Default Re: Paul Labile Pogba

Manchester United's big-money contract extension offer to Paul Pogba is a 'sign of desperation' for 'someone who has been in and out of the side' says Paul Ince... with superstar able to leave for free next summer

* Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba is able to leave for free next summer
* The club have tabled a contract offer but Pogba is yet to agree to the fresh terms
* Former midfielder Paul Ince says the move from United is a 'sign of desperation'
* Ince also claims the reported £400,000 a week wages for Pogba are not merited

Manchester United's latest big-money contract offer to Paul Pogba is a 'sign of desperation', according to their former midfielder Paul Ince.

Pogba will be able to leave the club on a free transfer next summer and, with the months quickly ticking down, he can also hold talks with foreign teams from January.

The likes of Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid have all been linked with a move for the superstar, although United are attempting to tie him to fresh terms.

Sportsmail has previously reported that the Old Trafford hierarchy want Pogba to sign the deal as soon as possible, a move which would protect his value.

It would provide him with a significant increase on his current £290,000-a-week contract, it is understood, and would run for a minimum of four more years.

However, Pogba is continuing to hesitate over putting pen to paper, and Ince says the extension comes as a surprise considering he doesn't start every game.

Manchester United's contract offer to Paul Pogba is a 'sign of desperation', Paul Ince believes. Former United star Ince believes the move is a surprise due to confusion over Pogba's minutes. Pogba has returned to training at United after the international break but is yet to pen terms

'That's a sign of desperation from Manchester United in offering that contract,' Ince told The United Stand.

'Obviously, they're trying to persuade him to sign this deal. It's a lot of money for someone who has been in and out of the side.

'He was on the bench two weeks ago against Everton and then all of a sudden you're saying: "Here's £400k-a-week!"

'Ultimately, if you're paying that type of money for a player, he has to play every game and we're not seeing Paul Pogba play every game.

Boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (left) has remained coy over Pogba's long-term future with United

'Where is his ideal position? Where does Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer] see him playing week in, week out? We know where Bruno Fernandes plays, that's easy enough. But where does Paul Pogba play?

'Does he play in holding midfield like he did against Wolves? Is he going to play him on the left-hand side? Is he going to put him on the bench? There's too much confusion with where Pogba's best position is.

'He was more advanced at the start of the season and his assists record has been fantastic this season. He was unbelievable against Southampton.

'But I'm looking at this and thinking, "What makes you offer Paul Pogba £400k-a-week at this precise moment?".

'He's not pulling up trees and his performances have been on and off.'

United boss Solskjaer has been coy over Pogba's future, insisting that talks with the player are 'continuing', and there is no clear sign as to his decision.

Pogba has impressed on international duty with France, having helped his country to win the Nations League after they beat Spain in the final.

He has also enjoyed a good start with United, notably for laying on seven assists in seven appearances in the Premier League so far.

'It's a pleasure to play next to him': Paul Pogba hints he would like Man United to sign Monaco star Aurelien Tchouameni, admitting he 'always' wants to play with his French international team-mate

* Aurelien Tchouameni has impressed as a stand-in for N'Golo Kante for France
* He played alongside Paul Pogba in the country's Nations League final win
* Manchester United star Pogba is a big fan of the 21-year-old Monaco midfielder
* Pogba has claimed he 'always' wants to play with the 'extraordinary' Tchouameni

Manchester United star Paul Pogba has stated he 'always' wants to play 'by the side' of his French international team-mate Aurelien Tchouameni.

The 21-year-old Monaco star is one of the most in-demand youngsters in Europe presently with the clubs including Real Madrid, Chelsea and Juventus all reportedly interested.

Pogba started alongside Tchouameni in France's Nations League final against Spain on Sunday, helping Didier Deschamps side come from behind to win the tournament.

The United star has hinted that he would like his present club to sign his 'extraordinary' international team-mate.

Asked about Tchouameni, Pogba told RTL as per the Metro: 'Very, very good. He’s not a boy, he’s a man.

‘It’s a pleasure to play next to him. He brings a lot of energy. A lot of energy, extraordinary technical and physical quality.

