Rafa Benitez was informed of his Newcastle exit by a FRIEND while at his Wirral home as club did not contact him before releasing statement

* Rafa Benitez will officially leave his post as Newcastle manager on Sunday
* The Spaniard failed to agree a new contract with the club's owner Mike Ashley
* Ashley made his decision following a heated email exchange between the pair
* Benitez had not been expecting Ashley to issue a statement on Monday

Rafa Benitez did not know Newcastle United had announced his departure on Monday after Mike Ashley reacted to an email in which the manager said he could see no way forward.

Sportsmail understands Benitez's last correspondence with the club had been an email in which he had outlined his frustration with negotiations over a contract extension. The Spaniard wanted the promise of more investment, greater control and an improvement on his £6million-per-year salary.

However, he was not expecting Ashley to issue a statement confirming their parting at lunchtime on Monday and he was only informed by a friend while at home on the Wirral.

Sources close to the 59-year-old say he is 'angry, upset and disappointed' by an outcome that will see him leave a club where he was worshipped by supporters, many of whom are now threatening to boycott St James' Park.

Benitez's deal expires on Sunday and he had thought the club could yet return with a last-minute offer to persuade him to stay, even if he had given up hope on that being enough.

Club sources say Benitez was not answering his phone last week and Ashley has now issued the instruction to begin the search for a new manager immediately. Managing director Lee Charnley has been tasked with delivering the new man within the next fortnight.

Rafa Benitez was unaware that Newcastle United had announced his departure on Monday. The Spaniard was not expecting Ashley to issue a statement confirming their parting. Benitez will bring to a close his tenure on Tyneside after failing to agree a contract extension

Benitez, meanwhile, has the offer of a £12million salary from Chinese club Dalian Yifang, but sources say he will explore all options. There is caution that a move to China could diminish his reputation among Europe's top clubs.

We understand he would be open to discussions with Chelsea were their pursuit of Frank Lampard to fail. Benitez won the Europa League during an interim period with the Blues in 2013 and has a good relationship with owner Roman Abramovich.

As for Newcastle, they were only drawing up a shortlist on Monday night and it is likely that Neil Redfearn will take first-team training when the squad returns on July 4, even though he was only appointed Under-23s boss last week.

Jose Mourinho is the market leader but he is unlikely to work within the financial parameters which Benitez refused to, while Arsene Wenger was being mentioned as an ambitious target by some close to the club on Monday night.

Of managers currently in employment, Burnley's Sean Dyche has been mooted by those same sources given his resilience and personality to take on what will be a difficult job in the wake of the popular Benitez.

Meanwhile, a proposed takeover of the club by the Dubai-based Bin Zayed Group has shown no signs of progress and prospective candidates will be told not to consider that as a distraction for the time being.

Steve Bruce 'was the 11th choice' for Newcastle job and not even on their original shortlist... and now Wednesday are threatening legal action after he walked out on them

* Newcastle have confirmed the appointment as Steve Bruce as manager
* Bruce joins the club on a three-year deal after leaving Sheffield Wednesday
* On joining, he said he was 'delighted and incredibly proud to be appointed'
* He has become the 10th manager of Mike Ashley's controversial reign
* It has been reported that Bruce wasn't even on Newcastle's original shortlist
* Newcastle's announcement of the news was the first Wednesday had heard of it
* In a statement on Wednesday, the Owls said there were still legal issues to sort

Newcastle have confirmed the appointment of Steve Bruce as their new manager on a three-year deal.

Bruce joins Newcastle after quitting from his job as boss of Championship club Sheffield Wednesday on Monday.

The 58-year-old was given the job despite being 11th choice and not even on Newcastle's original shortlist, according to Sky Sports.

Bruce glossed over that in his first interview with the club. He told the club website: 'I'm delighted and incredibly proud to be appointed as head coach of Newcastle United. This is my boyhood club and it was my dad's club, so this is a very special moment for me and my family.

'There is a huge challenge ahead of us, but it's one that my staff and I are ready for. We'll roll our sleeves up and we'll be giving it everything from the off to ensure supporters have a successful team that they can be proud of.'

Bruce's long-term assistants, Steve Agnew and Stephen Clemence, have followed him to St James' Park after they also left Hillsborough.

Newcastle's announcement of the news was also the first Wednesday had heard of the appointment and stated that there were still legal issues to sort out.

