U18s: United 2 Sunderland 0

Premier Academy League
Carrington, Sat 27 March 2010

MANCHESTER UNITED 2
Ajose 82, 88 (pen)

SUNDERLAND 0

Nicky Ajose scored twice in the last eight minutes at Carrington as United overcame a difficult test against Sunderland.

In a wind-affected game of few chances, the strong visitors looked the more likely victors based on possession but they were punished in the latter stages as Paul McGuinness' boys claimed maximum points for the first time in four games.

Cameron Stewart and Jesse Lingard carried the main threat to Sunderland in the first half, although the pair arguably got in each other's way when, at the end of a jinking run by the former, the latter lifted a shot above the bar from the edge of the area. Stewart went closer to breaking the deadlock when his best effort was deflected high and wide.

The same duo would eventually combine to create United's 82nd-minute opener. Stewart rolled a pass into the box from the left flank, Lingard collected and looked up to find Ajose who rifled in a first-time shot.

Ajose's second came two minutes from time when he picked himself up from a foul inside the area and slotted home from the penalty spot.

United: Devlin; Moffatt, Fornasier, Thorpe, Fryers; Brown, Wootton, Cole, Ajose; Stewart, Lingard. Subs: Jacob, Barmby, Blackett, Keane.

Reds remake the Italian Job as Cofie clinches the Claudio Sassi

Posted by nickogs20 on April 6, 2010

Quote:
A solitary second-half goal handing United a 1-0 win in the final of the Torneo di Calcio Memorial Claudio Sassi… hmm, where have we heard that before? Ok, Bologna were the opposition this time around and it was John Cofie rather than Ryan Tunnicliffe with the decisive strike, but there was a definite sense of deja vu in Maranello yesterday as the Reds retained the Memorial Sassi.

Bologna proved stubborn opponents in the final, the game being played mostly in the half of the rossoblù but genuine chances proving hard to come by for the reigning champions. Indeed, the best opportunity of the first half probably fell to Bologna, with striker Polini firing over when well placed. The vital breakthrough did eventually come for United fifteen minutes into the second-half however, Cofie rising highest to head home Paul Pogba’s right-wing cross. Conor Devlin was called upon to make a vital late intervention, but the Reds held on to win the final and the 20th Memorial Sassi tournament, a deserved second consecutive triumph in the peninsula for Paul McGuinness’ side.

The Reds got their title defence off to a slow start, slipping to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Danish side OB Odense in their opening match on Friday evening, but soon got things back on track with resounding wins over co-host side Modena and local amateur side Virtus Castelfranco by four and five goals to nil respectively, securing second place in their group behind the unbeaten Danes. The other co-hosts U.S. Sassuolo were United’s semi-final opponents on Sunday evening, and just as they had in last year’s group stage, the Reds ran out 2-1 winners, securing their place in the final against the Odense-conquering Bologna.

McGuinness fielded a starting XI of Devlin, Reece Brown, Joe Dudgeon, Tom Thorpe, Scott Wootton, Pogba, Etzaz Hussain, Oliver Norwood, Cameron Stewart, Will Keane and Cofie in the final, six of whom ultimately picked up their second Memorial Sassi winners’ medals. One of those, Wootton, received the trophy from a presentation party that included the Italian international forward Luca Toni, and United added more silverware to the Old Trafford trophy cabinet, following up their defence of the Northern Ireland Milk Cup last July.

Unfortunately the official tournament site has been a little scarce with details on lineups and scorers for the Reds’ other games. We’ll try to fill in some of those gaps over the next few days, but keep an eye out for an MUTV review of the tournament at some point over the next couple of weeks, which should help to put some flesh on the bones for stats fans.

U18s: United 1 Wolves 0 – Cofie sends Reds clear at the top

Early goals seem to have been the order of the day for United at all levels this past week and the U18s weren’t to be left out, John Cofie’s 2nd minute strike ultimately proving decisive as the Reds beat Wolverhampton Wanderers at Carrington.

When Cofie raced clear and coolly slotted the ball past Wolves keeper Aaron McCarey with just 64 seconds on the clock it looked like an exciting and potentially goal-laden game may be in store, but that never quite materialised. A weary-looking United, coming off five games in Italy at the Memorial Sassi tournament last week, struggled to find any sort of rhythm going forward, while a fresher Wolves outfit arguably shaded possession and territory but were frustrated by a resilient Reds rearguard. Much to the visitors’ chagrin, Paul McGuinness’ side held on to record a hard-earned 1-0 win and seize top spot in Academy League Group C.

United's Under-18s went top of Premier Academy League Group C with a 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.

Top spot in the North west regional division has changed hands on numerous occasions in the last two months, but Reds striker John Cofie's second-minute goal was enough to defeat Wolves and reclaim pole position. Cofie got United off to a flying start when he ran through on goal before beating Wolves goalkeeper Aaron McCarey after just 64 seconds.

The Reds were just back from the recent triumph in Italy in the the Torneo Calcio Memorial Claudio Sassi-Sassuolo in Italy. Such a rapid start suggested confidence was high, but perhaps that tournament had taken just as much out of the legs as it had bouyed belief.

Wolves had plenty of possession but McGuinness' charges held on for three valuable points. With five games remaining, the Reds will hope to hold onto top spot for a place in the end-of-season play-offs against the winners of the other regional divisions.

U18s: Boro 1 United 4

United's youngsters recovered from an early setback on Teeside to claim three points with a resounding 4-1 win over Middlesbrough.

The Reds trailed after just seven minutes as Cameron Park fired home a stunning strike via the inside of the post. Nick Ajose quickly hauled United level, keeping his cool to finish after finding himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

United completed a telling turnaround in quickfire spell either side of the interval. On the stroke of half-time, Tom Thorpe tapped in from close range from a corner, and five minutes after the break Ravel Morrison fired home to double the Reds' lead.

Amid trying, windy conditions, United blew the hosts away as Ajose fired in a sharp, near-post finish just five minutes later to finish the scoring.

It was plain sailing for the Reds thereon, and Paul McGuinness and his players can reflect on a job well done, as well as three more priceless points as United look to hold off the challenge of Everton and West Bromwich Albion at the top of the table.
