Manchester United Transfer News: Red Devils Must Keep Pressing for Arturo Vidal

Manchester United's bid to sign Arturo Vidal from Juventus might be becoming rather protracted and expensive, but the pursuit of a player of such quality is well worth it for the Red Devils.

As reported by the Press Association, via The Guardian, the player himself has said that he would be happy to stay in Turin if his proposed move to Old Trafford falls through, but the hierarchy at United should not be.

Not since the likes of Roy Keane and a youthful Paul Scholes graced the pitch at the Theatre of Dreams have United had a genuine box-to-box player that can take control of a game.

Chile international Vidal can do just that. The 27-year-old midfielder could become the foundation upon which new manager Louis van Gaal sets about rebuilding a team that failed to qualify for European competition for the first time in 25 years last season.

It's tough to pick out a player from the Manchester United team with whom to compare Vidal. He is a different type of player to those already at Old Trafford—one who likes to get up and down the pitch and can contribute in both an attacking and defensive sense.

Somewhat surprisingly, he has more key passes per game (1.31) than Michael Carrick (0.97) and Marouane Fellaini (0.25), and yet he also betters the United pair in tackles won, at an average of three per game, compared with 1.48 and 1.94 for the aforementioned duo, per Squawka.

And while Carrick mustered one solitary goal (which was one more than Fellaini) in 29 games last season, Vidal chipped in with 11 in 32 games for Juve, per WhoScored.com.

Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera has already been acquired from Athletic Bilbao this summer. While the 24-year-old is not a box-to-box player like Vidal, he can operate in either an advanced or deep-lying role. The prospect of Vidal and Herrera dovetailing in the United midfield is a mouthwatering one.

However, Juve director Giuseppe Marotta is well aware of his player's value—both in terms of cost and importance to his own club—and is reluctant to sell, as reported by the BBC:

"Vidal is a Juventus player and we have never put him up for sale. A lot of clubs have asked for him but we have never sat down to negotiate. We want to keep him. From experience, I know that a player is the one that decides his future."

United must make sure they persuade Vidal to push through his exit and that Old Trafford is the place for him. The timing could be right.

Vidal won three Serie A titles at Juventus under coach Antonio Conte, but the midfielder's Italian mentor left the club this week. With former AC Milan manager Massimiliano Allegri coming in as a replacement, per The Guardian, United must press their interest.

Despite Marotta's claims, it is believed that a £35 million deal is under negotiation for the former Bayer Leverkusen player. United also seem willing to up that offer to include Portugal winger Nani, per the Daily Express, or even up their bid to £40 million.

It would seem that a deal is still in the offing, or as Everything Man Utd put it:

Quote:
Everything Man Utd
@everything_utd
Lets look at facts. Vidal expressed his admiration for Utd. LVG spoke of his admiration for Vidal. Juve want the best deal. It will happen!
Vidal's tenacious style won many admirers, as he helped Chile advance to the last 16 of the 2014 World Cup and became an instant favourite at Old Trafford with similar performances.

The capture of such a talent would also send out a clear statement that United intend to get back on top, and quickly.

A player with Vidal's ability could be the difference between playing in the Champions League next season and another watching from the sidelines.

United have some negotiating to do, and they need to do it well.

Lagi hotttt.... Kabarnya Vidal udah setuju gabung United dan tinggal nego harga dengan Juve. Sangar... 2 gelandang sekali jeda transfer. Bener2 menunjukkan titik lemah United klo emang dibeli. Setelah panic buy, kini Ed Wood sudah mulai belajar nego.

Vidal - Herrera, sangar jadi... tinggal CB yang masih fardhu ain dikuatkan.

Arturo Vidal's £47m move to Manchester United is being held up because of Louis van Gaal's doubts about knee injury, claims Chile boss Jorge Sampaoli

* Sampaoli says Van Gaal has doubts about Vidal's knee injury
* Suggests £47m fee was agreed in principle between United and Juventus
* Vidal had knee cartilage surgery in May, was rushed back for World Cup
* Coach claims he was at 30, 40 per cent during tournament in Brazil
* United looking for new signings to rebuild Premier League squad
* Juve boss Massimiliano Allegri eager to keep Vidal and Paul Pogba

Arturo Vidal's transfer from Juventus to Manchester United has hit a snag because of doubts about the Chilean's fitness, according to his national team coach.

Jorge Sampaoli, quoted in El Mercurio, says that United boss Louis van Gaal is wary of spending £47m because of the midfielder's problematic knee injury.

Vidal has been a long-term target for the Premier League side, with reports suggesting a move has been close all summer.

