Wayne Rooney fired up by fear of Fergie as he helps United strike back
-dailymail.co.uk-

Wayne Rooney revealed that the fear of a rollicking from Sir Alex Ferguson inspired him to drive Manchester United to a dramatic 3-1 win at Hull City on Sunday.

After Arsenal had gambled on the fitness of Cesc Fabregas, who led a 3-0 victory over Aston Villa before limping off injured again, Rooney gave the ball away to start a move that led to Hull’s equaliser.

But the striker, who had already scored his team’s first goal, recovered to set up two late strikes which took United to within two points of league leaders Chelsea.

Celebration: Rooney delights in United's second goal

Rooney said: ‘It wasn’t a nice feeling when I made the mistake and I was certainly scared of what the manager might say. Thankfully, we managed to recover and get the goals we needed to win.’

With Chelsea drawing at Birmingham on Saturday, United made hard work of victory against a spirited Hull team but are now in a good position ahead of Wednesday’s home game against Wigan.

Rooney added: ‘It’s a mad league. But it’s exciting to be part of it.’

Ferguson gave Rooney the captain’s armband after Ryan Giggs came off in the second half and he paid tribute to his most valuable player.

Eye on the ball: Rooney drove his side to victory after making a costly error

The United manager said: ‘The mistake was Rooney’s only bad moment. He was exceptional today.

‘He has that desire. He is a natural winner and has that great determination to do well. He would have been hurt by the mistake but he more than rectified it.

‘This is a crucial period for us now but we have two of our centre backs fit again and we are looking better.’

Christmas Gifts From Rooney
-manchesterunited.vitalfootball.co.uk-

It was a fitting game for Christmas - which, of course, has already passed. But still, it seemed that players were in the mood for handing out gifts, none more so than our Wayne Rooney.

Hull, our opponents of the afternoon, were spirited and determined and their efforts to disrupt our football were quite efficient. It worked well on Rooney who covered plenty of ground but gave the ball away way too often in the first 30 minutes as United pressed and created chances but showed great vulnerability at the back. In truth, both Boateng and Hunt could have opened the scoring in a very open first half - but United were the more dangerous side.

Our cause was helped immeasurably by the fact that Fergie could field an almost full-strength side. Rafael, Brown and Vidic were all rushed back so that for the first time in weeks we had a back four consisting exclusively of defenders. Their lack of match fitness was obvious and it has to be said that Vidic and Brown never formed a good partnership - there's a lack of organisation when both Van der Sar and Ferdinand are out.

But young Rafael played very well and had he not been shocked by finding himself clean through on goal he could have given us the lead after an amazing run through the middle and some fine one-touch passing involving Berbatov and Carrick as well. But defensively, we weren't great while in attack we kept on squandering chances: Giggs, Rooney, Berbatov and of course Rafael all had good opportunities. We could not capitalise even when Boaz Myhill fluffed a backpass (Christmas spirit, again) and it went straight to Giggs but eventually Rooney was crowded out.

Just when it looked certain that the first half would end goalless, Fletcher (who was excellent in the first half alongside a somewhat off-colour Carrick) got the ball on the right flank, he whipped in a low cross which Rooney turned in from close range. Christmas gift for our fans at last.

I guess Fergie instructed the troops to keep possession better in the second half and for a while they heeded this. Hull kept on pressing and harassing though and it made the game a real scrappy affair. But their way was vindicated when Rooney was hurried into handing out another gift: a horrible backpass which Kuszczak had no chance to get as Fagan got there first, he crossed to the far post where Altidore ran into Rafael and fell over. It was never a penalty but of course Wiley could not resist such an opportunity after what happened in the aftermath of our 2-2 draw against Sunderland.

Fagan converted the spotkick and suddenly we were struggling, our composure gone. It did not help that Giggs had one of his worst days and that Fergie, inexplicably, withdrew Valencia and brought on Park not long after the equaliser. True, Antonio did not sparkle but his pace caused some trouble and he looked likely to be able to exert some influence on the last 20 minutes.

In the end, it was a flowing counter-attack after a Hull corner - for they attacked with more and more courage as the game progressed - which put United back in front: Park released Berbatov who passed for Giggs. The Welshman threaded a perfect through ball into the path of Rooney who sent in a low cross which Park would have turned in but Dawson, keeping in with the Christmas spirit, tapped it in for him.

This destroyed Hull: their fire has gone out. It looked as though they lost all hope after conceding again which is not surprising, considering their recent scoring record which is abysmal. And United, finally, shunned the whole Christmas thing: we ruthlessly finished the job. Rooney who played with insane determination after his blunder ran half the length of the pitch to get on the end of a Brown header. Then he sent an incisive and precise pass between the legs of a defender which Berbatov tapped in at the far post.

And that was it. Rooney had an error-ridden game but with one goal and two assists you cannot really knock him. United looked rusty and not that great but we created plenty of chances and played some good football. It was a deserved win and a much-needed Christmas boost. We are only two points off the pace, as Chelsea can't win games to save their lives which is sort of amusing - we had the biggest injury crisis imaginable and they still could not pull away. Hopefully we'll show a bit more consistency in 2010. And hopefully they won't.

