Martin Atkinson to referee Manchester derby for second year running as Manchester City look to clinch Premier League title

* Martin Atkinson will take charge of his fourth Manchester derby on Saturday
* Manchester City can clinch the Premier League title with victory over their rivals
* Atkinson refereed last season's goalless draw at the Etihad Stadium
* He also sent off Marouane Fellaini for a headbutt on City striker Sergio Aguero

Martin Atkinson will take charge of the Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium for the second year in a row.

It promises to be a momentous occasion with Manchester City able to clinch the Premier League title on Saturday evening if they beat neighbours United on home soil.

Atkinson sent off Manchester United's Marouane Fellaini for a headbutt on Sergio Aguero towards the end of last season's goalless draw at the Etihad.

Martin Atkinson will be in charge of Manchester City's derby clash with Manchester United. Atkinson shows Marouane Fellaini a red card in last season's goalless draw at City

Jose Mourinho disputed the decision although he was more upset with Aguero than the 47-year-old Yorkshire referee.

'I didn't watch but probably I can guess it's a bit of a red card and that it's a bit of a very experienced, smart Argentinian player,' said Mourinho, who was also unhappy that the officials did not clamp down harder on City's attempts to keep Marcus Rashford quiet.

'Marouane says it was a red card because he is Marouane. Martin Atkinson told me in his opinion it was a red card but I saw Aguero in the tunnel - no broken nose, no broken head, his face is as nice as always.

'So, I am not so sure. I think if Sergio doesn't go to the floor, for sure it is not a red card. But if Marouane gave him the chance to do that, I don't know.'

Prior to that game, United won all three Manchester derbies in which Atkinson had been in charge with late goals - the dramatic 4-3 victory at Old Trafford in September 2009 thanks to Michael Owen's 96th-minute strike, a 1-0 win at the Etihad in April 2010 when Paul Scholes scored in the 90th minute, and a 3-2 away win in December 2012 when Robin van Persie snatched another later decider.

MANCHESTER DERBY PREVIEW: CITY V UNITED

Setting the scene: The Reds make the short trip across town to the Etihad Stadium for the second Manchester derby of the season this weekend. United will be looking to avenge the 2-1 defeat against City at Old Trafford back in December and further consolidate second place in the Premier League, but it will be a tough task against the leaders, who will be looking to put their emphatic UEFA Champions League defeat at Liverpool in midweek behind them.

How can I follow it? Saturday’s big match kicks off at 17:30 BST and will be broadcast live in the UK on Sky Sports. MUTV subscribers on Sky or Virgin Media, the MUTV app, or online at MUTV.com can enjoy match build-up from 15:30 BST on the Match Day show and listen to radio commentary of the game, before watching it in full on Sunday at 18:00 BST. You can also keep up with all the action as it happens via ManUtd.com's live match blog and our official Twitter account @ManUtd.

What’s the team news? The boss declared before last weekend’s victory over Swansea City that Phil Jones and Ander Herrera have both regained full fitness, which was a welcome boost for the Reds on the injury front. He also said that Daley Blind has returned to training and it remains to be seen if the Dutchman will be available for selection this weekend, but Sergio Romero is expected to be out “for a few weeks” after sustaining an injury on international duty with Argentina. Mourinho could give a further update on his squad in Friday’s pre-match press conference. Meanwhile, City could be without top scorer Sergio Aguero, who missed Wednesday’s 3-0 Champions League quarter-final first-leg defeat at Liverpool through injury. John Stones and Fabian Delph were unused substitutes at Anfield and could be involved on Saturday after recent injuries, but Bernard Mendy is expected to remain sidelined.

How have we been doing? The Reds enter our first match of the penultimate month of the campaign in fine fettle overall, winning the last four games in the Premier League including notable victories over Liverpool and Chelsea at Old Trafford. United have also bounced back from the disappointing UEFA Champions League exit with successive 2-0 wins at home either side of the international break, against Brighton & Hove Albion in the Emirates FA Cup and Swansea City in the league last Saturday.

What about City? Pep Guardiola’s side have enjoyed a formidable season so far, in which they have won the Carabao Cup, reached the last eight of the Champions League and are close to securing the Premier League title. The Blues have won their last five Premier League games, scoring 14 goals and conceding just twice, since a 1-1 draw at Burnley on 3 February and enter the match on the back of Wednesday’s Champions League quarter-final first leg against Liverpool at Anfield.

What’s our record like against them? Historically, the Reds have a strong record against our near neighbours heading into the 176th Manchester derby – winning 72 and drawing 52 of the previous 175 encounters. United also hold the edge in the 40 Premier League encounters between the sides, winning 20 to City’s 13 while there have been eight draws – including the goalless stalemate in last season’s corresponding fixture 12 months ago. The Reds lost out in the reverse fixture at Old Trafford in December; David Silva opened the scoring for the visitors before Marcus Rashford levelled matters on the stroke of half-time, but Nicolas Otamendi’s 54th-minute effort proved the difference.

