Form guide: Prior to the international break, Manchester United recorded an impressive 3-0 win over Newcastle at St James’ Park thanks to goals from Jonny Evans, Patrice Evra and Tom Cleverley. Three points in the North East was a welcome tonic for the Reds, after slipping to a surprise defeat to Tottenham a week earlier. Saturday’s visitors Stoke City are yet to earn a single Premier League point from four previous trips to Old Trafford. The Potters are on a decent run of form, though, losing just one of their last six domestic outings. However, that run only includes one win over Swansea.

Last meeting: The Potters paid the penalty at the Theatre of Dreams as an injury hit United recorded a comfortable 2-0 win, with both Javier Hernandez and Dimitar Berbatov converting from the spot. Having exited the FA Cup a week earlier, and with important league matches against Chelsea and Liverpool coming up, this was a crucial win for the Reds.

Ins and outs: Although normally the scourge of domestic managers due to the risk of injury, United were blessed by a healthy international break with every player reporting back to Carrington in full health. Sir Alex Ferguson is also boosted by the return of Ashley Young, although the Stoke clash comes too soon for Chris Smalling. Stoke hope to recall Michael Owen, who missed their recent defeat to Liverpool through injury. The former Reds striker is “desperate” to face his former club after joining the Potters in the summer.

Opposition boss: Tony Pulis is arguably one of the most underrated managers in the Premier League, having kept Stoke in the top flight for four consecutive seasons following their 2008 promotion from the Championship. A tough, straightforward Welshman with a no-nonsense attitude, it’s easy to see where the Potters draw their character and personality from.

Star man: Peter Crouch has plied his trade for several top-flight clubs over the years, though the towering striker finally looks at home in Staffordshire at the Britannia Stadium. The 31-year-old England international is on fire this term, bagging five goals for the Potters thus far, including three, quite predictably for a man who stands at just over two-metres tall, with his head. United’s injury-hit back-four will need to be on top form come Saturday afternoon.

Quote/unquote: “It's always hard to play Stoke because they play a different kind of football to most teams in the Premier League. They are very physical and have very strong players. It's also difficult because most of the game is in the air. We need to be strong and play our game.” – Nani

Sub-plots: Former United striker Michael Owen hopes to face his former club for the first time since swapping Old Trafford for the Britannia Stadium in the summer. While he only spent three seasons in M16, the poacher remains a favourite with many Reds thanks to his Manchester derby winner in 2009. Fellow United old-boy Ryan Shawcross should also feature.

Whistle blower: Anthony Taylor will take charge of this fixture. The Manchester-based official has not been involved in any Stoke games this season, but did referee the Reds’ recent Capital One Cup win over Newcastle. Taylor has distributed 12 yellow cards and one red this campaign.

Rivals watch: After the international break, the Premier League returns with a bang this weekend. Spurs host Chelsea at midday on Saturday before Manchester City travel to West Brom, Liverpool host Reading and Arsenal take on Norwich.