Newcastle have confirmed the appointment as Steve Bruce as the club's new manager. Bruce, 58, quit from his job as manager of Sheffield Wednesday on Monday afternoon

In a statement, Wednesday said: 'The club is disappointed to learn via public statement issued by Newcastle United that it has appointed former Sheffield Wednesday staff Steve Bruce, Steve Agnew and Steve Clemence.

'Regardless of the fact that the staff resigned from their positions with the club on Monday, there remains outstanding legal issues to be resolved between the club and the staff and Newcastle United. The club is currently considering its position and taking the appropriate legal advice.

'No further comment will be made by the club concerning this matter.'

Newcastle confirmed in a statement on Wednesday that Bruce and his staff were expected to meet the squad after the Premier League Asia Trophy match against Wolves in Nanjing.

Bruce's arrival is unlikely to appease fans who were left angry by the departure of former manager Rafa Benitez.

Benitez walked after three years when the club failed to agree a contract extension with the 59-year-old Spaniard, who has since taken over at Chinese club Dalian Yifang.

However, managing director Lee Charnley said he was delighted to have got his man after lengthy negotiations with the Owls over a compensation package.

Charnley said: 'Steve has a deep affection for Newcastle and we are very pleased a coach with his vast experience and connections to the club and city has joined us.

'Steve knows what this club means to supporters and to the region and he will put his heart and soul into leading our talented group of players with the full support of our staff.

'The hard work for Steve and his team starts immediately and we will be fully prepared for the challenge of a new Premier League season.'

Bruce becomes the 10th manager of Newcastle owner Mike Ashley's controversial reign and supporters reacted angrily to his appointment on Wednesday.

One supporter on Twitter said he and his son would no longer be renewing their season tickets. Other tweeted their surprise at the news and what they thought it meant for the future of their club.

Allan Simm wrote: 'I can announce that me and my son won't be renewing our season tickets. Enjoy trying to avoid relegation, don't care whether or not you succeed, it's not success, you're no longer a football club.'

Another added: 'Three year deal? Really? Ashley staying for a while yet then, unsurprisingly.' 'God almighty. It's actually happened,' added one more.

According to the latest odds with Ladbrokes, Bruce jumped straight to first place in the Premier League sack race.

He is 5/2 to be sacked ahead of any other manager starting the new season.

Behind him are Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (4/1), Roy Hodgson (10-1), Manuel Pellegrini (10-1), Daniel Farke (14/1) and Frank Lampard (14-1).

Korban pertama musim ini

Watford Pecat Pelatih
Okdwitya Karina Sari - detikSport

The sack race: Everton boss Marco Silva is red-hot favourite to be the first Premier League manager for the chop… but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Mauricio Pochettino are the big names under threat

* The pressure has piled on Marco Silva after a disappointing start to the season
* Everton have already lost to Bournemouth, Sheffield United and Aston Villa
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Mauricio Pochettino are also down in the dumps

Marco Silva has endured a very tough start to the new Premier League season, coming under intense pressure already after just six matches.

Everton currently sit 14th in the table with just seven points, falling to three hugely disappointing defeats against Bournemouth and two newly-promoted teams in Aston Villa and Sheffield United.

The pressure has been piled on Silva and it comes as no surprise that with various bookmakers, the Portuguese manager is favourite to be sacked.

The pressure has piled up on Everton boss Marco Silva after a tough start to the season

With Sky Bet, 42-year-old Silva is valued at 13/8 to get the chop while Ladbrokes have him at just 5/4 and William Hill at 6/4.

But it has also been far from plain sailing for a host of other top-flight managers, most specifically those at Tottenham and Manchester United, with scalps being taken almost every weekend.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is the second favourite to be sacked first, coming in at 5/1 with Sky Bet, while both Ladbrokes and William Hill have him priced at 6/1.

After failing to secure Champions League football at the end of last season, Solskjaer has endured a tough start this term, with his latest setback coming against West Ham at the London Stadium on the weekend.

The Red Devils have claimed just eight points so far from their opening six fixtures, and the pressure intensified on Wednesday after they scraped through on penalties against League One side Rochdale in the Carabao Cup.

Quote:
TOP 10 TO BE SACKED

Courtesy of Oddschecker

1) Marco Silva 7/4

2) Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 6/1

3) Mauricio Pochettino 12/1

4) Nuno Espirito Santo 14/1

5) Quique Sanchez Flores 14/1

6) Steve Bruce 16/1

7) Ralph Hasenhuttl 20/1

8) Roy Hodgson 20/1

9) Dean Smith 20/1

10) Graham Potter 25/1

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has endured a tough time with Manchester United in the Premier League

It's a similiar story down in north London for Tottenham and Mauricio Pochettino, who are enduring a worrying slump, which culminated in a shock defeat by League Two outfit Colchester in the Carabao Cup.

