Bayern Munich v Manchester United: Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand fly to Germany
-telegraph.co.uk-

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney and defender Rio Ferdinand have travelled to Germany with the rest of the squad for their Champions League quarter-final first leg against Bayern Munich.

Rooney and Ferdinand both missed Manchester United's 4-0 win over Bolton at the weekend because of respective groin and foot injuries.

Top goalscorer Rooney, however, is likely to line up as a lone striker at the Allianz Arena, while Ferdinand will join Nemanja Vidic in the heart of the defence.

As they look to reach their third European final in as many years, United veteran Ryan Giggs said the clash with Bayern has triggered memories of one the club's most astonishing wins.

Although the 1999 Champions League was not won in Munich, the German city's famous Bayern were the victims of one of the most memorable finals in history.

"I can't believe it's 11 years ago," said Giggs. "It was one of the greatest nights of my life and for many fans too, this will bring back a lot of happy memories.

"We will settle for the same score as in 1999 too, but hopefully not leaving it as late as we did then."

Giggs has warned his team-mates that they cannot afford to underestimate their German opponents as United's track record proves results against Bayern are always close.

"I am a little bit surprised about our overall record but it has always been tight," he continued. "It is usually difficult against German sides, and against the top ones even more so.

"We have won the European Cup three times. They have won it on four occasions so you are talking about two clubs with massive history; full of experience and full of great players so hopefully it's going to be a great spectacle.

"The team we played against in 1999 was really powerful. It had strength all the way through. Now Bayern have a lot of trickery with Ribery and Robben, and some other individual match winners.

"But our European record in recent times has been good and if we play to the best of our ability we really fancy ourselves."

Giggs' sentiments have been echoed by United captain Gary Neville who has called the club's next nine days "season defining".

Ferguson's side face Chelsea at Old Trafford in between the two legs against Bayern, and Neville is hoping the club's run of form at home continues into next week.

"We have Bayern, Chelsea and Bayern again in a week, so these are season-defining moments, but we are going into this period with confidence," he said. "We are happy to have the second leg at Old Trafford — our form at home has been very good this season and we are always confident there.

“But the key tie is always the away leg and we have to go there first and get a good result because the home leg can sometimes be a disaster if you don’t get a good result away.

“I have never played a game against Bayern that was not extremely difficult and a test of endurance for both teams.”

Rooney, Ferdinand joins Man Utd squad for Munich flight
-tribalfootball.com-

Rio Ferdinand and Wayne Rooney are part of the Manchester United squad flying to Munich this morning.

United have received a Champions League boost after Rooney and Ferdinand declared themselves fit for travel ahead of Tuesday night's quarter-final with Bayern Munich.

The England duo missed Saturday's 4-0 win at Bolton with a bruised foot and groin injury respectively.

However, Sir Alex Ferguson expressed confidence that the big-money pair would be available for the first leg encounter and both were among the United party that checked in at Manchester Airport on Monday morning.

Full Travelling Squad to German; Edwin van der Sar, Ben Foster, Tomasz Kuszczak; Gary Neville, Rafael, Nemanja Vidic, Jonny Evans, Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra, Ritchie De Laet; Michael Carrick, Darren Fletcher, Darron Gibson, Paul Scholes, Gabriel Obertan, Nani, Antonio Valencia, Ji-sung Park, Ryan Giggs; Wayne Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov, Federico Macheda.

Jelang Bayern vs MU
Sir Alex Bidik Gol Tandang
Rossi Finza Noor - detiksport

"Kami ingin bermain seperti ketika melawan Milan.

Robben: They are almost a one-man team
-sport.co.uk-

Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben believes Manchester United are a weaker proposition than two years ago and suggests Sir Alex Ferguson’s side rely heavily on Wayne Rooney, labelling the Premier League champions ‘a one-man team’.

The former Chelsea FC star could miss tomorrow night’s game against Manchester United due to a calf injury, but he stoked the fires ahead of the game at Munich’s Allianz Arena by suggesting Sir Alex Ferguson’s side are not as powerful as recent years.

Manchester United head into the game as favourites but the Bayern Munich star claims the underdog tag could suit the Bavarian giants. The 26-year-old believes the Bundesliga side will relish trying to halt Wayne Rooney.

The Bayern Munich star told the News of the World: “This Manchester United team is not invincible,"

“If the press want to see them as favourites then that suits us because all the pressure will be on them.”

"I have watched them on television many times recently and their team is certainly not as powerful as it was in the last two years."

He added: "Rooney has been phenomenal this season.

"But at the moment he seems to be their only solution: What about if he doesn't function?

"He has become the star of the side since the sale of Ronaldo last summer but we will be prepared to stop him.

"They are almost a one-man team so our defenders will give him 180 minutes of non-stop distraction."

Jelang Bayern vs MU
'Setan Merah' Layaknya Fiorentina

Bayern skipper fears Rooney
-sport.co.uk-

Bayern Munich skipper Mark van Bommel believes his side may well struggle to keep Wayne Rooney at bay as they prepare to meet Manchester United in the Champions League on Tuesday evening.

The quarter-final first-leg will be played at their Allianz Arena home and the Dutchman is prepared for a tough test against last season's losing finalists.

Bayern have lost their position at the top of the Bundesliga table following back-to-back defeats against Eintracht Frankfurt and Stuttgart recently.

Sir Alex Ferguson's Red Devils have chalked up seven successive victories in all competition and sit at the summit of the Premier League but van Bommel is confident they have what it takes to win through.

"It will not be easy to deal with Rooney because he is such a good player," the veteran said.

"We normally man-mark players like him but I don't think we can with him because he is too good.

"We will have to defend zonally so that more than one player can take care of him.

"It will be a very difficult tie because United, along with Barcelona, are the favourites to win the Champions League. I also don't think it is an advantage for us to play the first game at home.

"But we played the first game at home against Fiorentina in the last round and we came through. If we draw 0-0 here and score in Manchester then we will have the advantage."
