Edwin eyes top spot

Edwin van der Sar is keen to see United secure top spot in Champions League Group C on Tuesday night.
The Reds welcome Valencia to Old Trafford for the final group match knowing that anything other than a defeat will be enough to advance to the knockout stages as group winners and, consequently, avoid the other groups' winners in the last 16.

Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona, plus United’s conquerors last season, Bayern Munich, have already secured top spot in their respective groups and van der Sar is fully aware of the importance of steering clear of Europe’s elite.

“We may be through now but we want to get to first spot to avoid any of the big teams in the earlier rounds. That’s what we need to do on Tuesday,” said the Dutchman.

United have yet to concede a goal in this season’s Champions League and will become the first side to do so throughout an entire group stage if they manage to keep a clean sheet against Valencia.

Van der Sar, responsible for three of the five clean sheets this term, is naturally pleased with the record, however he's aware there are much tougher challenges to come for the Reds.

“When you start playing a higher standard of opposition it’s going to get difficult,” he said.

“So far we haven’t played against the biggest teams in the Champions League so that’s maybe got something to do with it.”

Match Pack: Valencia

Form guide
United’s 1-0 win against Valencia at the Mestalla in September, through a late strike from Javier Hernandez, started a run of four consecutive Champions League victories. Back-to-back wins against Bursaspor were followed by a 1-0 win over Rangers at Ibrox, to leave the Reds on the brink of securing top spot in the group. Valencia may have suffered a slump in form in La Liga since that defeat – winning just three of their last nine matches – but they have bounced back superbly in the Champions League. A 1-1 draw at Rangers, followed by a 3-0 win in the reverse fixture and a 6-1 hammering of Bursaspor, have taken the Spanish outfit into the last 16 relatively convincingly, and they have an outside chance of snatching top spot from the Reds, needing a win by any score at Old Trafford.

Ins and outs
Sir Alex Ferguson is set to make wholesale changes to the side that lost for the first time this season at West Ham in the Carling Cup. Aware of the significance of going through to the knockout stage as group winners, the boss is unlikely to leave much to chance, especially after the postponement of Saturday’s match at Blackpool. Edwin van der Sar, Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra and Rafael are all in line for a recall at the back while Nani, Ji-sung Park, Dimitar Berbatov and Wayne Rooney are also poised to feature in the starting 11. Paul Scholes should be in contention as well, having missed the last two games with a groin strain.

Star man
Despite only having four league goals to his name this season, Roberto Soldado has been in inspired form in front of goal in the Champions League. The 25-year-old arrived at Valencia over the summer with a weight on his shoulders after being signed as the replacement for star striker David Villa, who left Los Che to join Spanish champions Barcelona. However, the former Real Madrid man seems to be handling the pressure well, having bagged five goals on the European stage, including doubles in Valencia’s two most recent matches.

Manager
Since taking over the reigns at Valencia at the end of the 2008/09 season, Unai Emery has steadily gone onto establish Los Che as the side most capable of challenging the big two in Spain, Barcelona and Real Madrid. After guiding Valencia to Europa League qualification in his first season in charge, Emery took them one step further last season by claiming third spot in La Liga and a much coveted place in this season’s Champions League.

Referee
Lisbon-born financial director Pedro Proença is the man in the middle on Tuesday. This is the 40-year-old's first United game but he has officiated three other Champions League matches this season, most recently Real Madrid's 2-0 win over AC Milan.

Rivals watch
Rangers are away at Bursaspor on Tuesday, while Tottenham travel to FC Twente knowing a win will guarantee them top spot in Group A ahead of holders Inter Milan. On Wednesday, Chelsea face a trip to Marseille as they aim to make it six wins out of six in Group F, and Arsenal host Partizan Belgrade needing a victory to ensure their progression to the knockout stages. All games kick off at 19:45 GMT.

Manchester United one clean sheet away from record
By Sonia Oxley
MANCHESTER, England | Mon Dec 6, 2010 2:08am GMT

(Reuters) - Manchester United will become the first team to go through the Champions League group stage without conceding a goal if they can keep a clean sheet at home to free-scoring Valencia on Tuesday.
Their tight defence in European games has been in contrast to erratic domestic performances at the back and has often been down to promising displays by some of their younger players, who look likely to be given the responsibility once again.

United and Valencia have already qualified for the knockout round although top spot in Group C is still up for grabs. The English club, who have 13 points from five games, will win the group if they do not lose to the Spaniards, who are on 10.

With United facing important Premier League matches against leaders Arsenal and champions Chelsea in the next fortnight, manager Alex Ferguson's policy of giving his youngsters a run-around in Europe looks set to continue.

"We have some fantastic young players at the back," 31-year-old Wes Brown, whose place in defence has sometimes been taken by the new crop, told the club magazine Inside United.

"You could play a good back five with some of them in there; Ben Amos in goal, Rafael at right back, Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling in the centre and Fabio at left back. That is the next generation."

While the gamble to experiment has paid off in the Champions League, a youthful United side came crashing down to earth last week when the holders lost 4-0 to West Ham United in the League Cup to end a 29-match unbeaten run in all competitions.

FEWEST NUMBER

Six clubs currently hold the record for the fewest number of goals conceded in the Champions League group stage. Ajax Amsterdam, Chelsea, Juventus (twice), Liverpool, AC Milan and Villarreal share the honour with one goal.

United got some extra rest this week as Saturday's league game at Blackpool was postponed because of a frozen pitch, while Valencia's preparations have been less than ideal.

They are still smarting from Saturday's 2-0 defeat at Real Madrid when a harsh second yellow card for midfielder David Albelda left them with a man less for the last 25 minutes.

Up to then they had held Jose Mourinho's side, causing them problems by crowding the midfield and breaking quickly. The extra space worked in Cristiano Ronaldo's favour and the former Manchester United forward scored twice in the closing stages.

They were, however, boosted by news goalkeeper Cesar Sanchez had been included in the squad for the trip to northwest England. The first-choice keeper has been sidelined since last month with a calf injury but trained with the team on Sunday.

Valencia, fifth in La Liga, travel to watertight United with one of the most potent strike forces, having scored 14 times in their five Champions League matches.
