CHRIS SUTTON: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made a mistake... the Manchester United boss should have brought on Dean Henderson - who has a FAR better penalty record - for the shootout

* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may regret his decision not to make a goalkeeper change
* Manchester United boss should have brought on Dean Henderson for shootout
* Englishman's record of saving penalties is far superior to David De Gea's stats
* It may have hurt De Gea's feelings but it could have won United the trophy

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer missed a trick here. Dean Henderson’s record of saving penalties is ridiculously better than David De Gea’s.

Yet while Villarreal were burying all of their spot-kicks beyond De Gea in Wednesday night’s shootout, Henderson was watching on from the sidelines.

Louis van Gaal replaced Holland goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen with Tim Krul in the 120th minute of their 2014 World Cup quarter final against Costa Rica. That worked out pretty well.

Solskjaer could have copied Van Gaal. It might have hurt De Gea’s feelings but it would have been for the good of the team. Unfortunately, Manchester United’s players ended up leaving with runners-up medals around their necks.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer missed a trick keeping David De Gea on for the penalty shootout. The Manchester United boss will reflect on what might have happened had he made change

I feel for De Gea missing the ultimate spot-kick. He would have never expected it to come around to him. It takes balls to step up to that spot.

I participated in a few penalty shootouts with Celtic. It’s almost 20 years since Valencia knocked us out of the Europa League.

Poor Joos Valgaeren missed his first penalty, then a retake was ordered because the goalkeeper was off his line. Valgaeren took it again, and missed again. As he made his way back to the halfway line, he asked the referee if he could have a third go!

Quote:
PENALTY RECORDS:

IN ALL COMPS SINCE START OF 2017-18 (not including shootouts):

- David De Gea has faced 16 penalties and has conceded all 16
- Dean Henderson has faced 15 penalties and conceded just 8
I can look back and laugh now – but it definitely wasn’t funny at the time. Henrik Larsson and Stilian Petrov missed theirs, too.

It’s about how you handle the pressure when that moment of truth comes. Sadly De Gea couldn’t make the heroic saves necessary and he couldn’t score when it was his turn.

Solskjaer will no doubt spend some time wondering whether he could have played this differently, and what might have happened if he had.

'Toothless' Manchester United lacked the 'imagination and creativity' to beat Villarreal in the Europa League final, says Rio Ferdinand.... who insists they just 'weren't good enough'

* Manchester United lost the Europa League final to Villarreal on Wednesday
* Rio Ferdinand says Manchester United were lacking 'imagination and creativity'
* He said they failed to take the game by the scruff of the neck after Cavani scored
* Ferdinand also believes United relied too much on individuals during the game

Rio Ferdinand says Manchester United were lacking 'imagination and creativity' against Villarreal on Wednesday night.

The Red Devils failed to end their four year wait for a trophy after losing the Europa League final in a dramatic shootout that came down to David De Gea's crucial penalty.

Speaking about the match as a whole, Ferdinand said United failed to take 'the game by the scruff of the neck' after Edinson Cavani scored and said they relied too much on 'individuals'.

Speaking after United's defeat, Ferdinand said: 'Listen, Man United have relied on individuals to come up with the trump card.

'Bruno has been the man they leaned on, Cavani later in the season. Today they didn't come up with the goods.

'The imagination wasn't there, their creativity wasn't there.

Manchester United lost the Europa League final to Villarreal on Wednesday night. They lost the Europa League final in a dramatic penalty shootout that came down to De Gea

'They had little moment after Cavani scored, you thought they had momentum. They didn't take the game by the scruff of the neck.

'They were toothless at times. The experience of Emery, the way he set the team up, they nullified them, they got the job done and credit to them.

'Tonight was the test and they failed.'

'They can't get over the line. Semi-finals last season, now they've got tot a final but they can't get over the line to win silverware.

'You're not afforded time usually. They're in a position now where they need to turn finals into silverware.'

Rio Ferdinand says United were lacking 'imagination and creativity' during the game. Neil Lennon has also said their performance was 'ineffective and lacked creativity and flair'

Ferdinand went on to say: 'If you look as a whole they've improved on last season, this was an opportunity to form part of a winning culture, it was the acid test tonight and the team failed.

'Ole tried to create environment to make a unit for these situations, they didn't get a job done. To be brutal, it is a failure.'

Former Celtic manager Neil Lennon shared the same thoughts as Ferdinand, having told BBC 5 Live: 'I didn't see enough of the Manchester United way tonight and I haven't seen enough of it in the last three or four years.

'Back in the end when you went to watch them you wanted to watch the Harlem Globetrotters and you wanted to be entertained.

'There was zero entertainment tonight - it was functional, ineffective and lacked a lot of creativity and flair.'

'We didn't turn up': Manchester United were not good enough in Europa League final against Villarreal, admits Solskjaer after penalty shootout defeat... and boss calls on 'disappointed' dressing room to 'taste' feeling to avoid a repeat

* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says United failed to 'turn up' for their Europa League final
* They suffered a crushing defeat on penalties against Villarreal - read the report
* The manager says it was disappointing to concede on a set play on Wednesday
* Solskjaer also said that Manchester United 'need to get better' to be successful

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted Manchester United failed to turn up after they suffered Europa League final heartbreak against Villarreal.

Goalkeeper David De Gea saw his penalty saved by rival Geronimo Rulli at the end of a dramatic, 22-kick marathon shoot-out to earn Villarreal their first ever major trophy but leave Solskjaer and his players crestfallen.

The United manager said: ‘We didn’t turn up. We didn’t play as well as we can do. That’s football for you. Sometimes decided on one kick and that’s the difference between winning and losing.

‘We’ve got to, not savour the feeling, but taste it and make sure you don’t get it again.’

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Manchester United failed to 'turn up' for their Europa League final

Striker Marcus Rashford issued a passionate defence of United after they ended the season second in the Premier League but trophy-less.

He said: ‘We came here to win and have been working hard all season and this was the opportunity to win a trophy and it did not happen.

‘All I can say is the team will not give up. No chance. The manager will not give up. He won’t allow us to give up and we will come back next season with a bigger desire.

‘People say a lot about Manchester United, “they’re going downhill, blah blah, blah” but for me the club, the desire, the hunger, the talent, the ability, we have everything to compete at the highest level. We just have to show it to the world and to ourselves. Why we belong at the top, in finals like this, winning finals like this.

The Red Devils lost the final against Villarreal on Wednesday night due to penalties. The dramatic shootout came down to David De Gea's crucial penalty - which he missed

‘Second doesn't count for nothing. Manchester City win the league, we finished second. Doesn't mean nothing. Villarreal won the Europa League, we finished second.

‘For us it's nothing. I don't want to hear “they were so close” because it means nothing. One winner, one loser. Today we lost. We have to find out why and make sure next time we don't lose.

‘I'm 100% sure [we can compete because of] sacrifice. To win big trophies you have to show sacrifice. I could walk you into the dressing room and show you five, six, seven players - and me - who have had injuries from the start of the season. We all stayed and fought to be successful for the club.

‘We have to go away and clear our heads. When we come back we start fresh.

‘When Ole came in we had a process. We believe in the process. Part of the process is ups and downs. Just because we lose today I promise the fans no chance we give up.

‘We will come back next season with more desire and hunger. We have to give 110%.

‘I know in every club they don't have this sacrifice. In the top clubs they do. That's why they win trophies. We're close, I promise we're close.’

Rashford issued a defence of United after they ended up second in the league but trophy-less. He promised fans 'they are close' and that they will come back next season with more hunger

After Edinson Cavani’s second-half equaliser cancelled out Gerard Moreno’s first-half opener there were no further goals in Gdansk and it was Villarreal who triumphed following the nerve-shredding shootout extending below-par United’s wait for a first trophy since 2017 while Unai Emery lifted the Europa League for a fourth time.

Solskjaer said: ‘No. It’s not a successful season. Trophies is what matter at this club so no is the short answer.’

De Gea was beaten by all 11 penalties and started the shootout having last saved a spot-kick back in April 2016.

