After an impressive campaign in which he scored 17 goals in 34 appearances for United, Greenwood received his first senior England callup for the Nations League games against Iceland and Denmark.

Rooney feels that Greenwood is the 'best finisher' at United despite being just 18, and compared his progress to the impact that Michael Owen made when he was younger.

Rooney, the all-time top goalscorer for England and United, wrote in his column for The Times: 'Greenwood made 40 appearances in Europe and the Premier League in 2019-20, compared with Foden's 28, and he is a natural scorer, good with both feet, a taker of chances, calm in front of goal.

Rooney added that he feels Greenwood is a superior option to the likes of Marcus Rahsford and Tammy Abraham.

He said: 'As I've said before, I wasn't a natural scorer.

'That knack is rare and Gareth needs a proper deputy for Kane, someone he can slot in if Harry is injured or suspended.

'For me, Marcus Rashford is not such a natural scorer and nor is Tammy Abraham. But Greenwood can be that player.'

Greenwood has featured for England at various youth levels, working his way up from the Under-15s to the Under-21s.

In addition to Kane, Rashford and Abraham, Danny Ings, who scored 25 goals for Southampton last season, is also in the latest England squad, so competition for places is fierce.

If Greenwood gets an opportunity to impress for England during the upcoming fixtures then he could help to persuade Gareth Southgate to persist with him ahead of Euro 2020 next summer.

The youngster will also hope to have another productive campaign with United as he looks to build upon the progress that he made last season.

Menurut Kane, Greenwood diberkati kaki kemampuan kaki kiri, kaki kanan maupun sundulan sama baiknya. Produk asli MU ini bisa menjadi penyerang masa depan untuk timnas Inggris.

"Mason sangat hebat sejak sesi latihan pertama kami. Kamu dapat menilai bahwa dia adalah pemain yang sangat percaya diri. Dia berani menembak dan tidak takut melewati lawan. Itu hal yang kami inginkan," ujar Kane dikutip dari Fourfourtwo.

The FA are currently investigating the pair after they sneaked in two Icelandic girls, one a beauty queen, into their team hotel, breaking both Icelandic law and the FA's social distancing guidelines with people outside their bubble.

Ahead of the new season, Greenwood had been awarded the No 11 jersey at Manchester united but has since been reprimanded by his club for his actions on international duty.

A statement from the Red Devils said: 'Manchester United are liaising with the Football Association and are disappointed with the actions of Mason Greenwood over this situation.'

The United youngster has remained silent following the removal of his Twitter presence, whilst Phil Foden has responded to the incident earlier on Monday.

Writing via Twitter on Monday evening, Foden said: 'Following the story which has emerged today regarding my actions in Iceland, I want to make a full apology.

Manchester United and Manchester City have expressed their disappointment in Mason Greenwood and Phil Foden after the pair broke strict quarantine rules with England by inviting girls back to their hotel in Iceland.

Both players made their senior debuts for the Three Lions in the 1-0 Nations League win on Saturday, but have now been sent home by manager Gareth Southgate after images - published by Icelandic outlet DV - appeared to show Foden and Greenwood disregard strict COVID-19 protocols on Sunday.

The pair's conduct in bringing girls back also broke the FA's behavioural rules for players whilst on international duty.

In a statement, Manchester United said they were left 'extremely disappointed' by the behaviour of Mason Greenwood, who has enjoyed a breakthrough campaign with the Red Devils and had been rewarded with his first call-up.

Sportsmail understands United will wait for the facts to be established before deciding whether to take any disciplinary action against the 18-year-old.

The club believe that there will be no need for Greenwood to quarantine given there are no current travel restrictions with Iceland. They are, however, expected to make a decision over his return to training in due course.

A United spokesman said: 'Manchester United are liaising with the Football Association and are disappointed with the actions of Mason Greenwood over this situation.'

Manchester City issued a separate statement, calling Phil Foden's conduct 'totally inappropriate' and said it fell well short of what was expected at the club.

'Manchester City FC are aware of the story which has emerged today from the England national team camp in relation to the behaviour of Phil Foden,' it read.


United feel Greenwood will not have to quarantine as there are no restrictions in Iceland. Manchester City released a separate statement called Phil Foden's action's 'inappropriate'. England boss Gareth Southgate said the pair had been 'naive' but knew they had crossed a line

'We have also seen the comments from England manager Gareth Southgate. It is clear that Phil’s actions were totally inappropriate.

'His behaviour not only directly contravenes strict guidelines related to Covid-19, but also falls well below the standard expected of a Manchester City player and England international.

'The club supports the FA regarding this incident, and officials from the club are now in touch in relation to Phil’s enforced early return to the UK.

'We have no further comment to make on this matter.'

Foden has a two-year-old son and a long-term girlfriend, while United star Greenwood broke up with his model girlfriend back in May.

Speaking at Monday's press conference, England boss Gareth Southgate condemned the pairs' actions, saying they had been 'naive' but that they both understand they crossed the line.

'Obviously they have been naive, we have dealt with it appropriately. I recognise their age but the whole world is dealing with this pandemic.

'These are two boys I don't know particularly well at the moment so can't speak in great depth. I have got to try and speak with them later in the appropriate way. They have got responsibilities and they have apologised.

'The two boys are going to find themselves in a position where there will be lots of judgement of them from afar. They understand they have got this wrong. Our job is to get on with the game.'

Footage had emerged on social media of the women in question arranging a meet-up with the young England stars.

At the other end of the line, Foden could be heard responding: 'What you coming to the hotel for?', before Greenwood appears to say to his team-mate in the background: 'What do you think?'

One of the girls has apologised for her part in the incident, saying she felt 'really, really, really bad'.

Model Nadia Sif Lindal Gunnarsdottir, 20, told MailOnline: 'I feel really sorry for them and I never wanted to put them in that position. But we didn't know any better and we didn't know that they were quarantining, or else we wouldn't have gone to meet them.

'We didn't even know who Phil was. I asked Phil who he was. I'm not that much into football. I don't watch football at all.

'We didn't even know that Mason played for Man United.'

She added: 'We haven't spoken to them since. We don't want to interrupt them because they are of course going through a lot right now. They haven't contacted us.

'It was a good night that we had, of course. We were all the four of us spending time together and getting to know each other. They were really nice guys.'
