RESERVES: UNITED 3 SOUTHAMPTON 3

Premier League 2 | Old Trafford | Scorers: Redmond 62, Mitchell 70,75 (both pens) | Sims 16, Jones 50, Seager 88 pen

Manchester United Reserves approached this game against Southampton at Old Trafford looking to build on their much-needed victory over Sunderland at Eppleton Colliery Welfare Ground last week.

And they went remarkably close in the quest, despite being two goals adrift early in the second half.

Then goals from Devonte Redmond and two from the penalty spot by Demi Mitchell put United in the driving seat until Saints salvaged a point with late spot-kick effort of their own.

There was a distinctly eerie backdrop to game with the huge stands at Old Trafford barely populated with most fans having preferred to travel to London to take in the Emirates FA Cup quarter-final tie against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge or stayed at home to view the action on television.

The few die-hards that chose Old Trafford, and they were clustered around the halfway line in the lower tier of the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand, were certainly rewarded for their attendance in the opening few minutes as the game swung from one end to the other.

Callum Gribbin chanced his luck with a couple of long-range attempts without success and Saints’ Josh Sims went close in front of the totally deserted Stretford End. Then, in the 16th minute, the same player, Sims, was celebrating after giving the visitors the lead with a low shot from a few yards out, following a rare lapse by Axel Tuanzebe.

Midway through the first half and the fourth official was pressed into action after his colleague, who had been running the line on the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand side of the pitch, was forced to leave the scene after taking a tumble.

It was certainly a lively contest with both teams putting pressure on their opponents’ defence at every possible opportunity. Mitchell did well with a promising run down the left wing, but Scott McTominay was unlucky when the ball landed at his feet in the Saints’ goal area.

On balance, it was the Saints who’d probably had the best of the opening half but they just couldn’t make the most of the chances that came their way.

Five minutes into the second half and United fell further behind when full-back Alfie Jones got above the United defence to head the Saints into a two-goal lead from Harrison Reed’s corner.

Southampton had been threatening to add to their lead but, in the 62nd minute, United clawed their way back into the game with a goal from Redmond.

Reducing the deficit was just the boost United needed and they almost levelled a few minutes later when Joshua Bohui, on as an early second-half substitute for Regan Poole, fired inches wide of the Southampton post.

United’s fightback gained pace in the 70th minute when they were awarded a penalty after McTominay was fouled by Sam McQueen in the area. Mitchell stepped forward to take the spot-kick and put United level at the second time of asking after keeper Munoz Hassen had saved the original attempt. The referee had obviously spotted an infringement and immediately ordered the retake.

More drama was to follow, three minutes later, when the onrushing Matthew Olosunde was taken out by McQueen just inside the Southampton penalty area.

The referee Joseph Johnstone, without any hesitation, pointed to the spot and Mitchell again took the responsibility to blast United into the lead.

Southampton claimed a late share of the spoils when, with two minutes of normal time left, Ryan Seager grabbed the equaliser after the referee pointed to the spot for a third time.

United: O’Hara; Olosunde, Tuanzebe, Borthwick-Jackson, Mitchell (Hamilton 89); Poole (Bohui 52), Kehinde; Gribbin, McTominay, Gribbin; Willock. Substitutes not used: M. Johnsone, Scott, Warren.

RESERVES: LEICESTER 0 UNITED 0

Premier League 2 | King Power Stadium | Scorers: None

Manchester United played out a goalless draw at Leicester City with the two teams rarely threatening to get on the scoresheet.

Interim boss Nicky Butt had a much-changed side due to an Under-19 squad's participation at the Dallas Cup with Indy Boonen and Kayne Diedrick-Roberts handed debuts in the starting XI.

Right-back Charlie Scott was heavily involved early on, perhaps fortunate to escape a yellow card inside the opening minute, before lashing a shot over the bar with only two minutes on the clock. Raul Uche Rubio forced a save out of Dean Henderson and the United keeper's opposite number, Daniel Iversen, kept out Diedrick-Roberts from a tight angle, following a cute pass by Boonen.

There were precious few chances but the visitors did unlock the Foxes' defence with a patient move, only for Josh Harrop to fire off target. Boonen's evening ended prematurely when he was replaced by another debutant, defender Luca Ercolani, after failing to shake off an early knock.

Matty Willock, who was on the first-team bench against West Brom, chose the wrong option when shooting way over the top rather than crossing and Uche was also wayward with an ambitious long-range lob over Henderson that at least had the keeper backpedalling.

Leicester started the second half brightly with Uche forcing a decent diving stop out of Henderson, who pushed it away to safety. The Reds' rhythm was further affected when Willock tweaked his hamstring and Faustin Makela took his place. The fourth Premier League 2 debutant of the night for Butt's side has been on trial with Bury of late.

Skipper Axel Tuanzebe headed away a shot by Josh Gordon that may not have been on target but it was good work by the stylish centre-back as defences remained on top. A rare sight of goal arrived when Makela collected a pass wide by Harrop and thumped in a dangerous ball that was turned into the side-netting by Scott McTominay.

Leicester briefly pushed for a decisive goal with Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's effort deflecting just wide and, from the corner, Elliott Moore's header took a touch under Henderson but Demi Mitchell cleared off the line. Bartosz Kapustka then twice blasted shots off target before United finally carved out a couple of glimpses of goal.

Scott flashed in a volley when latching onto a loose clearance, only for Iversen to save relatively comfortably, and Makela drilled the wrong side of the far post after McTominay challenged for a throw-in by Ercolani.

The sides remained deadlocked and the three minutes of stoppage time passed without incident but Butt will be pleased with a point to keep the Reds four points clear of the relegation zone.

United: Henderson; Scott, Tuanzebe, Borthwick-Jackson, Mitchell; Willock (Makela 52), McTominay; Harrop, Redmond, Boonen (Ercolani 29); Diedrick-Roberts. Subs not used: O'Hara, Dunne, Spratt.

Arsenal U23s 2-2 Manchester United U23s: Nicky Butt's men battle back to earn a draw at the Emirates Stadium

* Nicky Butt's Manchester United U23s fought back from 2-0 down to earn a draw
* Reiss Nelson and Eddie Nketiah scored just after the half-hour mark for Arsenal
* United showed resolve through Josh Harrop and a Chiori Johnson own goal

Perhaps Jose Mourinho should take some advice from Manchester United’s reserve team on how to contend with positions of adversity at Arsenal.

On Sunday afternoon it was goals from Granit Xhaka and Danny Welbeck, timed three minutes apart, that did for Mourinho’s lacklustre stars at the Emirates Stadium.

Just over 24 hours later, on the same pitch, their under-23s suffered an identical fate as Reiss Nelson and Eddie Nketiah scored for the Gunners within the same time frame in the first-half.

But in contrast to Mourinho’s seniors, Nicky Butt’s second string refused to capitulate and, in a manner more befitting of United’s tradition, fought back brilliantly to earn a draw.

Josh Harrop halved the deficit as this contest entered its final 20 minutes and an own goal from Chiori Johnson late on earned United a share of the spoils.

Admittedly, it might all have been different had Donyell Malen not seen his spot-kick saved by United keeper Kieran O’Hara in between the two strikes but this was more like it.

Not that this draw changed a great deal. Arsenal stay in fourth position in the Premier League 2, something no doubt the watching Arsene Wenger will gladly accept from here in the real Premier League.

Manchester United U23s earned a draw against Arsenal after coming back from 2-0 down. Harrop managed to get his side back into the game when he netted after 72 minutes

But there was plenty for the Frenchman to enjoy, not least the performances of Nketiah and the lightning-quick left-back Cohen Bramall, who created the two goals.

It could also be the last time he watches Carl Jenkinson in Arsenal colours as the defender continued his adventures with the reserves. Surely he’ll be on the move this summer.

But by the end, after a second-half resurgence that seemed so unlikely, United deserved their point.

There were some curiosities on the teamsheets, with three brothers by the name of Willock on display.

The eldest, Matty, started for United, with middle sibling Chris opposite him in the Arsenal line-up. Joe, the youngest, was named on the Arsenal bench.

Then there was the United captain, Scott McTominay, playing once again at the Emirates just over 24 hours after he replaced Juan Mata for his first-team debut on Sunday.

It’s not been a brilliant season for United at under-23 level and they entered the contest just above the relegation places, although mathematically there was no chance of them going down.

But they knew a win here and in their final fixture against Tottenham could lift them to a more face-saving sixth place, and Butt’s side duly started brightly.

Substitutes not used: Richardson (GK); Whelan

Scorers: Harrop 72; Johnson own goal 85

Referee: Dean Treleaven (West Sussex)

Attendance: 2,573
They fashioned the game’s first opening on six minutes, with Harrop denied by the feet of Arsenal keeper Matt Macey after good work on the right by Callum Gribbin to centre.

But as the first-half wore on, Arsenal found their stride and Savvas Mourgos really should have scored after ghosting through a static United defence onto Nketiah’s through ball. His shot finished well wide of the far post, to United’s relief.

Mourgos should have broken the deadlock after Jenkinson found him in shooting space inside the box, but Cameron Borthwick-Jackson utilised his first-team experience to block. Moments later, as Arsenal attacked again, Nketiah fired over the top.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles, who has been shifted effectively from winger to an all-action central midfielder this season, then headed wide as Arsenal continued to put United under pressure.

A goal seemed inevitable and so it proved. Bramall tore into space behind enemy lines and had two or three red shirts in the centre to aim at.

Scott McTominay captained United just a day after replacing Juan Mata for the senior side

His cross was low, drilled across the six-yard box and beyond the reach of O’Hara. Nelson supplied the finish, sliding in from a couple of yards out for his sixth Premier League 2 goal of the season.

And just as Mourinho’s seniors failed to keep their concentration immediately after conceding on Sunday, so it proved here for the reserves.

Barely three minutes later and Nketiah was allowed sufficient space to twist inside the penalty area after receiving Bramall’s pass and fire home his 23rd goal of the season for the youth and reserve sides combined.

United were buoyed by the save and Joshua Bohui had golden opportunities for the visitors

Before the Red Devils forward fired for goal, which took a deflection off Chiori Johnson's boot

Arsenal relaxed in the second-half, though Joe Willock, who came on to complete a family hat-trick of appearances on the night, fired wide.

Indeed, some of Arsenal’s passing at the back invited pressure and Matty Willock saw an effort blocked and another saved by Macey, while Joshua Bohui was thwarted by Ben Sheaf’s well-timed tackle.

From Harrop’s corner, Bohui saw his powerful header turned over the top by Macey, and Harrop then gave United their brief flicker of hope.

Malen won his penalty following a neat turn inside the box, but O’Hara read his mind, diving low to his left to make a strong, one-handed save.

That seemed to give United a second wind and, after Harrop weaved his way into the box and fired for goal, it took a deflection of Johnson’s boot and wrong-footed Macey.

Reserves: United 3 Tottenham 2

Premier League 2 | Old Trafford | Scorers: Harrop 37,79,87 | Brown 47, Shashoua 51
Josh Harrop scored a brilliant hat-trick to earn Manchester United's Reserves a 3-2 victory in a see-saw encounter against Tottenham at Old Trafford.

Jose Mourinho watched on from the stands on a rain-soaked night as the game, rearranged due to the tragic death of Spurs coach Ugo Ehiogu, ended the Premier League 2 season.

Will Miller was heavily involved for the visitors, with Tyrell Warren blocking one shot before the midfielder attempted to play in Shilow Tracey, only for captain Joel Pereira to race out to save bravely. Shayon Harrison fired two wayward efforts off target before Tracey's curler was easy for Pereira to keep out.

United had failed to bother Brandon Austin until opening the scoring out of the blue with a moment of real quality. Matthew Olosunde rode two challenges to pass inside to Harrop and the Denzil Haroun Player of the Year contender bent a sweet drive wide of Austin from outside the area for his eighth goal of the season.

Spurs responded positively to the setback with, seconds later, Harrison touching a dangerous Miller cross the wrong side of the far post before Tracey and Harrison also forced saves out of Pereira before the half-time whistle.

Within two minutes of the restart, Tariq Hinds chipped the ball over for his fellow full-back Jaden Brown, left completely unmarked, to thrash the ball home for the equaliser. Tottenham's tails were up and they soon went in front, as Tracey ran through an exposed defence, held off Cameron Borthwick-Jackson and set up Samuel Shashoua for a cool finish past Pereira.