Solskjaer added: ‘You go through every scenario of course and it has crossed my mind in build up to the game [De Gea’s penalty record] but we were confident in David and prepared but anything can happen in penalty shootouts so I stuck with the keeper who played all the game.’

Bruno Fernandes breaks down in tears, Paul Pogba rips off his medal and Manchester United stars are distraught after defeat to Villarreal... just as Paul Scholes was questioning if their players ARE hurt by losing

* Manchester United lost Europa League final to Villarreal in a penalty shootout
* Bruno Fernandes was visibly gutted and broke down in tears after the match
* Paul Scholes questioned if some of United's stars would be hurt by the loss
* But plenty of the players looked distraught after the shootout defeat
* Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba were among the players who appeared aghast

Bruno Fernandes was reduced to tears after Manchester United's agonising penalty shootout defeat against Villarreal in the Europa League final - and he was not alone in looking heartbroken.

Paul Pogba removed his silver medal immediately after being presented with it on the podium during the trophy ceremony and hung his head, while Marcus Rashford hid his face in his shirt and was a picture of misery as he sat on the bench reflecting on the shock loss, as did Fred. Victor Lindelof also looked close to tears, while Edinson Cavani looked aghast.

The images come in sharp contrast to the comments of Paul Scholes, who claimed on BT Sport after the game that defeat 'doesn't hurt' many of United's players and that losing was now 'acceptable' at the club with which he once dominated England.

Talisman Fernandes played an inspirational role in getting United to Gdansk, having scored five times and assisted four from his nine games in the Europa League this season - but he was unable to make an impact in the showpiece match and was left sobbing after they fell at the last hurdle.

David de Gea's penalty miss handed Villarreal an 11-10 victory and boss Unai Emery his fourth Europa League triumph.

Wednesday's final was United's only opportunity to claim silverware this season but the defeat meant they finish it empty handed.

A crestfallen Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted his side 'didn't turn up' and hopes they will learn from the crushing defeat.

'We've got to, not savour this one, but taste this feeling and make sure we don't get it again,' he said.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's wait for silverware as United manager goes on after defeat in Gdansk

'It's quiet [in the dressing room] of course. It's a disappointed dressing room. That's football for you. Sometimes it's decided on one kick and that's the difference between winning and losing. Got to learn from that one.

'Now is not the time to point the finger at what I'd have done differently. But when you come out without the trophy you haven't done everything right.

'We're getting closer and closer and better. We were one kick away from a trophy and a good night.

'We have to have the desire to come back next year and improve. The only way to get the margins your side is to work harder and better.

'Can Manchester United call this season a success? No.'

Club legend Scholes criticised United's mentality after the match and questioned whether losing the final would really hurt the players.

Scholes himself won the Premier League 11 times, plus the Champions League twice, the FA Cup three times and the League Cup twice during an era when United were all-conquering domestically and consistently challenging to be the best side in Europe.

'It's difficult to come out of that game and give them credit, they weren't good tonight,' Scholes told BT Sport .

'Overall there has been progress. But does losing hurt them enough? It's almost become an accepted thing. From Ole's point of view, where is the demands?

'He has made progress, but this club expects to win trophies. If it gets into the next couple of years and there's still nothing he might have a problem. There aren't the demands there where he has to win.

'A few players, it doesn't hurt them. Bruno Fernandes, Edinson Cavani, they won't like it. They look like they're proper hurt, the others it can look acceptable, even from the manager. They've become a nice club.'

Rashford pulled no punches in his post-match interview, stressing that United's season, in which they also finished second in the Premier League behind rivals Manchester City, was 'not good enough'.

'Disappointing... the feeling inside is difficult to explain,' Rashford told BT Sport.

'We came here to win. We worked so hard all season - this was the opportunity to win a trophy, it didn't happen. But we have to get rid of the disappointment, after that we will look back at the game, what we did wrong where we can improve.

'All I can say is we won't give up. The manager won't allow us to give up. We come next season with a bigger desire. People say a lot about us going downhill, blah blah blah.

