Default Re: [FA Cup] Manchester United vs West Ham United, 3rd round replay

14/01/2013 13:03 - ManUtd.com, Ben Hibbs
Preview: West Ham

Form guide: United are unbeaten in eight games stretching back to December’s 3-2 league win over Manchester City, although a testing finish to Sunday’s 2-1 win over Liverpool and Sunday’s looming visit to White Hart Lane to take on Tottenham will come into Sir Alex’s thinking on selection. West Ham, meanwhile, have won just once in seven games and have registered a solitary victory on the road since October. Most alarmingly for Sam Allardyce in the context of Wednesday’s tie is that the Hammers have hit just five goals away from Upton Park this term.

Ins and outs: Ashley Young and Nemanja Vidic both picked up knee injuries against Liverpool, while Jonny Evans missed the match with a hamstring strain. Sir Alex will use the full reach of his squad whilst handing game time to those most in need of it, namely the returning Wayne Rooney, Nani and Anderson. The Hammers have a lengthy injury list: James Collins (hamstring), Mark Noble (calf), George McCartney (knee), Joey O’Brien (hamstring), Andy Carroll (knee) and Mohamed Diame (hamstring) have all been on the treatment table of late.

Last meeting: That’s why we’re here, of course, after the third round tie at Upton Park ended in a 2-2 draw. United started impressively with quick, passing football in the first half, and Tom Cleverley gave the Reds a rightful lead. But the Hammers matched United’s erudition with eagerness - and plenty of power too. Either side of half time, James Collins’ identical headed goals from Joe Cole crosses looked to have given them victory, but that man Robin van Persie came to the rescue.

Did you know? West Ham boast a superior record in FA Cup competition against United. In nine meetings, the Hammers have won four to the Reds’ three victories, while the stalemate ten days ago is one of two draws – the subsequent replay in 1985/86’s fifth round tie ended in a 2-0 victory for West Ham as holders United crashed out.

Opposition boss: Sam Allardyce has an unenviable record against United. In 18 games against the Reds, with Bolton, Blackburn and West Ham (he didn’t face Sir Alex at Newcastle), he has won two, drawn four and lost 12. But it’s his team’s current form that will worry him more. Allardyce said after the weekend’s 3-0 defeat to Sunderland: "They opened us up far too easily. The difference in performance between this game and last week against United is staggering. We’ve got to defend better away from home.”

Star man: Despite looking, pretty much from the off against United, like he had just completed a marathon, Joe Cole still managed (or was given the time) to conjure two assists. As his sharpness improves, Big Sam says “he’s going to be a major asset. Hopefully he gets stronger and better the more games he plays.”

Sub-plots: The returning Rooney, Nani and Anderson will want to play their way into contention for some crucial forthcoming matches. This will be a good run-out for them, but equally they will want to deliver. United haven’t won the FA Cup since 2004 and there is an appetite in the stands and the dressing room to end that run.

Whistle-blower: Phil Dowd last refereed a Reds game in United’s damaging 1-0 defeat to Wigan Athletic in March 2012. He has officiated in 21 games this season, handing out 74 yellow cards and three reds.

Rivals watch: Chelsea take on Southampton in the Barclays Premier League, (KO 19:45 GMT) while Arsenal face Swansea in their FA Cup third round replay.

Moga RvP cadangan aja. Buat jaga stamina mbalas Spurs. Duo mbah mungkin bakal jadi starter. Moga faktor OT bisa jadi suntikan tenaga coz kemungkinan besar bakal dirotasi.

Boss: Positive injury update

Sir Alex Ferguson has delivered a positive medical bulletin on Ashley Young and Nemanja Vidic after the duo were replaced during the win against Liverpool.

Young was withdrawn at the interval*on Sunday*following a heavy collision with Daniel Agger while Vidic suffered a blow on the head during an aerial challenge inside the*Merseysiders' box.

Meanwhile, Sir Alex also informed*MUTV that both Wayne Rooney and Nani*will feature in*the FA Cup replay with West Ham on Wednesday although Jonny Evans is unlikely to be risked with the trip to Tottenham on the horizon.

Despite reports that Young left Old Trafford on crutches and skipper Vidic had a knee problem, Sir Alex is not overly concerned with*their fitness - even if the winger looks set to miss the midweek*tie*and Sunday's clash at White Hart Lane.

"Actually, Vida's knee is okay," declared the boss in an exclusive interview with MUTV. "It was concussion.

"He had a little bit of concussion but he's okay and fine. He trained yesterday and was good.

"There are no other serious knocks really. I think they're all pretty good. Obviously, Young has got a dull knock, a little bit of a strain on the knee, but it's nothing serious.