Future doubt: Arturo Vidal's move to Manchester United and Juventus could still go ahead

'I know that the main problem in Vidal’s $80m (£47m) transfer from Juventus to Manchester United is Louis van Gaal’s doubt over the improvement of Arturo's knee,' Sampaoli told the Chilean publication.

The Argentinean coach also believes Vidal was just '30 or 40 per cent' of the player he was for Juve last season at the World Cup, and could be paying for pushing himself too hard.

Vidal had knee cartilage surgery at the beginning of May and was rushed back to feature in Brazil.

Not ready: Sampaoli claims Vidal was at '30 or 40 percent' of his potential at the World Cup in Brazil

He is currently on tour with the Old Lady in Asia, and Massimiliano Allegri is eager to keep hold of his stars, including Paul Pogba.

The boss said: 'Vidal and Pogba are delighted to be here and I am delighted to coach them.'

Allegri also revealed that Pogba could be used in a more attacking role this season.

Manchester United Transfer News: Arturo Vidal Saga Will Define 2 Clubs' Seasons

They say one man’s pain is another man’s pleasure, and in the case of the summer transfer window, it’s football clubs from around the world that go through such a whirlwind of emotions.

Being such a monumental force in the world game, Manchester United usually enjoy the brighter side of transfers, and the build-up to the 2014/15 campaign has been no different.

With Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera making the switch to Old Trafford, the Red Devils suddenly have their optimism back, but they’re not quite finished yet.

It seems as if the saga of Juventus’ Arturo Vidal has been dragging on for a generation now, but such are the stipulations of the move that it’s bound to take time.

The Chile international was one of Juventus’ standout performers during their title-winning campaign of 2013/14, putting together endless dynamic displays in the club’s formidable midfield.

While defensive-minded, Vidal proved that he can also produce the goods at the business end of the pitch—grabbing 11 league goals and providing five assists, according to WhoScored.com.

Juventus have rather dominated Italian football since the turn of the decade, but how they’d cope without Vidal should the midfielder move to Old Trafford has come under question of late.

While Juventus are blessed with a wealth of central midfield talent, the spark that Vidal brings to the fold is tough to replace, and Inter Milan’s Mateo Kovacic told La Gazzetta dello Sport that the Chilean would be sorely missed if he departs, via Ben Gladwell of ESPN FC:

“If Vidal leaves, then they are going to have lost a lot. Arturo is a top player and there are not many central midfielders capable of scoring 10-15 goals and providing 10 assists per season. He's a complete player.”

A complete player he most certainly is, but when you take a look at the other options in Juventus’ midfield, the Italian giants’ outlook doesn’t seem so bleak.

The fine wine that is Andrea Pirlo is still dominating games at the age of 35, while the likes of Claudio Marchisio and Simone Padoin can also do a job alongside him keeping play ticking over—that’s without even mentioning French sensation Paul Pogba.

Vidal’s place in the side last season meant that Pogba had to adopt a more cautious approach, but with the Chile star out of the picture, he can truly flourish in the attacking role.

That’s something that new Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri plans to do, too, revealing during the club’s pre-season tour of Indonesia that he wants to push the Frenchman forward—per Joe Ridge of the Daily Mail:

“I will try to use Pogba more in attack. He is one of the best young players in the world, with enormous technical and physical qualities. Having said that, there is also still plenty of room for improvement.”

Vidal being away from Turin may just aid Pogba on his quest for improvement, and shaping the team around the 21-year-old could see the Old Lady become even stronger.

While Juventus’ side would likely cope without Vidal, it seems that Manchester United capturing the 27-year-old is imperative in their bid to become English football’s overlords once again.

Though United faltered all over the pitch under David Moyes last term, central midfielder was particularly concerning.

Not just £27 million flop Marouane Fellaini, but household names like Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher simply didn’t perform, leaving other clubs to just bypass them on the way to success.

The chances of individual performances getting better just because of new manager Louis van Gaal are nil, and it was no surprise to see the Dutchman bring in the highly rated Herrera in the transfer window.

The 24-year-old is as versatile a midfielder as they come, accepting defensive responsibilities while also having the injection of quality going forward—as Guillem Balague revealed:

Quote:
Guillem Balague ✔
@GuillemBalague
Herrera can play as number 10 or centre mid, a 'volante', right or left of the defensive midfielder in a 4-3-3. Clever guy anyway
What he ideally needs is a player alongside him that adopts a similar, dynamic approach—someone like Vidal.

While Carrick, Fellaini and Fletcher have proven to be useful players in the past, there’s very little chance of them being the first names on Van Gaal’s team sheet, and a new, central midfield era simply has to begin at Old Trafford.

