Warren Joyce is switching his attention to Friday's Barclays Under-21 Premier League clash with Chelsea after his team were knocked out of the Lancashire Senior Cup by Bolton Wanderers.

Reece James' miss proved crucial as the Trotters won a penalty shoot-out 5-4, following a 1-1 draw at Moss Lane, to end the Reds' grip on the trophy. Although United have a Manchester Senior Cup final to look forward to against City, the main focus is on achieving a top-four finish to clinch a semi-final place at league level.

With Chelsea above Joyce's charges in the table, their visit to the Leigh Sports Village in another live MUTV fixture, with free entry for all supporters if they email football@leighsportsvillage.co.uk in advance, is clearly a real test for the youngsters.

"I've said to them that really, in 90 minutes, regardless of whatever frustrations we might have about the development and fact we didn't do well enough, we've still got a five-game unbeaten run," Joyce told MUTV. "We have to be a lot better on Friday than we were on Monday to get the right result.

"Obviously, I'm disappointed to go out because it's a competition we've won several times in the last few years but I'm more disappointed with the performance. We've had a good run of form and played slick football with a lot of energy about our play as well, but I didn't think that was there.

"Sometimes, you can have gut feelings before the game and, when I looked at them in the warm-up, I just thought one or two were not quite mentally as sharp as they should be and that showed in their play.

"This group obviously had disappointment in the UEFA Youth League and we've put some demands on them in the last few weeks. They responded really well but, at times when it's not going great for you, you have got to see games out. To concede in the way we did was really disappointing as it was just basic things."

United starlet Wilson pushes for Premier League debut with another cracking goal

Mousa Dembele made a welcome return to action for Tottenham in Monday's Under 21 clash against Manchester United but it was wonderkid James Wilson who stole the show by grabbing the winner.

The 18-year-old United striker pushed his claims for a first-team debut by scoring a second-half cracker at White Hart Lane.

Wilson collected the ball on the edge of the box and unleashed a low drive into the corner in the 58th minute.

It came just days after Wilson scored a piledriver against Aston Villa in front of manager David Moyes at Old Trafford.

With United only playing for pride in their five remaining Premier League fixtures, manager David Moyes will have the opportunity to give Wilson a run-out before the end of the season. He was named on the bench for the victory at Newcastle earlier this month.

Spurs fielded a strong side featuring Dembele, who has missed the last two games through injury, Nabil Bentaleb and former Red Devils defender Zeki Fryers.

Souleymane Coulibaly had a first-half effort disallowed for offside, while Ruben Lameiras and then Coulibaly were denied by a fine double save from keeper Ben Amos.

Manchester United failed to get the three points required to qualify for the Barclays Under-21 Premier League semi-finals as Norwich City came from two down to earn a 2-2 draw.

Substitute James Weir, who replaced star striker James Wilson, netted both goals before Carlton Morris pulled one back from the penalty spot. Despite Raymond Grant's red card, Reece Hall-Johnson snatched a barely-deserved equaliser in the closing stages.

The Reds dominated the first period without really testing Remi Matthews in the Canaries' net. Wilson skied his effort when presented with a first sight of goal and was off target with two other efforts, one after linking superbly with Andreas Pereira.

A free-kick by Pereira led to a shout for handball inside the box but, although Joe Rothwell miskicked when picked out by Saidy Janko in a promising position, there was no great danger to the visitors. When Wilson hobbled off seven minutes into the second half, it left Warren Joyce's side without a recognised striker.

Pereira shifted into the central attacking role and worked Matthews for the first time just before the hour mark after a shrewd pass by Ben Pearson. The breakthrough arrived when Rothwell did well to backheel down the line to Guillermo Varela, who released Janko. Pereira's shot deflected up in the air and, when Louis Rowley appeared to nudge a header beyond Matthews, Weir had the simple task of touching into an empty net.

A second followed when Varela crossed from the right and Weir buried a firmly-struck drive past Matthews to double the lead and reward the Reds' possession football. However, City replied with 10 minutes left as Morris' cute penalty outfoxed Joel Castro Pereira following a handball by Rowley.

It set up a tense finale which included a red card for Raymond Grant in the 85th minute for simulation after Pearson, who had also previously been booked, moved in to challenge. Yet Norwich stole a point from only their second shot on target all game as Hall-Johnson saw his speculative drive deflect and squirt past Pereira.

There was still time for captain Reece James to fire in a cross that had Matthews at full stretch as the Reds poured forward but the disappointing result, which was extremely harsh on Joyce's side, leaves United still needing a win at Reading next Thursday, as things stand, to make the top four.

Manchester United produced an incredible comeback to clinch a semi-final place in the Barclays Under-21 Premier League and cling on the trophy that was won at Old Trafford last year.

James Wilson opened the scoring but limped off after an hour as strikes by Tarique Fosu and Harry Cardwell threatened to end the Reds' season. Instead, James Weir, who replaced Wilson, grabbed his third goal in two games and, improbably, centre-back Paddy McNair arrived right on cue at the edge of the box to belt in an injury-time winner.

Wilson produced a shot on target within four minutes, although Andreas Pereira may have been a better option, and another break saw Saidy Janko fire wide of the far post when not maximising an opportunity after being picked out in lots of space by Joe Rothwell.

It was Rothwell who supplied the assist for the opener as his pass in the right-hand channel evaded the defence and Wilson's eyes lit up as he accelerated into the clear. Dan Lincoln was given no chance as the striker glanced towards the middle before clinically finding the net.

