U18: Barnsley 0 United 1
Robbie Brady made it third time lucky in his quest to score from a set-piece as his brilliantly struck second-half free-kick handed United victory against Barnsley.
The young Irish forward had twice been denied by the crossbar in the first half.
In fact, Brady wasn't the only player to be foiled by the woodwork in the opening 45 minutes. Reds forward William Keane hit a post, as did Barnsley in a half that ended 0-0 but should have seen United take advantage of superior chances.
The Reds were not perturbed, neither was Brady as he continued to eye United's dead-ball duties. His third free-kick, from 25 yards out, proved more successful. The shot stayed low, and undetected, leaving the Barnsley goalkeeper rooted to the spot as the ball hit the back of the net.
That goal was all that separated the two teams, and the win was largely deserved on the balance of play. The slender winning margin could perhaps have been greater, but credit is due to a dogged Barnsley side.
