U18s: Wolves 4 United 0

United's U18s slipped to a second consecutive defeat - and the heaviest loss of the season so far - when visiting Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.

With the two clubs also meeting at senior level at Old Trafford in the afternoon, the Reds had the chance to do the double over Wolves. Instead, the first leg became something of a cruel lesson for Paul McGuinness' young side, as Libyan player Zeli Ismael bagged a hat-trick for the dominant home side.

Ismael successfuly challenged centre-back Sean McGinty and rounded goalkeeper Liam Jacob to claim his first goal; he then made it 2-0 with a spot-kick after Michael Fornasier was penalised, perhaps harshly, for handball. Even though the referee ordered the penalty to be retaken, Ismael beat Jacob with his second attempt, just as he had done with his first.

Liam McAlinder put Wolves 3-0 up shortly after the break with a header. A low ball in from the right was then clipped past Jacob by Ismael at the near post to complete the Libyan's hat-trick and the scoring in the match.

The Reds earned credit for a stronger finish to the match with Jesse Lingard, who'd earlier struck the crossbar, continuing to probe, ably supported by substitutes Jack Barmby and Joe Rothwell. The latter was one of three boys making their U18 debuts, the others being centre-back Luke McCullough and winger Gyliano van Velzen.

United: Jacob; Fornasier, McGinty, McCullough, Blackett; Giverin (Rothwell), M. Keane, Hendrie, van Velzen; Lingard, Lawrence (Barmby). Sub not used: Coll.

U18s: United 3 West Brom 1

Paul McGuinness’s Under-18s got back to winning ways against West Bromwich Albion at Carrington on Saturday morning after a run of three straight defeats.

United got off to the best possible start when skipper Jesse Lingard was fouled in the box after just four minutes to win a penalty. The Reds attacker dusted himself down and coolly converted the spot-kick to make it 1-0.

The home side continued to dominate, with defender Sean McGinty, striker John Cofie and winger Gyliano van Velzen all going close to opening the scoring; Cofie’s initial attempt was saved by West Brom’s goalkeeper Shane Lewis, before Cofie’s second attempt was cleared off the line.

At the other end it took a while for West Brom to really threaten, but when they did it was forward Saido Berahino leading the attack. Reds keeper Liam Jacob kept the 17-year-old out with a fine save from Berahino’s free-kick. But a minute later he got revenge, with a turn and shot from the edge of the box to haul the Baggies level.

Parity only lasted five minutes as United’s own dangerman, Cofie, regained the lead. The Ghana-born English youth international used his pace and power to run at the West Brom defence before firing a low shot home from 20 yards.

The second half started much the same as the first: with a United penalty, this time for handball. This time Cofie placed the ball on the spot, sending the keeper the wrong way to make it 3-1. It is Cofie’s ninth Academy goal this season, his 12th at all levels.

West Brom had a goal disallowed, despite a fine strike from Gez Mulholland and Berahino continued to threaten from dead-ball situations and Lingard headed an effort off the line. After a frustrating losing streak though, United were not about to let this lead slip away.

United: Jacob; M Keane (Massacci 81), McCullough, McGinty, Blackett; Lawrence (Giverin 67), Pogba, Hendrie (Ekangamene 67), Van Velzen; Lingard, Cofie.
Subs not used: Coll, Thorpe

FA Youth Cup Third Round
Moss Lane, Monday 10 January

MANCHESTER UNITED 3
Pogba 29, Fry o.g. 59, W Keane 61

PORTSMOUTH 2
Williams 83, 90

10/01/2011 20:43, Report by Adam Bostock

United's bid to lift the FA Youth Cup for the first time in eight years got off to a promising start on Monday night with a 3-2 win over Portsmouth.

Three goals ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous ensured the Reds' domination was duly rewarded with victory. Paul Pogba opened the scoring with a piledriver that's becoming typical of his portfolio, Portsmouth goalkeeper Tom Fry gifted United the second by punching Larnell Cole's corner into his own net, before Will Keane notched number three with an excellent striker's effort. Although Ryan Williams pulled two goals back for Pompey in the last seven minutes, the Reds were worthy winners.

With Sir Alex Ferguson, Sir Bobby Charlton and David Gill in the Moss Lane crowd, the United youngsters had great incentive to impress and they duly set about their mission in the correct manner, knocking the ball around well despite the swirling wind and rain.

The lively likes of Larnell Cole on the right wing and John Cofie up front made a mockery of their lack of match practice, this being the academy boys' first game since 17 December. Cofie was aggrieved not to be awarded a first-half penalty when his surge into the box was halted by Dan Bennett's clumsy challenge; Cole went close to scoring when he forced Fry to parry at the near post. Both players were involved when Pogba eventually did put United 1-0 up, though the catalyst was Will Keane's run at the heart of the Portsmouth defence. As Keane's shot was blocked, Cole reacted quickly to seize possession on the fringes of the area and feed Cofie - it was from the latter's lay-off that Pogba bent a beautiful first-time shot beyond Fry into the top left-hand corner.

The lead was no more than United deserved, even if goalscoring attempts had largely been confined to a few pot-shots from outside the area - Pogba's obviously being the pick. Portsmouth threatened on a couple of occasions in the first period, but both Billy Tsovolos, and captain Lewis Stockford via a deflection off Reds left-back Tyler Blackett, missed the target from promising positions. Portsmouth defender Bennett was fortunate again as United continued to pile on the pressure towards the interval - this time escaping what could have been a red card for scything into Will Keane.

The game's pivotal period was the quarter-hour or so after half-time when the Reds won a series of left-wing corners to trouble Fry. If flapping at United's ninth corner wasn't bad enough, then punching the tenth into his own net as Cole swung in the dangerous 59th-minute setpiece was plain awful. The Reds compounded the pain for the Pompey keeper when Will Keane made it 3-0 just two minutes later. Ryan Tunnicliffe, turning in his usual all-action shift at the heart of United's midfield, picked up a loose ball and supplied it to Keane. The talented striker did the rest, buying himself some space with a burst into the left channel of Pompey's box before firing a ferocious left-footed shot past Fry.

Keane, who turns 18 with his twin and team-mate Michael tomorrow, could have been celebrating a birthday hat-trick - he had two goals controversially disallowed for offside in the subsequent seven minutes. The first followed a glorious crossfield ball from his sibling at right-back, the second was a tap-in from Cole's slide-rule pass along the six-yard line.

In between, there was a warning sign of the frantic finish to come when Williams' shot was saved by Johnstone diving low to his left. That said, United were still 3-0 and relatively cruising when coach Paul McGuinness made a triple substitution in the 76th minute - Zeki Fryers, Jesse Lingard and Alberto Massacci replacing Michael Keane, Cole and commanding centre-back Michele Fornasier. The Reds could even afford to miss a penalty two minutes earlier - Gyliano van Velzen's re-take was saved after he scored with the initial kick, awarded for a foul on Will Keane.

There may be an inquiry at Carrington, therefore, as to how Portsmouth came to almost snatch an unlikely draw with Williams' late double - a fine finish across Johnstone into the bottom right-hand corner and a more troubling second strike through the keeper at the near post. But the priority will swiftly become preparation for the next cup tie - the Reds travel to Upton Park for a clash with West Ham next Wednesday, 19 January (19:00 GMT).

United: Johnstone; M Keane (Lingard, 76), Thorpe, Fornasier (Massacci, 76), Blackett; Cole (Fryers, 76), Tunnicliffe, Pogba, van Velzen; Cofie, W Keane. Subs not used: Jacob, Hendrie.

91 mins: GOAL! Mcginty surely with the winner for United. Corner comes in, lands into Mcginty's feet and it's a good finish into the corner.
