Hantaman cedera yang melanda sejumlah pemainnya membuat klub Manchester United terpaksa membawa anak kepala eksekutif klub ke Liga Champions.
Oliver Gill, 19, telah dimasukan kedalam squad setan merah saat bertandang ke Wolfsburg, Jerman Selasa (08/12/09).
Saat melawan Wolfsburg, MU harus kehilangan 12 pemainnya akibat cedera, delapan diantaranya adalah pemain bertahan termasuk Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Wes Brown, Gary Neville dan yang terbaru adalah John O'Shea serta Jonny Evans yang terpaksa absen hingga Januari.
Pemain lain yang dibekap cedera adalah gelandang Owen Hargreaves dan kiper Edwin Van der Sar.
Meski demikian Manchester United sudah dipastikan lolos ke babak 16 besar dan hanya butuh hasil imbang saat melawan Wolfsburg.
Patrice Evra adalah satu-satunya pemain bertahan yang masih dalam kondisi fit saat datang ke Wolfsburg.
Kondisi ini memungkinkan bagi Oliver Gill untuk bermain bersama tim utama.
"Tidak ada nepotisme, jika bagus dia akan main," Begitu tegas Sir Alex Ferguson mengomentari diikutkannya Gill ke dalam skuad inti United
Ferguson memanfaatkan peraturan UEFA yang membolehkan untuk menambah pemain muda didikan akademi sepakbola ke dalam daftar 25 pemain yang sudah didaftarkan saat kejuaraan berlangsung.
Ferguson mengatakan, keputusan memanggil Oliver Gill tidak berdasarkan nepotisme.
''Saya tidak peduli, jika dia bagus dia akan main,'' tegas Ferguson. "Anak saya Darren Ferguson ada di Manchester United selama empat hingga lima tahun ini, dan dia diperlakukan sama dengan anggota lainnya. Hal yang sama juga berlaku untuk Oliver.''
Oliver Gill sendiri baru menjadi pemain profesional pada Juli lalu setelah berlatih sambil sekolah dan memutuskan untuk tidak melanjutkan ke Universitas.
Ayah Oliver, David Gill, 52, adalah seorang akuntan yang bergabung dengan direktur keuangan pada tahun 1997 dan menjabat kepala eksekutif enam tahun kemudian menyusul kepindahan Peter Kenyon ke Chelsea.
Di situs resmi Manchester United, Gill yunior digambarkan sebagai bek tengah yang jangkung dan kuat.
"Dia sangat bagus dalam pertarungan satu lawan satu dan sulit untuk dilewati'' kata Paul McGuinness, pelatih MU usia 18 tahun.

David Gill's increasingly fragile relationship with Manchester United's supporters has led to concerns within Old Trafford that the bad feeling could have a negative impact on his son's breakthrough into the first-team squad.

Oliver Gill, a 19-year-old centre-half, was on the bench when United returned to the top of the Premier League with a 3-0 defeat of Fulham on Sunday but his name was booed when it was read out before kick-off.

The teenager has also been verbally abused during some of United's reserve matches and conducted one post-match interview on the in-house TV station while supporters in the background responded by singing a song to denigrate Malcolm Glazer's ownership of the club.

United are hoping the crowd's reaction last Sunday was a one-off during a highly sensitive timeat Old Trafford with Gill, the club's £1.8m-a-year chief executive, facing heavy criticism for aligning himself with the Glazers having previously sided with the protesters when he tried to talk down the takeover in 2005. Several banners have appeared at matches, one accusing him of "protecting his salary not the club". Security has subsequently been tightened, with the club employing bouncer-style minders in and around the directors' area .

The targeting of Gill's son, albeit by a minority, is the first time that an element have gone against Sir Alex Ferguson's request to ensure that the protests do not affect the team. On the fans' websites many have objected to one of the club's up-and-coming players being made a scapegoat. Equally, others have talked openly about targeting the player as a way of getting at his father.

Gill signed his first professional contract last July and the Surrey-born defender has impressed Ferguson with his performances for the reserve team. The manager and the rest of the coaching staff are aware of the booing and Ferguson is understood to be disappointed. Other officials have insisted it is not a serious cause for concern but acknowledged that it goes against the manager's request for everyone to get behind the team.

United's supporters usually pride themselves on not turning against their own players but this has not always been the case, as Darren Fletcher and Kieran Richardson could testify – or, indeed, Rio Ferdinand after he was photographed dining with Chelsea's then chief executive Peter Kenyon when he was in dispute about the terms of a proposed new contract.

Even Ryan Giggs has been targeted, with ironic cheers when he was substituted during one poor patch, but this is the first time a player has been targeted because of his surname.

Gill was promoted to the squad on Sunday because of injuries to Wes Brown, Rafael da Silva, Jonny Evans and John O'Shea. He is now expected to return to the reserves, with Evans and Rafael expected to be fit for Sunday's game against Liverpool, and it has become apparent to United's coaching staff that he may need strength of character, as well as ability, to continue his progress.

Manchester United reserves coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has heaped praise on Oliver Gill.

The young centre-half has been nominated for United's reserve-team Player of the Year.

"In his first year as a full-time professional, Oliver has been solid as a rock in defence. I just cannot remember him having a game below par or making a single mistake, and he's done very well," Solskjaer told MUTV.

Gill, however, has been the subject of ugly abuse from United's anti-Glazer fans this season as his father is chief executive David Gill.

Padahal, beban yang ditanggung Oliver di MU terbilang berat. Ayahnya yang kini menjabat sebagai Chief Executive MU mendapat kritikan bahkan desakan mundur dari fans anti Glazers.

In his first full season as a professional footballer, Oliver Gill caught the eye and earned a nomination for the 2009/10 Denzil Haroun Reserve Player of the Year award. The 19-year-old met ManUtd.com at Carrington to discuss his hopes for the new season...

Are you enjoying being back in training?
The first couple of weeks were very tough, a lot of running and even the ballwork involved a lot of running, just to build up your base fitness. You expect that, though, and now we've had a couple of games the actual physical work we undergo is less, which is good. All the players were given fitness programmes for the close-season, which were useful. You can't just go into pre-season training having done nothing for seven weeks.

Is it true you had to make a decision between football and education?
Yeah, I had the offer of a university place at Durham starting in September and I could have studied Economics, but I've decided to continue playing football.

(Laughs) Yeah, the money on offer was too good, so rather than be a poor student I decided to carry on playing! I went to see the university and they said they'd defer it, so I still have the option of doing that if I want to. The PFA have also help me set up something with distance learning, so I'll be doing that this year. I'm in the process of registering for that now. That'll be a few hours a week and it shouldn't be too hard to find a few spare hours.

What have you made of the Reserves' pre-season games so far?
The first two were quite pleasing, really. The first few games are always going to be tough because you haven't played for a while, but we had two convincing wins, lost on Saturday at Yeovil and they've all been good games for our fitness too. In general I think our quality was good as well. We've got quite an intensive pre-season set up for us, building up with the quality of opposition and next up we're at Oxford (on Tuesday), and have a few more games from there.

How talented are the new crop of young players in the squad?
There are some very talented players coming through, as people will have seen watching them in the Academy team. A lot of the third years played a lot of Reserve football last year anyway, so they're already used to the required levels. Perhaps we'll see some of the younger under-18s coming up for games as well. There's a lot of talent in the team and they've looked good so far.

What's the plan for you this season?
I think the plan is for me to stay here until Christmas. I've still got lots of things to work on with the coaches here, strength and other areas of my game, and then I'll look to another club to join on loan after Christmas. But I want to keep on improving. I think I did quite well last season, obviously it was very pleasing to get recognition from the coaches and pick up a nomination for the Reserves' player of the year award. Hopefully I can have another strong season this year and top it off with a successful loan spell.

Putra David Gill Tolak Tawaran Kontrak United

Bola.net - Siapa bilang punya ayah yang bekerja di sebuah klub besar akan menjamin sang putra mau memanfaatkan 'fasilitas ekstra' yang ditawarkan?

Hal itulah yang berlaku pada David Gill, CEO Manchester United.

Sebagai defender muda di Old Trafford, tentu banyak yang akan memperkirakan Oliver Gill bermimpi mengikuti jejak sosok legendaris macam Steve Bruce atau Gary Pallister.

Dan sempat masuk cadangan dalam laga Setan Merah kontra Bolton dan West Ham musim lalu, jalan menuju tim utama nampaknya kian lapang untuk Gill junior.

Namun hal yang terjadi justru sebaliknya. Oliver memilih mengikuti jejak sang ayah, David, yang memasuki dunia ekonomi dan meneruskan kuliah ke Durham University.

Gill muda yang baru berusia 20 tahun sejatinya sudah ditawari kontrak di Old Trafford setelah ia didapuk menjadi Pemain Cadangan Terbaik musim kemarin, namun ia malah memilih jalan di luar lapangan hijau.

Ia sempat memiliki dilema yang sama tahun lalu, namun memutuskan bertahan di klub dan bermain empat kali selama menjadi pemain pinjaman di klub League Two, Bradford.

Dua belas bulan berselang, Oliver memutuskan untuk keluar dari United dan sepak bola, bergabung dengan rekan-rekannya di Durham pada akhir September.

Sementara Gill senior adalah akuntan ternama dan bergabung dengan klub di tahun 1997 sebagai direktur keuangan, sebelum akhirnya dipromosikan menduduki kursi papan atas. (mail/row)
