UNDER-18S: UNITED 2 MAN CITY 2

Under-18 Premier League | Aon Training Complex | Scorers: Gribbin 45, Buffonge 81 | Diaz 74, Foden 84

Manchester United and Manchester City fought out an entertaining mini-derby with a 2-2 draw meaning the visitors maintain their unbeaten record.

The two top sides in the northern division went toe to toe with Callum Gribbin and DJ Buffonge scoring for Kieran McKenna's team, only for Brahim Diaz and Phil Foden to reply. Gribbin also missed a second-half penalty.

The Blues hit the outside of a post in the sixth minute through Tom Dele-Bashiru at the second attempt after he sliced his initial effort. Good work from Gribbin and Tahith Chong almost carved out a near-post opening for striker Joshua Bohui and Tyrell Warren's tackle enabled Buffonge to lash a decent drive just over the top.

Lukas Nmecha missed his kick from an opportunity for the visitors as an absorbing encounter unfolded at the Aon Training Complex with both teams working hard to unsettle well-organised defences. The game certainly opened up as the first half drew to a close with the Reds making the all-important breakthrough.

Gribbin collected a return pass from Buffonge in the closing stages of the half, expertly feinted to move into space and bent an inch-perfect finish wide of Pawel Sokol with his weaker right foot. It was a moment of class from the midfielder but City should have replied instantly in the third minute of stoppage time when Edward Francis teed up Joe Latibeaudier but the skipper prodded wide of an inviting target.

Full-backs George Tanner and Lee O'Connor switched flanks at the start of the second period and Tanner tested Sokol when his shot skipped in front of the Polish keeper but City also worked Ilias Moutha-Sebtaoui through the tricky Diaz.

The Blues hit the woodwork for a second time when Diaz's 58th-minute drive almost capped a good spell for Lee Carsley's side, after he was fed by substitute Jadon Sancho. Moutha-Sebtaoui kept out Sancho at the near post after he dribbled past O'Connor while Diaz was off target as the pressure mounted.

Out of nothing, Sokol was booked for conceding a penalty as Bohui tried to reach an O'Connor punt forward in the 70th minute but, unfortunately, Gribbin sent the spot-kick over the bar. It was a reprieve for City who soon levelled, Diaz snaking his way into the box and going through challenges by Warren and Ro-Shaun Williams to stab in.

United hit back with Buffonge breaking at speed to feed Bohui. The former Brentford forward managed to get the ball over at the second time of asking and Buffong did a swallow dive to nod past Sokol with nine minutes left to register his sixth goal of the season.

Three minutes later, Sancho again powered down the left with O'Connor seemingly injured and unable to keep pace. Callum Whelan was also bypassed by the winger and, when the ball came back off Moutha-Sebtaoui, Foden lifted the rebound high into the net for another equaliser.

The Blues had the best opportunity to win it but Moutha-Sebtaoui denied Nmecha after he was slipped through by Sancho and a draw was a fair result after a thrilling encounter.

United: Moutha-Sebtaoui; Tanner, Warren, Williams, O’Connor (Burkart 85); Whelan, Buffonge; Gribbin (Barlow 78), Gomes, Chong (Hamilton 68); Bohui. Subs not used: Fojticek, Dunne.

UNDER-18S: WEST BROM 2 UNITED 3

Under-18 Premier League | WBA Development Centre | Scorers: Forss 14, Tulloch 29 | Gomes 10 (pen), Hamilton 31, 58

Two goals from Ethan Hamilton, either side of half-time, and an Angel Gomes penalty sealed an impressive victory for Manchester United's Under-18s in an entertaining game in the Midlands, ahead of the meeting between the two clubs' first teams.

Gomes kicked off the scoring from the penalty spot on 10 minutes after Tahith Chong had been fouled.

Four minutes later the hosts were level when a swift attack undid the United defence and Marcus Forss was there to slot home.

Rayman Tulloch put the Baggies 2-1 up on 29 minutes with a cool finish following a ball in from the left, but the lead lasted just two minutes when George Tanner's cross from the right was met by Hamilton who made it 2-2.

Gomes had the chance to put the Reds back in front three minutes before the break, but he rattled the crossbar with his second spot-kick of the game following a handball in the area.

It remained end-to-end after the break, but it was the Reds who ran out winners, thanks to Hamilton's 58th-minute rasping effort from outside the box.

Remarkable trophy triumph for young Reds

Manchester United's youngsters pulled off the most remarkable of triumphs in the Sparkasse & VGH Cup five-a-side tournament in Germany.

Kieran McKenna's side won the Under-19 indoor competition in the club's first entry into the event, despite losing goalkeeper Ilias Moutha-Sebtaoui to injury midway through the four-day programme.

That loss meant Angel Gomes and Callum Whelan - a penalty shoot-out hero in the final, scoring and saving spot-kicks - were forced to don the gloves as the Reds prevailed by overcoming Hannover in the final.

On Thursday, United opened with convincing wins over JSG Hainberg (6-0) and JSG Nieste (3-0) to signal the team's intent. Although there was a 2-1 defeat to Mainz, JSG Weper were hammered 8-1 and a 4-2 win over Gottingen was achieved despite the Moutha-Sebtaoui injury. A 2-2 draw with Schalke, 4-2 success over Austria Vienna and 4-2 victory against Hamburg followed.

In the last eight, PSV Eindhoven were dismissed 4-1 with Aidan Barlow, Angel Gomes, Indy Boonen and Nishan Burkart on the mark, before Wolfsburg were beaten 3-1 in the semi-finals thanks to goals by Josh Bohui, George Tanner and Tahith Chong to set up the key clash with Hannover on Sunday afternoon.

Following a 2-2 draw, with Bohui and Burkart scoring, there was a lengthy penalty shoot-out in which Barlow was the only Red not to score with the unusual situation of the players, including the two keepers, taking multiple efforts. Eventually, Whelan made a second save to seal a 12-11 victory on penalties.

The United camp celebrated winning a trophy - the first of McKenna's tenure - as the organisers described the Reds as "deserved and historic tournament winners". Congratulations to the young Reds!

UNDER-18S: MANCHESTER UNITED 1 EVERTON 1

Under-18 Premier League | Aon Training Complex | Scorers: Gomes 20; Ball 68

Manchester United's Under-18s were denied victory in the team's first league fixture of 2017 as Everton recovered from conceding a stunning Angel Gomes goal to take home a point through Charlie Ball's second-half equaliser.

The Reds missed a golden opportunity to go 2-0 up shortly after the break when Gomes's penalty was saved by Toffees goalkeeper Ben Pierce but the eventual 1-1 draw was nevertheless not a bad result when the visitors' superior match fitness is taken into account.

Everton arrived at the Aon Training Complex with two competitive games under their belts in January - last weekend's derby defeat and their midweek FA Youth Cup exit at Preston - whereas Kieran McKenna's United squad had not played an eleven-a-side fixture since winning at West Bromwich Albion on 17 December.

The young Reds were fresher for the first half though and with a spring in their step after winning a five-a-side tournament in Germany earlier this month. One of the stars of that success, Tahith Chong, presented a threat to Everton that was met with some exuberant resistance.

Strong challenges from Toffees left-back Luke Moore twice left the former Feyenoord youngster needing a lengthy spell of treatment during the first half. The right-sided midfielder recovered from the first one swiftly enough to race down the opposite flank, United's left, and pull back a sumptuous ball that deserved to be swept home but was instead steered to safety by Everton.

The breakthrough came in the Reds' next attack, in the 20th minute, when the lively DJ Buffonge received George Tanner's short throw-in on the right, twisted past his marker and slid a ball into the feet of Angel Gomes on the edge of the area. The no.10 still had a bit to do to make the space for a shot and he did just that by jinking to his right before lashing an unstoppable strike in off the crossbar.

It was Gomes's 10th league goal of the season and arguably his best so far, although a compilation of them all will doubtless turn that into an interesting debate on MUTV and ManUtd.com.

The creator of United's exquisite goal had a go at scoring one himself just before the half-hour mark but Buffonge's effort, after surging forward from the centre circle, took a slight deflection and the relieved Everton goalkeeper Pierce watched it whistle past his right-hand post.

Having gamely soldiered on, Chong reluctantly left the field in the 34th minute with Aidan Barlow coming on in his place. The unforced change failed to disrupt United however and the Reds almost doubled the advantage when central striker Josh Bohui headed over from Tanner's right-wing cross.

At the other end, Everton's left winger Danny Bramall crossed into the six-yard box where it was volleyed over by a team-mate and later drew a foul that had United defender Jake Kenyon entering the book.

Barlow had a curling shot saved by Pierce but the momentum at the tail end of the first half was otherwise with the visitors. Fortunately for the Reds, Everton's injury-time setpieces found centre-backs Lee O'Connor and Tyrell Warren on full alert as they headed clear.

That period was a sign of the shift to come in the balance of play and Merseyside's Blues began the second half by almost equalising, straight from the restart. A great cross reached Fraser Hornby inside the six-yard box but the no.10's first touch was too heavy and enabled United goalkeeper Alex Fojticek to smother the ball at the near post.

Everton were almost punished for that failure when Pierce brought down Reds striker Josh Bohui in the box but although the Everton shot-stopper was booked, he had the last laugh by diving to his left and pushing away Gomes's 52nd-minute penalty.

The Toffees had raised their general tempo with Bramall in particular running at the Reds' rearguard but the game had briefly slowed to a walking pace when Alex Denny rolled a decisive pass forward through midfield to Charlie Ball. The substitute, who shares his surname with one of Everton's greatest-ever players Alan Ball, turned inside O'Connor and planted a left-footed shot beyond the diving Fojticek.

Scored in the 68th minute, Ball's effort proved to be enough to secure an away draw for his side, despite United substitute Zak Dearnley coming on to deliver some decent crosses into the area.

Everton's hard-earned point was almost snatched away from them deep into stoppage time, however, when Kenyon fired a great ball in from the left wing but Buffonge was unable to get his volley on target and this entertaining affair ended all-square.

United: Fojtíček; Tanner, Warren, O’Connor, Kenyon; Whelan, Buffonge; Chong (Barlow 34), Gomes, Boonen (Dearnley 69); Bohui (Burkart 78). Subs not used: M. Johnstone, Hamilton.

UNDER-18S: SUNDERLAND 2 MANCHESTER UNITED 5

Under-18 Premier League | Academy of Light | Scorers: Bohui 19, Barlow 35, Burkart 48, Hamilton 50, Dearnley 67; Kimpioka 26, Young 85

Manchester United's Under-18s claimed a first victory of the calendar year in impressive style on Saturday, with five different players finding the net against Sunderland.

Kieran McKenna's lads were hoping to get their title challenge back on track, after losing some ground to the other contenders seven days ago, and there can be no doubt that they succeeded with something to spare at the Academy of Light.

It was an important victory for the young Reds, who had been leapfrogged last weekend when Liverpool won 1-0 at home to Newcastle United whilst Manchester City had maintained their grip on pole position with a convincing 5-2 away success against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Unbeaten in 11 matches, United players had every reason to approach the fixture with a spring in their step. Sunderland had only avoided defeat twice in nine games on their own patch this season, while the Reds had only failed on three occasions to get some reward from their eight games on the road. But nothing can be taken for granted in football and the opening minutes of this game proved that point.

Sunderland certainly defied their position at the foot of the table as the game unfolded and might have claimed a couple of early goals. However, United soon settled down and scored the game’s first goal in the 19th minute when Nishan Burkart set up Joshua Bohui to fire home from close range.

The Black Cats were quick to reply and within seven minutes they had equalised through Benji Kimpioka. There was very little in the match by this stage, but the Reds regained the lead ten minutes before the break thanks to Aidan Barlow’s well-struck shot.

It would be fair to say that it was hard to predict who was going to win the contest based on the first half, but within six minutes of the restart there was little doubt of the outcome. First it was Nishan Burkart who planted one in the Sunderland net from distance and soon after Ethan Hamilton made it 4-1 to United with an angled drive.

McKenna sent on Tom Sang and Zachary Dearnley in the 64th minute and this double substitution proved inspirational three minutes later. Sang's raking pass found Dearnley wide on the left and the latter raced forward to claim United's fifth goal.

Sunderland defender Jacob Young headed in a late goal for the hosts, but by then the Reds had well and truly secured the points.

United: Fojtíček; Tanner, Barrett, O’Connor, Spratt; Whelan (Sang 64), Hamilton (Ercolani 70); Boonen, Barlow, Bohui; Burkart (Dearnley 64). Substitutes not used: M. Johnstone, Gomes.

