Default Re: United Reserve Matches

Barclays Premier Reserve League
County Ground, 24 August 2009

Reserves: Bolton 1 United 3

United's Reserves made a winning start to the new league season, brushihg off the challenge of Bolton Wanderers to post a 3-1 win at Leyland's County Ground.

BOLTON WANDERERS 1
O'Halloran 10

MANCHESTER UNITED 3
Cathcart 3, Tosic 45, Hewson 83

Craig Cathcart headed United into the lead early on, only for Michael O'Halloran to level soon afterwards. Zoran Tosic nudged the Reds ahead again, however, before Sam Hewson made sure of the points late on.

There were also useful run-outs for Wes Brown, Darron Gibson and Danny Welbeck, all of whom completed at least an hour towards their early-season fitness levels.

Those experienced heads bolstered Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Warren Joyce's side. A week ago, an inexperienced United team won the Lancashire Senior Cup final at the expense of a Bolton side boasting 11 players with first team experience. Here, the roles were reversed as a young Trotters side took to the field.

United were ahead inside three minutes, as Cathcart rose to nod Tosic's corner inside goalkeeper Robert Lainton's near post. Parity was restored seven minutes later, however, as O'Halloran raced onto a Sam Sheridan through-ball and calmly converted.

Although the hosts enjoyed a spell of pressure, it was always United who carried the greater menace, with Josh King and Welbeck leading the line with great strength and verve, and the former laid on the second goal for Tosic just before the break.

The Norwegian striker pounced on a loose ball, steamed towards goal and pulled back from the byline. Although the ball was scuffed away from Gibson, Tosic was on hand to coolly outfox a defender and place his finish in the roof of the net.

Lainton was repeatedly called upon to repel the Reds throughout the second half, either side of a triple substitution in which Tosic, Brown and Gibson were replaced by Eikrem, Hewson and Stewart.

The latter drew a superb block from Lainton, who also excelled to keep out King and Welbeck, before Hewson rose to power home David Gray's cross and make the points safe.

United: Amos; W Brown (Eikrem 58), Chester, Cathcart, De Laet; Gray, Gibson (Hewson 58), James, Tosic (Stewart 58); King, Welbeck.
Subs not used: Zieler, Dudgeon.
