Default Re: [EPL] Manchester City vs Manchester United

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has said he expects Vincent Kompany to be out for 'a minimum of one month' with a recurrence of a calf injury

* Vincent Kompany's injury woes continued against Dynamo Kiev
* Manchester City captain left the field after five minutes on Tuesday night
* Kompany has aggravated calf problem that has plagued his season
* Manuel Pellegrini expects Belgian to be out for at least one month
* Fellow defender Nicolas Otamendi was brought off 20 minutes later
* City host Manchester United in crucial derby game on Sunday
* Manuel Pellegrini is hopeful Otamendi could recover in time for derby

Manchester City reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time on Tuesday night but it was overshadowed by captain Vincent Kompany suffering yet another calf injury.

Kompany limped off after just seven minutes of a goalless draw at home to Dynamo Kiev that saw City go through 3-1 on aggregate, and the Belgium defender could struggle to play again this season.

'Vincent has a muscle injury in his calf, same as he had before,' said City manager Manuel Pellegrini.

Vincent Kompany hobbles off after just five minutes in Manchester City's clash with Dynamo Kiev

Kompany's face suggested he had suffered yet another serious injury setback after calf problems

'Always with muscle injuries it is a minimum of a month. It is difficult to say if he is out for the season but we are in the middle of March and then it is the middle of April.'

Kompany's centre-back partner Nicolas Otamendi also went off in the first half and could be a doubt for Sunday's Manchester derby.

But the City manager is hoping the Argentine defender will recover in time for the crucial game at the Etihad.

Kompany was first struck with this season's calf problems in September in a 2-1 Champions League defeat by Juventus which saw him miss five games.

He returned to the starting line-up in October but missed most of November and December until returning on boxing day, only to re-injure his calf - ruling him out until his latest return on February 14.

Nicolas Otamendi also went off injured in the first half of Tuesday's match after suffering a 'kick'

The Argentine defender winces in pain as he is attended to by a Manchester City physio

'Having this problem in his calf and it being the middle of March, at least three-quarters of the rest of the season he will not play,' Pellegrini said.

'I think he must be very strong with his mentality. It is very difficult to accept it, but there is nothing he can do. So we must see tomorrow with the examinations.'

With centre backs dropping like flies fans will be concerned about the options available for Sunday's crunch game with rivals Manchester United.

Defeat at the Etihad on Sunday would leave the Red Devils just one point behind City in the race for fourth place and could allow West Ham to leap-frog Manuel Pellegrini's side.

Despite Kompany's ongoing problems, Pellegrini does not believe he has been overly used in playing City's last six games.

'You always take a risk - the work during the week is also a risk. But he had recovered without any problem.

'It was the sixth game, but he had not felt any problems before the games, so I think it was not a risk and bad luck only.'
