Mendengar nama WALTER SMITH tentunya akan terasa asing ditelinga kita. Manajer Rangers ini ternyata memiliki kedekatan dengan SAF ( manajer UNITED ), Smith pernah menjadi asisten Sir Fergie pada saat menangani timnas Skotlandia di piala dunia 1986 di meksiko. Nama SMITH sebenarnya juga tidak asing di kancah Liga inggris, Smith pernah menjadi manajer EVERTON selama 4 musim sebelum akhirnya mundur dan digantikan D.moyes di 2002. Dibawah asuhannya EVERTON tidak terlalu baik penampilannya, mereka harus berjuang menghindari jurang degradasi selama 4 musim. Fakta ini tentu memberikan gambaran betapa WALTER SMITH memahami betul bagaiman SAF akan menerapkan permainan dilapangan.

Ranger datang ke Liga champions dengan status sebagai jawara Scottish premier league musim 2009/2010. Dengan poin 54 Ranger meninggalkan jauh seteru abadinya Glasgow Celtics. Finalis UEROPA League di tahun 2008 ini tentu tidak ingin hanya menjadi penggembira di ajang champions League. Pada piala Champions Lueague season 2009/2010 Rangers terpuruk di dasar klasmen grup G dengan hanya mengoleksi 2 Poin. Smith tentu tidak ingin keadaan ini akan terulang musim ini.

Musim ini beberapa amunisi baru didatangkan Rangers untuk memperkuat skuadnya. James beatie didatangkan dari STOKE CITY untuk lebih mempertajam lini depan yang sudah di huni Kenny Miller. Yang palimg menarik tentunya didatangkannya Gelandang Man.city berusia 20 tahun yang bersinar bersama timnas Slovenia pada piala dunia lalu yaitu Vlademeir weiss dengan status pinjaman. Mendekati penutupan masa transfer, Rangers melepas winger asal amerika yaitu Damarcus Beasley yang ditransfer klub bundesliga Hannover.

PEMAIN KUNCI

KENNY MILLER
Setelah ditinggal Top skor musim lalu Ranger Kris Boyd yang pindah ke Middlesbrough. Urusan menggedor jala lawan kini berpindah ketangan Kenny Miller. Miller yang sejauh ini telah mencetak 5 gol di Liga domestik SPL menunjukkan betapa berbahaya nya pemain yang satu ini di depan Gawang lawan. Akan tetapi catatan Kenny Miller pada laga internasional tidaklah terlalu baik, baik itu saat membela Ramgers ataupun membela timnas Skotlandia.

STEVEN DAVIES
Gelandang berusia 25 tahun ini memulai karir profesionalnya di Astonvilla pada 2004, sebelum akhirnya berpindah ke Norwich city, Fullham, dan kemudian Rangers. Davies sempat meraih penghargaan “ Young player of the year “ hasil polling yang dilakukan terhadap fans. Musim lalu Davies mencatat 14 assist dan 3 gol dalam penampilannya di SPL. Hal ini cukup menggambarkan betapa sentralnya peran Davies di lini tengah Rangers.

VLADIMIR WEISS
Pada awal penampilannya bersama timnas Slovakia, banyak pihak beranggapan bahwa Weiss bisa masuk skuad karena Pelatih Timnas Slovakia adalah ayahnya. Akan tetapi WEISS menjawab keraguan banyak pihak lewat tampilan cemerlangnya bersama Marik Hamsik. Weiss bergasil membawa Slovakia melaju ke babak 16 besar sebelum akhirnya ditumbangkan paraguay. Pada penampilan perdananya bersama Ranger Weiss juga berhasilkan bermain baik dengan memberikan 1 Asist.

Prediksi jalannya pertandingan

Walter Smith tentu paham betul UNITED berada pada kondisi yang cukup pelik dalam menghadapi match Champions League. Dua tim Merseyside siap menghadang laju UNITED di liga. Merespon kondisi ini, saya rasa smith akan mencoba untuk bermain lebih menyerang. Rangers yang terkenal akan sepakbola negtifnya, akan coba menekan UNTED mulai dari menit awal dengan memanfaatkan tendangan-tendangan spekulasi dari luar kotak penalti. Rangers akan berusaha memaksimalkan serangan balik saat UNITED kehilangan bola. Smith yang memahami betul pola strategi yang akan diterapkan SAF akan berusaha mematikan pergerakan 2 sayap UNITED dengan melakukan double pressing untuk setiap pergerakan pemain disayap.

Jika UNITED mampu bermain Rileks dan tanpa tekanan, saya rasa UNITED akan dengan mudah dapat menaklukan Rangers. Akan tetapi tetap mewaspadai kekuatan lawan merupakan sebuah keharusan.

Manchester United and Rangers step up security for Old Trafford match

The threat of hooliganism when Manchester United play Rangers in the Champions League has led to security measures being implemented to force supporters of the Scottish club to the DW Stadium in Wigan as an official holding ground in the hours before kick-off.