"I think he'll be back next week. Maybe not for Tottenham but, the week after, he should be okay."*

Hammers are special for Rio

Rio Ferdinand admits playing against West Ham is always a special occasion for him ahead of Wednesday's FA Cup replay at Old Trafford.

The cultured defender was in good form against Liverpool at the weekend and will hope to feature against his former club after sitting on the bench for the 2-2 draw at Upton Park.

With doubts over Nemanja Vidic and Jonny Evans' involvement, and the possibility that Rafael might be rested with the likely assignment of marking danger-man Gareth Bale against Tottenham this Sunday in mind, the 34-year-old may play at the heart of the back-four.

"West Ham is special for me,"*said the centre-back.*"I look at West Ham as being a similar club to Manchester United in terms of their history and the way they keep all their people for so many years. Here, you see Cath on reception who has been here 30-odd years. It is similar at West Ham with Jimmy Frith and people like that. It is a club that is close to my heart because I came through the ranks there. I look out for their results, after Manchester United's results. I am sure it will always be that way."

Ferdinand is one of a number of players to learn their trade with the East Londoners and is pleased to see Joe Cole return to his old stamping ground, even if he hopes he does not impress in the replay.

"That will be part of West Ham's history forever now, the era we had there, with so many players who went on to play for England and win league titles with other clubs," stated Ferdinand.*"It is unfortunate for West Ham that those players did not stay there and get built upon. That is all history now. Joe Cole has gone there to rewrite a bit of his own history in the coming months. It would be good to see him do something good, but not on Wednesday. We want to get through this round."

When asked if there would be a hole in his medal cabinet if he fails to win the FA Cup, he replied: "I don't know. I will only be able to tell you when I retire. It is something I would love to rectify and change. What will be will be. Fingers crossed, we will win it this year."

Rooney and Nani looking sharp

Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that Wayne Rooney and Nani are both impressing in training ahead of their return to action against West Ham on Wednesday night.

The attacking duo will play in the FA Cup third-round replay and increase the options open to the boss at a busy time for the club.

Rooney has been out since the draw at Swansea before Christmas while Nani's last appearance was 15 games ago in Braga. Sir Alex also hinted that Javier Hernandez and Antonio Valencia appear primed to complete the front-four positions.

"Both [Rooney and Nani] will play," confirmed the boss to MUTV. "Both are fit.

"[There's] Chicha and Antonio, we've got a strong squad, you know. There won't be many changes really.*Wayne coming back is good news. He's been training for a week and looking good. As for Nani, he came back from his spell abroad [having a break in Dubai] and is really looking very good. So I'm fine and will play a strong team."

The manager, whose celebration at Upton Park after Robin van*Persie's last-gasp leveller left no doubts as to his passion for the competition,*feels United are overdue a good*cup run after last lifting the trophy back in 2004.**

"Of course, we've got a big squad but it's also an important tie tomorrow for the club," he asserted. "We want to try and have a go at this FA Cup.

"We haven't had a run for a long time, two or three years, as we had some bad draws of course. We're at home and we have got to take advantage of that. If we get through, we have got another home tie [against Blackpool or Fulham] so there's a big incentive for the club to make sure we get through."

The replay will come too soon for Jonny Evans, who missed the victory*against Liverpool after feeling his hamstring in training over the weekend.

"I could risk Jonny," admitted Sir Alex. "But I'm looking at Sunday's game [at Tottenham] for him."

Default Re: [FA Cup] Manchester United vs West Ham United, 3rd round replay

15/01/2013 19:00 - ManUtd.com, James Tuck
De Gea: Let's halt the Hammers

David De Gea wants Manchester United to deal with the aerial threat that helped West Ham come within a whisker of knocking the Reds out of the FA Cup.

The sides meet in Wednesday's third-round replay at Old Trafford after Robin van Persie rescued a 2-2 draw in the first game with a superb injury-time equaliser.

The Hammers had overturned Tom Cleverley’s first-half opener through two towering James Collins headers, which capped a physical display from the home side.*

De Gea told MUTV: “We conceded two goals from headers in the first game and it’s a type of play that you come across in this league quite a bit.*

“But we have players at the back who are perfectly capable of dealing with the threat of big powerful strikers who like the ball in the air. We have enough nous to cope with that.

“It’s something we work on and try to come up with solutions in training."

The Spaniard acknowledged the challenge provided by*Hammers skipper Kevin Nolan inside his penalty area during the first match. "It’s made even more difficult when you have a tall player like Nolan as well.*

“But if there’s a big man next to you it almost gives you more encouragement to come out with more force and strength to take everything and come away with the ball.”

De Gea insists people should make no mistake about the importance of the cup to United.

“Whatever game you’re playing in, it gains importance when you play for this club,” he added. “This is a trophy we enter into seriously and want to win.”