Manchester United star Paul Pogba is a big fan of France team-mate Aurelien Tchouameni. Tchouameni stood in for N'Golo Kante alongside Paul Pogba in the Nations League final. Tchouameni and Pogba helped inspire France to come from behind to win the trophy

‘We wish him to play a lot more games and that I am always by his side.’

Tchouameni has enjoyed a flying start to the season with Monaco and has filled in very well for N'Golo Kante alongside Pogba in midfield for his country.

It was previously reported that Madrid have identified the 21-year-old as a key target for next summer alongside upcoming free agent Kylian Mbappe.

There is a lot of interest in Tchouameni who has impressed for Ligue 1 side Monaco

Madrid believe he can offer competition to Casemiro while Chelsea are interested and are believed to see him as a potential Kante replacement.

There could be a fierce race for Tchouameni, who was named the Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year last season and was also picked in the Ligue 1 Team of the Year.

Tchouameni has played 15 times for Monaco this season, scoring twice. He also has five caps for France.

Default Re: Paul Labile Pogba

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer still can't solve the Paul Pogba riddle... after dropping the Frenchman for Atalanta win, is the Manchester United manager really any closer to knowing his best team?

* Paul Pogba didn't set the world alight for Man United after coming on vs Atalanta
* The Frenchman has struggled for form in recent weeks and was named on bench
* He came on before United mounted a comeback, but he didn't change the game
* It is clear Ole Gunnar Solskjaer does not trust Pogba but has other problems too

Paul Pogba didn’t pull any punches in the wake of Manchester United’s lame surrender at Leicester on Saturday.

Fronting up to the television cameras, the Frenchman called for something to change at United.

‘We need to find what’s the problem,’ said Pogba solemnly.

‘You need to find the right mentality, the right tactic to win these games. That’s my thought. We have time to think about it and then all together, we have to stick together and find the problem. We need to find something, we need to change something.’

Paul Pogba remains a problem for Manchester United after coming on against Atalanta. United mounted a comeback to win 3-2, but it would be wrong to say he changed the game

After four days looking for the problem, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer found it. Turns out he thought it was Paul Pogba.

It felt like Solskjaer needed to make a statement after United’s defeat at the King Power Stadium, and the one he chose was to drop Pogba to the bench against Atalanta on Wednesday night.

There were certainly no complaints in the BT Sport studio. ‘It’s a big, big game for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his lack of trust in Pogba is evident,’ observed Peter Crouch.

‘I think he has tried to trust him, he clearly wants to,’ added Paul Scholes. ‘But he has seen the lack of discipline; he will be disappointed.’

Pogba went missing at Leicester and not for the first time in a defensive midfield role that just doesn’t come naturally to him.

It is a damning indictment of United – and Pogba – that six years after his return from Juventus they have still to find his best position.

When Gary Neville talks about this being an ‘odd bunch’, Pogba is Exhibit A; a key figure in France’s World Cup and Nations League winning teams but a perennial under-achiever for his club.

The Frenchman said United had to 'find the problem' after losing to Leicester and his boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer decided the problem was him. Solskjaer does not appear to trust Pogba at present and is yet to find his best position. Pogba was introduced in the 60th minute but his coach will have learned little from his display. Pogba is not the only issue in the team, which is one capable of being woefully bad

He has been most effective for Solskjaer playing wide on the left but that has denied one of United’s growing band of wingers – Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood, Anthony Martial, Jesse Lingard and Amad Traore at the last count – a place in this team.

Rashford’s goal-scoring return from injury at Leicester was enough to persuade Solskjaer to bench Pogba here. To play a winger on the wing and return to his comfort blanket of Scott McTominay and Fred in defensive midfield against the dangerous Italians.

Did it work? Not really. They were two down inside half an hour and looked every bit as shambolic as they were at the weekend. Time and again they ran down blind alleys, resorting to hopeful long balls as the frustration grew inside Old Trafford.

Pogba’s replacement McTominay went to sleep when Davide Zappacosta crossed for Mario Pasalic to open the scoring, and was muscled out of the way when Merih Demiral headed the second.