Tottenham have the same amounts of points as United, already sitting 11 adrift of pace-setters Liverpool.

And Pochettino, who has grown increasingly frustrated at Tottenham, is the third favourite to get the sack - being priced at 9/1 with Sky Bet and 8/1 with William Hill. However, Ladbrokes have him at just 5/1.

While it has been a tough ride for some so far, other Premier League managers couldn't be sitting any more comfortable.

And it comes as no surprise that Jurgen Klopp, who has guided his Liverpool side five points clear at the top of the table, and Pep Guardiola, are the least likely to get the chop.

Klopp and Guardiola, who will once again battle for the title with Liverpool and Manchester City respectively, come in at 100/1.

Jose Mourinho emerges as bookies' favourite to replace Unai Emery at Arsenal after odds on 'Special One' are slashed from 16/1 to 4/1

* A flurry of bets have been placed on Jose Mourinho to be Arsenal's next boss
* Unai Emery is under pressure after overseeing a poor start to the season
* Mourinho has been out of work since leaving Man United in December 2018

Jose Mourinho has emerged as a leading contender to be Arsenal's next manager after odds on his appointment were slashed on Wednesday.

A flurry of bets were placed on the 56-year-old to take charge at the Emirates and saw his odds tumble from 16/1 to just 4/1, according to SportNation.bet.

Mourinho and Massimilano Allegri are now the joint favourites to replace Unai Emery after the Gunners drew 2-2 with Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Jose Mourinho has emerged as a leading contender to replace Unai Emery as Arsenal boss

Mikel Arteta (3/1), Patrick Vieira (6/1), Erik ten Hag (8/1) and Brendan Rodgers (10/1) are the other leading candidates to replace Emery in the betting market.

Mourinho has been out of work since being sacked by Manchester United in December 2018 but has admitted he is keen to return to management.

Since his Old Trafford exit, the Portuguese has worked as a pundit for Sky Sports and been linked with a string of high-profile jobs, including a return to Real Madrid.

The 'Special One' previously had a strained relationship with former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, who was replaced by Emery in May 2018.

Mourinho labelled Wenger a 'specialist in failure' following the Frenchman's unsuccessful attempts to win a Premier League trophy in the 14 years prior to his departure.

Tottenham SACK Mauricio Pochettino with club struggling down in 14th place just five months after Champions League final defeat as chairman Daniel Levy cites 'extremely disappointing results'

* Tottenham have axed Mauricio Pochettino after three league wins this season
* The Argentine had been under intense pressure with the team 14th in the league
* Sportsmail reported on Monday that it was a matter of time before he departed
* Julian Nagelsmann, Eddie Howe and Jose Mourinho are linked to the vacancy

Tottenham have sacked Mauricio Pochettino after a poor start to the season left the club struggling in mid-table.

The Argentine, who was at Spurs for five-and-a-half years, had been under intense scrutiny with the team languishing in 14th place in the Premier League with just three league wins all season, a huge fall from grace after he led the side to the Champions League final in the summer.

Sportsmail had reported on Monday night that it was a matter of when, not if Pochettino would leave and that the club's hierarchy had been planning an exit strategy ahead of this weekend's game with West Ham.

Mauricio Pochettino has been relieved of his duties at Spurs with the club 14th in the league. There had been speculation that the Argentine had been distant and looking for a way out

One insider had said that it would be 'impossible' for him to see out the season in north London, with key figures reportedly losing faith in his ability to turn things around.

There had been reports the West Ham game would crucial in determining his future, but the club have now decided to act in an attempt to arrest the team's slump down the table.

Assistant manager Jesus Perez and coaches Miguel d'Agostino and Toni Jimenez have also departed.

'The Club can today announce that Mauricio Pochettino and his coaching staff Jesus Perez, Miguel D'Agostino and Antoni Jimenez have been relieved of their duties,' it said in a statement.

Chairman, Daniel Levy, said: 'We were extremely reluctant to make this change and it is not a decision the Board has taken lightly, nor in haste.

'Regrettably domestic results at the end of last season and beginning of this season have been extremely disappointing.

'It falls to the Board to make the difficult decisions - this one made more so given the many memorable moments we have had with Mauricio and his coaching staff - but we do so in the Club's best interests.

POCHETTINO'S EXIT: HOW SPORTSMAIL BROKE THE STORY

On Monday night, Sportsmail duo Sami Mokbel and Adrian Kajumba exclusively revealed that the end was near for Mauricio Pochettino - CLICK HERE to read the article in full.

Spurs visit West Ham on Saturday but there was already a backdrop of uncertainty over the Argentine's future, with sources claiming private discussions over an exit strategy had taken place. These were confirmed on Tuesday evening when he was sacked.

Tottenham sit 14th in the Premier League - 20 points adrift of leaders Liverpool - although they remain on course to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League.
'Mauricio and his coaching staff will always be part of our history. I have the utmost admiration for the manner in which he dealt with the difficult times away from a home ground whilst we built the new stadium and for the warmth and positivity he brought to us.

'I should like to thank him and his coaching staff for all they have contributed. They will always be welcome here.

'We have a talented squad. We need to re-energise and look to deliver a positive season for our supporters. We shall provide an update on new coaching staff in due course.'

Jose Mourinho had been linked with the Tottenham job before Pochettino's departure

Young Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann is another name that has been linked with the post

Speculation will be heating up regarding the Argentine's successor - Leipzig's Julian Nagelsmann, Napoli's Carlo Ancelotti, Bournemouth's Eddie Howe and Jose Mourinho have all been heavily linked.

Pochettino, had three years left to run on his £8.5m contract and will be entitled to a significant severance package now that the club have decided to terminate his contract.

He had plunged his future into doubt after revealing that he is tempted to return to Spain, where he began his managerial career with Espanol.

'Yes, look, although you never know,' he said when asked if would return.

'We are Latin, I like this city, La Liga and I love this club. I am enjoying England very much but I don't know when or where, but I would love to return to Spain.'

Some of the biggest figures in football have been responding to the news of Pochettino's dismissal, with former Spurs players Jermaine Jenas and Gary Lineker both disagreeing with the club's decision.

Former midfielder Jenas said Spurs should have 'backed him not sacked him', admitting he was 'gutted' for the manager, while Match of the Day host Lineker, who led the line for Tottenham between 1989 and 1992, said any appointment the club made would not be an improvement over Pochettino.

The 47-year-old joined Spurs in the summer of 2014, replacing Tim Sherwood as the club looked to return to the Champions League.

Spurs have looked a shadow of their former selves and have picked up 14 points in 12 games

He led Tottenham to fifth in his first season, before delivering on Daniel Levy's European vision by overseeing four successive top-four finishes.

The Lilywhites were also involved in two title races under Pochettino's leadership, running Leicester City close in 2015/16 before suffering heartbreak as Chelsea clawed two goals back in a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge.

And it was Chelsea who pipped Spurs to the title the following season, with Antonio Conte's side running away with the crown, although the north Londoners registered their highest points total of 86.

The undoubted highlight of Pochettino's time at Spurs was leading the club to a Champions's League final after a stunning stoppage time win over Ajax in the semi-finals. But an elusive first piece of silverware stayed out of his grasp after Liverpool's 2-0 win at Madrid.

Marco Silva facing Everton exit as he moves odds-on with bookies to be next Premier League manager sacked… and David Moyes is the red-hot favourite to make shock return

* Marco Silva is the favourite with the bookies to be the next top-flight boss axed
* Silva's job in hanging by a thread after Everton's latest dismal loss to Norwich
* Former Everton manager David Moyes leads the race to replace him
* Moyes is ahead of Eddie Howe and Mark Hughes in the running for the job

Marco Silva has emerged as the overwhelming favourite to be the next Premier League manager to be sacked after his Everton side suffered a 2-0 defeat at home to Norwich on Saturday - with former Toffees boss David Moyes in the frame for a shock return.

With Everton 15th in the table and on a run of just one win in four games, Silva's position is increasingly tenuous.

Moyes, who has been out of work since leaving West Ham in June 2018, spent 11 years at the club and leads the betting to make a sensational return.

Everton manager Marco Silva is the favourite to be next Premier League boss sacked

Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe is the second favourite at 11/2, while Everton's Under-23s boss David Unsworth is third at 6/1.

Unsworth has previously led the first team on a caretaker basis, firstly in May 2016 after the sacking of Roberto Martinez, then in October 2017 when Ronald Koeman departed.

Moyes first joined the Toffees in March 2002, replacing Walter Smith, and stayed for more than a decade.

