FA CUP PREVIEW : MANCHESTER UNITED V DERBY

Setting the scene… The road to Wembley begins for the Reds as we begin our journey in the Emirates FA Cup with a third-round tie against a Derby County side who are vying for promotion in the Championship. For the first time since our opening home league game of 2016/17 against Southampton, it’s Friday night football under the lights at the Theatre of Dreams. After the impressive 2-0 win at Everton on New Year’s Day, the Reds will look to continue our winning start to 2018 by booking a place in the fourth round of the famous cup competition with victory in our first home game of the new year.

What's the team news? The Reds could be without top scorer Romelu Lukaku for a second game after missing the return to his former club Everton with the head injury he sustained against Southampton. Fellow front-man Zlatan Ibrahimovic is also sidelined, along with defender Eric Bailly and club captain Michael Carrick, while Ashley Young will serve the second game of a three-match ban. Chris Smalling was back on the bench against the Toffees after missing two games with a groin problem and could be involved, while there is no word yet on when Antonio Valencia or Marouane Fellaini may return to action but the boss could give a further update on his squad in Thursday's pre-match press conference. Meanwhile, former United youngster Tom Lawrence (hip) and experienced midfielder Joe Ledley (back) are both doubtful for Derby, whose boss Gary Rowett has suggested he will freshen up his team in “one or two areas” after a busy festive period of fixtures.

How have Derby been doing? Well, the Rams have enjoyed a magnificent campaign so far in the Championship in former Birmingham manager Rowett’s first full season in charge. Derby are looking well placed for a return to the Premier League for the first time since their disastrous 2007/08 season under Paul Jewell – when they were relegated with just 11 points. Having been in the play-off picture since the start of the season, the Rams have now propelled themselves into the race for automatic promotion by virtue of a remarkable unbeaten run which currently stands at 17 games – stretching back to a 4-1 defeat at fellow promotion challengers Bristol City in mid-September. Although they drew 1-1 with Sheffield United at home in their last outing and are 12 points adrift of leaders Wolves, Derby sit second in the table and have a two-point cushion over Cardiff City in third.

What’s our record like against them? The Reds have locked horns with the Rams on 104 occasions in all competitions stretching back to 1892 – winning 45 times, drawing 29 and losing 30. The teams have met in four cup encounters since Derby’s relegation to the Championship in 2008. The Reds reached the 2009 League Cup final at the Rams' expense by prevailing 4-3 on aggregate in a two-legged semi-final before a 4-1 away win in the FA Cup fifth round in 2009 and 3-1 success in round four of the competition two years ago - on our way to lifting the trophy - in our last meeting at Pride Park.

One to watch: The United defence will be wary of the threat posed by Czech striker Matej Vydra, who has been in fine form for the Rams this season. The prolific former Reading and Watford hit-man has struck 15 goals and registered three assists so far – including scoring from the penalty spot in their last league outing against Sheffield United. Indeed, the Rams boast a squad packed with Premier League experience, featuring former Hull and Aston Villa defender Curtis Davies, ex-Liverpool keeper Scott Carson and much-travelled striker Darren Bent among others.

Can we win the FA Cup? Of course, why not? After being knocked out of the Carabao Cup last month, the Reds will be desperate to go all the way and win some domestic silverware this season. This time last year, United made a winning start in the FA Cup with victory over a Championship side as Reading, managed by former Reds defender Jaap Stam, were beaten 4-0 at Old Trafford. Mourinho's men were eventually knocked out by his former club Chelsea in the quarter-finals but United would love to lift the trophy at Wembley in May under Mourinho for the first time and move level with Arsenal on 13 triumphs as the joint-most successful team in the competition’s long illustrious history.

Did you know? United will face Football League opponents in the FA Cup third round for the fourth successive year, having won the previous three without conceding a goal. As mentioned, we thumped four past Reading last term, beat then League One side Sheffield United 1-0 at home in 2016 and won 2-0 away at League Two side Yeovil Town in 2015.

Who’s the referee? Kevin Friend will take charge of his first United game of the season on Friday. The Leicestershire official has brandished 40 yellow cards, sent off one player and awarded seven penalties in 17 games in all competitions so far this term. He’ll be assisted by Mick McDonough and Neil Davies, with David Coote on fourth official duties.