Rashford pulled one back before Pogba replaced McTominay in the 66th minute. It would be wrong to say that he turned the game, but the facts show that United scored twice in the next 15 minutes.

So where does that leave Solskjaer three days before Liverpool arrive at Old Trafford? What did he actually learn here?

The truth is probably not very much. United remain a group of talented individuals who can turn games like this around in sensational fashion, but also a team capable of being woefully bad.

Does Solskajer restore Pogba to the midfield or go with the tandem they call McFred once again? Does he put him back on the left at the expense of an attacking player? On this evidence, he might as well pick a team blindfolded.

On another dramatic Champions League night at Old Trafford, we at least learned that Pogba isn’t the only problem.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 'doesn't trust' Paul Pogba in Manchester United's central midfield, insists Paul Scholes after Frenchman is DROPPED for Fred for crunch Champions League tie against Atalanta

* Paul Pogba was dropped for Manchester United's home tie against Atalanta
* Fred was chosen by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to partner Scott McTominay in midfield
* Paul Scholes believes Pogba has had chances to impress in a deeper position
* But ultimately his inability to show discipline there has cost him his place

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has run out of patience with Paul Pogba and no longer trusts him to play in central midfield for Manchester United, according to Paul Scholes.

The 28-year-old was dropped from the starting XI by the Norwegian for the crunch Champions League group match against Atalanta at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

Fellow midfielder Fred was named as Scott McTominay's midfield partner ahead of Pogba, following the latter's disappointing performance in the 4-2 defeat by Leicester at the weekend.

And United midfield great Scholes believes Solskjaer has handed Pogba several chances to impress in a deeper position, but ultimately his inability to show discipline there has cost him.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (R) no longer trusts Paul Pogba (L) in centre midfield, claims Paul Scholes. Pogba delivered a sub-par display for Manchester United in the defeat at Leicester on Saturday. Pogba was left out of the side against Atalanta, with Fred partnering Scott McTominay. Scholes believes Pogba's inability to show discipline in central midfield has cost him. Peter Crouch insists the lack of trust in the World Cup-winner is 'obvious' and 'evident'

'He [Solskjaer] just does not trust him [Pogba] in that position,' Scholes told BT Sport ahead of the Group F encounter.

'I think he has tried to trust him, he has given him so many chances and he really wants to, but he is seeing the lack of discipline he has in that position.

'It could cost them dearly and tonight is such an important game for him [Solskjaer].

'Lack of trust in a player is not good. He [Pogba] will be disappointed but he has to get over it and fight back.'

Fellow BT Sport pundit Peter Crouch agreed with Scholes, insisting the lack of trust in the World Cup-winning midfielder is 'obvious' and 'evident'.

'It [dropping Pogba] will get big headlines, but it is obvious he cannot trust him,' Crouch added.

'This is a big, big game for him [Solskjaer] and I think he rather he would have played Liverpool to be honest, because I think they will have more of the ball tonight, and they are expected to win.

'His lack of trust in Pogba is evident, he can trust Fred and McTominay to be disciplined, it is a big, big game for Solskjaer.'

Pogba's omission comes after he criticised his own team-mates following their defeat at the King Power Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

'If we want to win the title, these are the games we need to win, even if they are very hard,' Pogba said after the game.

'We have been having these kind of games for a long time and haven't found the problem. We have conceded easy and stupid goals.

'We need to find the key for this change because we deserved to lose.

'I don't know if it is the mindset of the players. We need to change something.

'We need to find the mentality and tactics to win. We have to look as individuals and as a team to fix this.'

Paul Pogba hails Manchester United for showing great 'character' in their comeback win against Atalanta and insists 'you could feel the belief and the positive energy' at Old Trafford

* Man United came back from 2-0 down to beat Atalanta 3-2 on Wednesday night
* Paul Pogba believes Man United showed their true character by bouncing back
* The Frenchman says it was a 'great result' despite not starting the game well
* He said that 'you could feel the belief and the positive energy just on the pitch'

Paul Pogba believes Manchester United showed their true character by bouncing back from recent poor performances and a two-goal deficit to seal a stunning 3-2 comeback win against Atalanta.

