Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admits Juan Mata's Man United future is still up in the air but insists 'he's got the quality' to stay at the club... but veteran midfielder has started just four league games this season

* Juan Mata's contract at Manchester United expires at the end of the season
* He has played 10 times for United this term, including four starts in the league
* Mata has fallen way down the pecking order at Old Trafford over the past year

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has admitted that Juan Mata's future at Manchester United remains uncertain.

Mata's contract at Old Trafford expires in June although United do have the option to extend it for a further year.

The 32-year-old midfielder has made 10 appearances this season with only four starts coming in the Premier League.

With the arrival of Donny van de Beek, Mata has found himself way down the pecking order and hasn't featured in any of United's last four league games despite being on the bench.

Solskjaer hasn't confirmed Mata will leave in the summer but has said it is difficult to fit him into his plans.

He said: 'The decision is very difficult every time with Juan. You know he's got the quality. If he plays, he scores goals, he's contributed this season.

Juan Mata's deal at Manchester United expires in June but the club have an option to extend it. United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has admitted Mata's future at the club remains uncertain

'Then again, we've had other players who have taken his role as well - Mason [Greenwood] has done well in that position, Paul [Pogba] now, and Juan really contributes in and around the group.

'So it's one of those that I have discussions with all the time, it's difficult to leave him out but unfortunately that's where it is at the moment, so no decision has been made there yet.'

Mata's options away from Manchester include a possible return to Valencia, where he played for four years before moving to Chelsea in 2011, or a move to the Middle East or China.

Juan Mata's mother Marta Garcia 'passes away after long-term battle with illness' as Manchester United team-mates and close friends share touching messages of support

* Reports in Spain have said Juan Mata's mother, Marta, has sadly passed away
* Marta is understood to have battled with a long-term illness for several months
* Mata revealed in 2019 that he would speak to his mother before and after games
* A number of Manchester United team-mates have shared their love and support

Juan Mata's mother has passed away following a lengthy battle with illness, according to reports from Spain.

Publication La Nueva Espana have reported on Monday that Marta Garcia died after suffering from poor health for several months.

The tragic news has not officially been confirmed by Manchester United's Mata, but a number of team-mates expressed their love and support on social media.

Marta had two children - Mata, 32, and his sister, Paula.

She has been warmly described by the press in Spain as a 'very dear, good and loving person'.

Bruno Fernandes posted a photo on Instagram of him and Mata enjoying an embrace on the field.

Juan Mata's mother, Marta Garcia, has reportedly died after a long-term battle with illness. Marta (centre) had two children and was known to be very close to Manchester United's Mata. Mata told United's website that he would regularly speak to his mother before and after games

'Friend, a very strong hug for you and your family,' the caption read.

Fellow Spain international David de Gea also uploaded a snap with Mata and accompanied it with a love heart.

Ander Herrera, the former United midfielder now at Paris Saint-Germain, shared a picture of himself chatting with Mata at Old Trafford earlier this season.

Underneath, he wrote the term 'siempre', which translates into English as 'forever'.

Mata held a close relationship with his mother and has spoken about his matchday rituals involving her to United's club website.

He revealed that Marta would often text him during games and wait for him to read it at full-time.

They would also speak to each other over the phone before matches.

'My mother has always been more worried about my physical wellbeing during a match than the result,' Mata said two years ago.

'That's why, even now, I always call her when I'm on the coach on the way to the stadium. Always.

'It's a ritual that we both enjoy, and which is also an extra source of motivation for me. "Be careful. Enjoy, shoot... and try not to get hurt," are always her words.

'My mother is undoubtedly a key figure in my life.

'I will always do everything that's in my hands to make her happy. She deserves it more than anyone else.'

Juan Mata 'set to earn a surprise new 12-month deal at Manchester United' with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer keen to retain services of 'highly respected and experienced' midfielder at Old Trafford despite lack of playing time

* Juan Mata joined from Chelsea in 2014 for a then club-record £37.1million
* The midfielder has gone on to play 267 times for the club, scoring 50 goals
* He's struggled for game-time this season, starting just four times in the league
* He was expected to be released on a free transfer at the end of the season

Juan Mata is in line to earn a one-year contract extension at Manchester United despite limited game time at the club.

The Spanish midfielder has been at Old Trafford since January 2014 when David Moyes bought him from Chelsea for a then club-record fee of £37.1million.

The 32-year-old was a regular in his first few years at United and even played 37 times last season, but he's seen his opportunities diminish this season, playing just 12 times across all competitions.

