Man Utd boosted by Obertan debut



Winger Gabriel Obertan has made his debut for Manchester United - three months after joining the Premier League champions from Bordeaux.

The former France Under-21 star joined United on a four-year deal in July from the French champions in a £3m transfer but was sidelined by a spinal problem.

The 20-year-old Obertan played 45 minutes in United's 3-0 Manchester Senior Cup win over Oldham at Hyde.

Brazilian full-back Rafael da Silva also returned from injury in the win.

Rafael has been out since undergoing shoulder surgery in the summer.

Obertan spent the second half of last season on loan at Ligue 1 side Lorient, where he made 15 appearances and scored once.

He scored against England Under-21s in March and took the most valuable player award in this year's Toulon International youth tournament.

2 mins Obertan closes down Philip Ojapah, forcing the Latics defender to surrender possession to Rafael, who starts a counter attack. Brandy leads it, Obertan joins and is caught in possession after his first touch.

4 mins Gabriel fares better with his next involvement, racing infield with the ball and feeding Robbie Brady on the left wing. He swaps passes and is only stopped from crossing by a fine sliding challenge.

9 mins First glimpse of the Frenchman's devastating pace. Sam Hewson spots Obertan hurtling down the left and feeds him the ball. Gabby continues to outstrip his marker, eventually winning a corner.

15 mins Neat touch and turn to pick up the loose ball in midfield, evades two challenges to feed Oliver Norwood, then is cool amid a cluster of bodies to pick out Scott Wootton in space.

19 mins Cuts infield and picks out Brandy's run with a delightful left-footed pass.

21 mins Celebrates with arms aloft as Brandy puts United ahead, before turning to applaud Hewson's assist.

22 mins Drops deep to pick up Norwood's pass, then releases Fabio, who races into the box and crosses for Hewson to score.

24 mins Exchanges several passes with Matty James, who is eventually fouled on the edge of the area.

26 mins Lurks at the back post for Fabio's deep cross, but defender Black manages to head clear and deny the opportunity.

28 mins Rises high to flick on a long ball, then continues and charges down the defender's clearance to regain possession for the Reds. Seconds later, Obertan plays a key role in a wonderful move, popping passes to Matt James and Norwood, but the latter can only fire straight at the keeper.

30 mins Floats a dangerous corner into the centre of the box, but narrowly over the onrushing Oliver Gill.

31 mins A delightful pass with his standing foot, which totally wrong-foots the defender, to feed Fabio. Think Thierry Henry's famous pass against Wigan, and it's that level of style and impudence.

38 mins Great leap to head the ball on for Brandy. Once he's tackled, Obertan shows more trickery, but ultimately slips before putting his cross in.

40 mins More neat trickery and a one-two with Brandy, before being outmuscled by the imposing Ferenc Fodor.

45+1 mins Another towering flick on, for Brandy, this time after drifting into a central position.

Half-time No interval brew for the Frenchman, or Rafael for that matter. The two returning youngsters are put through a half-time stretching routine, prior to being subsituted at the break. Shortly before the second period starts, Obertan obliges several fans with autographs and friendly chats.

Gabriel Obertan is set to play for the Reds reserves against Clyde this Sunday as he nears a first-team debut.
The French forward impressed United coaches when he saw 45 minutes of action in the Manchester Senior Cup against Oldham on Monday night.

The 20-year-old is in the United team Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is taking north to face Clyde in a game designed to raise vital funds for the cash-strapped Scottish Second Division basement boys.

Broadwood director Frank Dunne said: "He has been on the phone to tell us Obertan and Rafael Da Silva will be in the squad."

Obertan is being pencilled in for a first-team bow against Barnsley in the Carling Cup on October 28.