All eyes were on Old Trafford on Wednesday to see whether under-fire Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could steer his side to victory in the Champions League, just days after the embarrassing 4-2 loss at Leicester.

Atalanta were on course to inflict a fifth defeat in eight matches when Mario Pasalic and Merih Demiral capitalised on poor United defending, with some of the Old Trafford faithful booing their players at half-time.

Paul Pogba believes United showed their true character by bouncing back against Atalanta

But Solskjaer's side displayed their spirit and camaraderie by storming back and netting three in the second period, with Marcus Rashford and Harry Maguire scoring before Cristiano Ronaldo headed home a late winner.

'We showed big character - the character of this team, of this club,' midfielder Pogba told MUTV.

'It was a very good result even if we didn't start well but at the end we got the result that we wanted and the energy, you could feel the belief and the positive energy just on the pitch.

'I can say it was a beautiful win, with the belief, we kept believing.

The midfielder said that 'you could feel the belief and the positive energy on the pitch'. Pogba and his United team-mates now sit top of Group F ahead of next month's return fixture. However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side have lost two in a three-game winless streak in the league, leading frustrated Pogba to say something needs to change

'We knew that if we score one goal we can win this game and the fans were crazy also. They push us until the end and we just showed the character of the team and the club.

'It's a big three points. We needed that. We didn't start the Champions League well with the loss against Young Boys but we got two very good results and we have to carry on.'

United are top of Group F ahead of next month's return fixture against Atalanta in Italy, with the immediate focus now returning to Premier League matters.

Solskjaer's side have lost two in a three-game winless streak in the league, leading frustrated Pogba to say something needs to change after the Leicester humiliation.

Asked if he saw that change on Wednesday, the France international said: 'On this game for sure the energy is more positive.

'But then when you say change it doesn't mean like you will change straight away. It's a work (in progress).

'It's all of us, it's a trust with everyone. It's a belief and you stick together, so all this is coming game by game but today for sure it's a big reaction.

'It's the way that we have to carry on until the end of the season.'

Wednesday's win lifted morale but now comes a crunch clash with rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday, with Tottenham and Manchester City following before November's international break.

'I mean, that's the beauty also of football because it's not a game that you can say 'oh, you rest',' Pogba said. 'You have to go again.

'We knew that it will come anyway, big teams, big clubs. We're Manchester United, we know it's not going to be easy but we're here to play those games.'

'Undisciplined, disrespectful... he will not be missed': Paul Scholes says Paul Pogba should NEVER play for Man United again over his 'ridiculous' Liverpool red card - and years of causing 'MAYHEM'

* Paul Pogba started on the bench but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer brought him on
* French midfielder was duly at fault for Liverpool's fifth goal by giving ball away
* Pogba was then shown a straight red card for dangerous tackle on Naby Keita
* Paul Scholes has suggested Pogba should never play for Man United again

Paul Scholes has questioned whether Paul Pogba should ever play for Manchester United again after his 'ridiculous' sending off against Liverpool.

The French midfielder was named among the substitutes by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but was introduced at half-time with United 4-0 down.

Pogba was directly responsible for Liverpool's fifth and final goal, scored by Mohamed Salah, after carelessly losing possession in the centre circle.

And he was then shown a straight red card on the hour for a dangerous tackle on Naby Keita.

Paul Pogba was sent off just 15 minutes after coming on as a half-time substitute during Manchester United's 5-0 thrashing by Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday. The midfielder's reckless tackle on Naby Keita saw an initial yellow card upgraded to a red

Pogba's current contract at United expires next summer and Scholes said he wouldn't be upset if that was his last outing for the club.

He told Premier League Productions: 'To say a disappointing day would be a complete understatement.

'I think we all realise it's been difficult, I just think the manager got caught up in the emotion of the comeback [against Atalanta in the Champions League] on Wednesday night.

'We keep going back to that game but you were never going to do that against Liverpool, they have too much quality.

'I don't think it was a lack of effort, I think tactically they were set up in a way where this could happen and unfortunately it did happen.

