Winning ways may have deserted Paul McGuinness' team for the time being, but at least United's Under-18s remain unbeaten after five league fixtures.

The 1-1 draw at Sheffield United follows the same result at home to Middlesbrough last weekend. Previously the Reds had won the opening three games.

Larnell Cole put the Reds in front at Sheffield with a stunning free-kick, fired into the top right-hand corner just after the break, but Joe Ironside swiftly levelled matters for the hosts in the 55th minute, with a low finish after Joseph Coll saved his initial shot. Moments earlier Coll had made a tremendous stop to thwart Ironside, pushing his rising strike over the bar.

The visitors created the two best opportunities in a goalless first period. The in-form John Cofie beat the Blades' keeper only to see his shot come back off the left-hand post, while Ryan Tunnicliffe's surging run into the box forced two blocks - by the keeper and then by a defender on the line when the Reds' number eight tried to turn in the rebound.

The post struck by Cofie in the first half was hit in the second half by Sheffield United's Jordan Slew, who was unfortunate not to toe-poke his side 2-1 up. Later on, Cofie almost maintained his record of scoring in every league game this season when he met Cole's right-wing cross at the far post, only for Long to keep out his header.

United: Coll; Massacci (Fornasier, 63), Fryers, Thorpe, McGinty, Hussain, Cole, Tunnicliffe, Cofie, Lingard (Blackett, 77), Ekangamene (Lawrence, 60). Subs not used: Johnstone, Hendrie.

United's Under-18 side came from behind to take the lead against Manchester City on Saturday, but left Platt Lane with only a point after the home side netted a late equaliser.

The 2-2 draw means Paul McGuinness' side remains unbeaten after six league games this term. The last three, however, have all ended in draws... and all after the Reds have relinquished a lead.

On Saturday against City, United fell behind early to a Harry Bunn strike before Paul Pogba, returning from an injury suffered on international duty back in May, tapped in Michael Keane's cross to level scores.

It remained 1-1 until midway through the second half when man-of-the-moment John Cofie put the Reds ahead with a low strike from the edge of the penalty area. It was Cofie's eighth goal this season at all levels and his fifth in six games for the Academy side.

United continued to press and could have gone further in front had Etzaz Hussain or Ryan Tunnicliffe converted chances. But despite a period of sustained pressure, the Reds couldn't capitalise and, with approximately 10 minutes to play, City's Bunn netted his second of the game to snatch a point.

U18s: United 3 Blackburn 2

A tale of two penalty decisions panned out in United's favour as the Reds returned to winning ways.

Will Keane rolled home the winning goal from the spot, three minutes into injury time, after a visiting defender handled Michele Fornasier's volley from a corner. But the Reds should have been awarded a penalty previously when John Cofie was hacked down in the box in the 89th minute.

At that point, the teams were locked at 2-2 - United having twice come from behind against a bullish Blackburn side. Rovers were ahead after just four minutes in the match, McClaren turning to beat Sam Johnstone from point-blank range after a long throw from the right was flicked on.

Ravel Morrison's excellent equaliser for United, a low long-range strike nicking off a defender on its way in, brought parity for the first period.

The Reds started the second half brightly, dominating possession for the first ten minutes. However, a string of Blackburn corners suddenly put Johnstone's goal under pressure and from the third such setpiece, Rovers edged in front.

Johnstone initially made a smart save to spare the blushes of Tom Thorpe, after the captain's loose touch gifted Blackburn a free crack at goal. But when the resulting right-wing corner came over, the United keeper had no answer to Antony O'Connor's powerful free header.

Paul Pogba made an immediate bid to get United back on level terms but his surging run into the Blackburn box was halted by James Knowles' superb sliding tackle. Keane drove forward in similar fashion shortly afterwards and managed to shoot, only for the Blackburn keeper to make a decent block.

At the other end, Rovers' number seven John Todd spurned a great opportunity to put daylight between the sides when he curled a low shot inches wide of the left-hand post, after receiving a perfect lay-off on the edge of the area.

Todd's woes were compounded when he was withdrawn from the fray with an injury and could only watch as Pogba hit United's second leveller. Rovers gave the ball away clumsily and Larnell Cole capitalised, dribbling in from the corner of the area and presenting his team-mate with the perfect pass. Pogba did the rest, bending a first-time shot into the top right-hand corner.

The Frenchman almost went on to seal victory for the Reds but his direct free-kick, following a foul on Morrison, struck the wall and his second bite on the rebound flew wide. United substitute Jesse Lingard, on for Cole, also threatened Rovers' goal but not as closely as he would have liked after jinking inside to find himself a promising shooting position.

There was still time for further attacks at both ends but a winner for Blackburn would have been grossly unjust after the Reds' cast-iron appeals for a penalty were rejected. Cofie carried the ball into the area and was crudely brought down as his marker made a desperate lunge to deny him - the referee's assistant signalled for a spot-kick but to the striker's obvious chagrin, the man in the middle disagreed.

That decision seemed destined to dominate the post-match talk in the United dressing room, but just when the clouds of frustration were settling into view, the referee was given another chance to award a penalty. This time he blew the whistle and produced the yellow card for the hapless defender handling Fornasier's shot - Keane stepped up and put away the kick to claim all three points for the Reds.

