Euro 2020
Wembley looks set to be awarded Euro 2020 final as UEFA prepares to pick host cities
* Wembley and Allianz Arena in Munich the only cities in the running to host the semi-finals and finals * But the German FA has effectively agreed to stand aside in return for support for Euro 2024 bid * Glasgow's Hampden Park, Cardiff's Millennium Stadium and Dublin's Aviva Stadium also in running to host matches * UEFA will choose 13 cities from across Europe to stage games England are on the verge of winning their bid to host the semi-finals and final of Euro 2020 but one of Scotland, Wales and Ireland are poised to miss out on staging matches at the tournament. The Football Association's bid for Wembley to stage the climax of the event, which is being held in 13 cities across Europe, will be decided at UEFA's executive committee meeting in Geneva on Friday. Only Munich stands in Wembley's way, but the German FA (DFB) has effectively agreed to stand aside in return for support for its bid for Euro 2024. Wembley looks set to host the Euro 2020 final FA chairman Greg Dyke will find out on Wembley whether the bid has been successful The bids for Glasgow's Hampden Park, Cardiff's Millennium Stadium and Dublin's Aviva Stadium to host three group games and a knockout match each appears less clear-cut. Scottish FA chief executive Stewart Regan acknowledged it was 'highly unlikely' that all four British and Irish bids would be successful. Scotland have the most to fear after the commercial side of their bid was described as 'inadequate' in UEFA's technical reports. Regan said: 'There are four bids from the UK and Ireland and I think it is highly unlikely all four are going to be hosts. 'It's a difficult one to call. We have gone from over 30 countries down to 19 and we have read all the technical reports and there are pluses and minuses in most of them. 'It is out of our hands, but in our favour we have the history and heritage of Glasgow including some of the most famous European club and international games. Because it is the 60th anniversary of the European Championship we think history will feature very heavily in its branding. 'We believe our bid is technically strong. There were a number of concerns raised about the bid but there were concerns raised about almost all of them.' Wales' bid was given a boost by the UEFA technical report, which rated the Millennium Stadium third overall and in terms of income generation to UEFA. Jonathan Ford, chief executive of the Football Association of Wales, said: 'We know that we've got a very strong bid. We also know that the Millennium Stadium was third ranked as far as the income generation to UEFA, based, of course, across the capacity and hospitality offering that we have in the city. 'We've done all we can. 'I've gone about our political campaign in a very professional manner. We've met with every single executive committee member and we've presented our case to all of them. I've written now, probably, three times to them. 'The English bid, the Welsh bid, the Scottish bid, the Irish bid - they're all strong bids. 'The issue now is about the politics behind it and it's whether or not the British are perceived, with Scotland, England and Wales all bidding, as having too many in what some still regard as one country.' UEFA's 17 executive members will vote on the 13 host cities, but if their countries are involved they will not be allowed to take part. It means 15 members can vote for the host city for the final, but only eight members initially in the vote for the group stage hosts. It is expected that votes will be done on a 'ranking' basis, with members ranking their top four venues in terms of preference. Code:

Re: Euro 2020
Football's coming home! Wembley Stadium to host Euro 2020 final as iconic London venue sees off competition from Munich to stage showpiece
* Wembley Stadium will host the final and semi-finals of Euro 2020 * The London venue was awarded the matches at a vote of UEFA's ExCo in Geneva on Friday * Wembley beat off competition from the Allianz Arena in Munich * It will be the first tournament football staged on English soil since Euro 96 * England manager Roy Hodgson and FA Chairman Greg Dyke were in attendance as the decision was announced * The four quarter finals will be staged in Munich, Baku, St Petersburg and Rome * Copenhagen, Bucharest, Amsterdam, Dublin, Bilbao, Budapest, Brussels and Glasgow will host three group games and a round of 16 tie England will at last stage another major football tournament after Wembley was awarded the final and semi-finals of Euro 2020 in Geneva on Friday. Munich withdrew from the final stages bid at the last moment making the choice of London and Wembley by UEFA's executive committee unanimous. The tournam The tournament is being staged in 13 cities across Europe – the brainchild of UEFA president Michel Platini. Wembley Stadium will host the final and semi-finals of Euro 2020 after the English national stadium saw off competition from Munich's Allianz Arena at a UEFA ExCo vote in Geneva on Friday UEFA President Michel Platini announces that London will host the Euro 2020 final and semi-finals alongside host and former Miss Switzerland Melanie Winiger at the announcement in Geneva Platini poses with a smiling FA chairman Greg Dyke and the trophy after the announcement is made Quote:
FA chairman Greg Dyke said: 'We’re delighted it’s nice to win one. Wembley is a great stadium and What a good idea this is to play a tournament across Europe, congratulations to UEFA. 'Some of our England players will still be around. It can be a great of them to take us to Wembley. It’s a brave man who predicts the winners of tournaments.' The UEFA vote for Wembley – held in an eyesore exhibition building in Geneva – was regarded almost as a foregone conclusion with the big FA party including England manager Roy Hodgson, FA chairman Greg Dyke and past and present Ministers of Sport Helen Grant and Kate Hoey, London Mayor Boris Johnson’s Commissioner for sport. UEFA regard Wembley as their favourite stadium on the continent, especially with its money-making potential from the tier of 17,000 corporate seats. The ground has hosted UEFA’s flagship Champions League final twice in the last four years. It was a complicated secret ballot with the 17-strong voting UEFA executive, which includes Manchester United director David Gill not involved in any vote involving their own country. This much needed boost for Wembley also comes with the stadium starting next year the task of renewing the corporate seats sales that bankrolled the ground when they were sold as 10-year packages in 2007. Platini said 'It was a dream and now it has become a reality' as he opened the envelope with London’s name inside. The four cities chosen to host quarter-finals and three group stages were predictably oil-rich Baku, Munich, St Petersburg and Rome all of which have 60,000 capacity stadiums. Copenhagen, Bucharest, Amsterdam, Dublin, Bilbao, Budapest, Brussels and Glasgow will host three group games and a round of 16 tie. The biggest losers were Wales who were expected to be chosen in front of Scotland with Glasgow the last city to be named by Platini in a zonal pair with Dublin’s Aviva Stadium. Wales had been fearful the night before the vote that UEFA politics would ensure an inferior bid was chosen to make for a better spread of venues across Eastern Europe. But they will be devastated at missing out by one vote to Glasgow, whose Hampden Park commercial plans were described as 'inadequate' by UEFA inspectors. Scotland FA chief executive Stewart Regan made special mention about the role played by former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson in helping Hampden across the line. He said: 'Everyone saw that Glasgow was capable of with the Commonwealth Games and that really put Glasgow on the map. 'Sir Alex came in last week with a video in support of our bid and spoke passionately about it and I am sure that must have helped. 'We knew we had a strong bid . We focused on the fact that this is the 60th anniversary and we focused on the history and heritage of football. 'We knew Michel Platini is a football man and that’s why we played strongest on and that’s why we used Sir Alex.' The heritage of the stadium and its successful hosting of the athletics during the Commonwealth Games are also said to have played in part in them piping Wales by one vote. A statement from the Welsh FA, meanwhile, said: 'The FAW is obviously extremely disappointed by today’s news but would like to congratulate those cities that have been chosen as UEFA EURO 2020 host cities. 'We believed that the Millennium Stadium, with its 74,154 capacity and extensive Skybox and hospitality facilities, would have been an ideal venue for UEFA EURO 2020 and provide UEFA with significant revenues. 'In addition, we proposed strong transport and accommodation plans given that four international airports are located within two hours of Cardiff and that we secured accommodation for 41,000 supporters, all in areas covered by the FAW’s free travel commitment. 'We also proposed that any surplus generated from Cardiff hosting UEFA EURO 2020 matches would have been invested into community football projects throughout Wales. But we of course respect UEFA’s decision. 'The FAW would like to thank all the partners that worked so hard to support Cardiff’s bid. While they, like us, will be disappointed with today’s news, there is much to be positive about Welsh football as we look to the future.' The other cities that will host the first pan-European tournament across 13 venues– the 60th anniversary of the competition - likely to be played over four weeks in June 2020 are Copenhagen, Bucharest, Amsterdam, Bilbao, Budapest and Brussels. Euro 2020

Re: Euro 2020
UEFA launch Euro 2020 logo, but without a host nation this is still the tournament without identity
