Re: [UCL] Man Utd vs Schalke (Semifinal 2nd Leg)
Rooney misses Utd training session
5/3/2011 Wayne Rooney was absent from the open 15-minute section of training this morning ahead of Manchester United’s Champions League semi-final against Schalke at Old Trafford. Rooney had not suggested there was any problem when he tweeted this morning that he was heading for training after dropping son Kai off at his nursery. However, he was missing as United went through their paces at their Carrington training complex. In itself, Rooney’s failure to appear should not be viewed as an indication he will not be involved against Schalke. The 25-year-old England striker also missed a similar session ahead of United’s meeting with Chelsea in the quarter-finals and still scored in the Red Devils’ first leg victory. In addition Alex Ferguson has also suggested Rooney will not start tomorrow as the Scot intends to select top scorer Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Owen for a game in which his side will be defending a 2-0 first leg lead. With a crucial Premier League encounter with Chelsea to come on Sunday Ferguson will be giving plenty of thought to the players he intends to choose. Darren Fletcher, out for two months with a virus, was training and is available but Brazilian defender Fabio, who suffered a knock in Sunday’s defeat at Arsenal, did not train and seems unlikely to be involved. Denmark keeper Anders Lindegaard has recovered from the knee ligaments injury that has ruled him out for a couple of months should Ferguson wish to rest first choice keeper Edwin van der Sar. Re: [UCL] Man Utd vs Schalke (Semifinal 2nd Leg)

Re: [UCL] Man Utd vs Schalke (Semifinal 2nd Leg)

United v Schalke Avoid defeat at OT and the Reds will set up a repeat of the 2009 Champions League final... Form guide Following last Tuesday's 2-0 triumph over Schalke in the away leg, United stumbled to a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal in the Barclays Premier League - a result which leaves the Reds three points clear at the top with a title-decider against Chelsea to come on Sunday. Surprisingly, all four Champions League semi-finalists lost their domestic matches at the weekend, including the Reds' German visitors - Ralf Rangnick’s side were thrashed 4-1 by Bayern Munich. Ins and outs Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed he’ll shuffle his pack for Wednesday’s match, earmarking Dimitar Berbatov, Paul Scholes and Michael Owen for starting roles. The boss has also confirmed Darren Fletcher will feature at some point following a successful recovery from a virus. Wayne Rooney is a doubt after missing training on Tuesday morning with a tight hamstring. Schalke are without long-term absentees Christoph Moritz (knee), Christian Pander (toe) and Mario Gavranovic (ankle), but Benedikt Howedes (stomach strain) and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (knee) are in contention after missing several weeks of action. Last meeting With a somewhat sketchy record against German opposition, particularly in knockout rounds, United were fully braced for a difficult night at the Vetlins-Arena last week. However, a fine team display made light work of Schalke and the Reds registered a comfortable 2-0 win with second-half goals in quick succession from Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney. Sir Alex declared the victory to be among the club’s greatest away wins in Europe: "We've had some fantastic performances and Juventus (1999) will always be high on the list but this certainly ranks as one of the best." Star man If you hadn't heard of Manuel Neuer prior to the first leg in Gelsenkirchen, you certainly knew his name afterwards. Germany's number one was sensational against the Reds and almost single-handedly kept his side in the game, pulling off a string of world-class saves to deny United’s attacking efforts for more than an hour. Although a move to Bayern Munich is reportedly signed and sealed, Neuer continues to be touted as a replacement for Edwin van der Sar at Old Trafford. Any sub-plots? Bayer Leverkusen (in 2002) and Bayern Munich (2010) have both knocked United out of the Champions League knockout stages on the away-goals rule. Schalke need to win by three goals or more to achieve the same. Unlikely? Erm, they won 5-2 at Inter Milan in the last round... Whistle-blower Pedro Proenca is the man in the middle for this one. The Portuguese official, born in Lisbon, has been involved in the Champions League since 2007. He refereed United’s 1-1 draw with Valencia at Old Trafford earlier this season. Did you know? Edwin van der Sar will break the record for Champions League semi-final appearances if he features against the Germans - taking his total to 14 games overtaking Claude Makelele’s 13.

Re: [UCL] Man Utd vs Schalke (Semifinal 2nd Leg)

Re: [UCL] Man Utd vs Schalke (Semifinal 2nd Leg)
