[2016/17] FA Cup
FA introduce fourth substitute for the 2016-17 FA Cup competition in order to trial the system used at the Copa America
* Teams in next season's FA Cup will be allowed a fourth substitute * The law comes in from the quarter-finals and if the tie reaches extra time * Football Association are trialling the system used in 2016 Copa America Teams in the 2016-17 FA Cup are set to be allowed to use a fourth substitute during extra time as the Football Association trials a new format for the first time. The innovation - which follows the announcement of a sudden-death format for the last eight stage - will only apply to teams playing in the quarter-finals, semi-finals and Wembley final. It means clubs who have used their regular three substitutions in normal time would be able to make an additional replacement should the game go beyond 90 minutes. The 2016-17 FA Cup will see the introduction of a fourth substitute for the first time. Next season's tournament will see the introduction of an extra substitution allowed in extra time only The latest trial scheme to be planned for next season's FA Cup was also trialled in the Copa America earlier this summer with English football's most famous competition now set to follow suit. FA bosses believe they must make the tournament as appealing as possible to fans and are willing to trial new rules and regulations to see if they are a success. The rule is subject to approval from the game's law-makers the International Football Association Board (IFAB), but with no replays in the quarter-finals, the FA say new initiatives will continue to be explored to ensure the FA Cup retains its status and appeal. 'The Emirates FA Cup is renowned for its great history and tradition but, as the game's governing body, it is important The FA continues to look at how it can further add to the drama and spectacle of a competition loved by millions around the world,' said FA chief executive Martin Glenn. 'With the cup now adopting a straight knock-out format from the quarter-finals onwards, the introduction of a fourth substitute in extra time will bring extra intrigue and interest.' Alongside an extra substitute, the FA Cup will feature a sudden-death format in the quarter-finals and beyond Glenn, who this week confirmed the appointment of Sam Allardyce as the new England manager, added: 'From a technical point of view, it will be interesting to see how managers use the chance to make an additional substitution in such high-profile games and the impact it has on the final result. 'Player welfare and being mindful of the number of games people play at the elite level has also been a consideration.' Last season's FA Cup final, in which Manchester United were 2-1 winners over Crystal Palace at Wembley, went to extra time. Jesse Lingard's 110th minute goal secured victory for United but with both teams having made all three of their substitutes in the regulation 90 minutes, no further changes were possible in the extra half an hour of action. Should that happen again in the season ahead, both teams would be able to bring on a fresh pair of legs if they felt the need to do so. This season’s competition gets under way on Friday, August 5 with 184 extra preliminary round ties taking place. A total of 736 clubs will be involved this season with the show-piece finale coming at Wembley on Saturday, May 27 next year, the tenth anniversary since the national stadium reopened. Code:

Re: [2016/17] FA Cup
FA Cup second-round draw: Four-time winners Bolton and Sheffield United to play in clash of League One teams
* Bolton and Sheffield United share eight FA Cup wins between them * League One sides Charlton and MK Dons also drawn against each other * Non-league Braintree Town travel to south London to take on Millwall Bolton Wanderers and Sheffield United will take a break from their League One promotion bids to play one another in the FA Cup second-round. The two teams, who have each won the famous competition four times throughout their history, will play at the Macron Stadium after being matched in Monday's draw. Charlton Athletic and Milton Keynes Dons make up another League One clash while non-league Braintree Town will travel to south London to take on Millwall. Westfields, who play in the ninth tier and are the lowest ranked side left in the competition, will host Bury or AFC Wimbledon, if they can beat Curzon Ashton in a first-round replay. Sitting fourth in the Midland League Premier Division, Westfields drew 1-1 with Curzon Ashton on Saturday and now find themselves potentially two wins away from a third-round tie. Meanwhile, Rochdale will face Carlisle, if they overcome Maidstone, while Fleetwood will travel to Shrewsbury if they can beat Southport. Bristol Rovers, who are fifth in League One, were held by League Two side Crawley Town last weekend and the winner of the replay will be up against either Taunton or Barrow. Chesterfield are at home to Wycombe, Oxford United face a trip to Macclesfield Town and Oldham are away to National League side Lincoln. Newport County could have an all-League Two clash at Plymouth but first they will have to beat Alfreton Town in a replay. Oldham travel to National League side Lincoln, while Port Vale are at home to Hartlepool. League Two sides Luton and Yeovil are also due to meet but only if Yeovil beat Solihull Moors, against whom they drew 2-2 at home on Saturday. Quote:
Whitehawk of National League South have been also been handed a home tie against Northampton, if they can beat Stourbridge at the second time of asking. Blackpool host Gillingham or Brackley Town and Woking are up against League Two's Accrington Stanley. Cheltenham or Crewe will travel to National League side Sutton United and Cambridge United or Dover Athletic are at home to Morecambe or Coventry. In a potentially all-National League tie, Eastleigh have been handed a home draw against Dagenham & Redbridge or Halifax. Eastleigh, however, will first have to beat League One club Swindon. Code:

Re: [2016/17] FA Cup
United drawn at home in the FA Cup FA Cup holders Manchester United will be at home to Reading in the third round of the 2016/17 competition, with the tie to be played between Friday 6 and Monday 9 January. United were represented by ball no.25 in Monday evening's draw, which was made in London by former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard and Arsenal legend Ian Wright. The Reds were the third home team to be pulled out and were swiftly paired with the Royals, who are currently third in the Championship under the management of ex-United defender Jaap Stam. Stam was appointed Reading manager in June this year after several seasons as a coach in his native Netherlands with PEC Zwolle and then Ajax. As a player, he won the FA Cup as part of United's unpredecented Treble in 1998/99, his first campaign with the club. After leaving the Reds in 2001 he went on to serve Lazio, Milan and Ajax on the pitch. The Dutchman's former Reds team-mate Andy Cole told BBC Sport: "No doubt Jaap will get a great reception when he goes back to Old Trafford. He was a superb centre-half for United." United last played Reading in March 2013, beating them 1-0 at Old Trafford in the Premier League following a thrilling 4-3 win earlier in the same season, when all seven goals were scored in the first half at the Madejski Stadium. The two clubs have been drawn against each other in the FA Cup eight times, with the Reds progressing on seven occasions including the fourth-round clash of 1996 (3-0 away) and the fifth-round ties of 2007 (3-2 away after a replay) and 2013 (2-1 at home). The other cup meetings have all been in the third round - United went through after a replay in 1912 and Reading had their revenge in 1927 following two rematches. The Reds won at the first time of asking in 1936 and again in 1937 but were taken to a second game by the Royals in 1955 before marching on. FULL FA CUP THIRD-ROUND DRAW Ipswich Town v Lincoln/Oldham Barrow v Rochdale United v Reading Hull v Swansea Sunderland v Burnley QPR v Blackburn Millwall v Bournemouth West Ham v Manchester City Brighton v MK Dons/Charlton Blackpool v Barnsley Wigan v Nottm Forest Birmingham v Newcastle Chelsea v Notts County Middlesbrough v Sheff Weds West Brom v Derby County Everton v Leicester Liverpool v Newport/Plymouth Wycombe v Northampton/Stourbridge Watford v Burton Albion Preston v Arsenal Cardiff v Fulham Stoke v Wolves Cambridge Utd v Leeds Bristol City v Shrewsbury/Fleetwood Huddersfield v Port Vale Tottenham v Aston Villa Brentford v Halifax/Eastleigh Bolton v Crystal Palace Norwich v Southampton Sutton Utd v AFC Wimbledon Accrington v Luton Rotherham v Oxford United/Macclesfield Town

Re: [2016/17] FA Cup
Sutton host Arsenal as Lincoln travel to Burnley in the FA Cup fifth round
* Sutton, who shocked Leeds, face Arsenal in the FA Cup fifth round * Fellow National League side Lincoln travel to Premier League side Burnley * FA Cup holders Manchester United have drawn a local derby with Blackburn National League Sutton United, the lowest ranked team remaining in the FA Cup, have been drawn against Arsenal in the fifth round. Lincoln, who knocked out Brighton, travel to Premier League Burnley. The Sutton clash is sure to draw plenty of interest as they host an Arsenal side who won back-to-back FA Cups in 2014 and 2015. The clash will see Arsene Wenger take his men to the 5,000-capacity Gander Green Lane to play on United's 3G pitch. It should see the U's get a nice cash boost as the TV cameras arrive at Gander Green Lane for the second round in succession. It is the first time in the history of the competition two non-League sides have reached the last 16. Elsewhere the draw throws up some intriguing ties with no all top-flight fixtures in the eight games. Manchester United travel to Lancashire rivals Blackburn and Wolves' reward for beating Liverpool is a visit from Premier League leaders Chelsea. Tottenham travel to west London to take on Fulham, who knocked out Hull in the fourth round. Oxford get North East opposition again, after conquering Newcastle, as they travel to Middlesbrough. Championship promotion hopefuls Huddersfield host Pep Guardiola's Manchester City with Millwall playing the winner of the replay between Leicester and Derby. The fixtures are due to be played across the weekend of February 17-20 with the television selections to decide the schedule. Quote:
