Manchester City might run up a cricket score if Manchester United play as badly as they did against Everton

* If they play this badly Manchester United will be thrashed by Manchester City
* Despite defeat by Everton, now is not the time to blame Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
* Heavy loss at Goodison Park exposed fact United squad needs major surgery

If Manchester United play like this against City, then Pep Guardiola’s side could run up a cricket score.

City thumped their rivals 6-1 at Old Trafford in 2011 and it could be even worse on Wednesday night.

United were comprehensively beaten on Sunday by an Everton team who a week earlier were played off the park by relegated Fulham.

Manchester United could suffer a heavy defeat if they play this badly against Manchester City. Despite the heavy defeat, now is not the time to rush to blame Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

As bad as this was, now is not the time to rush to blame Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. United’s April slump only highlights how much he overachieved after arriving in December.

He restored confidence to a team that had lost all belief under Jose Mourinho. Had the season started when Solskjaer took over, United would be third in the Premier League, only four points worse than Manchester City, and nine points clear in a Champions League place.

The improvement under Solskjaer masked the club’s shambolic recruitment over the last five years. What crushing defeats by Barcelona and now Everton have exposed is that this squad needs major surgery.

As painful as this hammering by Everton must be for the United fans, it could yet prove to be a blessing in disguise.

Police cool over potential player flashpoints in Manchester derby after last year's clash in Old Trafford tunnel

* Manchester Untied and Manchester City players will be trusted to behave
* A tunnel bust-up marred the last clash between the teams at Old Trafford
* However, no police officers will be stationed in the tunnel on Wednesday night
* 6ft fences will be in place outside away turnstiles in attempt to prevent trouble

The Manchester United and City players will be trusted to behave themselves off the field — despite the tunnel bust-up which marred their last clash at Old Trafford.

Following the visitors’ tempestuous 2-1 victory in December 2017, around 20 players and members of staff were involved in an unseemly melee sparked when then United boss Jose Mourinho complained about a lack of respect from City’s celebrating players.

However, Sportsmail understands that no police officers will be stationed in the tunnel area for Wednesday night's game. While officers can move in if needed, United’s stewards will be entrusted to keep the peace.

The Manchester United and Manchester City players will be trusted to behave themselves. With the mild-tempered Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in charge, it is hoped there will be no flashpoints

Trouble flared in 2017 when Mourinho was confronted by City goalkeeper Ederson. The two were involved in a heated exchange which prompted others to join in.

The Portuguese reportedly had water squirted at him, was doused in milk and hit on the head by an empty plastic bottle. After security officers separated the players, police stood outside the dressing rooms.

Now, with a more mild-tempered Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in charge of United, it is hoped there will be no repeat. Much has also been made of a desire among some United fans for a City victory to stop Liverpool from winning the title.

Police have taken that into account but will be taking no chances. For the first time for a derby at Old Trafford, 6ft fences will be in place outside the away turnstiles in an attempt to prevent trouble on the concourse behind the away section, which has often been a flashpoint area.

The fences have been a success for matches against European sides and in other high-profile domestic fixtures.

Chief Superintendent Graeme Openshaw, who will be overseeing Greater Manchester Police’s operation, said: ‘We are looking forward to another huge footballing occasion for Manchester. We’ve been working closely with both clubs to ensure that everyone can enjoy the game in a safe environment.’

Default Re: [EPL] Manchester Derby - Manchester United vs Manchester City

The derby Manchester United fans want to lose... beat Manchester City and it could hand the title to rivals Liverpool or 'that lot down the road' as Sir Alex Ferguson would call them

* Manchester United could effectively hand Liverpool the title with a victory
* United fans could handle another Manchester City title but not Liverpool glory
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants a reaction after his side's 4-0 loss to Everton

When Sir Alex Ferguson said five or six years ago that Manchester United’s real rivals would always be ‘that lot down the road’, he was talking about Liverpool.

He knew what he was doing, too. Ferguson was, in his own unequivocal way, keeping Manchester City firmly in their place.

Ferguson will be at Old Trafford on Wednesday night when his assertion is put to the test. We have seen many things when United and City have met over the last decade but nothing like this: a derby that United’s supporters are not sure they really want to win.

