The World Cup-winning midfielder was strongly linked with a switch to Barcelona last summer after his agent Mino Raiola agreed a five-year contract with the La Liga club worth £89.5million.

And now, according to Spanish publication Marca, Pogba is back on the radar in La Liga with Zinedine Zidane and Real Madrid said to be assessing his suitability ahead of a summer overhaul at the Bernabeu.

Barcelona strengthened their midfield ranks in January with the £65m signing of Ajax starlet Frenkie de Jong and Real Madrid are well aware they need to freshen up their options in the middle of the park.

Luka Modric and Toni Kroos are long-serving players for the club but Zidane returned to the job recently on the premise of wholesale changes to make them competitive domestically and in Europe once more.

Ahead of France's Euro 2020 qualifying win over Moldova on Friday, Pogba was quizzed on interest from Spain.

'Like I've always said, Real Madrid is a dream for anyone. It's one of the biggest clubs in the world,' Pogba said.

'There is also Zidane as a coach and it's a dream for anybody who likes football. For now, I'm at Manchester. We don't know what the future holds. I'm at Manchester and I'm happy.'

Pogba, given his commercial value and his much-improved form under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, would not be allowed to leave cheaply and it remains unclear if Real Madrid will focus on strengthening other areas of the side, namely their attack.

Zidane has been linked strongly with Chelsea's Eden Hazard as well as Paris Saint-Germain pair Neymar and Kylian Mbappe as the club look to fill the void left by Cristiano Ronaldo following his departure last summer.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has held talks with Paul Pogba after Manchester United's record signing revealed it would be a 'dream' to play for Real Madrid under Zinedine Zidane.

Solskjaer insisted that Pogba is happy at Old Trafford, but felt sufficiently concerned about the comments to seek clarification from the player on his return from international duty with France.

They prompted Real coach Zidane to declare his admiration for Pogba and Madrid-based newspaper Marca, for so long used by the Spanish giants in their pursuit of transfer targets, to begin a round of speculation over Pogba's future.

The 26-year-old midfielder was strongly linked with Barcelona last summer, having told United he wanted to leave, and his agent Mino Raiola agreed a five-year deal with the Catalan club.

However, Pogba is understood to be settled at United now and Solskjaer brushed off his flirtation with Real.

Victor Lindelof will return to the squad after missing Saturday's win over Watford for personal reasons, having received death threats for pulling out of Sweden's internationals.

Solskjaer has spoken to his assistant Mike Phelan about taking on a wider responsibility.

However, it's understood the 56-year-old is more likely to remain as part of the coaching set-up once he meets United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward to discuss a permanent contract.

'Ed and Mick will get things sorted soon,' said Solskjaer. 'He's a key part of the club.'

The outspoken former England international believes that despite Pogba's upsurge in form under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, he has never settled in at the Manchester club and will opt for a move to Real Madrid.
