'People wonder why Henderson was kept around... it was to push David': Darren Fletcher hails 'fantastic' De Gea as Spaniard returned to form in Manchester United's Champions League win at PSG

* David de Gea was a standout performer for Manchester United against PSG
* The Spanish goalkeeper produced a number of key saves as United won late on
* Marcus Rashford's winner clinched victory in Utd's Champions League opener

Former Man Utd midfielder Darren Fletcher was full of praise for David de Gea after the Spanish keeper showed signs of his former self in the Champions League win against PSG on Tuesday night.

De Gea, who after a tough few seasons is now under pressure from No 2 keeper Dean Henderson, made a number of crucial saves as United secured a vital three points versus last season's runners-up in Paris.

Marcus Rashford was the hero after his late winner but Fletcher took note of Spanish international De Gea's performance and emphasised the importance of the keeper in an impressive win at the Parc des Princes.

Ex-Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher praised David de Gea's performance

De Gea’s early contribution was vital for Manchester United in Paris on Tuesday night. The Spanish goalkeeper looked assured as United beat last season's runners-up late on

'People wonder why [Dean] Henderson was kept around, and it was to push David [De Gea],' Fletcher told BT Sport after the game.

'[Sergio] Romero was always happy to be number two. His performance tonight was fantastic. Dean Henderson is a threat but he has a lot to learn.'

Henderson spent the last two seasons out on loan at Sheffield United but signed a new long-term deal in the summer at Old Trafford, with De Gea's spot in the starting XI seemingly under threat from the 23-year-old English keeper.

But De Gea, 29, who has been with the club since 2011, has been Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first-choice keeper in the Premier League so far this season - and consolidated his place further with an excellent display on Tuesday.

Ex-United defender Rio Ferdinand praised Solskjaer for sticking by his man so far this season.

'He [David de Gea] had a period where he was making mistakes, it wasn't just one game,' Ferdinand said.

De Gea produced a number of crucial saves in United's Champions League opening match

'But Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer] backed him, so Ole deserves credit too.'

Bruno Fernandes, captaining his club for the first time, had given United the lead in the first-half following a re-taken penalty, but PSG - last season's runners-up - equalised after Anthony Martial headed into his own net from a corner in the 55th minute.

But amid an open finale to the contest, Rashford converted brilliantly into the corner to clinch the win and three points for Solskjaer's side in their Champions League opener.

akhir pekan lalu Maguire membayar kepercayaan yg diberikan Ole dengan mencetak gol dalam kemenangan 4-1 vs NU. skrg giliran De Gea yg menjadi membayar kepercayaan Ole, melakukan beberapa save setelah kritikan & penampilan buruk musim lalu. De Gea membuktikan dia belum habis dan siap bersaing dengan Henderson. dah lama gak liat De Gea jadi MOTM, sayang gagal cleansheet akibat own goal Martial

David de Gea produced a night to remember in Manchester United's win over PSG... his performance in Paris was a timely reminder of the natural and athletic goalkeeper he still is

* The Spaniard has endured a difficult time amid questions over his future
* But his early contribution was vital for Man United in Paris on Tuesday night

There was a moment at St James’ Park on Saturday night when it was tempting to wonder if anything was going to go right for David de Gea ever again.

As a Newcastle cross from the right deflected from Luke Shaw’s boot and past the Manchester United goalkeeper at the near post, De Gea seemed to have an opportunity to respond. But he didn’t. Rooted to the spot with his weight on the right side, De Gea could only watch the ball as it passed by him to his left.

It was not a mistake. It was just bad luck. But such things have happened so much to De Gea over the last two years that it has been painful to watch a goalkeeper apparently stuck in terminal decline.

David de Gea’s early contribution was vital for Manchester United in Paris on Tuesday night

Arguably, De Gea should have left Old Trafford three of four years ago. He had already done what he came to do. He won the Premier League and other trophies. Why remain?

There may still be something in that. United have a capable and impatient deputy in Dean Henderson now. It still feels as though the succession will come before long.

Here in Paris, though, there was a reminder of just what a natural and athletic goalkeeper De Gea remains.

United’s control of this game for long periods was impressive and unexpected. Until the moment Anthony Martial headed PSG back in to the game with an own goal early in the second half, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team were the better side by a distance.

The goalkeeper produced a performance to remind us just how naturally gifted he really is. De Gea bravely dives at the feet on Angel Di Maria to deny the PSG midfielder

Even after Martial’s strange blunder, PSG only threatened to gain the ascendency very briefly. By the time Marcus Rashford struck his second mortal blow in the French capital in the space of 18 months, United were dominant once again.

But none of that should overshadow the vital nature of De Gea’s early contribution. However well you play in games like this, no matter how brave your manager’s team selection and how smart your tactics, it is still fiendishly hard to get a result without big performances in your own half.

