UEFA Champions League - News and Rumors
[2010/2011] UEFA Champions League THIRD QUALIFYING ROUND Celtic face Braga in Champions League Soccernet - July 20, 2010 Celtic will face Braga in the third qualifying round of the Champions League. Neil Lennon's team will be pleased with the draw which, on paper at least, pairs them with the weakest of the five teams they could have been paired with. The unseeded Bhoys could also have faced Ajax, Dynamo Kiev, Fenerbahce or Zenit St Petersburg. Under the new leadership of Domingos Paciência, Braga led the Portugese league for much of last season but eventually finished runners-up to Benfica. Braga have established themselves as one of the most consistent sides in the division with a series of top-six finishes that has seen them qualify for Europe with regularity. The matches will be played on July 27-28 and August 3-4.

______________________________ Dynamo Kiev cruise, Unirea hold Zenit Soccernet - July 27, 2010 Dynamo Kiev secured a 3-0 victory over Belgian side Gent on Tuesday in their Champions League third qualifying tie. Andriy Yarmolenko put Kiev ahead on 19 minutes before former AC Milan star Andriy Shevchenko and substitute Roman Zozulya rounded off the scoring late on. Unirea Urziceni played out a goalless draw with Russian giants Zenit St Petersburg in Romania. Unirea saw Razvan Paduretu sent off in the 36th minute but Zenit boss Luciano Spalletti said: "This is a good result. We played a team that battled until the very last minute. For more than half the game we had the numerical advantage, but they defended very well, especially in and around the penalty area." Elsewhere, The New Saints FC saw their European dreams suffer a blow as they suffered a 3-1 loss at home to Anderlecht. Belgian champions Anderlecht got off to the perfect start when Sacha Kljestan gave them the lead in the seventh minute and things looked ominous for TNS as Jonathan Legear doubled the advantage 11 minutes later. But TNS did not let their heads drop and they went close twice in the first half before Craig Jones, who had narrowly missed one of those opportunities, brought them back into the game seven minutes after the interval. However, the Welsh outfit switched off and a free-kick was floated in towards the unmarked Matias Suarez, who headed in a third for Anderlecht. TNS now have a mountain to climb in the second leg on August 3. Champions League qualifying third round Omonia Nicosia 1-1 SV Salzburg Dynamo Kiev 3-0 KAA Gent Liteks Lovetch 1-1 MSK Zilina TNS 1-3 Anderlecht Sparta Prague 1-0 Lech Poznan Unirea Urziceni 0-0 Zenit St Petersburg

Re: [2010/2011] UEFA Champions League
Braga thrash Celtic, Ajax held
Soccernet - July 28, 2010 Celtic were left on the brink of crashing out of this season's Champions League after gifting Braga a 3-0 win in Wednesday's third qualifying round first leg. A controversial first-half penalty from Alan - awarded after Ki Sung-Yeung was adjudged to have handled - a debut goal from Uwa Elderson Echiejile, and a stunning free-kick from substitute Matheus ensured the Hoops' miserable European away record continued under Neil Lennon. Celtic failed to muster a single shot on target in sweltering conditions at the AXA Stadium, with their opponents comfortably holding sway in what was both sides' first competitive match of the season. Alan kept his cool to convert a 26th minute opener from the spot, before appalling defending gifted Braga their second goal 15 minutes from time, when Matheus' corner missed by a host of players before Elderson bundled the ball home. Mattheus, on as a second-half substitute, then blasted home a spectacular third from a long-range free-kick to condemn the Hoops to an embarassing defeat. Elsewhere, Uruguay striker Luis Suarez continued where he left off with Ajax last season, scoring in his side's 1-1 draw with PAOK in Amsterdam. Suarez's overhead kick gave Martin Jol's team the lead, but Serbian midfielder Vladimir Ivic handed the Greek side an away goal with his 73rd minute equaliser. Kazakhstani champions Aktobe - who were knocked out of last season's Champions League in the third qualifying round by Maccabi Haifa - gained a measure of revenge by beating reigning Israeli champions Hapoel Tel Aviv 1-0 courtesy of Samat Smakov's winner. BATE Borisov - who drew home and away against Juventus in the 2008-09 Champions League, held Danish side FC Copenhagen in Belarus. Rosenborg will take a one-goal lead back to Norway after overcoming Scandanavian rivals AIK in Sweden. 18-year-old Markus Henriksen's first-half goal was the difference between the two sides. Goals from Ivica Iliev, Sasa Ilic and Cleo gave HJK Helsinki a mountain to climb as Partizan Belgrade ran out comfortable 3-0 winners in Serbia. Moreno Costanzo's 89th minute penalty salvaged a 2-2 home draw for Young Boys against 2008 Champions League quarter-finalists Fenerbahce after former Sheffield United player Colin Kazim-Richards was sent off for the Turkish club for two bookings before half-time. Hungarian champions Debrecen look set to miss out on successive qualifications for the group stages after crashing to a 2-0 home defeat against Swiss side FC Basel, courtesy of goals from Valentin Stocker and substitute Granit Xhaka in the 34th and 90th minute respectively. Dinamo Zagreb drew 1-1 with FC Sheriff in Moldova.

Re: [2010/2011] UEFA Champions League
Champions League: Celtic crash out to Braga
Soccernet - August 4, 2010 Celtic have failed to qualify from the Champions League qualifiers, losing 4-2 to Portuguese side Braga on aggregate. First Celtic goals for Gary Hooper and Efrain Juarez proved to be the only highlights of the club's campaign after Paulo Cesar's first-half away goal killed off any slim hopes of a comeback against Sporting Braga. Slack defending from new full-back Cha Du-Ri allowed Cesar to put Braga four ahead on aggregate midway through a disappointing first half for Neil Lennon's men. Hooper and Juarez salvaged some pride to win the game but Celtic never built up the attacking momentum needed to prevent them dropping into the Europa League play-off round. Elsewhere, other big-name casualties came in the form of Turkish side Fenerbahce, who lost 1-0 (3-2 on aggregate) to Young Boys after a Henri Bienvenu goal and one of last year's surprise sides Unirea Urziceni, who lost 1-0 to Russian side Zenit St Petersburg after a goalless first leg. Ajax Amsterdam managed to hold off the challenge of PAOK Salonika to progress on away goals after a 3-3 draw. Portuguese winger Vieirinha gave the Greeks a shock lead, before two from Luis Suarez and one from Rasmus Lindgren put the Dutch side ahead. Two late goals from Dimitrios Salpigidis levelled the scores, but Ajax held on to progress.