United: Johnstone; Massacci, Blackett, Fornasier, Thorpe; Tunnicliffe, Cole (Lingard, 78), Pogba, Morrison, Cofie, W Keane.

U18s: Stoke 0 United 4

United's U18s enjoyed an emphatic away win on Saturday, racking up four goals without reply at Stoke City's new training ground.

Will Keane carried on from where he left off last weekend, opening the scoring from the penalty spot after he was brought down in the 13th minute. The same player opened up the Stoke defence to create John Cofie's goal after 36 minutes and then notched his tremendous second goal of the game, making space for himself from Ryan Tunnicliffe's long pass forward to fire home just inside the post five minutes before the break.

Jesse Lingard came closest to adding to United's first-half tally with a great effort that flashed just inches wide of a post while at the other end, Stoke's strikers gave the Reds' young Australian goalkeeper Liam Jacob little to do.

After being three-nil up and comfortably in command at half-time, United put the contest to bed with a fourth goal close to the hour mark. Keane and Cofie were involved again, producing some fine link-up play prior to Paul Pogba's dipping shot over the keeper.

Thereafter, scoring chances were scarce as the game lapsed into a midfield war of attrition and United took advantage of the four-goal cushion to send on three subs. The result means Paul McGuinness' side are still unbeaten, with five wins and three draws.

United: Jacob; Keane, Fornasier, Thorpe, Blackett (Giverin, 66); Lingard, Pogba, Tunnicliffe (Hendrie, 66), Ekangemene, Cofie (Lawrence, 61), Keane. Subs not used: Massacci, Coll.

16/10/2010 12:17 - ManUtd.com, Gemma Thompson
U18s: Everton 4 United 3

Paul McGuinness' men suffered their first defeat of the season at Finch Farm as Everton ran out 4-3 winners in an entertaining encounter on Merseyside.

Things has started brightly for the Reds with the in-form Will Keane putting the visitors ahead on six minutes with a composed finish after latching on to a long ball forward.

Everton drew level eight minutes later through Danny Murphy, who looped home a free header after goalkeeper Sam Johnstone had been unable to get near to an inswinging free-kick. Toffees' full-back Luke Garbutt then put the home side ahead from the penalty spot after Femi Orenuga had been tripped by Zeki Fryers in the area.

The Reds came out of the traps quickly after the break with parity being restored just three minutes in. Ryan Tunnicliffe made a driving run forward before backheeling the ball to Keane. The striker cleverly engineered space in the box before seeing his cross handled by Garbutt. Keane made no mistake from the spot as he sent the keeper the wrong way.

Five minutes later Everton retook the lead as Murphy netted his second goal of the game thanks to another free header, this time from a corner. And Conor McAleny made it 4-2 when he headed home Garbutt's left-wing cross.

McGuinness' men were given a lifeline through Michele Fornasier's close-range finish, but the Toffees held out for victory to go above United in the table.

United starting XI: Johnstone; M.Keane, Fornasier, Thorpe, Fryers; Lingard, Pogba, Tunnicliffe, Morrison, Hussain; W.Keane

U18s fall short in Slovak scrimmage
Posted by nickogs20 on October 29, 2010

With a three week gap between Premier Academy League fixtures, United’s U18s ventured abroad in midweek to take on the U19 side of Slovakian top flight club FK Dukla Banská Bystrica in a friendly, unfortunately finishing up on the wrong end of a 5-1 scoreline.

Banská Bystrica, Slovakia’s sixth biggest city, is located in the centre of the country on the Hron River, and in footballing terms is perhaps most notable as the birthplace of Napoli and Slovakia midfield star Marek Hamšík, a regularly-reported transfer target for the Reds. Paul McGuinness took an almost full-strength squad on the trip, with only Ravel Morrison and Paul Pogba absent. Northern Irish defender Luke McCullough, who has missed the start of the season through injury, encouragingly took part in training, while a number of schoolboys also travelled, including James Weir and Josh Harrop.

2,500 fans turned out at FK Dukla’s 10,000 capacity SNP Stadium for the game on Tuesday (October 26th), the venue’s highest attendance of the season. They witnessed the hosts race into an early 2-0 lead inside the first ten minutes with goals from Hučko and Hesek, and just when a strong Reds lineup thought they’d weathered the storm, three quick strikes from Laksík, Uškovič and Rejdovian in the first seven minutes of the second half gave the scoreline a chastening look for McGuinness’ side. Some consolation came as Will Keane found the net with ten minutes left to continue his fine run of form and get United on the scoreboard.

United lineup: Johnstone, M.Keane (Massacci 64), Fryers (McGinty 71), Fornasier, Thorpe, Hussain, Lingard, Tunnicliffe, Cofie (Blackett 48), W.Keane, Lawrence (Ekangamene 64).

An unexpected and disappointing scoreline but still great experience for the young Reds, as McGuinness told FK Dukla’s official website:

"Even though we suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat against a good team, we think it did a lot for our guys because they played against more complex, faster and stronger players than they are normally used to playing. The home team demonstrated a continental style of play that is different from the English way and which our lads don’t encounter so often, and it means our boys get a lot of experience."

Fresh from that experience, the U18s will return to domestic action with a trip to Wolves next Saturday (November 6th).