He was expected to be released on a free transfer, but according to the Daily Star, United have decided to trigger a one-year extension that will allow them to sell him, with the Spaniard believed to be valued at around £5m.

Juan Mata is set to earn a surprise new 12-month contract extension at Manchester United. The midfielder has struggled for game time this season, starting just four times in the league

It's a situation that works for both club and player. Mata is thought to be a highly respected and experienced player in the dressing room, and he has business interests in Manchester, including owning a restaurant.

It means Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's juggling act will continue in an already packed midfield. Donny van de Beek has only started twice in the league this season, while Jesse Lingard will be looking to force his way back in to the side after his recent form for West Ham.

Juan Mata facing an uncertain future with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitting no decision has been made with his Man United contract up NEXT MONTH... and ex-Chelsea star could leave

* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revealed no decision has been made on Juan Mata's future
* The Spaniard's contract at Old Trafford expires at the end of next month
* But the United boss has insisted it is up for Mata to decide what he wants to do

Juan Mata's future at Manchester United is still up in the air, says manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Mata will be out of contract at the end of next month and the 33-year-old Spaniard is in talks with the club over his next move.

Mata has only made seven appearances this year and was given compassionate leave before his mother passed away at the end of March.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has admitted Juan Mata's Manchester United future is still uncertain. The 33-year-old's contract at Old Trafford runs out next month but no decision has been made. The United boss insisted it is for Mata to decide on his own future and what he wants to do

But Solskjaer insists that the final decision will be left with Mata, a £37.1million signing from Chelsea in January 2014.

‘I’ve kept the dialogue with Juan and we’re due to speak again very soon,’ said the United boss.

‘Of course he’s not played as much as he would like and that’s a decision we will make with him.

‘He’s in charge of his own future, he’s been such a good servant for the club. But it’s hard to leave good players and good people out of the team, and it’s about what does he want as his next step in his career.

'Is it to play his career out here or is it to go somewhere else? We haven’t made the final decision yet.’

MATA AGREES A NEW ONE-YEAR UNITED CONTRACT

Manchester United is delighted to announce Juan Mata has agreed a one-year contract, keeping him at Old Trafford until June 2022.

The 33-year-old completed a transfer from Premier League rivals Chelsea in January 2014 and has since made 273 appearances as a Red, scoring 51 goals in the process.

His impressive tally of strikes includes a memorable brace against Liverpool at Anfield in 2015 and an all-important equaliser in the victorious 2016 Emirates FA Cup final versus Crystal Palace.

Dubbed a magician on the pitch and a gentleman off it, Mata has become one of the most popular players in recent United history and he is highly respected by all of his team-mates.

The World Cup winner’s influence on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s young, improving squad is invaluable and the manager continues to be a huge supporter of the fleet-footed Spaniard.

While his 2020/21 season was limited to 18 appearances, partly due to personal circumstances, Mata’s contribution remained and he was notably one of six Reds to win our Player of the Month awards, alongside Edinson Cavani, Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford and Luke Shaw.

With a new one-year contract agreed and pre-season training about to start at Carrington, Juan is raring to go in what will be his ninth campaign at United.

Congratulations on your new deal, El Mago.

Manchester United agree a one-year contract extension with midfielder Juan Mata despite the 33-year-old only starting 10 matches last season

* Spaniard Juan Mata has extended his Old Trafford career into a ninth season

Juan Mata has agreed a new one-year contract at Manchester United, extending his Old Trafford career into a ninth season.

The 33-year-old Spaniard, who signed from Chelsea for £37.1million in January 2014, became a free agent when his contract ran out on Wednesday. But United have confirmed that Mata has signed a new deal at the club until June 2022.

A statement read: 'Manchester United is delighted to announce Juan Mata has agreed a one-year contract, keeping him at Old Trafford until June 2022.

'Dubbed a magician on the pitch and a gentleman off it, Mata has become one of the most popular players in recent United history and he is highly respected by all of his teammates.

Juan Mata has reached an agreement with Man United over a one-year contract extension. Mata made only 18 appearances last season but he scored in their final league game at Wolves

However, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer still believes Mata has a lot to offer United and values the experience of a player who won the World Cup and European Championship with Spain.

Speaking about Mata's situation in May, Solskjaer said: 'I've kept the dialogue with Juan and we're due to speak again very soon. Of course, he's not played as much as he'd like and that's a decision that we'll make with him.

'He's in charge of his own future and he's been such a good servant for the club. But of course, it's hard, as I've said so many times, to leave good players out, good people out of the team.

'It's about what does he want as his next step in his career? Is it [to] still play out his career here, or is it going somewhere else? We haven't made a final decision yet.'

