Alan Pardew: Don't let Wayne Rooney frighten you

Alan Pardew has told his Newcastle players they must not be scared of Wayne Rooney as they try to stop him firing Manchester United towards the title tonight.

He rated the striker's display against Chelsea in last week's Champions League quarter-final as his best in a year and a half.

Now Pardew wants his men to relish the task of trying to tame Rooney, who returns from a two‑game domestic ban imposed after his F-word rant at West Ham.

"It's 100 per cent that Rooney will play but if you're going to beat them, beat them with Rooney in the team," said the Newcastle boss.

"Of course, he's hit form, and I think the Chelsea game was the best I've seen him play for 18 months. It was an all-round performance, and that's what we're going to have to deal with."

Rooney scored the only goal of the first leg of the European tie, taking his tally to 10 from 16 games. He was also hugely influential in the return at Old Trafford with his superb cross-field ball playing a pivotal role in Javier Hernandez's goal.

Pardew added: "Rooney has much more in his locker than just goals. He links a lot of things for United, and one thing that we can't let him do is dictate the game. He did that at times against Chelsea last week."