ANOTHER FIVE-STAR SHOW DESPITE CHONG BLOW

Manchester United's Under-18s shrugged off the loss of Tahith Chong to a serious knee injury by thumping Sunderland 5-2 at the weekend.

The free-scoring youngsters will be deprived of the services of the talented Dutch prospect, after he was hurt against Everton, but a much-changed side beat the Black Cats on their home turf, scoring five in a game for the fifth time this season.

Watch as Nishan Burkart displays lightning pace down the right flank to set up Josh Bohui's opener and, after the Reds are pegged back, Aidan Barlow's free-kick restores the lead before the break.

Burkart added a third from distance and Ethan Hamilton made it 4-1 by charging through to slip in a splendid solo effort. Zak Dearnley got in on the act with a fine finish and, despite conceding a second goal, United clinched an impressive win on the road.

"It was a pleasing morning's work," Kieran McKenna told MUTV. "The new boys coming in were making a good impression in a good performance.

"The story of the season really has been the goals not coming from only one source. It's been all the forwards who play. It's good to see Zak Dearnley back in from injury and getting a goal as well.

"Tahith has sustained quite a serious knee injury, unfortunately, but he's a fantastic lad, a big talent and a good character. We wish him all the best and have no doubt he'll come back stronger and better than ever."

UNDER-18S: ALTRINCHAM 2 MANCHESTER UNITED 1

Friendly Match | J Davidson Stadium | Scorers: Hannigan 19, Sedoc 58; Gomes 47

Kieran McKenna’s Manchester United Academy team took a break from the league programme to face a strong Altrincham side in a friendly match at the J Davidson Stadium on Tuesday evening.

The young Reds put on a highly creditable performance against a considerably older and more experienced set of players and equalised through Angel Gomes before losing narrowly in a closely-contested game.

Rain was forecast for this corner of Greater Manchester and it proved to be accurate with the wet stuff cascading onto the scene as the game got under way.

Altrincham, who are currently in a precarious position at the foot of English football's sixth tier, Vanarama National League North, started the game with the majority of their first team on duty, whilst United were represented by a selection close to that which won 5-2 at Sunderland three days earlier with the notable addition of Reserves centre-back Regan Poole in defence.

Something in the region of 200 hardy fans had braved the deluge to attend the game and it was the home supporters who were celebrating in the 19th minute when Tom Hannigan scored with a glancing header from Andy McWilliams' assist.

Sam Heathcote almost increased the home side’s advantage on the half-hour, but United’s goalkeeper Alex Fojtíček did well to prevent the shot from finding net. Two minutes later and the Reds looked to have found the equaliser, but Josh Bohui was ruled to have been in an offside position.

The United players opened the second half looking like they meant business and within two minutes they were on level terms after Gomes, the club's leading goalscorer at Under-18 level this season, had curled a shot past Altrincham keeper Tim Deasy.

The relentless rain continued to drench the J Davidson Stadium, but the atrocious conditions didn’t prevent the Robins' Diego Sedoc from lobbing his side back into the lead in the 58th minute.

The Reds almost grabbed a last-gasp equaliser following an almighty scramble in the Altrincham goalmouth, but the home side defended heroically to preserve their lead.

United: Fojtíček; Tanner, Warren, Poole, O’Connor; Mcintosh-Buffonge (Sang 87), Whelan, Hamilton (Barlow 72), Dearnley (Boonen 46); Gomes; Bohui.

Substitutes not used: Dunne, M. Johnstone (GK), Barrett, Spratt, Diedrick-Roberts.

UNDER-18S MATCH REPORT: UNITED 3 WOLVES 0

Under-18 Premier League | Aon Training Complex | Scorers: Gomes 65, Bohui 86, Dearnley 90+4

Manchester United’s flourishing Under-18s are now unbeaten in 13 matches after securing a deserved 3-0 victory over a stubborn, well-disciplined Wolverhampton Wanderers side.

Angel Gomes, Joshua Bohui and Zak Dearnley all netted second-half goals to decide this closely-fought Premier League North fixture, in which the Reds showed admirable patience to earn three points.

The early stages of the game - which was played beneath the surprisingly warm winter sun at the Aon Training Complex - were more than competitive with both sides registering shots at goal. Indy Boonen ambitiously hit a shot over the bar on 24 minutes after good approach play by Gomes, before Josh Hesson brushed the post with a rasping effort from distance on 28 minutes.

