Default Manchester United - Loan Watch 2015/16

Crewe 1-3 Preston: Manchester United loanee Will Keane opens North End account in Capital One Cup victory

* Jordan Hugill scored a penalty for Preston after just five minutes
* Manchester United loanee Will Keane doubled their lead soon after
* Adam King gave Crewe hope with a goal on 36 minutes
* Josh Brownhill sealed victory for Preston with four minutes remaining

Will Keane opened his Preston account as North End avoided the fate of many of their Sky Bet Championship rivals by beating Crewe 3-1 to advance in the Capital One Cup.

Seven second-tier sides fell at the first hurdle on Tuesday - with Derby joining them 24 hours later - but North End progressed thanks to strikes from Jordan Hugill, Keane and Josh Brownhill.

Joe Garner, scorer of four goals the last time these two met, was kept up Simon Grayson's sleeve but his chosen starting strike-force threatened to dismantle the Alex anyway.

Will Keane opened his Preston North End account as they avoided upset in the Capital One Cup

Hugill struck the opener with a penalty after five minutes, earning the spot-kick himself having stolen in front of goalkeeper Ben Garratt, who caught the striker as he was attempting to clear.

Manchester United loanee Keane added a second eight minutes later, steadying himself to slam home when Hugill's header hit a defender and fell into his path.

Hugill should have put the tie to bed following a brilliant one-touch move involving Keane and Brownhill but the Middlesbrough-born forward fluffed his lines.

And Crewe had half-time hope as Adam King swept in a first-time left-footed effort from the edge of the area.

Brownhill drove against the outside of a post from 25 yards at the start of the second period, while at the other end Lilywhites goalkeeper Jordan Pickford scooped Marcus Haber's header off the line with his right hand.

North End pushed for a third and after Keane bent wide and Greg Cunningham's header hit the top of the crossbar, Brownhill scored an 86th-minute third when substitute Garner's headed effort dropped in his lap.

Adnan Januzaj came off the Borussia Dortmund bench with half-an-hour left and helped them win 4-2 at Hannover to continue their 100 per cent start in the Bundesliga.

Januzaj had a couple of chances and even showed a bit of trickery to the delight of the 10,000 travelling Dortmund fans.

Tyler Blackett made his debut for Celtic, playing at left-back in their 2-1 loss to Aberdeen but didn't perform to his full capability. Celtic head to Amsterdam next for a Europa League game against Ajax on Thursday night.

Will Keane struggled to impose himself as Preston North End were beaten 2-1 by Derby County in the Championship, while Ben Pearson played the full 90 as Barnsley defeated Swindon Town 4-1.

Manchester United loan watch update

Dean Henderson has extended his stay at Stockport County for another month and he celebrated with a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw at Bradford Park Avenue. The young goalkeeper made a few fine saves in the National League North clash.

Victor Valdes missed Standard Liege's 2-0 defeat against Westerlo with a hamstring injury while James Wilson sat out Brighton's 3-2 win over Bolton due to illness. Barnsley's seven-game winning run came to an end at Gillingham as Ashley Fletcher went close to finding a late equaliser in a 2-1 reverse.

Steve Bruce recently suggested he would not rush Nick Powell into action at Hull City, commenting: "We have to manage him because it would be wrong of me to just throw him in if he's not ready. Mike Phelan knows him well and, of course, I spoke with Ryan Giggs at length about him. It's fair to say that Ryan really likes him as a player."

*Manchester United loan watch update

Ashley Fletcher scored his first league goal to earn loan club Barnsley a 1-0 derby victory over Doncaster Rovers at the weekend.

The Manchester United striker, a 60th-minute substitute for the Tykes at Oakwell, pounced to grab the winner after Thorsten Stuckmann pushed out Conor Hourihane's shot.

Nick Powell enjoyed his maiden appearance for Hull City as he helped the Tigers secure a fifth-round replay with Arsenal in the Emirates FA Cup. The forward played well for Steve Bruce's men during a goalless draw in the capital.

"He takes the ball well, he's a fantastic athlete and a really good footballer," said Bruce. "I would love to make the move permanent right at this minute, if I possibly could, because he's the type of player you can build your club around."

Kieran O'Hara was on the bench for Morecambe as they lost 2-1 at Bristol Rovers while another keeper, Dean Henderson, was recalled from Stockport County ahead of Monday's FA Cup tie with Shrewsbury Town. Victor Valdes and James Wilson are both out injured.

James Wilson has helped Brighton & Hove Albion maintain a push towards promotion to the Barclays Premier League.

The Seagulls recorded successive 4-0 wins against Bristol City and Leeds United with the striker coming off the bench on both occasions. Wilson was initially credited with the fourth strike at Ashton Gate when his header deflected off Mark Little but it eventually went down as an own goal.

Nick Powell is also aiding Hull City's bid for a top-two spot in the division and he made his first Championship appearances for the Tigers as a substitute in the 1-0 win at Ipswich Town and goalless draw against Sheffield Wednesday last Friday.

In League One, Ashley Fletcher played 89 minutes of Barnsley's 2-1 victory at Crewe Alexandra and was unlucky not to score when having an effort cleared off the line by George Cooper.

