Re: United Reserve Matches
Quote:
Reserves: United 1 Liverpool 0 United are on the brink of a first Barclays Premier Reserve League title in four seasons, after Gabriel Obertan's scorching drive overcame Liverpool. The Frenchman arrowed home an unstoppable 25-yard drive on the cusp of half-time in a tense, top-of-the-table clash at Moss Lane, the result of which leaves United nine points clear of the Merseysiders, who have two games in hand. Four points from games against Burnley and Wigan will guarantee the title for United. In a customarily tight encounter between the sides, livewire winger Obertan provided the one moment of outstanding quality, and was the liveliest threat on show in a match dominated by two sturdy defences. It took half an hour for the first attack of note, and only breathtaking defending from Liverpool's Victor Palsson kept the scoresheet blank. Obertan's surge to the byline and cross caused havoc in the away area, in which Febian Brandy spun and shot goalwards, only for Palsson to somehow keep the ball from crossing the line with an heroic lunge. Soon afterwards, Brandy's speculative lob into the danger zone forced back-pedalling goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi to tip over his crossbar, before Francisco Duran's free-kick prompted a fine full-length catch from Ben Foster. Just as the half seemed to be meandering to a close, however, Obertan broke the deadlock in devastating fashion. In keeping with the game, the goal's build-up was scrappy as the Frenchman jostled with Damien Plessis for possession, but his subsequent shot tore into the top corner. Within seconds of the start of the second half, Obertan almost grabbed a second. Latching onto a through-ball from Will Keane, on as a substitute for Brandy, the winger could only toe-poke just wide of Gulacsi's upright. As the half wore on, Liverpool enjoyed greater possession and carried much menace in their play, but a resolute United backline refused to concede a clear chance for an equaliser. David Amoo's glanced header into the side netting provided a scare, but otherwise the Reds' defence stuck to the task manfully. At the other end, the visitors were similarly steadfast - although Chris Mavinga almost sealed his side's misery with a spectacular near-miss, stabbing just past his own top corner in a desperate attempt to clear a loose ball. Obertan and Rodrigo Possebon both attempted pot-shots from outside the area without success, while Gerardo Bruna fired over from a half-cleared corner with his side's final chance. With that opportunity went the visitors' hopes of salvaging anything tangible from the game, and perhaps from the title race. With a massively superior goal difference and a six point lead, United need a maximum of four more points to clinch the coveted crown. United: Foster; Wootton, De Laet, Gill, Dudgeon; Stewart (Pogba 86), C Evans, Possebon, Norwood, Obertan; Brandy (W Keane 46). Subs not used: Devlin, Moffatt, Thorpe.

Re: United Reserve Matches
Manchester Senior Cup
22 April 2010, Moss Lane MANCHESTER UNITED 0 MANCHESTER CITY 2 Mak (77), Tutte (79) Reserves: Utd 0 Man City 2 United’s treble hopes were dashed as Manchester City deservedly reached the Manchester Senior Cup final at the Reds’ expense. In the sides’ final group game, in which the winners were assured of a berth in the final against Bolton Wanderers, late goals from Robert Mak and Andrew Tutte ended United’s hopes of retaining the trophy for a third season in a row. The Reds rarely showed the verve and composure that has characterised this season’s league championship win, and only a string of saves from Ben Foster kept City at bay until the final few minutes. Alex Nimely’s powerful 25-yard shot was beaten away by Foster after nine minutes, although the England goalkeeper was fortunate to see his shanked clearance scuffed wide by the City striker shortly afterwards. David Ball forced another smart stop from Foster with a 20-yard effort, before Abdisalam Ibrahim headed wastefully against the top of the United crossbar amid a goalmouth melee. United’s play was unusually off-key in places, although Kiko Macheda’s superb through-ball almost released Joe Dudgeon, and a City clearance ricocheted off Febian Brandy and straight into the arms of relieved goalkeeper Lorius Karius. Brandy was then denied a strong shout for a penalty when he tumbled under the sustained attentions of Reece Warbara, before Dedryck Boyata and Ritchie De Laet both passed up presentable headed chances to score in first half injury time. The second half was an altogether more even affair with far fewer chances, although City should have moved in front on 52 minutes. Instead, Boyata could only smash over the bar amid another penalty box scramble. De Laet then fired into the side netting when Oliver Norwood’s free kick arrived at his feet, while Foster made another superb save moments later to deny Ball at close quarters. In the ensuing play, Nimely was incandescent at not receiving a penalty for a Norwood challenge. With 13 minutes remaining, the striker’s superb through-ball gave Mack the chance to outpace Gill, round Foster and slot coolly home, and just over two minutes later Tutte hammered home a 20-yard effort to make the game safe for City. Although the Reds pressed for a route back into the game, the visitors held firm to reach next month's final. For United, there is the not inconsiderable consolation of being league champions, and a national playoff with Aston Villa looming. United: Foster; Wootton, De Laet, Gill, Dudgeon; Stewart (Pogba 76), C Evans, Possebon, Norwood; Macheda (W Keane 58), Brandy (R Brown 81). Subs not used: Devlin, Hussain. Code:
