Default Re: [UCL] Olympiakos Piraeus vs Manchester United

Is Manchester United's UCL Passage Assured Now Mitroglou Has Left Olympiakos?

When Olympiakos was drawn from the hat as the opponents for Manchester United in the first knockout stage of the Champions League, many fans drew a relaxed breath and sighed.

The 2013-14 season has been the hardest for the supporters of the Red Devils for obvious reasons, as everything domestically collapses around them.

The Premier League trophy will soon be on its travels away from Old Trafford to either London or just down the road, and that is a bitter pill to swallow when you have not even pretended to defend the title.

So, it seems slightly odd that the biggest competition of them all should offer the most relief to a football club in dire straits.

Olympiakos are certainly not the most feared team on mainland Europe. They are a decent team who had one fireball of a striker up front: Konstantinos Mitroglou, their Greek international striker.

Mitroglou has smashed 16 goals in only 14 matches this season, per WhoScored.com, and has been the driving force of the club this season.

But now he's gone.

Mitroglou joined Fulham on deadline day for £12 million and is preparing to make his debut for the London club, per Dave Kidd's report for The Mirror.

So, with the prolific attacker's exit, opting for a possible career in the Championship rather than elite European competition, does this mean United are assured to make the quarter-finals?

There is a danger here that David Moyes' team could fall into some kind of mythical comfort zone.

United's form has been disastrous this season, with them not even being able to hang on for a home victory against Mitroglou's new club, who prop up the basement of the Premier League.

Should Man Utd take their Greek opponents lightly, they could become the biggest shock exit of this season's tournament.

But in theory, it would not be a shock.

Olympiakos enter the tie showing perfection in their form. According to WhoScored.com, they have been victorious in their last six games, scoring 17 times.

Their Champions League formation could also give United issues.

Moyes' team's weakness is still very much in the centre of his midfield, and the fact that Olympiakos play a 4-2-3-1 could suffocate United's core. Even without Mitroglou, they are still scoring goals and will look to take advantage of United's poor fortune.

This match is by no means a forgone conclusion, and it might end up being one of the Greek club's greatest days in the Champions League.

United could lose to any club the way things stand, so an organised and motivated underdog is not exactly the type of team they want to be playing right now.

The Reds showed that they can stay disciplined against bigger opposition. At Stamford Bridge, they looked balanced and busy and almost stole the victory.

But against the so called smaller clubs, they have looked vulnerable and beatable.

Olympiakos will provide a stern test for United. Moyes will have to show a better grasp of tactics than he has done recently against Stoke and Fulham.

If he does not, it could really be the end of United's season in just the blink of an eye, and also the possible end of his tenure.

The Champions League is the manager's last bite of the cherry this year.

Moyes needs to make sure he does not choke on the stone.

Ritchie backing Reds Euro mission

Ex-United striker Andy Ritchie had a look at Olympiakos for MUTV last weekend and reckons they shouldn't prove too much of a challenge for David Moyes and his team.

Manchester United will attempt to rescue their season in Athens this time next week against Olympiacos.

With automatic qualification for the Champions League via the Premier League top four now looking bleak the last 16 tie against the Greeks will be manager David Moyes’ platform from which to attempt to salvage a place in UEFA’s elite competition next season.

In contrast to their domestic woes the Reds eased through their group stage in Europe saving one of their best performances of the season for the 5-0 away win against Bayer Leverkusen in November.

In the Greek capital next Tuesday night United start the knockout road to the final in Lisbon in May.

Former United striker Andy Ritchie had a preview of Olympiacos last Saturday when he covered their Greek Super League match against Platanias for MUTV as co-commentator and he believes the Reds Euro form will see them into the quarter finals.

The first leg in the Karaiska Stadium has been a fortress for Olympiacos and proved so again against third bottom Platanias in a 4-2 victory.

The Greek champions have won all 13 of their league matches at home this season scoring 43 goals and conceding just seven in the process.

They have only concede twice away from home and won 10 and drawn two of those matches.

It has built up a phenomenal 20 point lead at the top of the Super League ahead of PAOK Salonika.

Ritchie doesn’t expect the Greek team to have the same dominance over David Moyes side.

“It was hard to judge Olympiacos really because they are so obviously the best side in Greece by some distance and Platanias had lost ten times away from home,” Andy told MEN Sport.

“They also rested a number of senior players ahead of the United match so it wasn’t a complete picture you were getting of them. But one of the things that stood out was they were a bit dodgy at the back.

"In fact, Platanias scored first and that certainly wasn’t in the script. The visitors scored twice and Olympiacos’s defending wasn’t good at all for either of them.

“It was probably because they were so dominant that they switched off at the back and maybe they will be a lot more tuned in when they are facing Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie.

“They won’t have the same control over United so they will probably improve their concentration at the back. The match was a bit like watching United against Fulham recently where the Reds had so much possession that they just lost concentration at the back. Olympiacos had something like 75 per cent possession on Saturday.

“It was expected to be a walkover for them and that Platanias would lie down and die. But they didn’t. However, in the last 15 minutes Olympiacos came good and took them apart."

After going behind to a first half goal Olympiacos hit back and went into a comfortable lead before a Platanias second .But Ritchie saw enough in Olympiacos’s period of powerplay to suggest United will still have to be on their mettle.

“They played pretty much a 4-4-2 system and the players who impressed with the two wingers Michael Olaitan and Hernan Perez. Perez in particular was the stand out man on the night. He looked very dangerous, quick and lively.

“The Paraguayan made a goal and scored one himself. He is a big threat because he likes to go at players. Whoever David Moyes picks at right back next Tuesday night whether it is Rafael or Chris Smalling they are going to have a battle on their hands. It will be a testing night for either of them.

“But on the whole United’s Champions League form suggests they can win through.”

menurut sumber dari opa, ada hukuman buat Olympiakos. Sumber dibawah menyebut stadionnya ditutup separuh

Partially closed stadium for Olympiakos v Manchester United

UEFA have ordered Olympiakos to play their Champions League last-16 tie with Manchester United in partially-closed stadiums due to racist behaviour by the clubs' fans.
Olympiakos, who take on David Moyes' men at the Karaiskakis Stadium on February 25, will have to close the lower tier of the north stand of the ground, while they have also been fined €30,000.
According to UEFA, the sanctions were imposed on Olympiakos for "the racist conduct of supporters, insufficient organisation, the setting-off of fireworks and the use of a laser" during the club's 3-1 group-stage win at home to Anderlecht on December 10.
Zenit St Petersburg have been hit with a similar ban and will have to close the section of the Petrovsky Stadium where the club's ultras are usually located for their first leg tie with Borussia Dortmund on February 25.
UEFA stated that the Russian club were punished for "the racist behaviour of fans - namely the displaying of a banner - the setting-off and throwing of fireworks and crowd disturbances" during their 4-1 defeat at Austria Vienna on December 11.

Apalagi Olympiakos biasa main pake 5 pemain tengah. Mudah2an om Moyes punya strategi yg maknyuss yaaaa