"Willo had a little niggle so hopefully he's trying to force himself back in," United Reserves coach Warren Joyce told ManUtd.com. "He came on the other night and Fletch has done well when he has come off the bench.
"Maybe he's not had as many minutes at Barnsley as he would have liked, or we would want, but he's certainly affected the games."

Victor Valdes came up against former Red Alex Büttner in Standard Liege's 3-3 draw with Anderlecht. The Spanish keeper was shown a yellow card following a flare-up with Kara Mbodji.

Default Re: Manchester United - Loan Watch 2015/16

Manchester United currently have six players on loan, four of those were in action this weekend. Here is how I feel the players fared this weekend.

James Wilson – Brighton & Hove Albion
James Wilson played 13 minutes in the 4-0 win against Leeds United in the Sky Bet Championship. Wilson came on when the game was over and didn’t get a chance to score a goal or impress in the match. He has not had a lot of game time at Brighton due to injuries and under performing and I hope this makes him mature a lot more and up his game.
Next Match: Preston North End – Sky Bet Championship – Saturday 5th March 2016; KO 15:00

Nick Powell – Hull City
Nick Powell played 28 minutes in the 0-0 draw with Sheffield Wednesday in the Sky Bet Championship. Powell did not really get a sniff into a boring goalless draw. He hasn’t impressed since he joined the Tigers on loan in January and the way it’s going he will be a free agent in the summer.
Next Match: Birmingham City – Sky Bet Championship – Thursday 3rd March 2016; KO 19:45

Ashley Fletcher – Barnsley
Ashley Fletcher played 90 minutes in the 2-1 win against Crewe Alexandra in the Sky Bet League One match. Fletcher played well in the win and really stretched the Crewe defence which help his team get back onto level terms after Crewe Alexandra opened the scoring in the first half. He has shown a lot of potential since going to Barnsley on loan, which could prove vital for him next season in the U21’s or even maybe being in the first team squad.
Next Match: Coventry City – Sky Bet League One – Tuesday 1st March 2016; KO 19:45

Kieran O’Hara – Morecambe
Kieran O’Hara did not feature in the 2-1 defeat to Carlisle United in the Sky Bet League Two.
Next Match: Luton Town – Sky Bet League Two – Tuesday 1st March 2016; KO 19:45

Tyler Blackett – Celtic
Tyler Blackett did not feature in the 1-1 draw with Hamilton Academical in the Scottish Premier League.
Next Match: Dundee – Scottish Premier League – Wednesday 2nd March 2016; KO 19:45

Victor Valdes – Standard Liege
Victor Valdes played 90 minutes in the 3-3 draw with Anderlecht in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League. Valdes did not have the best of games in goal for Liege and made a couple of mistakes which led to the goals for Anderlecht. He is out of contract in the summer and is most likely going to be a free agent in the summer after a few problems which have gone on at Manchester United.
Next Match: KRC Genk – Jupiler Pro League – Saturday 5th March 2016; KO 20:00

MANCHESTER UNITED LOAN WATCH UPDATE

James Wilson scored the only goal of the game as Brighton & Hove Albion beat Reading 1-0 on Tuesday to move into the automatic promotion slots in the Championship.

The striker was recalled to the side by manager Chris Hughton and produced a superb left-foot finish in the first half. "I wanted to play James," said Hughton. "It was a question of who I played alongside him.

"James has been a bit stop-start since joining us, but he has been involved and he's getting used to the level of what the Championship is. It was a good, fast attack that led to the goal and it was James' best all-round 90 minutes for us."

Ashley Fletcher has been in good form for Barnsley and was voted Man of the Match by the club's sponsors in the 2-0 defeat to Southend United. The striker won a penalty after being fouled when rounding Shrimpers keeper Dan Bentley but Conor Hourihane missed from the spot.

Manchester United loan watch update

Manchester United goalkeepers Kieran O'Hara and Victor Valdes had weekends to remember during their loan spells away from the club.

O'Hara saved a penalty after coming on as a substitute for Morecambe in their narrow 1-0 League Two defeat against Leyton Orient. Writing in the Lancashire club's local newspaper The Visitor, Adam Lord commented: "Kieran O'Hara may only be 19 and in the very early stages of a promising career but I seriously doubt if he'll have many better games than he did at Leyton Orient on Saturday. It was the kind of performance that can catapult a career."

The teenager entered the fray after Morecambe's starting goalkeeper Barry Roche was sent off and immediately saved Jay Simpson's 13th-minute penalty before pulling off a string of stops as the 10 men kept the Londoners at bay. An own goal by Ryan Edwards ended O'Hara's brave resistance six minutes from time when a clearance by Alan Goodall went in off the defender's back.

Meanwhile, Victor Valdes lifted the Belgian Cup with Standard Liege, thanks to a 2-1 victory over favourites Club Brugge. Ivan Santini hit a late winner in Brussels to earn Standard the trophy and a qualification spot in next season's Europa League.

United strikers James Wilson (in Brighton's 2-1 win at MK Dons) and Ashley Fletcher (in Barnsley's 2-0 triumph at Fleetwood) both played as their sides continue to push for promotion from the Championship and League One respectively. However, Nick Powell did not feature in Hull City's 1-0 loss to Middlesbrough in a key Championship game on Friday night.