TEAM NEWS QUESTIONS BEFORE UNITED V DERBY

Here are five pertinent questions about the Manchester United starting XI ahead of the 2018 Emirates FA Cup campaign kicking off against Derby County at Old Trafford on Friday night…

Will Mourinho rotate the squad?
Probably, but the manager is not expected to make wholesale changes against a side that sits second in the Championship (he named a strong team to face fourth-placed Bristol City in the Carabao Cup last month). Following our absurdly busy schedule, there are bound to be some tired legs among the players and the full strength of the squad may be needed. Jose was optimistic about the team’s freshness after the 2-0 league win at Everton earlier this week. “It didn't look a performance of tired boys or the worst possible calendar that you gave us,” he told reporters. “It looked a fresh performance.”

De Gea or Romero in goal?
Only Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic have made more appearances than David this season, so our much-praised keeper could have a well-earned rest in the FA Cup – just like he did for the League Cup defeat at Ashton Gate Stadium in December, when Sergio made his fifth start of the campaign.

Who will the full-backs be?
Antonio Valencia has been missing since suffering a “December injury” (in the manager's words) in last month’s win at West Bromwich Albion, which led to Ashley Young filling in at right-back before receiving a three-match ban as a result of an off-the-ball incident against Southampton. Victor Lindelof then deputised admirably at Goodison Park and could retain that starting berth against Derby, although young Axel Tuanzebe is another option. He appeared off the bench on Monday and is highly rated by the manager.

Meanwhile, Luke Shaw has started our last three games at left-back and produced a series of encouraging displays, so he is presumably the favourite to begin Friday’s game beneath the lights. The other options include the versatile duo of Matteo Darmian and Daley Blind, who last started on 20 December.

Will it be a midfield three again?
Matic, Ander Herrera and Paul Pogba all started in central midfield together at Everton on New Year’s Day to considerable acclaim, particularly after a dominant second-half performance that yielded two excellent goals. The latter was voted Man of the Match by fans and many suggested the formation inspired his influential performance. Speaking about the display and positioning afterwards, Pogba said: “We played aggressively but in a positive way, creating chances and, defensively, we were very good. It was a very good team performance. I moved a bit more forward in the second half and we did a good job.”

Who’s up front?
After Lukaku picked up a head injury against Southampton, Anthony Martial led the line at Everton and executed a superb finish past Jordan Pickford before Marcus Rashford replaced him on 77 minutes. However, in the pre-match press conference on Thursday, Mourinho confirmed that Romelu is fit for action so it will be fascinating to see which of the trio gets the nod to face Derby.

EARLY TEAM NEWS FROM DERBY

Rams manager Gary Rowett has admitted Wales international Joe Ledley is a doubt due to injury, but he is hopeful that ex-Red Tom Lawrence can overcome a back problem to play.

He has also hinted he will rotate due to the busy fixture list. “I think every team will have a similar approach around the FA Cup. With such a heavily packed schedule around Christmas, it would be silly not to freshen up in one or two areas. But that’s not to say I will make 10 or 11 changes!”

JOSE CONFIRMS LUKAKU IS FIT TO FACE DERBY

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed Romelu Lukaku is fit and available to face Derby County in the Emirates FA Cup third round on Friday night.

The Belgium international and our top scorer for the season received a heavy blow to the head during the Premier League match against Southampton last Saturday. He was taken off in the first half of that game and subsequently missed the impressive victory against former club Everton on New Year's Day.

In an interview with MUTV on Thursday, Mourinho exclusively revealed the big man is ready to return.

"Romelu is back, Romelu is back," Jose told Gemma Thompson. "As I said it was not a concussion, it was a precaution, a protection for him. He wanted to play against Everton, but this time he is back."

Default Re: [FAC] Manchester United 2-0 Derby County

MANCHESTER UNITED 2 DERBY COUNTY 0

Emirates FA Cup third round | Old Trafford | Attendance: 73,899 \ Scorers: Lingard 84, Lukaku 90

Two late strikes from Jesse Lingard and substitute Romelu Lukaku ensured the Reds progressed to the Emirates FA Cup fourth round with a thoroughly deserving 2-0 win over a stubborn Derby County under the bright Friday night lights of Old Trafford.