On the face of it, United are in a horrible mess and need a victory to wash the acrid smell of Sunday’s 4-0 beating at Everton from their nostrils. But such a victory would hand Liverpool the initiative in their Premier League title battle with City.

United could handle another City title, their sixth. But Liverpool? That would be something else altogether. Should Jurgen Klopp’s team win this championship, it would require a recalibration of football’s compass.

Without a league title since 1990, Liverpool’s return to eminence would be confirmed. Their total would be 19, one behind United, and in a season when they could also win a sixth European Cup.

So if United’s sense of self-worth is not already being squeezed by bad football and bad results, it now faces a fresh assault from an enemy that has been kept at arm’s length for the entire Premier League era.

Manchester United fans will not be happy if their side hand the title to Liverpool. United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is eager for his side to bounce back quickly

Things like this matter in football. It is partly what sustains it beneath the commercial gloss.

This will be a bad summer for United, whoever wins the title. But it will be worse if it’s Liverpool.

‘There’s loads of things that motivate players,’ said United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer when asked about his team’s predicament.

‘The motivation is towards winning something yourself. It’s not about taking something away from others. We have to want to overtake them both [City and Liverpool]. We want to be the best.

‘We have been the best before and it’s not nice seeing those two at the top. I am sure we will get a response after Sunday. There is always a crisis at Man United when you lose a game or two.’

Solskjaer, who described Wednesday night's game as the perfect fixture to follow the Goodison debacle, knows this better than most. In United’s treble season of 1998-99, Ferguson’s team did not win for almost a month at the start of winter and yet we know how that campaign turned out.

This particular revival, if there is one, will be harder-earned. United are a rabble right now and when Solskjaer said on Tuesday that he does not expect to challenge for the title next season, it was not a particularly shocking pronouncement.

United will play to win on Wednesday night, of course, and don’t expect silence if they surprise us all and score a goal.

Nevertheless, that United find themselves as an unwitting third wheel to this year’s title battle only reminds them once again how diminished they have become since Ferguson stepped aside.

A performance of merit on Wednesday night would be something. A result would be an enormous surprise.

United have only scored five goals in the six games since Solskjaer was appointed permanently and two of those were penalties. They haven’t kept a clean sheet since February 24.

City will be without Kevin de Bruyne, maybe for the season, but it doesn’t seem to matter these days, so deep is the squad available to Pep Guardiola.

The champions have lost just once in the league since Boxing Day and have won their last 10 games in the competition.

‘The players know the importance of this and what we’re looking for,’ said Guardiola. ‘United players lost the last game 4-0 and have been told something about their performance.

‘I know what would be our reaction and that’s what is going to happen from them. We have to accept it but that’s the challenge.’

There was a time when a positive response from United’s players would be a given, but these are not those times.

Anything could happen and, only three-and-a-half months in to his tenure, Solskjaer will know it.

Maybe that is why he sought to inject a little needle with his mention of City’s so-called technical fouls yesterday.

To tweak the blue tiger’s tail seemed brave at best, foolish at worst. It has been noted by Guardiola and if City start fast on Wednesday night, then we will know why.

Default Re: [EPL] Manchester Derby - Manchester United vs Manchester City

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is right, Manchester City do use tactical fouls and Fernandinho is the main culprit

* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is right, Manchester City do use tactical fouls
* City midfielder Fernandinho is particularly guilty of making cynical fouls
* Manchester derbies are easier to referee than Liverpool vs Manchester United

It has not taken long for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to start employing his old manager’s mind games.

Sir Alex Ferguson was the master at using the media to get a message out — be that to the opposition or referees.

I have seen Solskjaer’s comments about City using tactical fouls to disrupt play when they lose possession, and he has a point. They break at such speed and are so expansive that they are left exposed when they lose the ball.

City midfielder Fernandinho, in particular, is guilty of these cynical fouls. But then so are all teams in certain situations. Look at United — Nemanja Matic is similar to Fernandinho in that he breaks up play through whatever means he can, that’s his job.