In that time he enjoyed a highest finish of fourth, in 2005, while he also reached the FA Cup final in 2009, but failed to win a trophy at the club.

Chris Wilder - 16/1

Erik ten Hag - 20/1

Marcelino - 20/1

Louis van Gaal - 20/1

Odds by Betfair

David Moyes could be set to return to the Toffees, more than six years after leaving the club

He left in May 2013 to take the reins at Manchester United following the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson.

Silva is currently leading the market to be sacked at 4/9, ahead of Arsenal's Unai Emery at 17/10 and the 9/1 on offer for Manuel Pellegrini to get the boot from West Ham.

Under the Portuguese boss, Everton have struggled this season with just four wins from 13 games and just one victory away from home all campaign.

That has left the Toffees hierarchy on the verge of making a dramatic change at the top.

Nuno Espirito Santo becomes bookies' favourite to replace under-fire Arsenal manager Unai Emery as Wolves boss moves ahead of Massimiliano Allegri, Mikel Arteta and Mauricio Pochettino

* Wolves are currently sit fifth in the Premier League, despite a poor start this term
* Arsenal manager Unai Emery is under increasing pressure to keep his job
* Arsenal sit eighth on 18 points in the Premier League - 10 points off the top four

Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo has emerged as the leading candidate to replace under-pressure Arsenal manager Unai Emery, according to the bookmakers.

Espirito Santo leads the way among several bookies - with the 45-year-old as low as 7/4 on Sky Bet as of Tuesday afternoon.

Elsewhere, he is 3/1 (on Betfair and Paddy Power) and 9/4 (on Ladbrokes and Coral).

Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo is the bookmakers favourite to succeed Unai Emery

As of Tuesday afternoon, the 45-year-old was as low as 7/4 to become the new Arsenal boss

The shift in the bookmakers has seen the Portuguese overtake former Arsenal captain Mikel Arteta in their standings as well as out-of-work figures Massimiliano Allegri and Mauricio Pochettino.

Despite a woeful start to the Premier League, Wolves have regained the form of last season and now currently sit fifth in the table as they juggle domestic commitments alongside their Europa League campaign.

In contrast, Arsenal are sliding the table as results and performances under Emery continue to stutter.

Following their last-gasp draw at home to lowly Southampton on Saturday, the Gunners now sit eighth on 18 points - eight behind fourth-place Chelsea.

Quique Sanchez Flores sacked AGAIN by Watford following defeat against Southampton... just 85 days after taking charge of club for a second time

* Quique Sanchez Flores returned to Watford for a second spell just 85 days ago
* Following one win in 10 games, he has been sacked again by the Hornets
* Defeat against Southampton on Saturday night left Watford bottom of the table
* Sanchez Flores said goodbye to his players at the training ground on Sunday
* Chris Hughton is a strong contender to take over the top job at Vicarage Road

Watford have wielded the axe on their second manager of the season, sacking Quique Sanchez Flores just 85 days after his return to the struggling club.

The Hornets dropped to the bottom of the Premier League table on Saturday night following their defeat at basement boys Southampton, and that has proved to be the final straw for the club's hierarchy.

Sanchez Flores only returned to the club for a second spell in charge on September 7, and has overseen one win from 10 games.

The Spaniard leaves the club six points adrift of safety, and was told of his sacking at a meeting at the club's training ground on Sunday.

In a statement posted to the club's website shortly before 1pm, Watford chairman & CEO Scott Duxbury said: 'Quique is a man of great integrity and it was clear how much he wanted to have a positive impact, but ultimately results have dictated our decision'

'The appointment of a new Head Coach is imminent, and with nearly two-thirds of the season remaining, we will provide all the support necessary to make the coming months successful.'

Sanchez Flores was afforded the chance to say goodbye to his players, who were also at the training ground for their usual Sunday session.

The dressing room has soured towards Sanchez Flores in recent weeks, with some players unhappy at certain tactical decisions.

He opted to bring on Andre Gray instead of Troy Deeney in defeat against Saints despite the team feeling a hold-up player was needed.

WATFORD'S FORM

OCT 5 - 0-0 Sheffield United (H)

OCT 19 - 1-1 Tottenham (A)

OCT 26 - 0-0 v Bournemouth (H)

Nov 2 - 1-2 Chelsea (H)

Nov 8 - 0-2 Norwich (A)

Nov 23 - 0-3 Burnley (H)

Nov 30 - 2-1 Southampton (A)
Former Brighton boss Chris Hughton is a strong contender to take over the top job at Vicarage Road, and has plenty of admirers at the club.