It had looked as though Jose Mourinho's men were set for a replay after striking the post three times and former Liverpool goalkeeper Scott Carson frustrating the Reds with a number of top class saves, but the man of the moment Lingard finally broke the Rams' resolve six minutes from time with a cracking 20-yard strike, before Lukaku secured the safe passage to round four with a late second goal on the counter attack.

Mourinho received a double Belgian boost as Romelu Lukaku returned to the matchday squad having sat out the win against his former club Everton with a head injury, whilst Marouane Fellaini did likewise after having failed to feature since the win over Brighton here back in November. Both took their places on the Reds' substitutes bench.

For the first time since United's opening home league game of 2016/17 against Southampton, it was Friday night football under the lights at Old Trafford and it was a great spectacle.

The Reds started equally as brightly, with Pogba continuing his impressive form which had previously helped his side defeat Everton on New Year's Day. The Frenchman crossed for another in-form player, Lingard, to fire over, before then shooting inches too high himself after positive build-up play.

Chris Smalling, who returned to United's defence after picking up a knock against Leicester, made some crucial early interceptions as Gary Rowett's Derby looked to play on the counter attack at every opportunity. Reds academy graduate Tom Lawrence often provided the Rams' impetus, looking to impress on his Manchester homecoming.

Marcus Rashford should have put United ahead 18 minutes in after clever footwork took him away from two Derby defenders, but the youngster blasted just over from 15 yards.

Juan Mata had a 20-yard free-kick tipped away by Carson, before Sergio Romero did likewise at the other end as Marcus Olsson's header looked destined to loop in.

If Rashford's earlier attempt was a good goalscoring chance, then his next effort was an even bigger one. A pinpoint Henrikh Mkhitaryan cross was met with a deft header at the back post by United's number 19, but he could only strike the post when he should, in truth, have opened the scoring.

Pogba then replicated what Mata had done moments earlier with what looked like an inch-perfect free-kick, but again Carson was equal to it, diving to his right to acrobatically push the ball over the crossbar and the sides went into the break on level terms at 0-0.

Former Tottenham midfielder Tom Huddlestone had an early second-half effort which deflected off Luke Shaw and flew inches over, before Mata shot straight at Carson and Pogba fired inches wide at the other end. Lawrence tried his luck from 30 yards which Romero saved down low, whilst Pogba again struck an effort at Carson as both sides were being restricted to long-range attempts.

United continued to probe and Pogba again shot inches wide before Carson and then the post denied Rashford for the second time.

Lukaku and Anthony Martial, who had replaced Mkhitaryan and Mata respectively, combined as the latter crossed for the Belgian who headed against the post, but the linesman had his flag raised anyway.

Lingard was the next to be denied by Carson who was fastly becoming the Rams' hero, before Pogba fired the rebound wide. But the young man from Warrington who is in the form of his life was not to be denied this time as substitute Martial fed Lingard who unleashed a fierce effort into the top corner from 25 yards for his 11th strike of the season and his eighth goal in his last 10 appearances.

Lukaku then put the game to bed in the final minute of regular time, as he first brought the ball down on the halfway line, played a one-two with Martial, before slotting through the legs of Carson.

United's road to Wembley will be made clearer when the draw for the fourth round takes place on Monday.

THE LINE-UPS

United: Romero; Lindelof, Smalling, Blind, Shaw; Herrera, Pogba (c), Mata (Martial 67), Lingard, Mkhitaryan (Lukaku 45); Rashford (Fellaini 79).

Subs not used: Pereira, Darmian, Rojo, McTominay.

Derby: Carson, Wisdom, Pearce, Keogh (c), Olsson; Weimann, Thorne, Huddlestone, Russell (Hanson 78), Lawrence, (Bennett 81); Winnall (Vydra 67).

Subs not used: Mitchell, Baird, Martin, Nugent.

WHAT'S NEXT FOR UNITED?

The Reds now have a well-earned break before we are back at Old Trafford to face Stoke City. The game is scheduled for Monday 15 January in the Premier League with kick-off at 20:00 GMT but if Stoke are taken to a replay in the FA Cup by Coventry City, the match will move to Saturday 13 January at 12:30 GMT.

Default Re: [FAC] Manchester United 2-0 Derby County

MOURINHO: VICTORY WAS MUCH DESERVED

Jose Mourinho believes his Manchester United team richly deserved to beat Derby County in Friday night’s Emirates FA Cup third-round tie at Old Trafford.

