UNITED RESERVES DISCOVER PREMIER LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL CUP OPPONENTS

Manchester United's Reserves will face FC Porto in the Premier League International Cup, following the quarter-final draw on Friday morning.

The Reds have been rewarded for topping Group B with a home clash against the Portuguese side - one of first-team manager Jose Mourinho's former clubs.

Nicky Butt's Reserves side picked up seven points from the three games in the competition with a 2-2 draw against Middlesbrough clinching first place and a route into the last eight.

UNITED'S RESERVES FACE EVERTON AT LEIGH

Manchester United's Reserves aim to make it a Mersey double by beating Premier League 2 leaders Everton at Leigh Sports Village on Monday night.

Nicky Butt's men picked up a wonderful victory at Anfield last time out when Matty Willock's stoppage-time header accounted for Liverpool. It was a resilient display by United's youngsters but there are certain to be changes to the line-up for the clash against the in-form Toffees.

Joe Riley has departed for Sheffield United on loan while Regan Poole is suspended for three games following his recent red card against Manchester City. Also at the back, Ro-Shaun Williams, is out injured while Axel Tuanzebe made his competitive first-team debut on Sunday against Wigan Athletic.

Everton won the corresponding fixture 2-0 in Southport but one of the goalscorers, Oumar Niasse, has since joined Hull City. A new loan arrival from Wolfsburg, Anton Donkor, who previously scored against the Reds in the UEFA Youth League, could make his debut for the Blues.

"Everton are a very good team," Butt told ManUtd.com. "They're top but, for me, it's about putting out a side to play for Manchester United at the next level; I'm not going to Leigh trying to put a team out to stop Everton winning and get us up the league.

"Player development is the most important thing. It's about identifying the ones who have a real chance of getting to the first team or to really good clubs in the Football League and trying to enhance their progression. We do that well at the club."

A game of four penalties, two of them missed, ended with Everton substitute Bassala Sambou deciding matters with two killer goals against Manchester United, while Eric Bailly played for 58 minutes on his return to action for the Reds.

The Premier League 2 leaders were denied an opener by Joel Pereira's early spot-kick save but went ahead in the first half through Courtney Duffus. United improved significantly after the interval and, after Josh Harrop fired over from the spot, Demi Mitchell got his penalty right to make it 1-1. However, Sambou made a real impact off the bench to hand the Merseysiders a 3-1 victory at Leigh Sports Village.

The visitors gained the upper hand from the outset and were awarded a penalty when Matthew Olosunde fouled Anton Donkor on the edge of the area. It was a debatable decision but Pereira perhaps ensured justice was done when he psyched out the taker Liam Walsh and dived to his right to save superbly.

Pereira, who made his first-team debut against Wigan Athletic at the weekend, was hurt in an accidental collision and required treatment but continued to frustrate the Toffees. After Harrop survived a penalty claim for handball, Calum Dyson wriggled free of Mitchell and forced an outstanding fingertip save by the keeper that diverted the ball onto the bar.

A dangerous corner by Callum Gribbin led to an undetected handball by Matty Foulds when Scott McTominay tried to bundle it home, while Matthew Pennington headed away an inviting cross by Mitchell with McTominay attempting to get his head to the centre. Donkor, a scorer against the Reds for Wolfsburg in the UEFA Youth League in the past, was off target from the edge of the box and fired in a shot that was comfortably fielded by Pereira.

However, the deadlock was broken in the final minute of the first half when Walsh flicked a neat pass into the path of Duffus and the big striker drilled his finish through Bailly's legs and into the far corner of the net.

The Reds were a different proposition after the break and should have equalised a couple of minutes into the second half. Pennington made a late tackle on Olosunde when the right-back burst into the box, after the United man had already evaded a rash challenge by Foulds. Harrop stepped up but blazed his penalty over the bar.

Harrop attempted to atone but pulled a low drive wide from an Axel Tuanzebe pass although Nicky Butt's side drew level when a third penalty was awarded. Mitchell displayed great skill to fly past Jonjoe Kenny and he was clearly fouled with his shirt being tugged. This time, Mitchell made no mistake by slotting past Mateusz Hewelt with his left foot.

Bailly was replaced by Tyrell Warren after sustaining a minor knock to his ankle but United continued to press with Olosunde's cross cannoning off Hewelt and Charlie Scott dipping a volley well wide following a spell of lovely football by the home side.

The game turned when Sambou came on as a substitute as, within seconds, he spun Warren to profit from Donkor's pass and finished clinically past Pereira. Eight minutes later, Tuanzebe was guilty of impeding Sambou and the striker converted the fourth penalty of the night by winning a battle of wits with Pereira, who was booked for attempting to distract the Everton attacker.

Harrop was desperately unlucky when controlling the ball on his thigh and unleashing a fierce volley that beat Hewelt but struck the bar as the hosts slipped to defeat.

