Sir Alex plans tour team

Sir Alex has revealed the team news ahead of Wednesday's opening DHL tour game against AmaZulu.

Speaking after arriving in Durban, the boss revealed there will be a mix of youth and experience on show with Robbie Brady handed the chance to impress at left-back.

The winger has played there for the Reserves and is set to start, with Jesse Lingard operating further up the pitch and Shinji Kagawa making his debut.

"The priority is to get the experienced players fit but young players will play in each game. It's likely that Kagawa will start with Chicharito.

"Michael Carrick, Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes will play. So too Anders Lindegaard, Lingard and Brady at left-back. Antonio Valencia will play.

"Young Robbie Brady will be at left-back. He's actually an outside-left but we believe there's the possibility he'll develop into a left-back. He was on loan last year at Hull City and did very well. He'll certainly figure at left-back. I don't know how many substitutes will be allowed - we need to establish that - but I'm sure we can be flexible. It's important the young players get a chance to play on such a big occasion.

"Left-back is an area which we're paying attention to. Patrice, in the last five years has played an average of 45-50 games. It's phenomenal. I don't know if anybody else has achieved that. He's still a fit lad and has the same drive and ambition. He's a fighter.

The MTN Football Invitational at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium is United’s first pre-season outing and marks the start of the six-game DHL Tour 2012, taking in three continents. This is the Reds’ first ever encounter with AmaZulu FC, who were formed in 1932 and are one of the oldest clubs in South Africa’s Premier Soccer League. Nicknamed Usuthu, they are also preparing for the new season, having finished seventh in 2011/12.

Ins and outs
United’s 22-man tour party is missing several senior players who are either resting or on Olympics duty. Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed his team will comprise a mixture of youth and experience, with Shinji Kagawa set to make his debut. Last game in South Africa
United faced Kaizer Chiefs as part of the pre-season tour of South Africa in July 2008, winning 4-0 in Johannesburg through goals from Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney, Tom Cleverley and Fraizer Campbell.

Opposition boss
Swede Roger Palmgren took charge in September 2011 and guided AmaZulu to seventh in the ABSA Premiership last season – an improvement on 2010/11, when they narrowly avoided a relegation play-off. The 49-year-old’s managerial CV also includes national team experience with Sierra Leone and Rwanda.

Star men
Goodman Dlamini, an attacking midfielder or second striker, was Usuthu’s top scorer with seven league goals last season. New midfielder and former Liberia captain Dulee Johnson played against United’s Reserves during a trial with Birmingham in 2008.