Late goals from former Derby loanee Jesse Lingard and substitute Romelu Lukaku secured a 2-0 win in the first home game of 2018 as the Reds booked a place in Monday evening's fourth-round draw.

Read what the boss thought of the game as he spoke to MUTV as well as reporters at his post-match press conference…

‘I THINK WE HAD A GOOD GAME’
“I was confident because the team never stopped to play, to try, but at the same time, it happened, for example, recently against Southampton here where we kept playing and the goal never arrived. But I think we played well, I think we had a good game, I think they gave us a difficult game because they defended very, very well. But I think we deserved the victory. To be honest, I don’t think we need a replay. I don’t think a team like them fighting for promotion needs a replay but that’s the rule of the competition and we almost had to go for a second game.”

'MY FEELING WAS GOOD'
"Again my feeling was good, because the players played well, the attitude was good, they created chances, they had shots, continuity in the development of the game, they never lost their brains, they kept playing the style and the way we want to play so I think it is very much deserved. But really the ball did not want to go into the net. Again the opposition goalkeeper was brilliant so it was difficult, but in the end it was a good feeling."

‘CLOWN’ COMMENTS CLARIFIED
“I don’t blame him [Chelsea manager Antonio Conte for his reaction]. I think the press should apologise to me and him because the question that comes to him is completely wrong and because of that he had that out-of-control reaction. I was speaking about myself and then the question to the Chelsea manager was like I said that he behaves like a clown. I don’t blame the Chelsea manager at all and can understand his reaction. I don’t need to behave like a clown to show passion and I can control my emotions in a better way. I don’t need the Chelsea manager to say that I made mistakes in the past and I will make mistakes in the future. I’ve behaved bad a few times and in this moment I control myself much better – it doesn’t mean my passion is not the same. Yes, I made mistakes in the past on the touchline. Yes, I will make less but I hope to make a few [mistakes] in the future."

IMPRESSED WITH LINGARD
“It was an amazing strike. Just recently from our fans [he was] the player of the month. [He scored] an amazing goal at Goodison Park and now he scored an important goal for us, but honestly everybody is happy for him and the team really deserved this. He’s in a clear evolution. I think he’s comfortable in the positions he plays, I think he’s improving with the progressive style of play of the team. He’s playing progressively in a different way which makes him feel even more like a fish in the water and he’s in this moment where things go well for him. He’s the opposite of Marcus [Rashford] because in training, he [Marcus] is scoring unbelievable goals but is coming to matches and missing unbelievable chances, hitting the post and the goalkeeper saves, so clearly the players have these moments. I’m not worried with Marcus because the good moment will arrive and Jesse, if a negative moment arrives, I don’t think he will lose this stability that he’s showing. He’s mature, he understands the game better, so clearly he’s becoming a real player.”

PRAISE FOR THE RETURNING LUKAKU
"He is another example of what a Manchester United player has to be. A great professional, amazing desire to play. We had to stop him playing against Everton, three days later he is here and working the way he is working and showing his desire, his commitment, so I am really happy for him."

APOLOGY TO MKHITARYAN
“[It was] unfair [to take Mkhitaryan off] and I told him that at half-time. I didn’t like what I did. He didn’t deserve it, he was playing well, he wasn’t playing bad. He had a couple of missed passes but he was playing well and giving a good dynamic to the team. My feeling was just that Rashford is not going to score a goal and because of that I’m not going to lose time and I’m going to play Romelu [Lukaku] so then I had to sacrifice a player. Micki was the one that I sacrificed but it’s something that I don’t normally do but I did at half-time and apologised to him in front of other people because he didn’t deserve it.”

HOME AGAIN IN THE NEXT ROUND?
"You always want a home draw because you don't travel if you play at home. Of course lots of fans from the away team are always coming, but it is always better to play at home, but the draw is something we cannot control and, if we have to go away, we go away."

LOOKING FORWARD TO DUBAI
“You want the truth? If we have a replay, we don’t go to Dubai [for warm weather training] and everybody wants to go. Did you see the players celebrating the second goal? Everybody wants to go, everybody wants to have a week of good training, good facilities, but now it still depends on the Stoke result [against Coventry City on Saturday] because if Stoke gets a draw, we don’t go to Dubai! We go on Monday but, if they get a draw, we don’t go.”