Sports giant Adidas sign up to Manchester United star Juan Mata's Common Goal initiative by pledging to donate one percent of their global sales from footballs until 2023

* Adidas has agreed a two-year link-up with Juan Mata's Common Goal initiative
* The sports giants have pledged to donate 1% of their global sales from footballs
* The initiative's raised £2.6m, which has been invested in football-based charities

Sports giant Adidas has pledged one percent of global net sales from footballs to Common Goal, the initiative kickstarted by Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata.

The German-based organisation, which provides the official ball for Euro 2020, has agreed a link-up until 2023 in a huge step forward for Common Goal's project of using football to help social change around the globe.

Launched in 2017, when Mata committed to pledge one percent of his salary to a collective fund, the project can now boast almost 200 players and managers, including Italy captain Giorgio Chiellini, Denmark keeper Kasper Schmeichel, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, Chelsea's Timo Werner and former Manchester United women's manager Casey Stoney.

To date, over £2.6million has been generated and invested in football-based charities but it is hoped the support from such a recognised brand as Adidas will take its profile and message to another level.

Mata, who co-founded Common Goal with Jürgen Griesbeck and signed a new one year contract with United last week, said: 'I’ve been a part of the adidas family for many years and with Common Goal from the very beginning, so this collaboration is very special.

'This partnership will help us to use football as a force for good and come together to try and tackle social issues as one. This is really only the start. For me, team play is the most important thing and through solidarity, empathy and effort, I believe that anyone can reach their goals. Our ambition is to make Common Goal the biggest football club in the world, where everyone is welcome.'

Griesbeck added: 'This partnership with adidas represents a shift in the football industry. Social impact has moved to a high priority for football stakeholders. Adidas has shown its leadership in investing in Common Goal and together we can scale and accelerate football’s contribution towards the global goals.'

Quote:
What is Common Goal?

The Common Goal movement was created in 2017 by streetfootballworld, the world’s leading organisation in the field of football for good.

Common Goal encourages professional football players, managers, officials and clubs to donate a minimum of 1% of their earnings to support high-impact initiatives that use football to drive progress towards the Global Goals.

The movement’s long-term vision is to unlock 1% of the entire football industry’s revenues — estimated at €50 billion per year.
Adidas say the partnership is built upon shared values; using sport to improve the lives of young people around the world and have targeted 'making a positive impact on over 90,000 lives as they strive to make the game more inclusive for all'.

Projects planned include: Global Goal 5 Accelerator - creating a world where every girl has the opportunity to develop her full potential.

The Common Goal initiative was kickstarted by Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata

The Anti-Racist Project - to end racism in football: on the field, on the sidelines, in the front office and across our communities.

Play Proud - making grassroots football organisations, programmes, and communities around the world inclusive for LGBTQ+ communities.

Global Goal 16 Impact - empowering young people to shape their communities and play a key role in creating peaceful and inclusive societies.

Gonzalo Calvo, Director for Communities and Culture, at adidas, said: 'At adidas, we are committed to creating change through football. We cannot do this alone, however, and therefore look to individuals and organisations with a shared commitment to action, such as Common Goal. This is a team effort, and it was important to announce this partnership and our ambitions for it during the most collaborative and inclusive football tournament in European history. This is just the start.'

Juan Mata is 'weighing up his future at Manchester United' amid a lack of game time this season with the midfielder 'open to leaving in January'

* Juan Mata is reportedly considering his future at Manchester United
* The midfielder has not featured in the Premier League this season
* The 33-year-old is out of contract at the end of the 2021-2022 campaign
* He is said to be open to a move in January before his deal expires

Juan Mata is reportedly weighing up his future at Manchester United due to a lack of playing time this season.

The midfielder started United's Carabao Cup defeat by West Ham last week but is yet to feature in the Premier League and was left out of the squad to face Aston Villa on Saturday.

The 33-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and can negotiate a pre-contract agreement with an overseas club in January but the Manchester Evening News report that he would be open to leaving before his deal expires.

Mata, who turns 34 in April, has been with United since 2014 and has made 274 appearances for the club.

His deal was extended by a year in July with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hailing his experience and professionalism.

'We are a young squad and that's been part of the thinking,' he told Manchester United's website.

'We have the professionals that can be an example day in and day out. Our young lads think they know it because we bring the up through the Academy and they do learn good habits. But then they come into the first team and see World Cup winners like Juan and the way he conducts himself, even if he doesn't play.

'He didn't play as much as he would have liked to last year but he's never ever letting himself or his team down with his attitude.