Manchester United Reserves endured a miserable night at St George's Park in foul weather conditions as Derby County ran out 5-3 winners.

Despite being bottom of the table at the outset, the Rams collected their third win of the season in some style - even though Callum Gribbin opened the scoring early on. Devonte Redmond and Tosin Kehinde restored some pride but there was never going to be any way back.

Even though the hosts made the better start, following a minute's silence to mark the anniversary of the Munich disaster, Nicky Butt's men took an early lead after Demi Mitchell was fouled inches outside the left-hand side of the penalty area. Although the angle may have seemed difficult, Gribbin's left-footed free-kick had too much power and accuracy for Kelle Roos, who only helped it into the net.

The Rams were shaken but somehow survived a scramble from the rebound when Roos kept out a Kehinde shot, while sloppy defending allowed United to break through again but Josh Harrop's curler was pushed behind by Roos.

However, there were worrying signs for the Reds when Kieran O'Hara and Axel Tuanzebe almost gifted a chance to Emil Riis Jakobsen, when he closed down the keeper and the ball bounced wide. Moments later, Jakobsen was allowed to embark on a dribble down the right flank and he cut an inviting pass back to Alex Babos, who fired home a well-taken equaliser.

Babos was almost in again, but for a Scott McTominay slide tackle, and Derby went ahead courtesy of Timi Max Elsnik. Mason Bennett tricked his way past Matthew Olosunde to chip over O'Hara and Elsnik was left unmarked to convert a simple close-range header.

Jakobsen continued to threaten but Charlie Scott, playing at centre-back, cleared after a parry by O'Hara and the Dane then fired off target as the half drew to a close. The second period started in a similar vein until Gribbin swept a free-kick narrowly wide of the near post after McTominay was fouled.

Matty Willock sliced well off target from a Harrop free-kick but United fell apart when Scott was forced off with a head injury. Three goals in only five minutes left Butt's side absolutely shell shocked. Careless play allowed Elsnik to beat O'Hara with a deflected drive for 3-1 and, two minutes later, Harrop was harried out of possession before Mitchell was beaten in the challenge by Kellan Gordon, who fired home.

Jakobsen flicked wide and shot over when clean through but made it a case of third time lucky by latching onto an Elsnik through ball and making no mistake with a low shot through O'Hara's defences. Redmond restored some pride by smashing in at the second attempt when his initial shot hit a post, following a burst down the right by Olosunde.

Yet O'Hara had to save smartly to deny Bennett a sixth and also pushed away another stinging attempt by the forward. At least Kehinde did manage to score at the other end to further reduce the deficit as he expertly controlled Gribbin's through ball and supplied a measured finish for his first goal at Reserves level.

Derby move above Leicester at the foot of the table and United are now only three points clear of the Rams.

Manchester United Reserves’ recent run of adverse results continued with this defeat despite a spirited performance in the noon-time kick-off at Leigh Sports Village.

With the Reds' hopes of retaining the title captured last season already extinguished, the focus was on finishing the season on a high note and securing a best possible final place in the table.

This was the final scheduled league fixture to be staged at Leigh this season, although the lads will return next Wednesday to take on FC Porto in the Premier League International Cup quarter-final.

The game started at a lively pace with both sides taking the opportunity to get forward as often as possible.

There were gasps from the crowd when Scott McTominay caught Reading striker Sam Smith with a strong challenge, but the referee Mr Bramall was content to have a quiet word with the Reds’ offender.

Both Callum Gribbin, for United, and Reading’s Josh Barratt were guilty of not making the most of genuine goalscoring chances, before Reading moved into the lead, in the 32nd minute, when Gabriel Osho headed home at the far post from Barratt’s free-kick.

United almost claimed an equaliser, early in the second period, when McTominay’s deflected shot looked goalbound until Reading keeper Luke Southwood stretched to make a spectacular save.

Nicky Butt's men slipped further behind, in the 58th minute, when Smith got above United’s defence to head home.

Gribbin almost put United back in picture with a curling shot, but Southwood pushed the ball around the post.

United did their best to arrest the situation in the closing stages, but resolute defending from the visitors preserved their hard-earned lead.

Two second-half goals from Porto's Israel Leon brought to an end Manchester United’s interest in the Premier League International Cup.

Nicky Butt’s side put in a decent performance in this quarter-final but in the end they were forced to concede defeat to an accomplished set of players from Portugal.

Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, who is still on loan at Wolves, was granted permission to play for the Reds and both sides started the game with a spring in their step, which provided the prospect of an evening of entertaining football.

The game swung from end-to-end with both United and Porto putting the emphasis firmly on attack, but strangely there were few real chances of note during the opening half.

