Young Terriers dump United out of FA Youth Cup

The Reds could have no complaints after the West Yorkshire side booked a quarter-final place against either Manchester City or Fulham, who meet at the Etihad Stadium next Wednesday.

United’s FA Youth Cup hopes were brought to an end by a talented and non-stop set of Huddersfield youngsters at the John Smith’s Stadium on Friday night, writes Cliff Butler.

The Reds could have no complaints after the West Yorkshire side booked a quarter-final place with a 2-1 win against either Manchester City or Fulham, who meet at the Etihad Stadium next Wednesday.

This was the first visit of a United side, at any level, to play at the John Smith’s Stadium.

The ground has been Huddersfield’s home since they made the move from Leeds Road in 1994.

And with no first team fixture for the Reds this weekend a good number of United fans made the short hop across the windswept Pennine Moors to support Paul McGuinness’ lads.

Huddersfield, who are currently five points clear at the top of the Professional Development League North, started the game confidently.

And in the 14th minute they shocked United when Ben Atkinson fired them into the lead.

It was the first goal United had conceded after knocking out Burnley, 2-0, and Leicester City, 1-0, in the previous rounds.

United struck back, in the 26th minute, when skipper James Wilson took a pass from Matthew Willock before hitting home a low shot.

However, five minutes before the break Huddersfield were back in front.

Jake Charles, grandson of the great Welsh international John Charles, scored from the penalty spot after the referee had spotted a shirt-tug in United’s penalty area.

UNITED: J Pereira, Evans, Barber (Rashford 84), Borthwick-Jackson, Ioannou (Mitchell 65), Goss, Janko, Willock, Wilson, A Pereira, Harrop.

Subs not used: Riley, Henderson (Gk), Redmond

Attendance: 1,385.