One to watch:
In a team packed with multi-talented superstars, Kevin De Bruyne has been the shining light for City this season and is deservedly in the running for the PFA Player of the Year award. The Belgian playmaker, who has been instrumental in many of City’s wins this season, has scored 11 goals and registered 20 assists in all competitions this term. Capable of opening up any defence, De Bruyne is the chief orchestrator for Guardiola’s side and the Reds will have to be alert to nullify his considerable threat.

What they said: Juan Mata is keen to give the Reds faithful a performance they deserve in Saturday’s derby. Writing in his blog, the Spaniard said: “This game doesn’t come in an ideal situation, for there’s quite a gap of points between the two of us, but we all know that it’s a special game. We’re looking forward to playing against them and having a good performance. That’s what our fans deserve.”

Did you know? Our last derby matchwinner in the league was Marcus Rashford, whose dream introduction to first-team life in the spring of 2016 was capped with the only goal of the game in his first taste of the derby at senior level, while that strike at the Etihad also made him United’s youngest derby goalscorer in the Premier League era.

Will defences be on top? Perhaps unsurprisingly given the fact the top two teams in the division are up against each other, Saturday’s game will bring together the best defences in the Premier League this season, with United conceding 23 goals and City just 21 in 31 games so far. The Reds have kept clean sheets on our last two visits to the Etihad Stadium and David De Gea is leading the way in the race for the Golden Glove with 16 shut-outs in the league, two more than City’s Brazilian stopper Ederson who is in second place.

How will we get on? Get involved and predict the score of the game with the Manchester United Score Predictor and win amazing prizes throughout the season with Marathonbet.

Remembering Ray: The Premier League has confirmed there will be a moment's applause before kick-off on Saturday - and at grounds up and down the country - in memory of former United midfielder Ray Wilkins, who sadly passed away on Wednesday at the age of 61.

Who’s the referee? Martin Atkinson will take charge of his fifth Manchester derby and the Reds are unbeaten in the previous four, including the 0-0 draw at the Etihad Stadium last season in which he sent off Marouane Fellaini. The West Yorkshire whistler will also oversee his fifth United game of the campaign and his first since the 2-1 win over Chelsea at Old Trafford on 25 February. He will be assisted by Lee Betts and Stephen Child, with Craig Pawson on fourth official duties.

REFEREES SUPPORT RESPECT CAMPAIGN

This weekend’s Manchester derby coincides with the annual REFspect campaign, which aims to involve more people in refereeing at grassroots level and to encourage more referees and match officials to stay in the game.

The campaign also promotes more respect for the match officials and seeks to stop verbal abuse and aggressive behaviour in the grassroots game.

To help raise awareness and encourage fair play, Martin Atkinson and his match officials will be wearing T-shirts supporting the 'Don’t X The Line' campaign in advance of the match at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, as will officials up and down the country at every level of football.

For more information on the campaign, visit www.dontxtheline.com.

Jesse Lingard confident Manchester United can frustrate rivals City by delaying their title party in derby clash

* Jesse Lingard is confident Manchester United can spoil City's title party
* Saturday's derby offers Pep Guardiola's men the ideal chance to wrap up the title
* City are 16 points clear of Manchester United with seven league games to go
* In-form Lingard believes United can frustrate their rivals at the Etihad Stadium

Jesse Lingard is confident Manchester United can spoil Manchester City's Premier League party this weekend.

Saturday's Manchester derby offers Pep Guardiola's men the ideal chance to make amends for the shock 3-0 loss at Liverpool in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.

It was an uncharacteristic performance from swashbuckling City, whose exquisite form is epitomised by their eye-watering 16-point lead over second-place United.

So strong is their position that victory on Saturday will see them wrap up the Premier League against their near neighbours, but in-form Lingard believes United can frustrate their rivals if they ignore the background noise.

'We have played there before and performed and did well, so I don't see why we can't do it again,' the United attacking midfielder said.

'The lads' heads have to be right and we have to 100 per cent focused on our job and get the three points because that's what we are playing for.'

Asked if it was more important because City can win the league, Lingard told Sky Sports: 'You have to see it as just a game because if you let other things come into play it might affect your performance, so you have to go into it like any other game.

'You have the lads beside you giving 100 per cent and as long as we perform on the day we can get the three points.'

Jesse Lingard is confident Manchester United can spoil City's Premier League title party

City secured a deserved 2-1 win when the sides met at Old Trafford in December but they have not beaten United at the Etihad Stadium since November 2014.

Last season Guardiola's men were held 0-0 at home and the 2015-16 meeting ended 1-0 to the visitors thanks to Marcus Rashford.

It was a special moment for a player that had only just made his first-team debut - a memory that makes the academy graduate want to stick it to City at the Etihad Stadium once more.

'The team played brilliantly that game and we deserved to win,' Rashford said.

'That feeling going away to a big team is something special. To do it together as a team, you hold it with you and it gives you the strength and motivation to continue doing it.'