'Paul Pogba coming on to the pitch at half-time to try and help the team and maybe get a little respectability about it, tries to stand on the ball, tries to show how strong he is in the middle of the pitch… gives the goal away.

'Then later on gets sent off with a ridiculous tackle. Now you're 5-0 down with 10 men. You'd have to think, if Ole's still a manager there, will we see Pogba again in a United shirt?

'He's caused mayhem over the last couple of years. Everyone knows what a talent he is, everybody trusts him, every manager trusts him, tried to give him his head and let him be the player he's been.

'But with all the commotion, not signing his contract, almost holding the club to ransom, and then he comes on and does something like that.

Club legend Paul Scholes says 'disrespectful' Pogba shouldn't play another game for the club. It was another chastening afternoon for United as they were thrashed by their biggest rivals

'It's not Ole's fault, don't get me wrong, but that's part of it which almost summed the United performance up today.

'Look, he probably will play [again] won't he? But I don't think they will be missing anything if he doesn't.

'He's had numerous chances, he keeps saying he lacks consistency, but that is just [a lack of] discipline and disrespect for your manager and your team-mates, what he's done today.'

Solskjaer finds himself under severe pressure after a humiliating afternoon in which Liverpool outclassed United. Salah scored a hat-trick after early goals from Naby Keita and Diogo Jota set the visitors on their way.

Scholes had seen the shocking performance coming when he offered a sober assessment of United's shortcomings just minutes after their thrilling comeback win over Atalanta on Wednesday night.

Scholes said on BT Sport: 'You celebrate every win, the first half really worried me, people say I am miserable, but I looked at that game thinking about Liverpool at the weekend and playing Manchester City [on November 6].

'If you play two central midfielders against them, it'll be three or four-nil and you aren't coming back.

'It was great seeing all the shooting and crosses in second half, but that first half worried me. They showed great spirit but they conceded so many chances, quality players make sure you don't win that game.

'Will they play that well against Liverpool, imagine Jurgen Klopp at home rubbing his hands together watching that first half.

'Atalanta had too much possession, I don't think the performance can be good when you are two down at home, I am miserable. I kept going back to that first half, which was disastrous.'

United's next game is away to Tottenham on Saturday.

Angry Paul Pogba 'snubbed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the Man United dressing room' after thrashing by Liverpool at Old Trafford 'despite apologising to team-mates' for his red card shortly after coming on as a sub

* Paul Pogba was sent off during Man United's 5-0 loss to Liverpool last week
* The Frenchman came on at half-time in the match but saw red 15 minutes later
* Pogba reportedly apologised to his team-mates but said nothing to his manager
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is under big pressure after the devastating derby defeat
* Pogba's contract expires at the end of this season and his future is in doubt

Paul Pogba snubbed under-fire Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after being left out of the the club's starting line-up in their humiliating 5-0 loss to Liverpool, according to reports.

The French midfielder did not start the derby clash after being dropped by United's Norwegian boss on Sunday and while he did come on at half-time, he was sent off 15 minutes into the second half for a high lunge on Liverpool's Naby Keita.

The Red Devils are still feeling the impact of the devastating defeat to their fiercest rivals, with Solskjaer's position as manager under threat - though United will keep the Norwegian in the role for now.

And according to The Sun, Pogba apologised to his team-mates for his red card at Old Trafford, though did not say anything to Solskjaer after the loss.

The reported snub raises questions over Pogba's future at Old Trafford, with the 28-year-old's contract at Manchester United expiring at the end of this 2021-22 season.

Pogba's agent Mino Raiola has insisted that there is 'no update' in regards to the midfielder's ongoing contract situation.

If Pogba fails to agree to an extension before January, he will be allowed to discuss terms and sign a pre-contract with a foreign club ahead of a move next summer.

The 29-year-old has been linked with moves to Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain, while United are keen to keep the midfielder.

When asked about talks over a new deal, Raiola told The Times: 'You would have to ask Manchester United about it.

'At this moment everything is calm. There is no update.'

Meanwhile, club legend Paul Scholes said he wouldn't be upset if the Liverpool disappointment was Pogba's last outing for the club.