'For me, the talent, ability - we have everything to compete at the highest level, we just have to show it... why we belong in finals like this, winning finals like this. In the league we finished second, but it doesn't count for nothing. Man City win the league and we finish second, it means nothing.

'For us, I don't wanna hear "they were so close", it doesn't mean anything. There's one winner, one loser. Next time, we have to make sure we don't lose.'

Bruno Fernandes handed Villarreal a 20% advantage in the Europa League final shootout by deciding that Manchester United would shoot second, according to LSE professor who is an EXPERT on penalty planning

* Manchester United lost the Europa League final on penalties to Villarreal
* Bruno Fernandes took the decision to let the Spanish side take their kicks first
* However, an expert in psychological studies insists this was the wrong call
* According to Ignacio Palacios-Huerta, it gave their opponents a sizeable boost

Bruno Fernandes handed Villarreal an enormous advantage during Manchester United's Europa League final penalty shootout defeat by selecting his team to go second.

That is the expert opinion of one LSE professor who has studied the psychological effects of spot-kicks and other high-pressured situations.

United lost in Gdansk on Wednesday night after David de Gea saw his spot-kick saved by Geronimo Rulli to hand the Spanish side an 11-10 win on penalties after the game finished 1-1 after extra-time.

Bruno Fernandes handed Villarreal a huge advantage during the Europa League shootout. The Portuguese forward decided that Manchester United would take their spot-kicks second

Fernandes was clearly left distraught by his side's failing in Poland, with the midfield star seen in tears after the end of the shootout.

However, according to statistics, that outcome could have been different had Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side stepped up to take the first penalty.

What was most galling to those who know the field well is that the Premier League side did have the opportunity to choose their own fate - but United's Portuguese captain made a glaring error.

As Ignacio Palacios-Huerta told Sportsmail: 'I would think that most people in football know about, or at least have the right intuition on this 60-40 advantage.

'It was shocking to see that Bruno decided to give that 20 per cent advantage to Villarreal.'

David de Gea was the unfortunate fall guy for the Premier League side, as he missed kick No 11

In his paper - Psychological Pressure in Competitive Environments: Evidence from a Randomized Natural Experiment - Palacios-Huerta reveals that in a selection of penalty shootouts studied from 1976 to 2003, 60.5 per cent were won by the team taking the first kick.

In its conclusions, the writers point to the 'detrimental effect on performance' that going second in a shootout has, as appeared to be proven by De Gea's weak spot-kick.

Indeed, De Gea's poor penalty record did lead to Solskjaer contemplating subbing the Spaniard ahead of the shootout.

The Norwegian admitted after the game: 'You go through every scenario, of course, and it [De Gea's penalty record] had crossed my mind in the build-up to the game but we were confident in David and prepared.

'Anything can happen in a penalty shootout. I stuck with the keeper who played all of the game.

'I've got to say the penalty shootout was high quality, but we didn't do enough in the 120 minutes to score more goals and that's the disappointing bit.

'We had pressure, we had moments where we felt if we can just kick on a little bit now we can get a goal. But we just couldn't.'

Gary Neville SLAMS Man United for 'switching performances on and off like a tap' after Europa League final loss to Villarreal... as Jamie Carragher mercilessly trolls his fellow Sky Sports pundit on Twitter

* Manchester United lost to Villarreal on penalties in the Europa League final
* The result means the Red Devils' have had four trophyless seasons in a row
* Gary Neville admits United are switching 'performances on and off like a tap'
* The United legend claims pressure is now on manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Gary Neville claims Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is now under pressure at Manchester United after losing the Europa League final as the club 'can't switch performances on and off like a tap'.

The Red Devils were beaten on penalties by Unai Emery's Villarreal on Wednesday night after a 1-1 draw which saw Edinson Cavani cancel out Gerard Moreno's strike in normal time.

The result means Premier League runners-up United have failed to win a trophy for the fourth consecutive season, with their last major honour coming in 2017. Neville, who has backed Solskjaer in the past, has demanded his former side spend well in the summer as a good start to next season is needed 'badly'.