Combative midfielder Ethan Hamilton was agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock a moment later, on 29 minutes, when his powerful shot from the edge of the penalty area somehow bounced off both the right and left posts before falling into the grateful arms of the goalkeeper. The referee, unaided by goalline technology at this level, decided it had not crossed the line for a goal.

United appeared to grow in confidence as the first half played out and the young Reds almost bagged an excellent opener when Hamilton showed his skill to flick a short pass out wide to Boonen, who drove forward up the left wing and dragged a low shot just wide of the far post.

Kieran McKenna’s young team, watched from the touchline by Jimmy Murphy Junior, the son of Sir Matt Busby’s iconic former assistant manager, stepped up the pace at the start of the second half and diminutive playmaker Gomes brought a good save out of Rory Brown on 54 minutes, just prior to Bohui then hitting a right-footed effort that flew past the target from a tight angle.

Lee O’Connor was harshly booked on the hour mark and that led to a free-kick from which Wolves youngster Elliot Watt dispatched an impressive 30-yard effort that arched wide of goal. At the other end, Bohui then forced another top-notch save from the visiting goalkeeper with a close-range shot.

United deservedly took the lead on 65 minutes through Gomes, who received the ball on the left wing just inside the Wolves half and cut inside to dispatch a right-footed finish from the edge of the penalty area to find the bottom-right corner. It is his 11th goal of an increasingly eye-catching season.

The Reds doubled the advantage on 86 minutes when substitute Dearnley did really well to win a bouncing ball inside the Wolves area, before playing a good ball across the goal for Bohui to finish.

Fresh from that assist, Dearnley then grabbed a goal of his own with an excellent volley four minutes into added time, wrapping up a solid victory for the Under-18s at the Aon Training Complex.

United: Fojticek, Tanner, Kenyon, Dunne, O'Connor, Whelan, Boonen, Hamilton, Burkart, Gomes, Bohui.
Subs used: Dearnley, Barlow, Sang
Subs not used: Barret, Johnstone.
Booked: O’Connor

Default Re: Man United U-18 Matches 2016/17

U18S: MANCHESTER UNITED 4 NEWCASTLE UNITED 0

Under-18 Premier League | J. Davidson Stadium | Scorers: Dearnley 6, Barlow 59, 67 pen., 80

Aidan Barlow scored a second-half hat-trick as United Under-18s preserved their 14-match undefeated league sequence and ensured a top-four finish with another fine home victory.

Barlow's triple plus an early strike from Zachary Dearnley gave Kieran McKenna's young Reds a comfortable win and guaranteed them a place in the top group when the competition enters its second stage next month.

It was a bitterly cold evening at Altrincham's J. Davidson Stadium, but the credit has to go to the Robins’ groundsman and his staff for the pitch was in pristine condition.

Snow had been threatening for much of the afternoon in South Manchester and just as the teams took the field quite heavy snow started to fall from the sky. It was a certainly wintry scene as the game started but the home team ignored the white stuff to start the contest in typically sprightly fashion.

Newcastle, wearing a change strip of black shirts with gold trim, also looked lively from the off, but they couldn’t prevent the Reds from moving into the lead in the 6th minute through a peach of a goal. Jake Kenyon provided an inch-perfect pass to Dearnley, who accepted the invitation to score with a cracking finish.

It was a promising start from McKenna's attacking side and they could easily have gone in at the break with a more commanding lead after creating a string of decent chances. With a stroke of luck, Nishan Burkart, Ethan Hamilton and Barlow could all have added their name to the first-half scoresheet.

The Reds eventually increased their lead in the 59th minute when Barlow finally put the ball over the line, in off Newcastle keeper Ben Smith, following a scramble in the goalmouth.

Eight minutes later and the hosts as good as secured the points when Barlow claimed his second goal of the night, from the penalty spot after he had been felled in the area.

Barlow completed his hat-trick ten minutes from time to round off another high-scoring triumph for the second-placed Reds, who have now netted at least four goals in a game on nine occasions in this exciting season.

United: Fojticek; Tanner, Warren, Dunne, Kenyon; Whelan, Hamilton; Dearnley (Sang 69), Barlow (Ercolani 90), Bohui (Spratt 83); Burkart. Substitutes not used: Barrett, Johnstone M.