He told Premier League Productions: 'To say a disappointing day would be a complete understatement.

Mino Raiola says 'there is no update' on Paul Pogba's contract at Manchester United but insists 'everything is calm' with the France midfielder in the final year of his deal

* Mino Raiola insists Paul Pogba's contract situation at Man United hasn't changed
* Pogba's current deal at Old Trafford is set to expire at the end of the season
* Frenchman has been linked with moves to Real Madrid, Juventus and Barcelona
* United want to keep the midfielder and have tabled a £400,000-a-week offer
* However, Pogba's agent insists they are in no rush to sort a deal out with United

Paul Pogba's agent Mino Raiola has insisted that there is 'no update' in regards to the midfielder's ongoing contract situation at Manchester United.

The Frenchman's current deal at Old Trafford expires at the end of the season and he is yet to commit his future to the club, raising the prospect he could leave for free in the summer.

If Pogba fails to agree to an extension before January, he will be allowed to discuss terms and sign a pre-contract with a new club ahead of a move next summer.

It has seen the 29-year-old linked with moves to Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain, while United are keen to keep the midfielder.

However, even with the clock ticking, Raiola has claimed that there has been no movements in discussions over a new deal and that there is no rush to do so at the moment.

When asked about talks over a new deal, Raiola told The Times: 'You would have to ask Manchester United about it. At this moment everything is calm. There is no update.'

The powers that be at Old Trafford are keen to secure the Frenchman to a new long-term deal, with a £400,000-a-week deal reportedly set to be put on the table.

His mood towards a potential stay with the Red Devils has brightened given the recent arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo. However, talks around his future continue and his recent sending off in the humiliating 5-0 defeat at home by Liverpool have once again sparked the rumour mill.

According to reports from ABC earlier this month, Real are ready to offer Pogba just under £12million-a-year with a transfer bonus of just over £25m to convince him to swap Old Trafford for the Bernabeu at the end of the season.

The Spanish outlet claims that Raiola is pushing for the deal to happen and that Real are hoping to pair Pogba and Kylian Mbappe with their France team-mate Karim Benzema.

While he has shone brightly on the international stage, Pogba's second spell at Old Trafford has been blighted by inconsistency and he has never quite managed to hit the heights he reached at Juventus.

Raiola has repeatedly hinted his client may leave Old Trafford, suggesting in the past that Pogba was 'done at Manchester United' and that he needed a fresh challenge.

Following his capitulation against Liverpool, which saw him sent off just 15 minutes after coming on as a substitute, club legend Paul Scholes said he wouldn't be upset if that was his last outing for the club.

He told Premier League Productions: 'To say a disappointing day would be a complete understatement.

'I think we all realise it's been difficult, I just think the manager got caught up in the emotion of the comeback [against Atalanta in the Champions League] on Wednesday night.

Default Re: Paul Labile Pogba

Manchester United are 'ready to lose Paul Pogba for NOTHING' at the end of the season with bosses 'accepting' the wantaway French midfielder won't sign a new deal at Old Trafford

* Paul Pogba finds himself out of contract at Manchester United next summer
* The Frenchman's future continues to be unresolved as he edges towards expiry
* United will reportedly allow him to leave for nothing at the end of the campaign

Manchester United have 'accepted' Paul Pogba will not agree to a new contract and have prepared themselves to lose him on a free transfer at the end of the season, according to reports.

Pogba, 28, has so far failed to agree to fresh terms to extend his second stint at Manchester United.

The French midfielder will be eligible to discuss pre-contract terms with clubs outside of England as early as January and ESPN report that United bosses have accepted Pogba is set to depart.

Manchester United re-signed Pogba for £89million back in 2016 but he has proven to be a divisive figure among pundits and supporters ever since and has recently found himself out of the starting line-up.

Calls for him and his agent Mino Raiola to agree to a new long-term contract have so far been dismissed and the report explains that there is a growing belief that he will leave the club for nothing.

United could look to raise some money by selling him in January.

But his suitors, which have previously included Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus, are said to be focusing on next summer when he can join for free.