The game threatened to get away from the Reds with Shashoua going clean through again, unchecked, only for Pereira to rescue his side with a superb save and the Portuguese youngster also thwarted Tracey, when he was left in the clear after Tosin Kehinde was robbed of possession.

Devonte Redmond could only scuff a decent deep cross by Harrop into the side-netting as United tried to find a route back into the game. It arrived through top scorer Harrop, with 11 minutes remaining, as he fed Josh Bohui on the left and collected the return pass in the box. A wonderful drag-back lost two defenders and Harrop finished smartly to level matters at 2-2.

Bohui tried to beat Austin at his near post but the keeper dived to save and, with six minutes left, Harrop looked for his hat-trick but his curler did not come back enough and drifted wide. Crucially, his treble did arrive in style in the 87th minute. Substitute DJ Buffonge and Bohui created an opening that allowed Harrop to burst through three defenders before slamming home.

Anthony Georgiou could have equalised after getting the better of Regan Poole, only for Pereira to pull off another decent stop, and Zak Dearnley had a glorious chance to settle it late on, when teed up by Buffonge, but Austin deflected it to safety. The win moves United up to sixth spot in the final Premier League 2 table, while Spurs only avoided relegation on goal difference.

United:
Pereira; Warren (Hamilton 55), Poole, Borthwick-Jackson, Olosunde; Kehinde, Willock; Gribbin (Dearnley 65), Redmond (Buffonge 81), Harrop; Bohui. Subs not used: M. Johnstone, Dunne.

Manchester United U23 3-2 Tottenham U23: Jose Mourinho watches on as Josh Harrop's hat-trick earns hosts win

* Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho watched from the stands on Monday
* The Portuguese manager would have been impressed by Josh Harrop
* The 21-year-old midfielder scored a hat-trick for the hosts' U23s at Old Trafford
* Jaden Brown and Samuel Shashoua were on the scoresheet for Tottenham U23s

Josh Harrop could be the latest Manchester United prospect at the forefront of Jose Mourinho's mind after shining in front of the Portuguese boss on Monday night.

The 21-year-old midfielder scored a hat-trick for United's Under 23s as they beat Tottenham 3-2 in their Premier League 2 - which was watched by Mourinho.

The Red Devils was among those in the stands at Old Trafford as he watched on with members of his coaching staff - including assistant boss Rui Faria.

The United U23 midfielder is congratulated by his team-mates after scoring a hat-trick

The 21-year-old display would have pleased Jose Mourinho (right) who attended the match

Mourinho was seen sharing a joke with colleagues during the game and he would have been in an even brighter mood come full-time at the performance of Harrop and his team-mates.

The rain-soaked matchended the Premier League 2 season and was rearranged due to the tragic death of Spurs coach Ugo Ehiogu last month.

After a positive showing from Tottenham, it was United who took the lead through a moment of quality from Harrop.

Collecting a pass from Matthew Olosunde, who rode two challenges along the way, Harrop bent a beautiful drive from outside the penalty area and past the visitors' goalkeeper Tyrell Warren.

Spurs continued to dominate proceedings but found themselves down 1-0 at half-time.

Harrop celebrates after firing the Red Devils 1-0 up on 37 minutes with a sweet strike

However, the north London outfit equalised just two minutes after the interval thanks to Jaden Brown who rifled home Tariq Hinds' cross at the far post.

The game turned completely on its head on 50 minutes as Shilow Tracey ran through an exposed United defence before playing in Samuel Shashoua to finish past Joel Pereira.

Pereira, who will start in goal for the first-team against Crystal Palace on Sunday denied Spurs from extending their lead further with two crucial stops from Shashoua and Tracey.

The visitors were made to pay for those two misses as neat build-up play by Harrop and Joshua Bohui saw the latter level matters. Harrop's smart finish from 12 yards was completed by a wonderful drag-back to lose two defenders.

And with just three minutes remaining of normal time, Harrop's night became more memorable with the matchwinning goal.

Substitute DJ Buffonge and Bohui created an opening that allowed Harrop to burst through three defenders before slamming home.

The win moves United up to sixth spot in the final Premier League 2 table, while Spurs only avoided relegation on goal difference.