Gary Neville says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is under pressure after the Europa League loss. United were beaten on penalties by Unai Emery's Villarreal as their trophy drought continues

The former United and England defender tweeted: 'You can't switch performance on and off like a tap. Haven't played well for weeks and last night a continuation of the form recently.

'Pressure will be applied to Ole and the team. Rightly so. Need to get it right this summer and a good start to next season needed badly!'

Despite Neville's defiance and serious message to the club, he was unable to avoid Jamie Carragher's jokes, with the former Liverpool defender and his fellow Sky Sports pundit trolling him by tweeting a funny picture of himself making a cheeky face while Neville spoke on Monday Night Football.

Neville ripped into United's performance on Wednesday and called on the club to respond well. Neville claims Solskjaer's United cannot keep switching 'performances on and off like a tap'

Defeat in the final to Villarreal, which came after David de Gea saw his spot kick saved by Geronimo Rulli after all of the outfield players had sensationally scored their penalty efforts, means Solskjaer is still without a trophy as United manager.

In the Premier League the Red Devils finished 12 points behind rivals Manchester City - who also beat them in the Carabao Cup semi-finals as well - while they were knocked out of the FA Cup quarter-finals by eventual winners Leicester.

United boss Solskjaer admits his side did not turn up for the Gdansk final on Wednesday night and has challenged them to pick themselves up from the agonising disappointment.

He said after the final loss: 'We didn't turn up. We didn't play as well as we can do. That's football for you.

'It's sometimes decided on one kick and that's the difference between winning and losing.

'We've got to, not savour the feeling, but taste it and make sure you don't get it again.'

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admits he DID consider subbing on Dean Henderson because of David de Gea's poor penalty record but was 'confident' in the Spaniard because they'd prepared him for it... but he then conceded ALL 11 spot-kicks (before failing to score)

* David de Gea failed to make a single save as Villarreal beat United on penalties
* The Spaniard has now conceded the last 40 he's faced for club and country
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted he was aware of De Gea's abysmal penalty record
* He said he considered putting Dean Henderson on but was confident in De Gea
* Sportsmail's Chris Sutton said Solskjaer made a mistake by not replacing De Gea

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed he did consider replacing David de Gea with Dean Henderson before the penalty shootout in Manchester United's Europa League final defeat against Villarreal.

De Gea, who missed the only spot-kick as Villarreal claimed a 11-10 victory, has an abysmal record from penalty situations and has now conceded the last 40 he's faced in regulation time and shootouts for United and Spain.

The United keeper has not saved a penalty for five years, his last coming against Everton in the 2016 FA Cup final, while Henderson has a considerably better record.

David de Gea looks dejected as he collects his runners-up medal after Europa League final loss. The Man United keeper failed to make a single save as they lost 11-10 in the penalty shootout

Henderson thwarted Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus from 12 yards while on loan at Sheffield United last season and has also in the past made key saves in the 2019 Under-21 European Championship and the 2018 League One Play-off final.

Solskjaer however opted to send Alex Telles and Juan Mata on as his final two substitutions in added time merely so they could take penalties before later admitting that he had contemplated replacing De Gea instead.

'You go through every scenario, of course, and it [De Gea's penalty record] had crossed my mind in the build-up to the game but we were confident in David and prepared.

'Anything can happen in a penalty shootout. I stuck with the keeper who played all of the game.

De Gea was the only player to miss from the spot, handing Villarreal victory in Gdansk. His awful penalty record continued and he has now conceded the last 40 he's faced

After Edinson Cavani's second-half equaliser cancelled out Gerard Moreno's first-half opener there were no further goals in Gdansk and it was Villarreal who triumphed following the nerve-shredding shootout, extending below-par United's wait for a first trophy since 2017 - while Unai Emery lifted the Europa League for a fourth time.

Ole memilih De Gea yg lebih berpengalama dikancah Eropa namun dia sudah tau resikonya jika terjadi adu penalti karena rekor buruk De Gea kecuali pas mau adu penalti Ole memasukkan Henderson seperti yg dilakukan Van Gal waktu memasukkan Krul di Piala Dunia waktu itu, mungkin ceritanya akan berbeda
