Re: United Reserve Matches
Manchester Senior Cup
Ewen Fields, 8 March 2010 STOCKPORT COUNTY 0 MANCHESTER UNITED 1 Keane 74 Res: Stockport 0 United 1 Will Keane hammered home his first goal for United's Reserves to give the Reds a narrow Manchester Senior Cup victory at Stockport County. The cup holders took three scarcely-deserved group stage points after the substitute striker lashed in a stunning 20-yard finish 16 minutes from time at Ewen Fields. The strike masked a below-par display from United, who lacked the fluid, accurate passing and solid defending which has become a hallmark under the management of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Warren Joyce. Although Nick Ajose flashed an early shot just past the County upright, it was the hosts who made by far the clearer and more numerous chances throughout the first period. Ron-Robert Zieler produced a stunning reaction save to prevent Oliver Gill's errant clearance from giving County the lead, while ex-Red David Poole curled just past the top corner from the edge of the area. Sam Hare was just off-target from distance, but John Disney spurned the clearest opening of the first half in the 44th minute, when Poole's cross evaded three defenders but was skewed wide with the goal gaping. The steely-faced manner with which Solskjaer and Joyce stalked to the dressing room at half-time intimated the off-colour nature of United's display, and it was of no surprise to see far more resolve in the Reds' approach after the break, with far less defensive generosity on show. At the other end, goalkeeper Lloyd Rigby wasn't called into meaningful action until the 69th minute, when he was forced to clutch Scott Moffatt's ambitious drive, but United were galvanised by the introduction of substitute Keane. The youngster, so prolific for Paul McGuinness' under-18s this season, broke the deadlock on 74 minutes when he was found by Oliver Norwood, 30 yards from goal. The 17-year-old striker advanced, shimmied space away from his marker and fired an unstoppable drive past Rigby. Despite bossing possession during the latter stages, United were unable to find a killer second goal. Substitute Magnus Eikrem, back from injury, deftly glanced a Norwood free-kick just past the post in injury time, but his fellow substitute was left to take the plaudits for his stunning maiden strike. United: Zieler; Moffatt (Eikrem 78), Cathcart, Wootton, Gill; Stewart, Possebon, C Evans, Norwood, Ajose (W Keane 60); Brandy (Cole 87). Code:

Re: United Reserve Matches
Barclays Premier Reserve League
11 March 2010, Moss Lane MANCHESTER UNITED 2 R Brown (19), W Keane (27) MANCHESTER CITY 2 Nimely (33), Tutte (pen 90) Res: Utd 2 City 2 United were held to a frustrating draw with Manchester City after surrendering a two-goal lead in a breathless encounter. The Reds went two goals clear inside half an hour through Reece Brown and Will Keane, only to succumb to heavy City pressure as Alex Nimely reduced the arrears before Andrew Tutte converted a 90th-minute penalty. For long periods it had seemed that desperate defending and an inspired performance from United goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler was going to all-but end the Blues' hopes of catching United in the title race. Ultimately, the draw leaves the door ajar for third-placed Liverpool. City started with clear intent, as Nimely twice chanced his arm inside two minutes, but Mame Biram Diouf was within a whisker of breaking the deadlock with a glancing header on 10 minutes as United found a foothold in the game. The visitors' attack carried plenty of menace, however, and it took a stunning double save from Zieler to keep out David Poole's shot and Nimely's follow-up, which seemed a certain goal until the German flung himself to parry it behind. The importance of that save became apparent two minutes later as United took the lead. Oliver Norwood curled a tantalising free-kick into the City area and landed it perfectly on the forehead of the onrushing Brown, who buried his header into the bottom corner. The Reds' lead was doubled in audacious fashion on 27 minutes. Brown's long ball down the right flank caused hesitation in the Blues' defence and allowed Diouf to steal in. The Senegalese striker's pull-back was just behind Keane, but the young striker improvised and spun to backheel a finish into the goal. Having opened his Reserves account with a spectacular winner at Stockport on Monday, the 17-year-old striker is fast showing that he is equipped to cope with a rapid rise through the ranks - this truly was an astoundingly astute finish. City's reaction was positive. Oliver Gill's brave block prevented Nimely from connecting properly with an overhead kick, but the lively striker wasn't to be denied and he halved the arrears shortly afterwards by turning in the rebound after Dedryck Boyata's header had rattled Zieler's crossbar. The see-saw nature of the game continued as Diouf fired over from 20 yards, while Norwood curled just wide from distance and fired a volley straight at David Gonzales Diouf was replaced by Cameron