANDREAS PEREIRA
Debut: vs MK Dons, Capital One Cup, August 26, 2014
Where is he now: On the brink of leaving on loan

The highly-rated Brazilian, having been touted as a potential first-team player after impressing in the youth team, came on for Janko at Stadium MK but could do little to avert disaster.

While continuing to play for the Under 21s it wasn't until the 3-0 Premier League win over Tottenham in March 2015 that Pereira got another chance.

Pereira made 11 appearances in total under Van Gaal last season and although he was given a chance by Mourinho in pre-season, he is on the brink of leaving the club on loan this summer.

PADDY MCNAIR
Debut: vs West Ham, Premier League, September 27, 2014
Where is he now: Sunderland (permanent)
Who sold him: Mourinho

Northern Irish centre half McNair was thrown in for a home Premier League match with West Ham and performed impressively enough to be given a run.

The teenager showed a maturity beyond his years and United won the first four matches in which he started.

But the central defender's chances were limited last season and he made just 13 appearances for United as they struggled again under Van Gaal.

McNair was deemed surplus to requirements by Mourinho and was snapped up by Sunderland, along with fellow United academy graduate Donald Love.

TOM THORPE
Debut: vs West Ham, Premier League, September 27, 2014
Where is he now: Rotherham (permanent)
Who sold him: Van Gaal

Thorpe had worked his way up through United's youth system and was captain of their Under 21 team.

David Moyes had sent him out on loan to Birmingham but when United suffered a shortage of players through injury, Van Gaal brought Thorpe in as back-up.

In the end, he only played a few minutes for United, replacing Angel di Maria late on against West Ham and was sold to Rotherham last summer.

He spent part of last season on loan at Bradford, where he played four matches, and returned to Rotherham where he has featured in the new campaign.

CAMERON BORTHWICK-JACKSON
Debut: vs West Bromwich Albion, Premier League, November 7, 2015
Where is he now: Wolves (on loan)
Who let him go: Mourinho

Part of United's academy set-up for many years, local lad Borthwick-Jackson had become a regular in United's back line last season.

Making his debut from the bench in the win over West Brom, the 19-year-old went on to play in a number of high-profile games with United short on personnel at the back.

Mourinho has opted to send him out on loan to Championship side Wolves this season and he is expected to flourish in the second tier of English football.

DONALD LOVE
Debut: vs Sunderland, Premier League, February 13, 2016
Where is he now: Sunderland
Who sold him: Mourinho

Another defensive injury crisis forced Van Gaal to promote from within last season and Scotland Under 21 defender Love was one of the beneficiaries.

He was summoned from the bench when Matteo Darmian hurt himself against Sunderland and was then handed his first start in United's shambolic loss to Midtjylland.

The 21-year-old never quite managed to breakthrough at United and has recently signed for Sunderland, along with McNair, in a £5.5million deal.

JOE RILEY
Debut: vs Shrewsbury Town, FA Cup, February 22, 2016
Where is he now: United Under 23s

The versatile left back or midfielder featured often for United's Under 21s and became the latest to make the step up when brought on for Borthwick-Jackson at half-time in the win at Shrewsbury.

He subsequently started in midfield against Midtjylland as well, playing 79 minutes but didn't play under Van Gaal again.

Riley has been taking part in first-team training sessions under Mourinho but has yet to make the squad and is continuing to play with the Under 23s.

MARCUS RASHFORD
Debut: vs Midtjylland, UEFA Europa League, February 25, 2016
Where is he now: United first team

A player who needs no introduction, Rashford enjoyed a spectacular breakthrough season under Van Gaal's stewardship in the Dutchman's final campaign in charge.

Thrown in against Midtjylland after Anthony Martial injured himself in the warm-up, Rashford's two goals saved United from embarrassment against the Danes.

Just to prove it wasn't a one-off, Rashford then scored twice more in the win over Arsenal on his Premier League bow, only three days later.

He finished the season with eight goals and was also included in Roy Hodgson's Euro 2016 squad after scoring on his international debut against Australia.

But he is yet to play a competitive minute under Mourinho in the opening two Premier League matches.

Rashford, despite his goalscoring form last season, is yet to feature under his new manager

REGAN POOLE
Debut: vs Midtjylland, UEFA Europa League, February 25, 2016
Where is he now: United Under 23s

The 18-year-old Poole, bought from League Two's Newport County last September, only received clearance to play competitive football at the start of February 2016.

Handed the No 41 shirt, he made his United debut as a late replacement for Ander Herrera in the 5-1 win over Midtjylland.

Didn't make a further appearance under Van Gaal and has returned to play for the Under 23s this season.

Regan Poole also played in the win over Midtjylland but has returned to play for Under 23s

TIMOTHY FOSU-MENSAH
Debut: vs Arsenal, Premier League, February 28, 2016
Where is he now: United

The 18-year-old centre back, signed from the Ajax academy back in 2014, came on for his first-team debut during the second half of the 3-2 victory over Arsenal.

A regular presence in United's Under 21 side, Fosu-Mensah is tipped for a bright future at Old Trafford and made 10 appearances in total last term.

But Mourinho hasn't included the young Dutch defender in any of his squads this season and has opted for experience instead.

JAMES WEIR
Debut: vs Arsenal, Premier League, February 28, 2016
Where is he now: United Under 23s captain

Weir became the latest youngster to receive his debut when he came on for the final few minutes of their win over Arsenal, replacing Ander Herrera.

Since joining the Carrington academy from Preston, the attack-minded midfielder has progressed steadily through the youth team ranks.

Has captained the Under 21s, including their title-winning campaign last term, but it remains to be seen if Mourinho will show trust in the Old Trafford youngster.