When asked about talks over a new deal, Raiola recently told The Times: 'You would have to ask Manchester United about it. At this moment everything is calm. There is no update.'

There would be a feeling of deja vu at United if he does walk away for nothing next summer, given this is the second time he has been running down his contract at Old Trafford.

Pogba left United, frustrated at a lack of opportunities as a young player under Sir Alex Ferguson, to join Juventus on a free back in 2012.

Pogba is currently serving a three-match ban in the Premier League after he came on and saw red for a rash challenge on Naby Keita in the 5-0 humiliation by Liverpool.

Default Re: Paul Labile Pogba

Paul Pogba is a superb footballer... One of Manchester United's greatest modern failures is not being able to build a team around him

* Paul Scholes recently criticised and accused Paul Pogba for causing ‘mayhem'
* But there is no evidence of that and Pogba remains a superb footballer
* The Frenchman always seems to deliver for his national team and not Man Utd
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer doesn't seem to know what Pogba's best position is

Paul Scholes’ recent dissection of Manchester United’s performances was largely intelligent. Amid the excitement of United’s comeback win against Atalanta in the Champions League, it was Scholes who predicted trouble ahead against Liverpool.

However, his comments about Paul Pogba seem less sure-footed. After Pogba’s sending-off in the Liverpool game, Scholes suggested his tackle on Naby Keita had been ‘ridiculous’ and accused the Frenchman of causing ‘mayhem over the last couple of years’.

I am not sure how much of that is true. Pogba was over the ball on Keita and had to go. However, there was no malice. He was trying to win the ball. He missed. It happens.

Paul Pogba came under huge scrutiny following his red card in the 5-0 defeat to Liverpool. Paul Scholes accused the French midfielder of causing mayhem 'over the last couple of years'. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer does not seem to know what Pogba's best position is. With his contract up in the summer, Pogba is expected to walk away for free yet again

In terms of his time at United the 28-year-old’s five or so seasons have been a huge disappointment. But mayhem? There seems scant evidence of that.

Pogba is a superb footballer who has not shone in his second spell at Old Trafford. He will always carry that with him, I am sure. But whenever I watch him play for France, I begin to wonder just whose fault all that really is.

In the recent Nations League games in Italy, Pogba was fabulous, running France’s midfield with energy, intelligence and great passion. Pogba is a fantastic passer of the ball, over long and short. He can make ground quickly and use the ball off either foot. He scores goals, good ones.

At United that rarely seems to happen. Pogba seems unsure of his role and often tries to over complicate things. As such he makes mistakes. Trying too hard to impress? Maybe.

All this occasionally reminds me of Juan Sebastian Veron’s time at United all those years ago. He was another midfield player who bombed at Old Trafford only to continually to look like the class act he undoubtedly was whenever he played for Argentina.

Veron’s problem was Roy Keane. The United captain did all the stuff Veron was good at and was not prepared to concede ground. There was not room in Sir Alex Ferguson’s team for both. Pogba’s issues have been less clear cut but there is one similarity. It was Ferguson’s job to make his £28million purchase of Veron in 2001 work and he failed. On Pogba’s arrival in 2016, it was United’s intention to build a team around him and they too have failed.

In fact, it is one of their greatest modern failures during a period where there have been many. What is Pogba’s best position for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s United? Does anybody know? Have we ever known? It seems not and that points to a succession of coaching failures.

With his contract up next summer, Pogba is expected to leave for nothing. Neither United nor Pogba’s representatives want to commit to that.

There is valuable PR ground to be won and lost. But there are no progressive talks about a new deal and it is now November.

And this is something that should trouble United a little. Were Pogba under contract, there would only be a small number of clubs in Europe who could afford a transfer fee and his wages. But a free transfer is different and that brings English clubs into play.

Imagine Pogba at Chelsea or Arsenal. It is not terribly far-fetched to imagine him doing reasonably well at clubs like those.

The fact is that Pogba has had a successful international career — he has 89 caps and is a World Cup winner — and was a hit at Juventus where he won Serie A four times. The only place where one of Europe’s most gifted footballers has not looked like a very good player indeed is at Manchester United.

So whose fault do we really think that is?