Stewart at half-time, and although the game continued to swing from end to end, it wasn't until the 58th minute that the first shot on target came, when Tutte brought a routine save from Zieler. United introduced Febian Brandy at the expense of Gabriel Obertan, and were forced into another change with 15 minutes remaining. Ritchie De Laet and Kieran Trippier contested a 50-50 challenge from which the City man emerged with the ball. As play continued and Zieler was forced to save from Tutte, De Laet stayed down in obvious pain. The Belgian was replaced by Magnus Eikrem, and Corry Evans dropped back into the centre of defence. United almost snatched a third goal with 10 minutes remaining, but Gonzales managed to claw away Scott Wootton's header. At the other end Zieler was once again equal to Boyata's close-range effort, before City turned the screw. Zieler could only palm out a corner to Nedum Onuoha, whose shot was cleared off the line by Wootton, while Brown performed similar heroics from Ben Mee's follow-up. When the ball was flighted back in, Mee's header was spectacularly turned away by Zieler. Just when it seemed United could hold out, however, Brown was penalised for handball deep inside his own area, giving Tutte the chance to fire home the leveller which City's pressure had threatened for so long. A point apiece was a fair result, and one which leaves this season's title race hanging in the balance. United remain two points clear of City, who have played a game more, but third-placed Liverpool sit seven points off top spot but with four games in hand. United: Zieler; R Brown, Wootton, De Laet (Eikrem, 75), Gill; Norwood, C Evans, Possebon, Obertan (Brandy, 66); Diouf (Stewart, 46), W Keane. Sub not used: Devlin. Code:

Re: United Reserve Matches
Barclays Premier Reserve League
18 March 2010, Moss Lane MANCHESTER UNITED 2 BURNLEY 0 (Brandy 22, C Evans 55) Goals from Febian Brandy and Corry Evans gave United a hard-fought victory over Burnley, and kept the Reds on course for the Barclays Premier Reserve League North title. Owen Hargreaves' 45 minute cameo proved a consuming subplot to the game, but the midfielder's slick outing and a vital victory for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Warren Joyce's side made for a positive evening on all fronts. Almost all pre-match talk centred around the 29-year-old's return after nearly two full seasons on the sidelines, and he seldom squandered possession in a clinical display amid a congested midfield battle which made for a stuttering opening to the game. Little surprise then, that open play yielded few chances in the first half. Indeed, it was through a set-piece that the visitors almost opened the scoring on 15 minutes when Joey Gudjonsson cracked a stunning 20-yard free-kick against the top of Ron-Robert Zieler's crossbar. Burnley's frequent reliance on the offside trap suggested that United would be able to forge chances aplenty, but the visitors' plot was largely well-executed. Only once was it sprung, by Reece Brown, only for Rodrigo Possebon's subsequent shot to be blocked and Oliver Norwood's rebound to hurtle well over. A minute later, however, the Burnley-born midfielder played a huge part in United's opening goal. Norwood again demonstrated his trademark prowess from set pieces with a wicked inswinging free-kick which Brandy glanced beyond Diego Penny in the visitors' goal. Down but not deterred, Burnley roared straight back and Zieler was twice called upon to make solid saves before the interval. Straight from the second-half kick-off, the German was scrambling when Gudjonsson's effort from inside his own half brushed the bar. Substitute Nicky Ajose played a pivotal role in United's killer second goal, on 55 minutes. Having been released but pushed slightly wide by Brandy's pass, the winger worked his way away from goal, turned back and curled in a superb back-post cross which skipper Evans steered high into the roof of Penny's goal. Magnus Eikrem, on for Hargreaves, also had a key role to play in the scoreline, as he proved an unlikely saviour for Zieler five minutes later. The German had missed his punch at a corner, but as the ball ricocheted towards goal, Eikrem hacked it to safety to preserve United's clean sheet. Brandy forced a smart save from Penny and Zieler gratefully clutched another Gudjonsson blockbuster, but the save of the match came on 80 minutes when Penny somehow stretched and arced to reach substitute Scott Moffatt's glorious 25-yard piledriver. Unfazed by his near miss, the defender displayed his customary determination in the final minute to clear Wes Fletcher's shot off the line, following a melee in which Zieler had made a superb close-range save from Christian Kalvenes. That steadfast refusal to concede characterised a United performance of great resolve; one which puts the Reds in a commanding position as the season reaches its nitty-gritty stage. United: Zieler; R Brown, Wootton, Gill, Dudgeon (Moffatt, 66); Stewart, Hargreaves (Eikrem, 46), C Evans, Possebon (Ajose, 46), Norwood; Brandy. Sub not used: Devlin.

