Re: [EPL] Sunderland vs Man Utd
Henderson ready for United test
-safc.com- Jordan Henderson looks ahead to Sunday's game against Manchester United on Wearside. Sunday's game against Manchester United is probably Sunderland's biggest home fixture of 2009-10, according to midfielder Jordan Henderson. Wearside's biggest crowd of the season is expected as the Black Cats look to round off their home campaign in style against a United side gunning for the title. "It's probably the biggest game of the season at home," said Henderson, who came on as a substitute during Sunderland's 2-2 draw at Old Trafford earlier in the season. "They will be coming here to win because they need the points at the top of the league, but I'm sure we will give them a tough time at home." Sunderland currently occupy tenth position and are trying to hold off competition from Blackburn, Fulham and Stoke to finish in the top half. United, meanwhile, are a point behind leaders Chelsea, who face Liverpool in Sunday's early kick-off before the Red Devils step out at the Stadium of Light. "We have been playing well recently and we mustn't show Man United too much respect," Henderson added. "We're still definitely looking for that tenth place; all we can do is keep playing well, keep winning and see what happens after the last game of the season. "Finishing tenth in the Premier League would be a big step forward for this football club." |

Re: [EPL] Sunderland vs Man Utd
Campbell relishing Man Utd challenge
-sunderlandecho.com- Fraizer Campbell says he is looking forward to the "game of the season" when former club Manchester United come to the Stadium of Light. The ex-Red Devil has every chance of being in the starting line-up after an excellent run of form in recent weeks. And the 22-year-old – scorer of four goals in the last nine games – says the match has the makings of an absolute cracker. He said "I've played for three other teams in my career – Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Hull City – and it is one of those things that happen in football that Sunderland are playing all three in the space of a month. "But the match I've been looking forward to more than the other two combined, is the match against Manchester United. "For me, it will be the game of the season because I think there will be a fantastic atmosphere, we'll have a chance of getting something from the game and hopefully I can contribute to a good performance." Campbell still has real affection for the current league title holders but knows that anything other than a Manchester United victory is likely to be fatal in the champions' hopes of retaining the title. He said: "I'd like them to win the league – I've still got a lot of friends there – but I am a Sunderland player and I want us to win the game this weekend. "I don't see why we can't do that. Although it will be a massive challenge for us, there are a few things on our side. "We've tended to do well against the top teams this season and we came within seconds of getting a win against United at their place earlier in the season. "Then there is the fact that we are at home and our home form this season has been really good. "And on top of that, we have been in good form recently – over the last few games we are right up there with the best teams in the Premier League. "So we have everything to play for this weekend and it should be a cracking game. "United will come for the win but we are after points too and, if nothing else, it should be a great game for the fans. I expect the match will probably be a sell-out and the atmosphere should be absolutely brilliant." |

Re: [EPL] Sunderland vs Man Utd
Match Pack: Sunderland
-manutd.com- Sunderland v United Barclays Premier League Sun 2 May (16:00 BST) Stadium of Light Live Radio and Text: ManUtd.com Text Alerts: MUmobile.co.uk Whatever the result between Liverpool and Chelsea, United will be fully focused on victory at the Stadium of Light on Sunday... Form guide It's likely that nothing short of three points will do if United are to stay in the hunt for the title, but Sir Alex's men will need to be on guard against an in-form Sunderland side. The Black Cats have won three out of four games in April, including a comfortable 3-1 win over high-flying Tottenham. The Reds will be seeking a better performance in this reverse fixture against the Wearsiders, having escaped defeat at Old Trafford in October courtesy of an Anton Ferdinand injury-time own goal. But the champions' record at the Stadium of Light is strong: five wins and two draws from seven visits. And, after picking up six points against Manchester City and Spurs in the last couple of weeks, United will be in determined mood, especially if leaders Chelsea have dropped points at Anfield earlier in the day. Ins and outs Wayne Rooney is doubtful with a groin strain, so Dimitar Berbatov could lead the line on his own again. Rio Ferdinand is also still struggling with a groin injury and Gary Neville (calf) is touch and go, while Owen Hargreaves will be hoping for another place on the bench. Sunderland will be without Alan Hutton, who is suspended following his sending-off against Hull last week, meaning Phil Bardsley could start against his old club. Midfielder Lee Cattermole and defender George McCartney could also return from injury, but John Mensah (knee) and Andy Reid (hamstring) are out. Star man Darren Bent has bolstered his chances of a place in England's World Cup squad following a free-scoring April. The striker has hit four goals in his last four games to take his tally to 25 for the campaign. The 26-year-old also struck against United at OT earlier this season and will be looking to give Fabio Capello another nudge with a strong performance. Manager Former United captain Steve Bruce has done a sound job since taking the reins at Sunderland last summer, steering the club to a solid mid-table position this term with limited resources. His side are strong at home, where they have only lost two games all season, and Bruce will be keen for that record to continue, despite his former ties to United. Bruce also enjoyed moderate success in his previous posts with Wigan and Birmingham. Referee United will perhaps be happy to have Steve Bennett in the middle, as his last three matches have ended in emphatic victories for the Reds – against Everton (3-0), Wolves (3-0) and Hull (4-0). The Kent official was due to take charge of the Manchester derby, but the volcanic ash cloud left him stranded in Romania following a meeting with FIFA. Rivals watch There are not many occasions when United fans want Liverpool to win, but Sunday’s 1.30pm kick-off against Chelsea will be an exception. Though denying Chelsea three points could potentially help United to surpass their proud record of 18 league titles, Liverpool are desperate for victory as they attempt to hunt down Man City and Spurs for the fourth Champions League place. |

Re: [EPL] Sunderland vs Man Utd
Lorik Cana's warning for Sir Alex Ferguson
-thisislondon.co.uk- Sir Alex Ferguson's men kick-off at the Stadium of Light just after Chelsea's game at Liverpool finishes. United are only one point behind Chelsea in the table and seem to have the easier fixture given that Liverpool still harbour hopes of a Champions League place. But Cana said: “We want to do the job for ourselves and our fans and it would be wrong to think Chelsea are the only team with a difficult game this weekend. Our record at home is fantastic and I see no reason why we can't have a big say in who wins the title. I don't think anyone should be under-estimating what we are capable of. “If Manchester United want to win the league, they are going to have to come and beat us at the Stadium of Light. Of course, they have the players and team to do that — that's completely normal for a team at the top of the league — but I can promise them it will not be easy.” |
