Re: [UCL] Manchester United 0-1 Barcelona
Manchester United 0-1 Barcelona - PLAYER RATINGS: Scott McTominay the star man as Sergio Busquets and Ashley Young have nights to forget
* Manchester United were defeated 1-0 by Barcelona in the Champions League * Luke Shaw's own goal decided the result at Old Trafford on Wednesday night * Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side will have it all to do in the second-leg next week Manchester United will have it all to do in the second-leg of their Champions League quarter-final with Barcelona after losing 1-0 at Old Trafford. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side would have been hoping to get off to a fast start on Wednesday but their plans went out the window after Luke Shaw's own goal from Luis Suarez's header gave Barcelona the lead. The Spanish giants managed to hold onto victory in Manchester, leaving them heavy favourites to progress to the Champions League semi-finals. Here, Sportsmail's CHRIS WHEELER runs the rule over the players at Old Trafford... MAN UTD (3-5-2) DAVID DE GEA 7 – Great reaction save with his left foot to deny Coutinho kept United in the tie. Had no chance with the goal. CHRIS SMALLING 6.5 – Left Messi with a bloody nose with a first-half challenge and Barca danger man wasn’t the same after that. VICTOR LINDELOF 6 – The Swede almost let in Suarez with a poor clearance but did very little else wrong besides. LUKE SHAW 6 – Scored an own-goal and got himself banned for the second leg inside the opening 20 minutes but recovered quite well. ASHLEY YOUNG 5 – Lucky to escape a ban for early foul on Coutinho and was guilty of poor distribution down the United right. Ashley Young had a tough night and escaped a ban after his early foul on Philippe Coutinho SCOTT McTOMINAY 7.5 – Outstanding performance from United’s young midfielder in such esteemed company. FRED 5.5 – Wasted a free kick from a promising position in the first half and struggled to impose himself on the game. PAUL POGBA 6 – Grew into the game after a slow start but this was still short of the world-class display we expect. DIOGO DALOT 7 – Played on the left to counter the threat of Semedo and performed well, but should have done better with free header before half-time. Romelu Lukaku was off the pace and couldn't replicate his heroics like against PSG MARCUS RASHFORD 6.5 – Flashed first-half free kick over but didn’t get the opportunities his energy deserved. ROMELU LUKAKU 6 – The two-goal hero in Paris looked off the pace here and was the first to be replaced by Martial. Subs: Romero, Jones, Mata, Martial (for Lukaku 68, 6), Lingard (for Dalot 74, 6), Pereira (for Rashford 85), Rojo. Booked: Shaw, Lingard, Smalling Manager: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 6.5 – A fourth defeat in five games but he will be pleased United are still in the game after conceding early on. Code:

Re: [UCL] Manchester United 0-1 Barcelona
‘They won’t scare anyone playing like this’: Owen Hargreaves feels Man United should be optimistic for Champions League quarter-final second-leg in Barcelona after Spanish side’s lacklustre display at Old Trafford
* Manchester United were narrowly defeated by Barcelona at Old Trafford * The visitors took an away goal and slender lead courtesy of Luis Suarez * Owen Hargreaves feels his former club should be optimistic travelling to Spain * Henrik Larsson was in agreement that Barca put in a poor performance Manchester United may have been defeated in their quarter-final first-leg clash with Barcelona, but former player Owen Hargreaves believes positives should be taken from the Old Trafford showdown. Barca took a slender 1-0 victory courtesy of former Liverpool man Luis Suarez, though put in a far from convincing performance against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men. United know an early goal at the Nou Camp would immediately bring the tie back dead level, and Hargreaves feels his former club should head to Catalonia with nothing to fear. 'They're really comfortable in La Liga, but they won't scare anyone playing like this. Busquets - we've never seen him give away so many balls in possession,' said Hargreaves during his punditry duties with BT Sport. 'We expected a show it didn't really materialise. We said before the game could United be in it going into the second leg, they are. I think we'll see more fireworks in the second leg.' Swedish legend Henrik Larsson, who played for both United and Barcelona, was in agreement with Hargreaves' assessment. 'I felt they were stressed out when the pass was going and the accuracy wasn't there. Sometimes it's good for a team to rest with the ball and maybe from there create something,' Larsson added. Barcelona left Old Trafford with a 1-0 victory but did not put in the most convincing showing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is faced with turning things around inside the Nou Camp in Catalonia 'It wasn't even close (to their best), I thought they were sloppy again today. 'I got the feeling they were really happy when they scored away from home and then took their foot off the gas a little bit.' Of the English teams remaining in the competition, Liverpool hold a 2-0 lead over Porto ahead of their trip to Portugal while Tottenham are narrowly ahead of Manchester City with a 1-0 scoreline. Re: [UCL] Manchester United 0-1 Barcelona
'It's a tough one, but we've done that before': Ole Gunnar Solskjaer eyes another escape act in Barcelona as he insists Manchester United have ability to score at Nou Camp
* Manchester United were defeated 1-0 by Barcelona in the Champions League * Luke Shaw's early own goal settled the result at Old Trafford on Wednesday * United head to Spain next week needing a heroic display at the Nou Camp Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must produce another famous comeback in the Nou Camp after Manchester United were beaten by Barcelona on Wednesday night. United head to Spain for next week's second leg needing to overturn a 1-0 defeat to rescue their hopes of reaching the Champions League semi-finals. Almost exactly 20 years on from his famous winner in the final against Bayern Munich at the Nou Camp, Solskjaer believes he can pull off another escape act - one that would surpass United's win away to Paris Saint Germain in the last 16. 'It would be a greater achievement because of the history of Barcelona but we can do it – we're still in this tie,' he said. 'We'll go there with work to be done but chances. It's a tough one but we've done that before. We'll go there with the knowledge that we can score.' The only goal of the game came in the 12th minute when Luis Suarez's header from a Lionel Messi cross was turned into his own net by Luke Shaw. A fourth defeat in five games means United will have to confound the odds once again against a Barcelona side who have not lost at home in Europe for six years. Solskjaer will also be concerned that his team failed to muster a single shot on target in the Champions League for the first time since Opta stats began in 2005. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will need a heroic display from his Manchester United squad next week 'That little quality towards the end (was missing),' he added. 'But, you know, when you play against Barcelona you have to play a lot without the ball and you might be a bit tired when you get the chances. 'There were plusses and negatives. We started sloppy and a bit nervous. After their goal we settled a bit. We played well and we had some very good performances from individuals in midfield. 'It was a great goal and great movement from Messi and Suarez. They're a little bit fortunate it comes off Luke and changed direction. 'Messi is a fantastic player. You see the cross for the goal, his awareness and technique. We did as well as we could against him and kept our shape. 'At times it felt like a proper Man United team – the crowd were behind us, we got wide, we got crosses in the box.' Solskjaer again reiterated just how important the display against PSG is for their confidence when they head to Spain. He said: 'To do it would be an even greater achievement than that. 'But the PSG performance gives us the hope and belief that we can do it. 'We are playing against probably the favourites in this tournament and going to the Nou Camp is going to a challenge. 'With the history Barca have, and they are not used to losing at home but we can do it. 'We can carry a goal threat but we have to provide more ammunition and chances.' Scott McTominay was the pick of the United players on a night when Paul Pogba once again missed an opportunity to dominate on the big stage. The young Scotland international insisted the tie isn't over yet, saying: 'We're Manchester United, you can never write us off. They've got top class players but so have we. 'They're a top team and it's not easy to press like mayhem but afterwards we did so, so well and credit to the boys for that.' Apart from his contribution to the goal, United succeeded in keeping Messi relatively quiet and Chris Smalling left the Argentine star with a bloodied nose with a robust challenge in the first half. 'We were right on the front foot,' said Smalling. 'We knew we had to bring that intensity to the game that they're not used to every week. 'The whole team, we nullified them even though they scored. We stuck to our game plan. 'We showed them far too much respect in the first 10-15 minutes but after that we adapted. 'For long spells we pressed them quite high and made it difficult. It's unfortunate we couldn't get that goal because we created chances.' Barca coach Ernesto Valverde warned that United's stunning comeback from a 2-0 first-leg defeat against PSG means the tie is far from over. 'You only need to look how United did in Paris – 1-0 is not going to change anything,' said Valverde. 'The result has yet to be decided. 'But it's a hard place to win. Maybe tomorrow we will realise just how important this has been.' Code:

Re: [UCL] Manchester United 0-1 Barcelona
'We're Manchester United, you can never write us off': Scott McTominay bullish about his side's chances after battling performance against Barcelona at Old Trafford
* Manchester United were beaten 1-0 at Old Trafford by Barcelona on Wednesday * It was advantage Barcelona in the Champions League quarter-final match-up * United midfielder Scott McTominay says it would be wrong to 'write us off' * Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side battled valiantly but still have major work to do Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay feels it would be wrong for people to write them off in the Champions League despite falling 1-0 at home to Barcelona. A first half own goal from Luke Shaw was all that separated the two sides on the night at Old Trafford as Barcelona took control of the quarter-final tie. McTominay started the match and was one of the standout performers for United in what proved to be a fiercely competitive contest, setting up a fascinating second leg at the Nou Camp next week. 'They're a top class team and it's not easy to press like mayhem but afterwards we did so, so well and credit to the boys for that,' the Scotland international told BT Sport. 'We're Manchester United, you can never write us off. They've got top class players but so have we.' United's supporters, players and management do not have to look too far back to a time when they ripped up the script away from home. Scott McTominay (L) feels it would be wrong to write Manchester United off against Barcelona. The United and Scotland midfielder remains upbeat about the chances of knocking Barca out In the last-16 Paris Saint-Germain left Manchester with a 2-0 first leg lead and were overwhelming favourites to progress heading back to the Parc des Princes, only for United to stun their hosts. Two goals from Romelu Lukaku hauled them back into the contest and a stoppage time penalty from Marcus Rashford knocked out PSG and set up this quarter-final meeting with Barcelona. United became the first side in European Cup history to overturn a 2-0 deficit from the first leg and the squad are under no illusions that they need a similar turnaround to eliminate Lionel Messi and Barcelona next Tuesday. 'I thought for large spells we pressed them quite high and made it difficult,' Chris Smalling added. 'It's unfortunate we couldn't get that goal because we created chances. 'I thought we showed them far too much respect in the first 10-15 minutes but after that we adapted. 'Right from half time we really pressed them and caused them so many problems. The whole team, we nullified them even though they scored. As a team we stuck to our game plan. 'We was right on the front foot. We knew we had to bring that intensity to that game that they're not used to every week.' Code:

Re: [UCL] Manchester United 0-1 Barcelona