Nobody was in the six-yard box for a tap-in when the impressive Reece James sent over an inviting centre but the Royals had chances themselves in the first period. Charni Ekangamene halted Gozie Ugwu in full flight and the powerfully-built hitman later lashed just over Ben Amos' bar.

Aaron Tshibola, who played for United in the Aegon Future Cup two years ago, shot off target, as did Liam Kelly, with Martin Kuhl's youngsters finishing the half the stronger. The second 45 minutes started in similar fashion with Tshibola's effort simple for Amos but Jack Stacey should have hit the target when heading over a cross that bounced over James.

Fosu struck a real blow just before the hour when brushing off Rowley, who perhaps slipped, and being allowed to advance on goal to launch a superb drive wide that beat Amos' left hand to send the net bulging and cheer the home supporters.

James had a couple of attempts, bending one at Lincoln and having a well-struck volley that was unfortunately straight at the keeper, but the Under-21 Premier Cup winners looked the likelier victors at that stage. Cardwell headed inches wide of the post from a Tshibola cross and it should have acted as a warning to the Reds.

However, moments later, Stacey charged through the middle and evaded James' challenge to shoot goalwards. Although Amos blocked, substitute Cardwell was on hand to steer into the empty net to hand his team the lead.

United perhaps should have looked down and out but responded swiftly with Ben Pearson threading a ball into Weir, who turned sharply and saw his shot deceive Lincoln. The keeper recovered but the ball was adjudged to have crossed the line, much to his disbelief.

The finale was frenetic and exciting with both teams having chances, Cardwell and Janko missing two of them, until the third and final minute of stoppage time. Janko burst forward and Guillermo Varela kept his cool to find McNair on the edge of the box, with the defender rifling past Lincoln to set up a play-off clash against Liverpool courtesy of finishing third in the division - a truly remarkable effort by Joyce's squad.

Manchester United's Under-21s take on Liverpool at Anfield on Friday in a huge play-off clash for the right to meet Manchester City or Chelsea in the final.

The Reds clinched a top-four spot in dramatic fashion as Paddy McNair's injury-time strike earned the three points required from the trip to Reading in the final game of the regular Barclays U21 Premier League programme.

After winning the inaugural competition in 2013, Warren Joyce is keen for his young side to illustrate their progress by emerging victorious on Merseyside in a tie that is being screened live and free-to-air on MUTV and will go to extra time and penalties if required.

"When you're this close, you want to win it," Joyce told ManUtd.com. "We know it's going to be a tough game. I just hope everyone is fit and available and we put on a Manchester United performance."

James Wilson and James Weir have been carrying knocks but both have been vital in the run-in, scoring some crucial goals.

"Wilson came off at Reading because we were just wary of losing him altogether for the rest of the season," explained Joyce. "Hopefully, he will still play a part this season. Weir has done tremendously well but has not trained a great deal between games. Some of them are getting wrapped in cotton wool a little bit as they've had a long, hard season and picked up little niggles from time to time."

The two clubs met in United's opening U21 game of the season when Adnan Januzaj starred for the home side and Fabio Borini, who will play for Sunderland at Old Trafford this weekend, scored twice for Liverpool in a 4-2 victory. Only four of United's 16 players on duty in August appear likely to run out at Anfield - Ben Amos, Guillermo Varela, Charni Ekangamene and unused substitute Joe Rothwell - emphasising the changing nature of the squad this term.

Manchester United retained a grip on the Barclays Under-21 Premier League trophy thanks to Andreas Pereira's wonderful winner at Liverpool.

A dogged performance at Anfield secured a sweet semi-final triumph to set up a clash against Chelsea with the date and venue still to be decided.

The Reds made a blistering start and should have been ahead inside four minutes. Brad Smith unwisely gifted James Wilson possession on the edge of the box and, although his shot beat Ryan Fulton, it came back off a post. The fact the striker held his head in his hands suggested he felt he should have scored.

Joe Rothwell then fizzed a shot over the top after Saidy Janko's cross fell to Tom Lawrence outside the area as the pressing from midfield threatened to reap dividends. The Merseysiders gradually got a foothold in the game but Ben Amos was untroubled by off-target efforts from Jordan Lussey and Kristoffer Peterson.

Paddy McNair, the hero at Reading in the last outing, forced a good stop out of Fulton on the half-hour mark with the keeper reacting well to save at Wilson's feet as the ball went loose inside the six-yard box. With Lawrence, back from a loan spell at Yeovil Town, Pearson and Rothwell buzzing around with intent, the Reds were rewarded with a goal a minute before half time.

Rothwell and Lawrence traded passes but there seemed little danger when Pereira collected, only for the precociously-talented Belgian to dip a stunning curler past Fulton at the Kop End. Jack Dunn, who had been quiet, blasted wide in response from a Cameron Brannigan backheel but United were looking good at the interval.

Although Pereira tried his luck from distance again to force a straightforward save out of Fulton, United were largely content to contain the hosts and comfortably draw out their sting. Amos made simple stops to deny Peterson and Rafael Paez, who rose highest to win a header, but was not overly worked.

The action started to come at the other end when Pereira's fine run was ended by Lloyd Jones and Lawrence bent an attempt wide as Warren Joyce's side burst into life again with Pearson denied by a double save from Fulton. However, with eight minutes left, Liverpool spurned a rare clear-cut opening when Peterson headed over after a free-kick came his way.

An even more glaring chance was to follow when Amos saved well but pushed the ball into the path of substitute Villyan Bijev but the Bulgarian's finish cleared a gaping goal. Wilson and Lawrence both limped off to leave the Reds short of options going forward but a clean sheet secured another marvellous win as Joao Teixeira and Bijev were unable to snatch an equaliser in a late rally.
