Re: [El Classico] Real Madrid vs Barcelona
El Clasico Key Battles: No Kaka, No Ibrahimovic – How Will Real Madrid & Barcelona Line Up?
-goal.com- Cristiano Ronaldo vs Carles Puyol ‘CR9’ will likely go toe to toe more often with Dani Alves and Maxwell than he will Puyol, but the duo had quite the epic face-off in the reverse fixture at the Camp Nou earlier in the season. The Real Madrid ace, who had only just recovered from his voodoo ankle injury, looked rusty and out of sync as he missed two glorious chances in the opening phases. His menacing threat was eventually nullified and the Blaugrana had their captain to thank. Indeed, Barca’s hardcore centre-back ended the game with a man-of-the-match display as he single-handedly kept his side in the game with some heroic last-ditch tackles, commanding challenges and body-on-the-line blocks. But with Ronaldo in peak fitness and in full stride at this stage of the season, how will ‘Puyi’ cope with him? Gonzalo Higuain vs Gerard Pique Madrid’s leading goalscorer will be up against one of the most talented young defenders in the country. Both players will be running ideas inside their heads on how to beat the other due to their contrasting styles. El Pipa is quick, nimble and tricky on the ground and he rarely relies on service in the air. Pique’s key strength, meanwhile, is his height and his towering presence, although he is no slouch either when it comes to a footrace. If Puyol can put a leash on Ronaldo and if Pique can neutralise Higuain, then the ‘Men In White’ will find it tough finding an outlet for goals. However, if the Barca defensive duo struggle to stamp their authority, it could be a long night for the Catalans. Xavi vs Xabi The X-men on the field, quite literally. Madrid and Barca’s two midfield conductors will be orchestrating the play for their sides. And the balance of the entire game could depend on who emerges victorious in this battle. Xabi will no doubt be required to do more defending than attacking as his main task will surely be to help his Madrid midfield keep Xavi quiet. But he will also be pivotal in his team’s offensive forays and how well Los Blancos do in attack will be down to how quickly and how precise the Basque-born midfielder can distribute the ball forward out of the back. Xavi may be the mastermind behind every Barca attack, but like everyone in the team, he will be required to pull his defensive weight around the pitch and this game will be no different. If anything, the 30-year-old may have to work twice as hard to deprive his opponents of the ball. Andres Iniesta vs Lassana Diarra These two players have not been playing much for their respective sides in recent weeks. They were such vital figures last season, but this term, they have not quite been able to replicate their form. However, a barnstorming performance in the biggest match on the calendar might just give them a motivational push to reinvigorate themselves for the rest of the year. Both players will have something to prove. ‘Don Andres’ has never scored against Madrid – although he doesn’t really score that often anyway – in the eight seasons he has been with the Barca first team, while Lass has been shockingly woeful in the two Clasico outings he has been in since arriving at the Casa Blanca in January 2009. Lionel Messi vs Alvaro Arbeloa, Ezequiel Garay, Raul Albiol & Sergio Ramos Barcelona legend Hristo Stoichkov had warned that the Blancos will be coming at Messi from all sides. The fact that the Argentine had a banzai four-goal outing against Arsenal just five days earlier will make the Merengues even more ruthless. But that’s just how it is when you’re the candidate for the greatest footballer in history throne. Opponents have sometimes tried to be too liberal and generous with Messi, thinking that he will have an off-day or that he won’t be as lethal as the highlight reels make him out to be. But every single one of those teams have been brutally punished. Give him an inch and he will score a hat-trick. Give him an inch and a half and he will crucify you. At one point or another in the game at the Bernabeu on Saturday, ‘Little Lionel’ will have to take on everyone in the Madrid rearguard as he drifts all across the attacking third. It may look like a battle of four against one, but it will be the four in white who will feel that they are being outnumbered. Potential Surprise Heroes El Clasico may boast the biggest collection of superstars on the pitch, but over the years, there have been some unsuspecting heroes who have overshadowed the highest profile, most talented footballers. These players will be looking to add their names onto the list: Alvaro Arbeloa – The former Liverpool man have the worst job of anybody on the planet this weekend when he will be handed the privilege to keep Messi quiet. If he succeeds, he might just be labelled the best defender of the season. Gerard Pique – His partner in defence Puyol was the hero in the slender 1-0 win at the Camp Nou in November. With his propensity to charge forward during set-pieces, he will fancy his chances of getting on the scoresheet. And it could be a priceless winning goal. Guti – The No. 14 will be playing his very final El Clasico, by his own admission, and what a swansong it would be if he could turn on the magic one last time infront of the Bernabeu faithful against his sworn enemies and deliver his beloved Madrid the three points, the bragging rights, and potentially their 32nd La Liga title. Seydou Keita – The Malian midfielder has already scored more league goals so far this term than in any other of his previous seasons in Spain. With all the attention being placed on Messi and Xavi, Keita will relish the extra space that he might be afforded on the pitch. |