Sanchez Flores previously led Watford between June 2015 and May 2016 before the club decided to dispense with his services.

He was then returned to the manager's office when previous boss Javi Gracia paid the price for a poor start to the season.

Watford took a first-half lead through Ismaila Sarr at St Mary's on Saturday night, but Danny Ings and James Ward-Prowse secured a vital three points for relegation rivals Southampton.

After the match, Sanchez Flores said: 'I'm not sure. I am completely apart (from) these kind of decisions,' replied Flores when asked about his future.

'I am just sad because if I can't help the team, I am sad for that, I am sad for the fans, I am sad for the players, for the owner and the future of the club, of course.'

Speaking about his players, he added: 'They lost confidence. You think the game goes in the right way and finally one situation changes everything.

'One goal (conceded) for us now is a tragedy, even if we are controlling the match. It's a tragedy.'

THE SACK RACE: And then there were two! After Quique Sanchez Flores became the latest manager to lose his job… will Marco Silva or Ole Gunnar Solskjaer be next for the chop?

* The Premier League has witnessed a sudden spate of managerial departures
* Manchester United have endured their worst start to a season in 31 years
* Everton sit just two points off the relegation places after one win in five matches
* Both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Marco Silva are under pressure in their roles

It's axing season in the Premier League and after a raft of high-profile departures, both Marco Silva and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be glancing nervously over their shoulders.

Quique Sanchez Flores was the latest to be shown the door by his employers, after his second stint as Watford boss ended after just 85 days with just one league win to show for his troubles.

His departure follows those of Mauricio Pochettino at Tottenham and Unai Emery at Arsenal, the only three top-flight casualties of the season to date.

Marco Silva is in real danger of the sack, with his Everton side struggling at the wrong end. Everton sit just two points above the drop zone having won just once in their last five matches

That is almost certain to change, and there are two managers in the North West who will be feeling the heat more than others.

On Merseyside, it was almost a surprise that Everton's defeat by Leicester did not bring with it a P45 for Silva.

The Toffees have endured a miserable season and sit just one place and two points above the relegation zone.

Huge amounts of money were spent at Goodison Park in the summer in a bid to propel the club back into European contention, with Alex Iwobi, Moise Kean, Andre Gomes and Jean-Philippe Gbamin all bought for north of £20million.

That substantial investment has not produced results on the field however, and only Norwich (9) have lost more times in the Premier League this season than Silva's men.

He has already been struck with the dreaded vote of confidence from owner Farhad Moshiri.

That came before the defeat by Brendan Rodgers' men on Sunday, when Kelechi Iheanacho's winner in the sixth minute of stoppage time sealed all three points for the hosts.

It was a battling performance from Everton in defeat, and the display may have been enough to earn the Portuguese boss a stay of execution. But it appears to be a case of when and not if Moshiri decided to pull the trigger.

Down the road in Manchester, Solskjaer may be feeling similarly precarious in his own role.

Quote:
NEXT MANAGER TO LEAVE POST - ODDS

Marco Silva — 2/5

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer — 4/1

Manuel Pellegrini — 10/1

Nuno Espirito Santo — 11/1

Ralph Hasenhuttl — 12/1

Manchester United have had the worst start to a season in 31 years under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Once again, Manchester United dropped points from a winning position on Sunday afternoon

Sat ninth in the table, with just 18 points from their first 14 fixtures, the Norweigian has overseen United's worst start to a season in 31 years.

They have the aura of a mid-table side - a far-cry from the perennial champions Solskjaer was associated with back in his playing days - and his attempts to turn the ship around have been constantly thwarted by false dawns.

A revival after a disappointing 1-0 defeat by Newcastle at St James' Park looked to have steadied his position after executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward had decided to publicly back the man in the Old Trafford hotseat.

However, a recent slump has shone the spotlight on the 46-year-old once again.

Losing to Kazakhstan champions Astana, even with a squad of kids, was not the greatest look for one of the world's most renowned clubs, but it will have been the two recent Premier League games that will have worried the powers that be.

Twice United have surrendered points from winning positions in recent games, throwing away a 3-2 lead against Sheffield United, before being pegged back by Aston Villa in the second half during Sunday's clash.

With the likes of Mauricio Pochettino available for work, the need for Solskjaer to get back to winning ways is pressing.