* UEFA have unveiled the branding for the 2020 European Championships * The tournament does not have a single host, rather 13 host cities * Host cities range from Dublin in the west to Baku, Azerbaijan in the east * Wembley will host both semi-finals and the final of Euro 2020 UEFA have launched their logo for the next instalment of the European Championships, but there is still work to do before the 2020 tournament captures the imagination of the football public. This is a tournament UEFA are aiming to 'take to the fans' as they send the event to 13 different cities across the continent to mark the 60th anniversary of the competition, first held in France in 1960. But, rather than a single host country, where home fans have traditionally stamped their mark on a festival of football, the 2020 competition will see cities ranging from Dublin in the west to Baku, Azerbaijan, in the east, each stage four matches before London becomes the focal point for both semi-finals and the final. UEFA launched their logo for the 2020 European Championships on Wednesday Mayor of London Sadiq Khan (left) and UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin pose at the launch The new logo, launched at City Hall in London on Wednesday, includes the words 'Euro 2020' written in the same font as the 2016 tournament's version, with the same circle immediately above it including a largely similar cartoon version of the European Championships trophy. Behind the trophy are six multi-coloured, cheering, fans sitting atop a green bridge, which UEFA describes as a 'universal symbol of connection' for the 13 cities. Each of the host cities will have its own variation of the tournament's logo, all including an image of an 'iconic bridge', with London's version launched on Wednesday including Tower Bridge. The remaining cities will launch their logos one by one at staged events over the coming weeks. Quote:
The new logo is similar to the one used for this year's Euro 2016 tournament in France London, as well as the other 12 host cities, each have their own personalised logos Assuming they qualify for the tournament, countries hosting group stage matches will each be guaranteed two home games during the opening round, but will not be certain to compete on home soil during the knockout stages. With participating teams and the group stage draw not set to be finalised until three months before the finals, there is the potential for teams and their fans to clock up thousands of miles of air travel to all-four corners of the continent, to simply compete in the tournament. Prior to his appointment as UEFA president last week, Aleksander Ceferin admitted the changed tournament structure, which he has insisted is a one-off, was a risk in terms of costs and security, as well as the expense for fans to follow their teams. But speaking at the launch event in London, the Slovenian lawyer insisted the new format was the perfect way to celebrate the anniversary and that England was the ideal place to hold the latter stages. 'I'm delighted to be in England, the country that gave football to the world,' Ceferin said. 'The tournament will be unique and memorable in a variety of ways. 'What better way could there be than to take the final tournament to all four corners of our continent? 'London is a wonderful, vibrant multicultural city and an intense hotbed of football.' New England manager Sam Allardyce, whose contract with the national team expires in 2018, was present at the launch event in London, with FA chief executive Martin Glenn targeting at least a repeat of the run to the semi-finals achieved at Euro 96 - the last time England hosted a major tournament. 'You can never say you're going to win it because everybody else wants to win it too,' he said. 'But that is our ambition: to turn up to every tournament as a reasonable favourite and take it from there.' Prior to Euro 2020 Allardyce and his team will be looking to qualify for and succeed at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, with qualifying for the continent-wide European Championships due to begin in September 2018. Re: Euro 2020
UEFA claim more than 14 MILLION tickets have been demanded for Euro 2020 in just three weeks, breaking tournament record for registrations
* Euro 2020 will be played across 12 cities to mark tournament's 60 years * Demand for tickets is highest in London, St Petersburg and Budapest * The final at Wembley has received a huge 1.3 million ticket requests More than 14 million tickets have been requested for the 2020 European Championship during the first three weeks of the sales window, breaking the tournament's record for registrations, UEFA said on Tuesday. In the month-long first phase of sales starting on June 12, 1.5 million tickets were made available to the general public as part of UEFA's 'fan-first' ticketing policy for the tournament. Euro 2020, which runs from June 12-July 12, is being played in 12 cities across Europe for the first time to mark the 60th anniversary of the competition. Euro 2020, which will be contested in 12 cities, has already received 14 million ticket requests. Around 1.3million ticket requests have been demanded for the final which is at Wembley UEFA claimed the demand for tickets among locals is highest in St Petersburg, London and Budapest, with more than 50 per cent of tickets requested in these cities having been by supporters from the host nations. The final at Wembley has received 1.3 million ticket requests, while the two semi-finals at the same venue have attracted a combined 1.5 million applications. The first-phase tickets are being sold until 1pm BST on Friday. The next phase of ticket sales will begin in December after the final tournament draw takes place on November 30, with 1 million tickets on offer for fans of participating nations. Code:
