SINGAPORE - Pele made the No 10 jersey the most famous and cherished in the world, Eric Cantona was arguably the greatest No 7 in the history of the English Premier League.

Today, both men are tied to Major League Soccer (MLS) club New York Cosmos and it is that link that could bring the pair to Singapore.

Late last week, sources told MediaCorp that negotiations were at an advanced stage for Brazil's Pele, the honorary president of the club, and Frenchman Cantona, Cosmos' director of soccer, to visit Singapore next month as part of a Courts initiative involving the MLS club.

The duo were scheduled to grace the Great Eastern-Yeo's S-League fixture on Mar 3 between the Courts Young Lions and Geylang United but a joint decision by world governing body Fifa and the Asian Football Confederation may change their itinerary.

The Yemen-Singapore Olympic qualifier, originally scheduled on Feb 23, has been postponed to Mar 2 due to the ongoing political instability in Yemen.

With a large number of Singapore players hailing from the Courts Young Lions, a postponement of the team's S-League fixtures during that period is almost certain.

Responding to queries from MediaCorp about Pele and Cantona yesterday, Courts issued a statement saying: "With our Courts Young Lions sponsorship, we are looking at different activation activities to reinforce our commitment to our S-League sponsorship. We are still in discussion with New York Cosmos representatives and details are still not finalised yet."

Young Lions' skipper Hariss Harun is keeping his fingers crossed something can be worked out and Pele and Cantona will get to see them play.

"I've only heard about their visit from the newspapers and I'm still hoping we'll be able to play in front of them. It's not often that these legends come to Singapore and it'll be a big miss if we can't be watched by them," Hariss told MediaCorp.

The 20-year-old was set to miss the Yemen qualifier as his examinations at Nanyang Polytechnic end on Feb 24 but the postponement means he is clear to lead the team out in Sanaa on Mar 2.

"The coaches were pleased when I told them the news on Saturday. But I still hope the Young Lions can play in front of Pele and Cantona. The crowd will surely fill the stadium and it'll be great motivation for us on the pitch," he said.

Gombak United chairman John Yap believes the buzz surrounding the visit of the duo, if it happens, will be excellent for the local game.

"They are two football icons and there is likely to be international media coverage when they're here, and it will be great publicity for the Young Lions and even the S-League," said the stockbroker.

"Courts are clearly very interested in their club and Singapore football and I'm sure they'll leverage on the visit to raise their profile, and that of the club and league.

"I'm imagining Pele, arguably the best player to ever play the game watching an S-League game - I'm sure the stands will be packed with people who'll come just to catch a glimpse of him."

Masalahnya ini belum pasti, sementara yang di Malaysia kan memang sudah ada jadwalnya. Jika memang sudah pasti, kesempatan langka kan bisa ketemu Pele dan Cantona ? Hehe ...

Sekarang harga paket wisata ke beberapa negara ASEAN malah sering lebih murah dari harga paket wisata ke Bali. Tidak heran dalam beberapa tahun terakhir banyak orang Indonesia travelling ke negara seputar ASEAN.

Btw, sayang yach Pele dan Cantona tidak mampir ke Indonesia padahal cuma 1 jam perjalanan hehehe ...

Cosmos kings confirm S'pore trip
Football legends Pele and Cantona to arrive next week

SINGAPORE - It is official. Widely regarded as the greatest to play the game, Pele (picture) will visit Singapore from March 3 to 5, accompanied by Manchester United legend Eric Cantona.

MediaCorp revealed the impending visit of the storied duo last week, and yesterday retail giants Courts confirmed that in partnership with American club the New York Cosmos, Pele the club's honorary president, and Cantona, who was recently appointed Cosmos' director of soccer, will accompany the club's executives on their Asian Tour to promote the club.

"I am delighted that our commercial team has secured a prestigious partnership with The New York Cosmos, particularly in bringing legends Pele and Cantona to Singapore," said Courts chief executive Terry O'Connor.

Pele and Cantona will be in attendance at a football fiesta at the Jalan Besar Stadium on March 3 where Courts will announce their partnership with Cosmos, who are seeking a return to Major League Soccer by 2013.

MediaCorp understand the pair will be engaged in activities promoting Cosmos on March 4 but will visit the Courts Megastore at Tampines the following day where they will meet fans and sign autographs.

Courts recently splashed S$1 million to be title sponsors of S-League side, the Courts Young Lions, and the visit by the luminaries is part of their effort to reinforce their commitment to the sponsorship.

Vanda Sports are the agency running the off-the-field activities of the Young Lions, and their founder Ian Mullane told MediaCorp: "The football fiesta is not a mass market event, it is only for the Courts Young Lions fan club members, and Courts members. Courts are providing the opportunity to activate the fan club and encourage more people to join."

MediaCorp believe the fiesta, hosted by television football pundit PJ Roberts, will see musical performances as well a football skills competition judged by Pele and Cantona.

The duo will be quizzed by 987FM pair, The Muttons, at the venue as fans take part in competitions to win prizes that include photo opportunities with the football legends.

Pele and Cantona were originally scheduled to grace the S-League encounter between the Young Lions and Geylang United on March 3 but a rescheduled Olympic Qualifier against Yemen has seen that fixture postponed, to the disappointment of Young Lions skipper Hariss Harun.

But Mullane promised that with the support of Courts, there will be more sporting big-names who will make their way to Singapore.

"This is part of the activities lined up for this year, and there are several sporting organisations who want to gain regional presence by aligning themselves with Singapore football."
