Wayne Rooney today tipped Tottenham as dark horses for the Champions League and revealed his admiration for Harry Redknapp's side after helping Manchester United join them in the quarter-finals.

United went through 2-1 on aggregate after beating Marseille by that score at Old Trafford last night thanks to a brace of goals from Javier Hernandez, which kept their Treble bid alive.

Barcelona are the favourites for the Champions League given the way they beat Arsenal 3-1 last week, when the Gunners failed to even muster a shot on target.

However, Rooney will have his eyes as much on Spurs as on the La Liga leaders when the draw is made in Nyon, Switzerland on Friday. The United striker said: "We're really happy to get through to the quarters, I thought it was good performance because Marseille are a good side with big, strong players.

"Now we've got to look and see who we get. Barcelona are the favourites and are playing some great football but I'm also enjoying watching Tottenham play at the minute.

"It's great to see them in their first year in the Champions League the way they play. I've been very happy we play on different days to them because it's good watching them."

Under Redknapp, Spurs have enjoyed a fantastic first season in Europe's biggest club competition, beating Inter Milan and AC Milan already and out-lasting their north London rivals.

But after surviving a nervy final few minutes against Marseille following Wes Brown's late own goal, it's clear United are also serious contenders.

And Rooney has been quick to shrug off accusations that his team have been boring this season.

"If you look at Inter Milan when they won the Champions League last season, you wouldn't say they were the most entertaining team to watch," he said. "But they managed to win the Treble which is there in history. I'd take that."

United's only problem - like Arsenal - is a growing injury list in defence. They had to play Marseille without Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, who both have calf problems, and then lost Rafael and John O'Shea to hamstring injuries during the match.

Unless Jonny Evans is able to recover from calf damage that has kept him out of United's last eight games, Ferguson will have only four fit defenders for Saturday's game against Bolton.

That quartet includes Brazilian youngster Fabio, who became his side's third right-back last night even though most of his first-team experience has come on the left flank.

It is a similar position to the one United were in in December 2009, when both Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher found themselves in defence for a match at Fulham.

United lost that game 3-0 Carrick is keeping his fingers crossed that he is not pressed into service as an emergency defender again.

"It did get a mention in the changing room," said Carrick. "I said to Mike Phelan 'I don't fancy that again'.

"It is never nice to get the injuries of course. It is disappointing when you pick up a number in a similar position.

"But I don't think we are that desperate yet and hopefully I won't be called upon."

However, Ryan Giggs does see a reason why United may be able to handle their injury crisis.

"The international break is coming at a good time," said the winger. "We have a tough game on Saturday and if we can get through that then we have two weeks to get more bodies back. I hope that's the case. We're still in three competitions and it's always going to be tough - but we'll go for it."