'So [they are] good examples and Lee, as well, knows he's got good goalkeepers ahead of him but the example he sets is something we have to reward them [for] and it makes the group better, and they're still good players.'

The midfielder started his career with Real Madrid but did not make a first-team appearance before joining Valencia in 2007.

He then signed for Chelsea in 2011 and helped the club win their first ever Champions League in the following year.

Mata made the move to Old Trafford when he was signed by David Moyes for a then club record fee of £37.1million.

The midfielder has won four trophies during his time at United - the FA Cup, League Cup, Community Shield and Europa League.

Manchester United 'could offer Juan Mata a coaching role this summer' if the veteran Spanish midfielder decides to call time on his playing career at the end of the season

* Juan Mata is in the final few months of his contract at Manchester United
* The Spaniard has made just four appearances in all competitions this season
* Several Spanish sides have made enquiries over signing Mata this summer
* United though could offer him a coaching role if he decides to retire

Manchester United are reportedly considering offering Juan Mata a role on their coaching staff.

Mata, who signed for United in 2014, is in the final few months of his contract and there have been no discussions as yet over an extension.

The 33-year-old has struggled for playing time this season with just four appearances in all competitions.

The Sun have reported that the midfielder could be offered a coaching role at Old Trafford should he decide to call time on his playing career at the end of the season.

It was previously reported that his contract situation had put several Spanish clubs on alert.

A number of LaLiga sides have made enquiries over the player who was last in the league back in 2011 with Valencia.

Mata has scored 51 goals and contributed 47 assists in 277 games for United and the Spaniard, who has won the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012, still feels he can contribute at the highest level.

With United planning a shake-up behind the scenes this summer, Mata's knowledge and experience could be useful for the Red Devils.

Juan Mata could be offered a coaching role by Manchester United at the end of the season. Mata has struggled for playing time this season and is in the final few months of his contract. Mata has made four appearances this season with just two made since Ralf Rangnick arrived

He has already started taking his coaching badges and a management course, which has convinced some he should be handed a technical role.

The Sun have reported a United source has suggested that Mata can make a contribution to United in the future and could 'follow a similar pathway' as Mikel Arteta and move into management.

Mata has yet to make a Premier League appearance this season and has only featured twice under Ralf Rangnick.

Rangnick is interim manager until the end of the season when a new permanent manager is set to arrive.

Whoever the new manager at United will be, might have a say in Mata's future.

Default Re: Juan Manuel Mata García

Juan Mata 'will NOT retire at the end of the season or join Manchester United's coaching staff'... with the veteran Spaniard set to leave Old Trafford on a free transfer after eight years

* Juan Mata's contract at Manchester United runs out at the end of the season
* It has been suggested that he could retire and take up a coaching role at the club
* But the 33-year-old reportedly has no plans to call time on his playing career
* Mata has played just 177 minutes for United in all competitions this term

Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata will not retire at the end of the season or join the club's coaching staff, according to reports.

With the 33-year-old's contract expiring in the next few months, it has been suggested that he could call time on his playing career and take up a role on the sidelines at Old Trafford.

Mata has been at the club for over eight years and has made 278 appearances, but he has seen his game time decrease rapidly in recent seasons.

Yet according to Fabrizio Romano, the Spaniard has no interest in retirement this summer and has ruled out becoming a coach with United.

Juan Mata is expected to leave Manchester United when his contract expires this summer. The Spaniard has not made a single Premier League appearance for United this season. Mata, 33, says that he wants to continue playing until the age of 37 like Cristiano Ronaldo

With a new contract at Old Trafford unlikely to be forthcoming, it seems almost certain that Mata will continue his playing career away from Manchester.

It was reported last month by The Athletic that several La Liga clubs have made enquiries about him, although he may try football in a different country.

Having come through Real Madrid's academy before starting his senior career at Valencia, Mata moved to Chelsea in 2011 and then joined United two-and-a-half years later.

Brought to the club by David Moyes, the midfielder has won the Europa League, FA Cup and League Cup during his time as a Red Devil.

However he has not featured in the Premier League since the final day of last season and has only made five appearances in all competitions this campaign, amassing a total of just 177 minutes on the pitch.

In an interview with El Mundo last month, Mata was asked whether he could see himself playing until the age of 37 like Cristiano Ronaldo.

'Well, why not?' he replied. 'I love to play football. I enjoy when I am in the field or training. If my physique allows me, mentally I really want to.

'In the end, being a football player is such a beautiful profession when you love this sport that you want to practice it as long as you can. I still feel like I have something left.'