As a referee you are aware of this but you will ignore the pre-match comments, they have no bearing on how you handle the game.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is correct - Manchester City do use tactical fouls when they lose the ball. City midfielder Fernandinho is often guilty of using cynical fouls to break up play

As for Manchester derbies, I always found them easier to referee than a Liverpool v United fixture, which has a more intense hatred to it.

There was more respect during United v City. The atmosphere at Old Trafford is often a little subdued as well, and I found that helped me to keep control.

Fernandinho ini ibaratnya Keano-nya City. habis Keano, Carrick kayaknya blom ada sosok yg bisa menggantikan peran mereka IMO

Default Re: [EPL] Manchester Derby - Manchester United vs Manchester City

FAN VIEW: Liverpool winning their first Premier League title would be the single worst thing to happen to mankind but wanting Manchester City to beat United would be madness

* Manchester United host Manchester City in the Premier League on Wednesday
* Sixth-placed United need a win to keep alive their hopes of a top-four finish
* However, City need to win to go back on top of the table ahead of Liverpool

Manchester United fans find themselves in tough spot on Wednesday night when they host Manchester City.

Victory for United will see their top-four hopes continue to hang in the balance but will also see bitter rivals Liverpool move two points clear of City with three games to go in the title race.

United fan and Chief Editor of The Peoples Person, Sam Peoples has given his take on the Red Devils' predicament.

Manchester United find themselves in a horrible position on Wednesday night when City come to Old Trafford in that if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side beat the Blues, it could effectively hand Liverpool the title.

As far as bad positions go, Man United won't really find themselves in a worse one than that - win and hand Liverpool the title, lose and give it to City. It's the footballing equivalent of being asked to cut your arm or leg off.

It's led to some questions as to whether United fans would prefer to lose to City in order to stop Liverpool winning the title, but that is madness.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer knows his side need to win if they are to keep alive their top-four hopes. A win over rivals Manchester City and halting their title charge is enough motivation for United. However, if United did beat City then that would see Liverpool in the driving seat for the title

Every United fan should want United to win every single game of football. All I care about is United. Sure, Liverpool winning their first Premier League title would be the single worst thing to happen to mankind but we've got to take blame for that having not beaten them in either game this season. United are struggling right now focusing on our own results and that's where all the focus should be.

The time when United as a football club put the success of others, or stopping it, above our own ambitions is the time we've completely lost our identity as a club.

Thanks to Arsenal and Chelsea dropping points against Crystal Palace and Burnley, United still have a chance of finishing in the top four and securing Champions League football next season. So, our own ambitions for that top-four spot far outweigh the idea of trying to stop Liverpool winning the league somehow. That would be the utter wrong mentality for United to have.

Would I be upset if City beat United and went on to win the title ahead of Liverpool? No. Losing the Premier League title to City on goal difference with the last kick of the season is as painful as it'll ever get, but it doesn't mean I want to see United go out on to the Old Trafford pitch and let City have their wicked way with us.

United really have been the architects of their own position right now and after the 4-0 humiliation against Everton, there is even more onus on Solskjaer's side to show a reaction. In that sense, as Ole alluded to in his pre-match press conference, there's no better team to play than City at Old Trafford. If you're going to get a response, you're going to get it in a derby.

Times have changed since Sir Alex Ferguson retired. Once upon a time, it was United against Liverpool towards the end of the season when they had ambitions to try and stop us winning the title. Now, the shoe is on the other foot and it's painful to see as a fan but going into that City game on Wednesday night, there shouldn't be a single United fan that wants anything but three points, regardless of the circumstances in which we find ourselves.

The Red Devils have to focus on themselves and not the potential downfall of other clubs

mau bikin tritnya sayang mubazir ntar dinihari dah tanding. kalo saya sih sbg fans United mending gak masuk UCL dah tapi Liverpoolnya gak juara PL, tapi harapan masuk UCL sih masih ada walaupun kalah vs City jika melihat performa Chelsea/Arsenal belakangan ini, moga mereka terpeleset disisa pertandingan & United bisa menyapu bersih sisa partai & finish di posisi 4, karena posisi 3 sepertinya akan menjadi milik Spurs yg lebih konsisten walaupun tanpa Kane