Here United got one from young defender Alex Tuanzebe. The 22-year-old had not played any football at all since injury struck last December and his Champions League experience had been limited to 18 minutes as a substitute almost three years ago.

Here, against the rapid pace of Kylian Mbappe and the admittedly rather erratic threat of Neymar, the young United defender was astonishingly assured. There have been those who have wondered for a while if Tuanzebe was ever going to kick on. Maybe that time is now.

Behind him, though, De Gea was superb, contributing a performance to remind us just how naturally gifted he really is. De Gea has not looked as comfortably excellent as this for a long time. In some ways this was a night to remind us just how far his standards have generally fallen in recent times.

So, yes, he was key to what happened on this wet night. Without his early stop from Angel Di Maria and his block from Abdou Diallo that followed a couple of minutes later, United would not have been able to ease their way to dominance in the game. Instead, Solskjaer’s team would have been chasing, PSG would have been confident and the night could have got away from the English team.

The Di Maria save was good without being great. The one from Diallo was world class and not long after that United were ahead.

This was a much better United performance than the one that got Solskjaer the job in March 2019. That night, United were gutsy but also lucky. PSG played suicidal football that evening and United had the nerve to capitalise. This was different. PSG were poor all night while United – set up courageously by a manager once again unafraid to leave out big-name players – were assertive and fluent. If truth be told, it all came as a bit of a surprise.

Solskjaer deserves credit. He continues to learn just how demanding and ludicrously consuming being manager of United is and time will tell if he can take them where they need to go. Doubts remain.

But he has had a very good few days. He could have reacted in many ways to his team’s home hammering by Tottenham before the international break but he has been decisive and clinical. Paul Pogba, for example, must feel as though a door has been slammed in his face.

Pogba was on the field by the time United won the game late on but again it was others making the difference. De Gea saved brilliantly again – this time from Mbappe – moments before Martial blundered. Rashford may have won it at the death but this was a victory earned from front to back of Solskjaer’s team.

semoga penampilan bagus De Gea berlanjut akhir pekan nanti vs Chelsea & digame2 selanjutnya, jangan sering blunder lagi

'He's made big mistakes that have cost United a lot of points': Roy Keane hits out at Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea AGAIN... before injured Spaniard is taken off at half-time against Southampton and replaced by Dean Henderson

* Roy Keane has not backed down in his war of words with David de Gea
* The United star has fielded criticism from the former captain in recent months
* De Gea said that comments from pundits were 'disrespectful' in an interview
* But Keane says that the criticism is warranted due to his 'unacceptable' errors
* De Gea was withdrawn at half-time of the game with Southampton due to injury

Roy Keane has hit out at David de Gea once more after the Manchester United goalkeeper fired back at pundits for their 'disrespectful' criticism of him in recent months.

The Spaniard's form over the last year has dropped from the performances that saw many label him as the best stopper on the planet, with uncharacteristic errors leading to criticism from some corners.

And former United captain Keane is one such pundit to have laid into De Gea in the past, with his criticism of the Red Devils goalkeeper in the 1-1 draw with Spurs last season attracting headlines.

But the Irishman has not backed down in his war of words with the Spanish goalkeeper, outlining that De Gea's mega-money contract should give rise to criticism when he makes errors.

De Gea was taken off at half-time of United's game with Southampton on Sunday due to injury with the Red Devils 2-0 down at the time.

'I have to say I'm still not his biggest fan. He doesn't do enough for me,' Keane told Sky Sports.

'He's on a huge contract and he's made big mistakes that have cost United a lot of points.

'He's obviously played sometimes behind a really poor back four. It's his job. He's on a really big contract. That's what you're supposed to do.

Roy Keane has not backed down in his war of words with Man United keeper David de Gea. The former United captain has been scathing with his comments in recent months. De Gea said some comments from pundits about his performances were 'disrespectful'. But Keane said that De Gea's lucrative contract means that criticism of him is warranted

'When people say he's a good shot stopper, that's his job. He talked about his time at the club, well he needs to be more consistent.

'When he does make a mistake, he will get criticised.

'I just think some of the mistakes have been unacceptable. I don't think I'm being too harsh. The games I've covered on the TV and I've been watching, he's made too many mistakes.'

De Gea had remarked on the unfair criticism he feels is cast his way by pundits and ex-professionals, labelling the comments 'disrespectful'.

'It's just the way they (pundits, former players) say the things, the headlines. It's disrespectful,' he told Sky Sports. 'It's something that players don't like. We are having ups and downs for a long time.'

'For me, one of the most important things is the mind. Be strong, be clever, be ready. To play every game for this club is hard, it's a lot of pressure. You have to be very focused and very strong in the mind.'

'I feel strong, confident in myself. There's a lot of David yet to come. Hopefully trophies will come. We are all ready to fight for it.'

Solskjaer revealed he wasn't too sure on the extent of De Gea's injury after the win but was confident the Spaniard will be able to return for next week's Champions League clash with PSG.

'Let's have a little check on him [De Gea],' Solskjaer said after the game. 'Hopefully he can be okay for Wednesday [against PSG] but I'm not sure. Dean [Henderson] played well though.'

'David de Gea BOTTLES it. He's scared of getting hurt... he actually makes himself smaller': Paul Scholes slams 'CRIMINAL' goalkeeping which led to RB Leipzig's winner - with Manchester United legend slating 'wooden' Harry Maguire too

* Manchester United are out of the Champions League after defeat by RB Leipzig
* Justin Kluivert scored the Bundesliga outfit's third goal with a dinked finish
* But Paul Scholes believes David de Gea should have claimed Angelino's cross
* The former United midfielder also slammed Harry Maguire's 'wooden' defending

Paul Scholes has blasted David de Gea's 'criminal' goalkeeping for RB Leipzig's third goal in their 3-2 victory against Manchester United.

The defeat - which saw United trail by three goals at one stage before Bruno Fernandes' penalty and Paul Pogba's header - knocked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men out of the Champions League.

The third of the German side's goals was scored by Justin Kluivert after neither United captain Harry Maguire nor De Gea could intercept Angelino's deflected cross before the Dutchman clipped the ball home.

Paul Scholes has blasted David de Gea's 'criminal' goalkeeping for RB Leipzig's third goal

And former United midfielder Scholes claimed De Gea was scared of sustaining an injury and therefore not only made himself smaller but did not look to claim the cross with any conviction.

'David de Gea bottles it here [third goal], he is scared of getting himself hurt,' Scholes told BT Sport. 'It [the cross] should never go across the box like that.

'As a goalkeeper, come out and make yourself as big as you can.

'You might get smashed in the face and you might get injured, but he [de Gea] turns his back away. He actually makes himself smaller, which is criminal for such an experienced goalkeeper.'

Justin Kluivert scored Leipzig's third after poor defensive play from United's goalkeeper. And former United midfielder Scholes slammed de Gea's 'criminal' role in the goal

Scholes also slammed England centre-back Maguire and questioned his mobility for the goal, labelling him 'wooden' and 'very stiff'.

But the former midfielder also criticised the squad following Maguire's post-match interview, in which he claimed United were not ready for the opening 20 minutes in Leipzig.

And while Scholes maintained the 'disaster' of the loss in Istanbul earlier in the group stage is the reason United are out, he was left baffled as to why the club started so slowly against Julian Nagelsmann's men.

Scholes also described captain Harry Maguire's defending as 'wooden' for the same goal

'Harry Maguire's interview was worrying, saying we weren't ready and at it for the first 20 minutes,' Scholes continued.

'How can you not be up for such a big game and such a tough game coming to Germany?

'They should never have been in this position in the first place, but they are, and they are not ready for the first 20 minutes.'

DE GEA: WE HAVE TO BELIEVE WE CAN WIN TITLE

David De Gea has paid tribute to a mean derby defensive display that he feels can be the foundation for a crack at the Premier League title for Manchester United.

A 0-0 Old Trafford stalemate against Pep Guardiola’s City side was only our third clean sheet of the Premier League campaign.

A 35th-minute stop from De Gea to deny the Blues' Riyad Mahrez a golden opportunity was a highlight of a stubborn stance from the Reds.

But if the Reds can pile up the shut-out stats at the back, our Spanish no.1 believes we can be in the shake-up to come in the fight for the 2020/21 league crown.

“I think, defensively, we were perfect tonight,” De Gea told us after the game.

“They didn't create too many chances, maybe two or three big chances, but I think, against them, it was defensively a great game.

“So we need to be happy, of course, for the clean sheet but maybe it's not enough, you know. We played at home, we always want to win, especially against Man City, so I think we missed a big chance to beat them today.

“But against players like [Kevin] De Bruyne, [Raheem] Sterling, good players, you have to be focused for the 90 minutes. So we did it today, I think we showed our confidence in defence. I think the players played really good today.

“For me, the most important thing in the team is the defensive part so, today, we showed again that we can defend good.

“We can be very strong in the back four and I think, the whole team, we pressed really high,“ he added. ”So we made them make mistakes in the build-up. So I think it was a good game for us, a tight game, so the draw was fine.

“We looked very well, we looked strong.

“Now I think, this year, the Premier League is very open, many teams are fighting for the title. We have to dream, we have to believe that we can win the Premier League this year and go for it.

“It's a very strange season. To be honest, there are many teams fighting for the top place, so I think we need to be very focused every game and try to win the Premier League.”
