Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher raring to go following successful bowel surgery



Darren Fletcher has given new Manchester United manager David Moyes an early boost after targeting his return for pre-season training.

Fletcher is ready to resume his United career at the beginning of July following a successful operation to cure a chronic bowel problem and could even be available for the start of next season.

The Scotland international has not played since December after cutting his season short for the second consecutive year to continue his long-running battle against the illness.

There have also been fresh doubts surrounding his future after Manchester United great Paddy Crerand recently hinted he may not play again.
But Fletcher had another operation to cure the recurring ulcerative colitis condition last month and is increasingly confident of attending the first day of Moyes’s pre-season programme.

Moyes has been a long-term admirer of the 29-year-old and attempted to sign him twice at Everton. He is understood to be up to speed with Fletcher’s recovery and is also expected to contact him in the next fortnight to get an update on his progress.

Outgoing United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has been publicly supportive of the midfielder since details of his condition emerged. He paid tribute to him during his farewell speech after United’s final home game of the season against Swansea City last Sunday, urging supporters to wish him a speedy recovery.

Fletcher has made only 10 appearances for United this season, with his last game the 4-3 win over Newcastle United on Boxing Day, but Ferguson has insisted he will receive a winners’ medal after securing the club’s 20th domestic title.

Ferguson’s departure will end an 18-year association for Fletcher, who joined United as an 11-year-old before making his first-team debut in the Champions League game against FC Basle in 2003.

He has two years remaining on his contract after signing an extension in March 2011.

Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher is set to be ready for action with the squad for the start of the new season.

The 29-year-old, who has been out for most of this term with a cronic bowel condition, looks to have recovered fully and it looks likely he will be ready for selection for the start of the new season later this year.

The Scotland international had been working with coaches in recent months at the club’s Carrington training ground to improve his fitness levels.

A club spokesman confirmed to SportsDirect News that Fletcher would be returning to the squad at the start of the season.

Darren Fletcher's long-term absence seems to have rendered him a forgotten man at Manchester United.

When fans discuss the side's midfield, potential formations and partnerships, his name is often nowhere to be found.

It is understandable. The Scottish workhorse has made just 12 Premier League appearances in the last two seasons.

The chronic bowel condition from which he has suffered has robbed the now-29-year-old of some of the peak years of his playing career.

But Fletcher is nearing a return. He should not be counted out yet.

According to a report in The Mirror last month, "he is said to be making good progress in his recovery from his enforced break and has targeted a return to pre-season training next month."

What can we expect from the midfielder next season if he does regain full fitness? What kind of a role can he expect to play in this new-fangled David Moyes team?

Here are a few thoughts on what the future holds for Darren Fletcher.

Role Under Moyes

David Moyes is a known admirer of his. He has made attempts to sign him for Everton in the past.

He is the type of player suited to Moyes' managerial style: an engine in the middle with an unbridled passion for the game.

In the celebrity era of Flash Harry's and money-hungry agents, his commitment to the cause is exemplary.

He was 11 when he first joined the Red Devils. He is Manchester United through and through.



At his peak, Fletcher was an understated force in the team's midfield. A player former boss Sir Alex Ferguson could trust to deliver in big games.

His experience will be key to a club that has just lost its figurehead.

If and when he does return, he can expect to vie for two jobs in the first team: in holding midfield or the box-to-box role.



The latter was his primary role before his health issues. But after such a long time out, it is doubtful he can still physically manage it.

With Moyes reportedly targeting Thiago Alcantara in the transfer market, as reported by Paul Clennam at Goal.com, Fletcher may no longer have the technical skill to play the vital link between Michael Carrick and the side's attack.

The position he will likely play will be in holding midfield.

Sir Alex suggested as much earlier this year on to the official club website:

He had to change his game and he hasn't been the Darren Fletcher of three or four years ago in the games this season.

Instead, he was sitting in front of the back four and he did well. That could be his role in the future. When he comes back, and I hope he does, it will be in a different role

He may need time to transition to this deep role, but it is the most viable option available right now.

What It Will Take

Obviously, the most important thing for Darren Fletcher will be getting back to full fitness as soon as possible.

This does not necessarily mean simply spending hours and hours in the gym, but playing valuable minutes and regaining match sharpness is also needed.

His mobility will be limited, especially in the first few months of the season, but this is where an adapted role will become important.




He will have to truly hone the more technical part of his game, such as his distribution and awareness.

He already has the tenacity to offer ample protection for the back line.

Michael Carrick will surely be the team's first-choice player here, but a fit Fletcher will be given game time where it suits.

Moyes will be willing to exert patience in his case, as will the fans who look forward to seeing him back in action at any rate.

Old Trafford has not forgotten him, even if it sometimes seems that way.

iya nih sih fleth, sprtinya masih belum benar2 sembuh dari penyakitnya... berharap saja ketika dirinya sudah benar2 fit untuk bermain, fletch akan mampu menunjukkan kembali kemampuannya bermain selama 90 menit untuk membantu united meraih trophy... dirinya adalah salah satu pemain yang selalu diturunkan oleh SAF ketika berlaga di partai besar... kembalinya fletch tentu akan lebih membantu DM untuk memilih stok pemain di posisi gelandang... semoga dirinya tidak kalah bersaing dengan thiago... hehe,

Fletch close to comeback



Darren Fletcher believes he could play again for Manchester United “not long after the start of the season”.

The Scotland midfielder’s last appearance came on Boxing Day 2012, shortly before he underwent surgery in a bid to help manage a serious bowel condition.

This is the second extended break the 29-year-old has been forced to take from football in the last 18 months, although Fletcher feels it won’t be long before he’s back out on the pitch.

“I think I will just miss the beginning of the season," he told BBC Radio 5 Live. “It's all going well. I am still under the hands of the medical team just now and the surgeon who is looking after me. Everything is going to plan so far and I am not that far away now.

“I've not been given the green light to join in contact in football training but I am doing my own running and physical activities and feel great. Hopefully in the next few weeks I am going to get the green light to join in and to start making the comeback, which is looking very good.”