Hull City 1 Manchester United 3: Wayne Rooney runs United show... And Wiley lends a helping hand, too
-dailymail.co.uk-

Sir Alex Ferguson might have dared suggest that the fat boys done good, that Alan Wiley and Wayne Rooney both played their part on Sunday in helping Manchester United secure a most important victory.

Wiley, reunited with Ferguson for the first time since that infamous blast of the hairdryer, did his bit in awarding Hull City just one of the two penalties their efforts so richly deserved.

Had Hull got the first one in the 21st minute, and taken the lead against a United side travelling here on the back of two defeats in three Barclays Premier League matches, it might have been very different. Another example, as Rooney put it, of what a ‘mad league’ it is this season.

But Wiley’s failure to see that Wes Brown had fouled Richard Garcia enabled the other slightly thick-set chap to shine with a performance that reminded us of his importance not just to his club but his country. Rooney finished wearing the captain’s armband, and rightly so.

Title charge: Rooney celebrates as Andy Dawson turns his cross past Boaz Myhill

His ubiquity almost proved his undoing at one point, because had he not chosen to drop into the left-back position he would not have delivered the poorly executed backpass that presented Hull with the opportunity to equalise.

But this nevertheless amounted to a remarkable contribution from England’s finest player, another demonstration of his strength of mind, his skills and his truly extraordinary reserves of energy.

Rooney might have always looked a bit heavy but don’t let the appearance fool you. The man is a phenomenal athlete — one of those rare examples of someone who combines explosive power and pace with the stamina of a middle-distance specialist.

With that fitness, however, comes the kind of finesse that makes him the heartbeat of this United side in the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo.

On Sunday he was predator as well as provider, the manner in which he delivered the final ball for Dimitar Berbatov to score United’s third goal simply joyous in its execution. Rooney looked up not once but three times before guiding an exquisite pass across the Hull penalty area and into the Bulgarian’s path. Brilliant. Just brilliant.

Double act: Rooney and Berbatov celebrate victory

Rooney scored his 13th league goal of the season on Sunday and United owe much to him for the fact they remain as close as they are to Chelsea.

They might have suffered five defeats already this season but they have made it to halfway only two points behind their rivals, and a point down on the number they amassed after 19 games last year, because in Rooney they have a player who wins them so many matches.

Never was that more apparent here against the not-so-easy Tigers. Hull were impressive — not least in defence, where Anthony Gardner and Kamil Zayatte were terrific, and in midfield where Seyi Olofinjana and George Boateng also excelled.

But in Rooney, United had the one player capable of breaking them, the one player capable of fighting back — even after making the mistake that led to Craig Fagan’s equaliser — and landing the decisive blows.

United started well enough with a couple of decent chances for Ryan Giggs and were strengthened by the return of Nemanja Vidic and Brown to their defence.

But, if confidence remained an issue after losing 3-0 to Fulham last weekend, it certainly showed when Brown took Garcia rather than the ball midway through the first half. Nobody here is suggesting Wiley was a little laboured in covering the ground but had the referee been a bit closer to the action he might have seen that for himself.

United survived that particular scare and they escaped again when Tomasz Kuszczak produced a terrific save to deny Olofinjana from close range. It was a super move featuring a fine cross from Fagan and a sweetly taken half-volley from his powerfully built colleague. Stephen Hunt also threatened.

Level pegging: Craig Fagan made it 1-1 from the spot

Such was the frenetic nature of the encounter, Hull were also under pressure. Boaz Myhill did well to deny both Rooney and Rafael da Silva and, when the Hull goalkeeper sliced a clearance, it was Boateng who rushed to his rescue.

But when Darren Fletcher drove in a cross moments before the interval, Giggs did enough to divert the ball beyond Zayatte and so allow Rooney to strike from inside the six-yard box. Wiley was not that popular with Hull’s supporters after failing to award that first-half penalty.

‘You’re in Fergie’s pocket,’ they cried, not least for the leniency he showed towards Patrice Evra for giving him only one yellow card.

But the Staffordshire official did go some way to making amends when he invited Fagan to level the scores. It was fair enough, given Da Silva’s nudge in the back on a fast-advancing Jozy Altidore after Rooney had guided his back pass into the path of Fagan.

That United responded at all owed much to Rooney. It was a neat ball from Giggs that ignited the move but Rooney’s perfectly timed run and a perfectly weighted cross that was intended for Ji-Sung Park lured Andy Dawson into scoring a 73rd-minute own goal he will wince at when he watches it again.

The best, however, was yet to come when, after 82 minutes, we got another demonstration of the rapid counter-attacking football that has long been United’s trademark, but also a reflection of Rooney’s amazing football brain.

A long punt from the Hull goalkeeper was met by the head of Vidic outside his own penalty box, and within five seconds, United had scored again.

Rooney collected a bouncing ball effortlessly, then opened his stride and, with three driving touches, advanced towards the Hull area. Looking up and looking dangerous, he angled a perfect pass for Berbatov to tap in from close range. Football looks so simple when it’s played like this.

berita dari the sun yah???.......

In other news, The Sun has today reported that Dimitar Berbatov is facing three months out with knee surgery required. Berbatov has apparently been playing through the pain on injections but will need to have the surgery at some point. The good news is that Bulgaria aren’t going to the World Cup, so there’s the possibility we could wait until the end of the season before booking him in.