Leon hit a threatening-looking shot that failed to find the target and, moments later, Callum Gribbin went close with a well struck free-kick. Joshua Harrop was inches wide with a long range attempt and Porto’s Rui Moreira had similar luck a few minutes later with a shot that zoomed past the post.

Both teams were choosing to chance their luck from distance but neither United nor Porto were showing any real accuracy. Then, on the hour, Tyrell Warren was adjudged to have felled Ruban Macedo in the box. Leon stepped forward to take the kick, but United’s Dean Henderson diving correctly to prevent the ball from crossing the line.

However, Leon was to have the last laugh, for he found the net twice within the next 10 minutes to set United on course for elimination from the competition. He grabbed his first, in the 65th minute, with a well-struck shot, and then four minutes later he completed his redemption by doubling his tally.

United tried hard to claw their way back into the game but Porto, with two goals in the bag, were content to stroke the ball from man to man as the clock ran down.

Goals by Demi Mitchell, Scott McTominay and Devonte Redmond earned Manchester United a valuable away win at Sunderland on the back of one of the most impressive displays in Premier League 2 this season.

The only negatives came in stoppage time when Regan Poole, just back from suspension, was sent off for a second yellow card and the 10 men instantly conceded a consolation goal to George Honeyman.

Nicky Butt's side, playing in blue, looked on song from the outset with McTominay steering a header wide from a Josh Harrop corner and Redmond left in the clear by Callum Gribbin's fine through ball, only for Max Stryjek to pull off a smart save to keep the scores level.

Matty Willock's shot deflected well wide and McTominay was unable to get a touch to a Harrop cross, after feeding the left-sided midfielder and darting into the six-yard box. The one-way traffic continued with Harrop forcing a diving stop out of Stryjek from distance.

Sunderland finally made in-roads themselves when Rees Greenwood picked out Lynden Gooch but the American's shot was blocked by Kieran O'Hara with his legs. It was a warning to the Reds but two goals inside five minutes was no more than the visitors deserved.

Gribbin had two shots blocked before Harrop tangled with ex-United defender Donald Love when moving away from goal. The referee pointed to the spot and left-back Mitchell sent Stryjek the wrong way to register his fourth goal of the season. There was no resting on any laurels as Mitchell's ambitious drive hit Regan Poole and fell to McTominay, whose deflected effort flew past Stryjek for his first strike since September.

With his confidence soaring, McTominay lashed another drive over the top but Josh Maja was denied a certain goal at the other end by a great block by Axel Tuanzebe. United then broke quickly with Gribbin's shot kept out in unorthodox fashion by the over-worked Stryjek. There was a real chance to pull one back for the Black Cats as the half drew to a close, with Denver Hume firing across the box and, after it came off Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, Gooch could only hit the outside of a post with the goal gaping.

Substitute Joel Asoro quickly sparked the Wearsiders into life, only for Honeyman to spurn the opening that was created, and Jan Kirchhoff powered through, shrugging off Willock, who had fired over the top moments earlier, only to side-foot his finish just the wrong side of the far post.

After Poole worked Stryjek, five bookings in a relatively short space of time emphasised how fractious things were becoming. In the 71st minute, the points were secured when Redmond's neat flick sent McTominay through and, when his shot was blocked, Redmond pounced on the rebound. It was again kept out, by Stryjek, but Redmond made no mistake at the third time of asking to plunder the third goal.

A rash tackle on Harrop by Elliot Embleton prompted a touchline row between rival coaches Butt and Elliot Dickman, and tempers remained frayed as Sunderland attempted to reduce the deficit. O'Hara made decent stops to deny Ethan Robson and Honeyman, Sam Brotherton headed wide and Asoro was refused a penalty when tumbling far too easily following a nudge by Mitchell.

Stryjek kept out substitute Tosin Kehinde in the closing stages but there were late incidents when Poole was dismissed for a second bookable offence, fouling Love, and Honeyman claimed a consolation in the dying seconds from close range. Nonetheless, United won comfortably to move up the table and away from the relegation zone.

Interim Manchester United boss Nicky Butt secured only his third victory as last season's Premier League 2 champions moved away from the drop zone.

Goals by Demi Mitchell, Scott McTominay and Devonte Redmond put the visitors 3-0 ahead at Eppleton Colliery Welfare on Monday night.

United defender Regan Poole, just back from suspension, was sent off for a second yellow card and Sunderland grabbed a late consolation by George Honeyman in injury time.

Two goals in six minutes in the first half set Butt’s side on the way to victory, with Mitchell giving them the lead from the penalty spot in the 27th minute after former United defender Donald Love had tripped Josh Harrop.

McTominay's deflected shot doubled their lead in the 33rd minute and Redmond added the third in the 70th minute.

A big positive for Sunderland was the return of midfielder Jan Kirchhoff after almost three months out a knee injury.

The German played for just over an hour and handed a much-needed boost for Sunderland manager David Moyes.