The two clubs are so determined to avoid a mass invasion of Rangers fans into central Manchester they have asked Wigan Athletic for permission to use their ground for "catering and rest facilities" as the only stop-off point on the journey from Glasgow.

Wigan's stadium has also been designated as the official ticket-collection point before a police escort takes the supporters to Old Trafford in a convoy of buses. It will be one of the biggest security operations ever for a match at Old Trafford and has similarities to the measures that have been implemented in the notoriously sensitive matches between Millwall and Leeds United, when supporters have been taken to a service station on the M1 to collect their tickets under heavy police presence.

Rangers have been allocated 4,700 tickets and have stipulated that only registered travel-club members will be eligible to apply and that everyone who is successful must travel on official coaches, with no option but to adhere to the Wigan plan. "All fans will meet at the DW Stadium where they will then be transported to Old Trafford," Rangers said in a statement. "There will be no exceptions."

The club will run a campaign in the build-up to the match on 14 September aimed at discouraging fans from travelling independently. "Supporters without tickets are strongly advised not to travel."

The measures have been brought in after a series of meetings over the last few days involving both clubs, Greater Manchester Police, Strathclyde Police and supporters' group representatives, with the priority being to ensure there are as few Rangers fans in Manchester city centre as possible.

An estimated 150,000 fans invaded Manchester when the team reached the Uefa Cup final in 2008, and when a giant television screen showing the match crashed it led to several hours of rioting, causing hundreds of thousands of pounds' worth of damage. The then prime minister, Gordon Brown, branded the fans "a disgrace" and the first minister, Alex Salmond, described the violence as "shocking and unacceptable."

Two years on, the biggest fear of the police is that ticketless Rangers supporters will again travel in large numbers, and that the potential for trouble has been exacerbated because United's own hooligan element will be seeking revenge.

The fears are such that when Gary Neville, the United club captain, identified Rangers earlier this year as the opposition for his testimonial match the idea was vetoed by the police and Manchester City Council.

There are also concerns about a large number of English trouble-makers planning wide-scale problems when Sir Alex Ferguson's team travel to Ibrox on 24 November and officials from both clubs are expected to discuss the matter when Uefa host a security workshop for Champions League clubs in Vienna tomorrow.

United are facing a reduced ticket allocation for their Premier League game at Sunderland on 2 October because of problems with persistent standing when they have visited the Stadium of Light in previous seasons.

League rules stipulate that away supporters should be given a minimum 3,000 tickets but Sunderland successfully applied to reduce the number to 1,700 last season and are applying for the same again. This has become a recurring theme for United over the last few years, with several clubs including Bolton Wanderers, Middlesbrough and Aston Villa taking similar action.

A convoy of around 70 buses will take Rangers fans south for the club’s Euro clash with Manchester United.

Supporters will be bussed to Old Trafford for the Champions League tie in less than two weeks after an official travel group revealed no rail travel will be available.

Fans are still awaiting further details of the arrangements after discovering they have been barred from Manchester city centre.

In last night’s Evening Times, we reported the 3500 travelling Rangers fans will be taken to nearby Wigan’s stadium and bussed to the city for the match under police escort.

The move to make Manchester city centre a no-go zone for fans comes as the clubs are determined to avoid a repeat of violent clashes in central Manchester which followed the clubs’ 2008 Uefa Cup Final in the city.

Thomas Cook Sport, the official travel partner of Rangers FC, emailed fans stating no train travel will be available.

It is understood English-based fans granted independent travel will also have to report to Wigan. Fans travelling from Scotland are being offered a Thomas Cook day trip for £39 per person.

In the e-mail, the firm said the rail decision came after meetings with the clubs, supporters’ clubs and police.

It added: “The coaches will depart from Ibrox on the morning of the game and stop off at a Rangers Fan Area and continue on to Old Trafford.

“The coaches will depart Old Trafford immediately after the match and return directly to Ibrox. Match tickets will be distributed on board the coaches once they are en-route to Old Trafford.”

Boss relishes Rangers ties



Sir Alex Ferguson is counting United's blessings and air miles following a favourable group-stage draw in the UEFA Champions League.

The Reds will travel overseas to Spain and Turkey, but stay in Britain for a clash with Scottish champions Rangers, managed by his former assistant, Walter Smith.

The United boss told ManUtd.com: "You can't complain about that, it's a good draw for us. You always look at the travelling side of it and the only one that's of any great distance is the trip to Turkey.

"Walter Smith's already been on the phone, talking about tickets for Old Trafford! Like me, he's really looking forward to our games against each other."

Smith was Sir Alex's right-hand man when the Reds won the FA Cup in 2004 but the connections between the United manager and Rangers don't end there, of course. The boss supported the Ibrox club as a boy and later played for them as a striker.
