Milk Cup 2009: Reds reign again in the Coleraine rain
Posted by nickogs20 on July 31, 2009

There was a distinct sense of deja vu in the air this evening as Paul McGuinness’ side took to the field for the Milk Cup final in exactly the same sort of atrocious Coleraine weather they experienced as they won the competition last season, and while there wasn’t quite the same dominant, swashbuckling performance that we witnessed 12 months ago, goals from Michael Ngoo and Etzaz Hussain ensured there was ultimately the same result – a Manchester United victory and more silverware for the Old Trafford trophy cabinet.

All the talk about opponents Sheffield United had been about how they hadn’t impressed in their semi-final penalty shootout win over FC Porto, but United weren’t about to take them lightly, the last three games between the two sides at academy level having all ended in draws. The absence of Joshua King (whose ankle injury had flared up in yesterday’s semi) and Ravel Morrison (who was serving a suspension) was another reason for caution – John Cofie and Michael Ngoo came in to replace that duo.

Anyone expecting a walkover for United will have been thinking again after an opening quarter of an hour that saw the Blades more than hold their own, although in truth both sides really struggled to assert themselves given the terrible conditions. Sheffield United had the wind at their backs in the first half and gave Sam Johnstone a couple of scares with shots from outside the box, but the England U17 keeper’s sound handling and judgement reassured his back four, and gradually the Reds started to string together the sort of passing football we know they’re capable of.

That said, when the breakthrough came after 17 minutes, it was a long pass that made the difference rather than the quick, short passing usually a hallmark of their play. Will Keane dropped deep and played a terrific long pass over the defence into the path of Ngoo, who initially failed to bring it under control. Robbie Brady was on hand to pick up the loose ball however, and when he cleverly picked out Ngoo with a precise cut-back, the big striker – on trial from Southend United – took a touch before coolly finishing with his left foot.

Confidence understandably surged through those in the red shirts, and 1-0 could easily have become 2-0 almost immediately, Will Keane first drawing a fine save from the Sheffield United keeper before then playing Ngoo in with a sublime dinked throughball that the triallist really should have done a lot better with. The Blades stuck to their task and refused to let United forget that they were in a real tussle now, but you always felt that it was going to take something special for them to turn this around.

While the lead was only 1-0 that was always a possibility of course, and as the game moved into the second half there was frustration on the Reds part that the scoreline remained that way, further chances coming and going, most notably a three-on-one breakaway where Ngoo managed to hit the only defender with his cross, with Cofie and Brady both unmarked in the area.

Nonetheless, that chance did seem to spark a period of concerted United pressure, Cofie and Brady both going close with efforts from the edge of the box, and you felt the second goal was only a matter of time. When it came, it was one from the top drawer, with Etzaz Hussain starting and finishing the move. The Norwegian midfielder picked up the ball forty yards out and found Tom Thorpe in space on the right flank. Thorpe in turn found Ngoo bursting into the box and the lanky forward produced a beautiful backheel into the path of Hussain’s run, leaving the 16 year-old with the relatively simple task of sidefooting the ball home past a wrong-footed goalkeeper.

While there was still 18 minutes remaining and there was always a chance something could happen, United letting a 2-0 lead slip from that point looked incredibly unlikely. The Blades had strung together some decent moves and worked extremely hard, but had only really threatened Johnstone’s goal with efforts from long range. The Reds lost a little bit of discipline late on (Brady and Tunnicliffe picking up bookings) and then conceded a scrappy goal from a set-piece to Kennedy in the first minute of injury time, setting up a nervy last couple of minutes, but there was to be no denying them a deserved victory, a second consecutive Premier section triumph and a fourth overall – both firsts.

As captain Brady underwent the Milk Cup ritual that sees the winning captain drenched in the aforementioned dairy product, his teammates celebrated after a terrific effort this past week, and Paul McGuinness spoke glowingly of his team, hailing their victory as a “great achievement” and picking out the second goal as an example of great football produced in entirely unhelpful conditions. As he also pointed out, many of this winning squad (including seven of the starting XI) will still be eligible next year, and three-in-a-row will now definitely be the target in 2010.

United 4 Huddersfield 1:
U18s complete pre-season prep with resounding win

Manchester United U18s 4-1 Huddersfield Town U18s
Morrison 1, 29 (pen) - ???? 67
King 4, 42 (pen) - -

United’s U18s finished their pre-season campaign with a very comfortable 4-1 victory over Huddersfield Town at Carrington this morning.

Starting on a new pitch for the 2009/10 season, the club had installed three permanent stands which can accommodate approximately 120 supporters. While it was good to get a seat, it did nothing to prevent the weather from giving all the supporters a drenching as the rain was vertical at times.

The game kicked off in sensational fashion with Ravel Morrison giving United a lead in the first minute. Three minutes later Josh King made it 2-0 with a good finish from a right wing cross by Nick Ajose.

United were clearly on top and the Huddersfield defence was all over the place. Once again King’s pace and strength was causing all sorts of problems. He was brought down in the penalty area just before the half-hour mark and Morrison stepped up to place it past the keeper. Then three minutes before half-time, a foul on King again, this time for shirt pulling, led to another penalty. This time Josh took the spotkick, and although the keeper got a hand to the shot, it had too much power and ended in the net.

Half-time: Manchester United 4 Huddersfield Town 0

Hussain and Ngoo had already come on as subs in the first half, replacing the injured Robbie Brady and Will Keane respectively. Paul McGuinness took the opportunity to make one additional change at the break, McGinty coming on for Thorpe.

In the second half, Huddersfield came out much more determined, while we relaxed and weren’t as decisive on the ball or with our passing. In fact, quite a few players were trying things on their own, rather than playing a team game. Morrison in particular was very slack at times.

To be fair, the terrible conditions didn’t help and Huddersfield scored a deserved consolation goal half way through the second period, a reward for a more dogged approach.

We made quite a few substitutions in the last half an hour, and there were few other chances to talk about.

Josh King was easily the best player on the park, while Morrison showed neat touches on occasions. Both Will Keane and Robbie Brady were excellent in the first half an hour before going off with niggles.

UNITED
1. Conor Devlin (13. Sam Johnstone 70)
2. Reece Brown (4. Tom Thorpe 63)
3. Luke Giverin
4. Tom Thorpe (15. Sean McGinty 46)

8. Ravel Morrison
9. Joshua King (12. John Cofie 61)
10. Will Keane (14. Michael Ngoo 36)
11. Robbie Brady (18. Etzaz Hussain 27)

The U18s now move on to the first game of the Premier Academy League season, again at Carrington next Saturday morning with Southampton making the long trip north for the first of five inter-group fixtures.

Academy Preview - Manchester United
Posted on: Fri 21 Aug 2009

Saints' Under-18's are in action against Manchester United in their opening fixture of the F.A Premier Academy League 2009/10 campaign.

United are not in Saints' group, represent one of two long distance matches scheduled for the youth team. The game will take place at United's Carrington training ground, with a kick off of 11am.

It will be the first competitive match for many of the first year scholars at the Saints Academy as they make the step up to Under-18's level.

Like Southampton, the Red Devils have taken on a large new intake of first years that will be hoping to follow a number of players into the first team. At Old Trafford, the likes of Danny Welbeck, Jonny Evans and Darron Gibson have all broken through in recent years.

Academy manager Matt Crocker and Coach Dave Puckett will take the youngsters up to Manchester hoping to improve on last season's away form after collecting just seven of their 38 point total on the road in 2008-09 under Stewart Henderson.

"Dave Puckett and I have taken things on with the youth team because Stewart Henderson has been helping out Alan Pardew with the first team," Crocker explained.

"Everything has been geared up for the first game against Manchester United away and in terms of performances, some boys have done well and earned the opportunity to play which is great and we want to encourage that.

"Overall they've worked well. James Bunce, the fitness and conditioning coach has been working closely with Dave, so fitness levels are spot on in preparation for the start of the season."

United 1 Southampton 3: Ruthless Saints punish new-look Reds for rookie mistakes

United’s new-look Under-18 side were given a harsh lesson in the realities of academy league football this morning after dominating long spells of their opening day clash with Southampton and still conspiring to fall to a 3-1 defeat.

With Carrington bathed in sunshine, things looked bright for a team containing seven new scholars when they took an early lead through a superbly-crafted goal from Ryan Tunnicliffe, yet a disastrous start to the second half saw the pendulum swing firmly in the Saints’ direction, as costly defensive mistakes handed goals to Jordan Keegan and – from the penalty spot – Garyn Preen.

The Reds poured forward in search of an equaliser but the visitors’ defence held firm and Callum McNish produced the goal of the game on the counter attack to clinch all three points for the boys from the South Coast.

Tottenham 1 United 3: U18s bounce back in style to stun Spurs
Posted by nickogs20 on August 29, 2009

v
Spurs 1-3 United
Goals : Wotton (og, 48') (spurs); Cofie 3', Brady 11', King 28' (united)

United’s U18 side produced the perfect response to last week’s opening day defeat with an impressive dismantling of Tottenham at Spurs Lodge this morning. The damage was done in a scintillating first half-hour as the Reds raced into a 3-0 lead with goals from John Cofie, Robbie Brady and Joshua King, and while Spurs pulled a goal back early in the second half and made much more of a fight of it, United weathered the storm and ultimately ran out comfortable winners.

The loss of Sam Johnstone, Tom Thorpe, Ravel Morrison and Will Keane to England U17 duty ensured Paul McGuinness would have to make at least four changes to last week’s starting XI, but such is the strength in depth of the pool of players available to him this season, the Reds boss was able to bring in Conor Devlin, Sean McGinty, Etzaz Hussain and Joshua King as replacements and barely weaken the side (if at all). The other seven starters from last Saturday’s defeat to Southampton all retained their places, meaning still no sightings of new signings Paul Pogba or Alberto Massacci.

Spurs won their Academy Group at a canter last season and were runners-up to Arsenal in the national playoffs so this had all the makings of a tricky away trip, but some devastating counter-attacking play saw United seize control and a 2-0 lead with the game only just over ten minutes old. John Cofie opened the scoring with less than 150 seconds having elapsed, latching onto Hussain’s lofted through-ball and powering past Blackwood with almost embarrassing ease before driving the ball low and hard past Oscar Jansson in the Spurs goal – a goal that showed what Cofie is all about, pace and power in abundance and an eye for goal.

Robbie Brady - skipper continued his scoring form

The hosts were stunned and firmly on the backfoot as the Reds constantly surged forward in numbers and at electric pace, looking to press home their early advantage. They didn’t have to wait long to do so either, as yet another rapid break caused havoc in the Spurs defence. Nicky Ajose’s ball in from the right was miskicked by Ryan Tunnicliffe but fell for captain Robbie Brady at the far post, who lashed the ball past Jansson from a tight angle.

McGuinness’ team looked like they could score every time they went forward and Spurs had no real answer to the pacy United front four and the central midfield promptings of Tunnicliffe and Hussain, so it was no great surprise when the Reds went further ahead just before the half-hour mark. What looked like a fairly harmless clearance forward from Reece Brown was flicked on by Cofie, and King found himself in acres of space behind the Tottenham backline. Full of confidence after his terrific start to the season, the Norwegian nonchalantly skipped past Jansson before slotting into the vacant net. For wildly differing reasons neither side really looked like they could believe the scoreline.

Things could have got worse for Spurs before the half-time interval as Tunnicliffe guided a free header inches wide and other promising United moves didn’t quite come off. As it was, Alex Inglethorpe’s side finally offered some resistance – skipper Harry Kane’s long-range effort leaving Devlin helpless and cannoning off the bar – and made it to the break with only the three-goal deficit, and they emerged for the second half determined to do something about it.

Lapses of concentration before and after half-time have been an achilles heel of sorts for United in recent times, and despite having the first chance of the second 45 (Brady curling a 20-yard freekick straight at Jansson), the Reds’ rearguard was caught cold again shortly after the restart.

Josh King - continued to impress

Winger Paul McBride had been the Lilywhites’ most promising attacking outlet in the first half and he did the damage, cutting in from the right and eluding Zeki Fryers and Sean McGinty before firing the ball across goal. Devlin got a hand to it but in the ensuing goalmouth scramble, Scott Wootton appearing to knock the ball over his own goalline under pressure from Kudus Oyenuga.

As is so often the case, that goal completely changed the complexion of the game, at least for a short while. All of a sudden it was Spurs in the ascendancy, and while King in particular continued to pose a real threat on the break for United, the team’s focus was forced to shift to weathering the Tottenham storm. A shaky ten minute spell saw the Reds become panicky in possession and unable to prevent the home side building up a head of steam, but the back four of Brown, Wootton, McGinty and Fryers held firm, ably supported by a hard-working midfield.

Gradually United were able to take the sting out of the game and regain some momentum, and the last quarter of the game was played out with the boys in red very much back in control. Chances came and went for Brady, King and Ajose, but spurning them never looked likely to prove costly as Spurs players were left chasing shadows at times by some excellent possession football. Cofie and King, having run themselves into the ground, were replaced by Jesse Lingard and Larnell Cole as the Reds closed out the game, 3-1 a more than fair reflection of their superiority over the ninety minutes.

STAR MAN: Joshua King – several others made compelling cases (Tunnicliffe, Hussain, Brady) but the 17 year-old from Oslo once again showed why everyone has been talking about him these past few weeks. Tottenham’s defenders couldn’t handle his pace, strength and ability on the ball, and on another day he could have ended up with a hattrick. Did look punched out near the end however and his substitution highlighted one major area of Josh’s game that still needs work – his fitness.

U18s: Leeds 2 United 2

United's Under-18s earned a 2-2 draw against Leeds on Saturday, after a late equaliser secured a point in a hard-fought game against Elland Road's youngsters.

Midfielder Ravel Morrison and defender Zeki Fryers were on the scoresheet for Paul McGuinness' young side.

Morrison had spurned a good early chance after a brilliant, intricate passing move from United. The Wythenshawe-born midfielder blazed over the bar from 18 yards, although the ball did appear to bobble before he struck it.

However, the 16-year-old was not so profligate with his next opportunity. John Cofie made a powerful surge through the heart of the Leeds midfield before slipping a pass to Morrison, who, from a much tighter angle, lashed his right-footed shot into the far corner.

In the second half there was another emphatic finish from a United midfielder, but unfortunately for Ryan Tunnicliffe, who was trying to clear a Leeds attack, he blasted the ball past Conor Devlin into his own net. Leeds continued to press forward in blustery conditions, and as the Reds failed to deal with a swirling cross to the far post, the home side found themselves in front.

United were trailing despite a good start, but a corner late on in the game gave the Reds a chance. With everyone forward, Zeki Fryers got his head to the ball and the Leeds defence couldn't prevent it crossing the line.

The result means the Reds have started the 2009/10 Academy Premier League campaign with a defeat, a draw and a victory so far. Next up is the visit of Huddersfield Town to Carrington on Saturday 12 September.

United: Devlin; Brown (Lingard 87), Thorpe, Wootton, Fryers; Morrison, Hussain, Tunnicliffe, Cole; W.Keane, Cofie.

U18s: United 3 Huddersfield 1

United survived a second-half fightback from Huddersfield, taking all three points after late goals from Ravel Morrison and Etzaz Hussain.

John Cofie's first half strike had Paul McGuinness' side ahead at half-time, but the visitors were a team transformed after the interval, and they deservedly levelled before the Reds' late flourish.

The hosts were comfortably on top in the early exchanges, and moved ahead as William Keane's shot was scrambled away on the goal-line, but only as far as Cofie, who hammered in from under a yard out.

Cofie fired off target with the clearest chance across the remainder of the opening half, as United called the tune, but the Reds' comfort was to prove misleading.

For much of the second half, however, Huddersfield were on top, and they levelled matters out of nothing, just before the hour mark. Goalkeeper Sam Johnstone's clearance was charged down and eventually ended up with Aiden Chippendale, who fired home a low effort.

Buoyed, Huddersfield applied further pressure as United sought to regain their composure. Morrison was only a yard off target with a 20 yard snapshot, while Hussain toe-poked an effort into the side netting from just inside the area.

The duo then combined to put United back in front. Hussain's long ball sprung the visitors' offside trap, giving Morrison time to take two touches and hammer in a powerful shot.

The sprightly playmaker then burst through eight minutes from the end and stabbed a ball across the six-yard box. In a three-way race to the loose ball, Hussain - who excelled in a defensive midfield role - beat Jesse Lingard and Terriers defender Lee Franks to slide in a finish.

Having seen his side fight back from a sapping setback to claim victory against a resurgent side who were hitherto unbeaten, McGuinness could reflect on a satisfactory morning's work at a sun-soaked Carrington.

Robbie Brady made it third time lucky in his quest to score from a set-piece as his brilliantly struck second-half free-kick handed United victory against Barnsley.

The young Irish forward had twice been denied by the crossbar in the first half.

In fact, Brady wasn't the only player to be foiled by the woodwork in the opening 45 minutes. Reds forward William Keane hit a post, as did Barnsley in a half that ended 0-0 but should have seen United take advantage of superior chances.

The Reds were not perturbed, neither was Brady as he continued to eye United's dead-ball duties. His third free-kick, from 25 yards out, proved more successful. The shot stayed low, and undetected, leaving the Barnsley goalkeeper rooted to the spot as the ball hit the back of the net.

That goal was all that separated the two teams, and the win was largely deserved on the balance of play. The slender winning margin could perhaps have been greater, but credit is due to a dogged Barnsley side.

United: Devlin; Thorpe, McGinty, Gill, Fryers; Morrison, Hussain, Tunnicliffe, Brady; Cofie, W.Keane
Subs: Johnstone; Lingard, Giverin, Wootton

U18s: Blackburn 0 United 0

United's U18s left Brockhall Village with a point after a 0-0 draw against Blackburn Rovers at lunchtime on Saturday.

Reds striker John Cofie went closest to finding the net when he hit the post on 23 minutes after a clever ball over the Rovers defence from Ravel Morrison. Morrison perhaps should have done better with the rebound – he sliced a volley over the bar from close range when it looked easier to score.

Earlier, William Keane had sent a header straight at the Blackburn goalkeeper, while at the other end Sam Johnstone in the United goal was relatively quiet. In fact, he was only called into action on 63 minutes, saving well down low from distance.

Nicky Ajose, still looking for his first goal of the season, tried his luck from 25 yards on 75 minutes and forced a fine save from the Blackburn stopper before Keane hit the side-netting from an acute angle shortly afterwards.

But try as they might, Paul McGuinness' men couldn't force a winner.
