Jaap Stam has been appointed as the new manager of Reading, the Championship club announced on Monday afternoon.

The former Manchester United defender replaces Brian McDermott, who was sacked from his second spell in charge at the Madejski Stadium in May after just six months as manager.

The Dutchman becomes Reading's first non-British manager and has signed a two-year contract with the club, with an option to extend the deal by a further year subject to results.

Stam revealed that he was attracted to Reading because of the ambition of the club's director of football, fellow Dutchman, Brian Tevreden.

'I wanted to be at a team that wanted to achieve something,' Stam told Reading's official YouTube channel.

'When I got the invitation to speak to the club, and the technical director Brian Tevreden, it was a very good conversation that we had.

'You always need to have ambition. As a player I wanted to achieve the most out of everything and win as many trophies as you can.

The Dutchman is aiming to guide Reading back to the Premier League within the next two years

'As a manager I've still got the same ambition and I want to do that with the team I'm managing. I'm very happy to do that with this club. Hopefully we can do well and get eventually where we want to go.'

Stam also revealed that he had spoken to Ronald Koeman and Guus Hiddink before accepting the role.

'It's important to talk to different people,' he said. 'I asked them what you need to know. You need to use the advice you get. We're going to talk to the squad after the press conference and see what we need to do.'

The Dutchman is set to be joined at the Madejski Stadium by assistant coaches Andries Ulderink and Said Bakkati, who worked with Stam whilst he was coaching with Ajax.

And the former Manchester United man says his main goal is to now guide the club back to the Premier League within his two-year contract.

'It's not going to be easy because everyone knows the Championship is a very strong league,' he said.

'There are some great teams playing in this league but I have the ambition to hopefully get to the Premier League with Reading.'