Vidal is the ideal candidate to lead the revolution with Herrera, but if United can’t find a way to clinch his signature, it could be another long season for the Red Devils.

Arturo Vidal ‘tells friends he wants to quit Juventus for Manchester United transfer’

Wednesday 6 Aug 2014 7:40 am

Arturo Vidal wants out of Juventus – according to new reports (Picture: Getty) Arturo Vidal has reportedly told friends he wants to quit Juventus this summer as speculation continues to grow over a move to Manchester United.
The Red Devils have been linked with Vidal for most of the summer, with reports in Chile suggesting that Louis van Gaal has made him the club’s top transfer target.
Juve insist the player will stay put, but Sky Italia now says that Vidal has told his close friends that he is looking for a transfer away.
The news was revealed by journalist Mario Giunta on live TV in Italy, fueling speculation that the 27-year-old is destined to end up at Old Trafford.
It’s understood that United are yet to make an official offer for the player but have spoken to his agent about a five-year deal worth £200,000-a-week.
United’s hopes of landing Vidal appeared to be dashed yesterday when a post on Instagram appeared to suggest he wanted to stay at Juventus, but the Italia media has since confirmed the account is fake.

Manchester United Transfer News: Arturo Vidal Delay Pinned on Louis Van Gaal

Chile boss Jorge Sampaoli believes Arturo Vidal's prospective move from Juventus to Manchester United is being halted due to Louis van Gaal's concerns over the midfielder's knee.

As reported by Chilean paper El Mercurio (h/t Matt Morlidge of the Daily Mail) Sampaoli suggests the new United manager isn't comfortable with dropping a large sum on the player while he continues to battle through injury.

"I know that the main problem in Vidal's $80m (£47m) transfer from Juventus to Manchester United is Louis van Gaal's doubt over the improvement of Arturo's knee," said Sampaoli. The national coach also indicated Vidal was playing at "30 or 40 percent" during the 2014 World Cup, where his willingness to battle through the pain was obvious.

Such a situation throws up something of a dilemma for Van Gaal. United fans are craving the box-to-box midfielder's arrival, especially after a summer of speculation. While the new boss will want to land a marquee signing during his first transfer window at the club, it is risky to drop the reported £47 million on a player who is yet to prove his knee has healed since Chile's exit from the World Cup.

Van Gaal is also known to be courting Roma's Kevin Strootman, whose status is similar to Vidal's. The Dutch midfielder is set to return to competitive football at the start of next season after being injured in March, but Van Gaal has hinted he isn't ready to commit until the 24-year-old proves the damage to his cruciate ligament is repaired.

"Strootman I can judge, but he has been injured for more than six months," said Van Gaal, per Sky Sports. "We have to wait and see how he comes back. It's not so easy to come back out of an injury, so we'll wait and see."

The financial difficulty here becomes more apparent when you consider United's potential battle against UEFA's Financial Fair Play rules. Should Van Gaal snap Vidal up and qualify for the Champions League during his first season, the governing body will inspect United's ability to break even next campaign.

Finances from 2014-15 will be included in this, meaning the club could effectively throw away a large part of their transfer kitty if Vidal comes and doesn't play. Worse still, the Red Devils would be inspected if they qualified for the Europa League, a potential double whammy if Vidal was ruled out and United weren't receiving the lucrative payments of the Champions League.

The club simply cannot afford to take this risk when an estimated £30-£70 million isn't being made due to the lack of a European appearance this season, per ESPN. Van Gaal has the transfer money to deploy, there's no doubt about that, but he would be foolish to land the superstar midfielder if his knee continues to be a problem.

Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri will certainly be pleased if United's interest waned. The new manager needs to ensure his squad make the transition away from Antonio Conte's successful era with aplomb, meaning he will need Vidal and Paul Pogba in the heart of midfield.

"Vidal and Pogba are delighted to be here and I am delighted to coach them," said Allegri, per Morlidge.

A similar situation to Strootman's is likely to take shape, with United waiting it out until January before attempting to land their man.

Van Gaal is set to make decisions on his squad in the coming days, as reported by United's official website. He will be pleased with the side's successful run in the International Champions Cup, which saw the new boss deploy his 3-5-2 formation to devastating effect. That said, United's midfield of Ander Herrera and Darren Fletcher could certainly be improved with a destructive alternative.

Vidal's potential move may die out without further acknowledgement if Sampaoli's words ring true. Van Gaal isn't the type of manager to risk a momentous sum on one player who may not be firing at 100 percent.

However, if Vidal proves his fitness during Juventus' current tour of Asia, we can expect the rumours to multiply once more.