Re: United Reserve Matches
Barclays Premier Reserve League
Moss Lane, 8 April 2010 MANCHESTER UNITED 6 Gill (2), Obertan (12), De Laet (24), Evans (63), Brandy (68), Dudgeon (76) HULL CITY 1 Featherstone (57) Reserves: Utd 6 Hull City 1 United's bid for a first Barclays Premier Reserve League North title gathered pace with a comprehensive victory over Hull City at Moss Lane. Just 24 hours after second-placed Liverpool's unlikely defeat at rock-bottom Wigan, the Reds struck six times to move six points clear at the head of the table. Oliver Gill opened the scoring after just over a minute, before Gabriel Obertan - with his first goal at United - and Ritchie De Laet made the game safe. Although Hull pulled a goal back after half-time, fine goals from Corry Evans, Febian Brandy and Joe Dudgeon sealed an impressive win for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side. Ahead of next week's potentially decisive clash with Liverpool at Moss Lane, United made a lightning start in a first competitive outing for three weeks. Little more than a minute had passed when Oliver Norwood's corner was flicked on to Gill, and his header goalwards bounced past goalkeeper Mark Oxley. The visiting goalkeeper's view was heavily obscured by the presence of Febian Brandy, and while the striker wheeled away in delight to claim the goal, replays could not betray any clear touch from him. Just as the senior side had done against Bayern Munich in Wednesday's ill-fated encounter at Old Trafford, the Reserves quickly bagged a second goal. Cameron Stewart had already fired just wide when Rodrigo Possebon led a counter-attack and fed Obertan, who coolly slotted home his maiden goal for the club. Possebon then sidefooted straight at Oxley from close-range, before the visitors served notice of their involvement when top scorer Mark Cullen fired horribly wide when unmarked and well placed inside the six-yard box. That let-off was only a rare scare for the Reds, however, and after Brandy's shot had been well saved, De Laet pounced on Norwood's corner to volley inside the near post and put United well in control. The first half lulled to a close from thereon, although it took another smart save from Oxley to keep out Evans' left-footed effort, and the visitors reduced the arrears when Nicky Featherstone turned in a close-range finish on 57 minutes, pouncing after the luckless Joe Dudgeon had made a superb challenge inside the area. United's response was a positive statement of authority. Six minutes after conceding, skipper Evans pounced on a half-cleared corner to send a delightfully-executed volley spinning into the top corner. Four soon became five when substitute Will Keane snaffled possession and Evans found Brandy, who shimmied away from two challenges before drilling a low shot under Oxley from the edge of the area. Solskjaer introduced young talents Scott Wootton and Paul Pogba for further tasters of second string action, and the chances kept coming. De Laet, shifted to right back after Wootton's introduction, latched onto a superb ball from Evans but was thwarted by Oxley's fine save. There was nothing the beseiged Tigers goalkeeper could do to stop United's sixth goal coming on 76 minutes, however.Keane's blocked shot looped up to the edge of the box, where Dudgeon twisted and unleashed a quite breathtaking volley into the far corner. Hull, to their credit, continued to manfully push for further consolation, and right-back Joe Fox crashed a late shot against the top of Foster's crossbar. The visitors were comprehensively outclassed, however, and the Reds roll into next week's top of the table clash in top form and fresh from their biggest win of the season so far. United: Foster; Moffatt (Wootton 73), De Laet, Gill, Dudgeon; Stewart (W Keane 63), Norwood (Pogba 74), Possebon, C Evans, Obertan; Brandy. Subs not used: Zieler, Cofie.
