Tour 2014 preview: United vs Inter Milan

Do your homework on the opposition ahead of United's next International Champions Cup match in Washington DC...

The Opposition
FC Internazionale Milano (or just Inter) are one of Italy's premier teams dating back to 1908 when the team started after an Italian/Swiss-led consortium became disgruntled at the domination of Italians playing for neighbours AC Milan. So Inter formed and established a policy of attracting players from foreign shores, as well as Italians. The Nerazzuri have won 18 Scudetti and three European Cups.

Previous Meetings United have faced Inter on four previous occasions, all in the Champions League. The first tie, back in 1999, featured a 2-0 win at Old Trafford that was followed by a 1-1 draw at the San Siro - a game in which Paul Scholes famously scored a crucial away goal. More recently, Sir Alex Ferguson's Reds faced off against Jose Mourinho’s men in 2009, once again emerging victorious via the means of a 2-0 home win after a first leg stalemate.

Head Coach Walter Mazzarri is the man currently in the Inter hot-seat. The Italian was unveiled as boss in May 2013 after the sacking of Andrea Stramaccioni and will face United for the very first time during Tour 2014.

Star Man United have so far scored 10 goals in just two matches, showcasing an attacking threat that will be needed to get past former Reds captain Nemanja Vidic, who joined Inter earlier this summer. The Serbian claimed the Man of the Match award on his debut against Real Madrid and will no doubt hope to star against his former club.

Last Season Inter enjoyed a decent season in Serie A but missed out on a Champions League spot due to their fifth place finish, a staggering 42 points behind champions Juventus.

Did you know? Inter are the only Italian club never relegated from SerieA.
